IR receiv er The IR r eceiver receives c ommands from the remote control. Speakers The built-in speakers deliver high-quality audio output. A UX IN jack T o use the device solely as speakers, connec t the supplied 3.5mm jack audio cable to this jack from a playback de vice. VIDEO OUT jack T o connect the device to a display , plug a composite cable (yellow) int o this jack. AIR3 11 AIR3 Both the VIDEO OUT and S-VIDEO functions are for the playback of iPod videos or image files only . HEADPHONE jack The st ereo headphone jack ( Φ 3.5mm) is used to connect the device ’ s audio out signal to amplified speakers or headphones. Using this jack automatically disables the built-in speakers. P ower switch The po wer switch allows powering ON and OFF the device . DC 20V power jack The supplied po wer adapter conv er ts AC pow er to DC power for use with this jack. P ower supplied through this jack supplies power to the de vice. T o preven t damage to the device, always use the supplied power adapter . The power adapt er may become warm or hot when in use. Do not cov er the adapter and keep it away from your body . By connecting the device to a display , videos or image files stored in an iP od can be viewed. 1 When the button LEDs are off , pressing any button or the volume knob will turn on the lights, and then all the top panel functions are av ailable.

AIR3 19 AIR3 iP od mode AIR3 is an iP od dock ing station that allows you t o play iPod music and view iP od videos or photos. Playing iP od music 1. Connect your iPod t o AIR3. 2. Press the iP od mode button on the top panel ( ) or on the remote ( ) to switch the device t o this mode. 3. Use the AIR3 remote to contr ol the playback. PREVIOUS PLAY/PAUSE NEXT

Configure iP od video output settings: • Video playback: Go to Videos > Video Settings and toggle T V Out On. • Photo pla yback: G o to Photos > S lideshow Settings and toggle T V Out On. 3. Connect your iPod t o AIR3. 4. Press the iP od mode button on the top panel ( ) or on the remote ( ) to switch the device t o this mode. 5. Use the AIR3 remote to contr ol the playback. Playing iP od videos or photos 1. Connect AIR3 to a display using one of the following methods: • VIDEO OUT : Plug one end of a composite cable (y ellow) into this jack on the rear panel and the other end to the display . • S-VIDEO: Plug one end of the supplied S-Video cable into this jack on the rear panel and the other end to the displa y .
AIR3 21 AIR3 A UX mode Y ou may connect your own playback devic e to AIR3 to use the device as speakers. 1. Connect the supplied 3.5mm jack audio cable to the A UX IN jack on the rear panel from a pla yback device. 2. Press the A UX mode button on the top panel ( ) or on the remote ( ) to swit ch the device to this mode. In A UX mode, the pla yback control buttons ( Play/P ause ; Pre vious track ; Next track) on the AIR3 top panel or the remote control do not work on your pla yback device.

Not every Internet radio station has a corresponding traditional radio station. Some of them broadcast via the Internet only . Y ou can search for a station by global rankings, music genre, or location. Y ou can also go thr ough the stations categorized in alphabetical order . Searching by global r ank ings 1. From the main menu , select Internet Radio > Radio Station/ Music > Global T op 20 , and a list of top 20 radio sta tions worldwide displays . 2. Press the Up/ Down butt on or rotate the volume knob to highlight a station and press OK to c onnec t to the station. *When you highlight a station fr om the list, vertical bars appear at the bottom left corner of the display to indicat e the accessibilit y to the station. Three bars suggest the highest accessibility .

From the main menu , select Internet Radio > Radio Station/Music > Genre , and a list of music genres displays in alphabetical order . 2. Press the Up/ Down butt on to highlight a genre. F or example, if you want t o listen to jazz music: 3. Press the Right button to displa y all the jazz stations available , with the top 10 listed first. Highlight a station and press OK to connect to the station. Searching by c ountr y/location 1. From the main menu , select Internet Radio > Radio Station/ Music >Coun tr y/Location , and a list of geographical regions displays in alphabetical order . 12:00PM Africa Asia Europe << 1/8 >> The list includes: Africa, Asia, Eur ope, Latin America, Middle East, Nor th America, Oceania/Pacific , and Internet Only .
AIR3 24 AIR3 2. Selec t a geographical region and then select a country in the region. A list of stations located in the country displays. 3. Highlight a station and press OK to connect to the station. • For countries that ha ve a huge number of radio stations, the stations are sub-classified by name initial alphabetically . • I f you select a language other than English, you will see the name of the country where that language is spoken in the Radio Station/Music menu. Highlight the country name and press Enter to displa y the stations located in this country . Searching by station name 1. From the main menu , select Internet Radio > Ser vice > Search Radio Station . 2. The stations are divided into 10 categories b y their name initial: 0-9, A-C, D-F , G-I, J-L, M-O , P-R, S-U, V-Z, and Other . S elect a category and a list of stations displays. Station names formed by char ac ters other than Roman alphabet are in the Other group. 3. Selec t any of the stations again to displa y more stations. The stations are listed alphabetically accor ding to the first two letters of their names. 4. Highlight a station and press OK to connect to the station.
AIR3 25 AIR3 Connecting to a station If your AIR3 is successfully connected to a station, the display is as follows: 12:00PM All That Jazz Radio WMA 32 kbps/Jazz Playing… < 1 1/92 Data information Station name Connection status* Network status Buffer length** • *The connection status may change from “Connecting ” to “Buffering ” to “Playing . ” P ress OK to stop playing and go back to the previous menu. If a connection fails, the status sho ws “No URL found .” • **R efer t o page 35 for details about setting the buffer . • I f you shift to the main menu while connecting to a station, a countdown timer will appear a t the bottom right corner of the display . After a lapse of 10 seconds, the system automatically shifts back to the station being played . Adding a station to My F a vorite Y ou can add a currently played radio station or one f ound on the list to My F av orite . Y ou can also manually ent er the address of a station and add it to your fa vorites list. AIR3 has a memor y of 250 stations. Adding a curr ently play ed radio station 1. Press the F a vorite button ( ) on the remote control. 2. The following icons will appear next to the network status ic on to indicate fa vorites status: The station is being added to My F a vorite. The station has already been in My F a vorite. F av orites exceeds the maximum of 250.
AIR3 26 AIR3 Adding a r adio station from the list 1. Search for a station using any of the methods mentioned in the “Searching for a radio sta tion” sec tion. 2. Highlight a station and press the Right button to display the submenu as the following: 3. • A dd to My Fa vorit e: S elect to add the station to your fav or ites list. • Auto Scan (Down)/(U p): S elect to connect to the stations on the list consecutively up/do wn from the highlighted station. Each station will be played f or 30 seconds during which you can add it to My F a vorite by pr essing the F av orite button ( ). • Play: Select to connect to the station. Refer t o the table on page 25 for favorites sta tus. 12:00PM Add to My Favorite Auto Scan (Down) Auto Scan (Up) << 1/4 Adding a manually en tered station 1. From the main menu , select Internet Radio > Ser vice > A dd New Radio Station . 2. Enter the address of a station. Refer to the “T ext entr y ” section on page 18 for details about entering t ex t. 3. When finished, press OK to add it to y our favorites list. Refer to the table on page 25 for fa vorites status.
AIR3 27 AIR3 Managing My Fa v orite AIR3 sav es up to 250 stations to My F av orite so that you can hav e quick access to preset stations . T o manage y our favorites list: 1. Press the F a vorite button ( ) on the remote control (or top panel) or select Internet Radio > My F avor ite from the main menu. A list of preset stations displays . 2. Highlight a station on the list and press the Right button to display the submenu as the f ollowing. Y ou can also connec t to the highlighted station dir ec tly by pressing OK. 3. • Delete: Select to delete the station. • Shift Up/Down: Select to change the order of the preset stations. • Rename: Select to rename the station. AIR3 28 AIR3 UPnP playbac k Universal Plug and Pla y (UPnP) is a network protoc ol that allows devices to connect to a comput er for data sharing within a home network. Through UPnP , AIR3 can pla y music on your PC as long as they are connected to the same network. Y ou ma y use Windo ws® network. Y ou may use Windows® Media Player 11 (or la ter versions) or other UPnP-enabled applications for media sharing . AIR3 is not able to play the videos or image files on y our computer . Both the VIDEO OUT and S-VIDEO functions are for iP od playback only . Conguring UPnP settings on PC The follo wing is an example of configuring media sharing settings in Windows Media Play er 11. 1. Launch the Windo ws Media Player 11 application on your PC. Click the Library tab and click Media Sharing.
AIR3 29 AIR3 2. Click Settings. 3. Click the Allow new devic es and computers automatically check box. 4. After a few minutes, you will see Unknown Devic e (AIR3) appear . Click OK to finish the settings.
AIR3 30 AIR3 Playing PC music on AIR3 After configuring media sharing settings on your comput er , AIR3 is ready to pla y your computer music. 1. From the main menu , select Media Cen ter/UPnP . 2. Y our comput er name is displayed on the screen. Selec t the computer name to displa y music folders. 3. Selec t a music folder or playlist t o begin playback. • For UPnP pla yback, you need to put y our music files into the default Music folder . • We recommend tha t you manage your music folders on PC before the UP nP connection. Limit the number of subdirectories in a director y to six to facilitat e file access on to facilitate file access on AIR3. When br owsing through folders lay er by layer on AIR3, a cross (x) on the bottom right corner of the display suggests that you cannot go an y fur ther . • On AIR3, a maximum of 250 files in a folder will be display ed; therefore , f or example, a c omputer folder containing 1,000 files will be shown as 4 divided folders on AIR3. • AIR3 is not able to play audio files protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM).
AIR3 31 AIR3 W eather f or ecasting AIR3 provides w or ldwide weather f orecasts via the Internet for toda y and the next four days . Y ou can check them out by locations, or set the weather f orecast of a cit y you select to be display ed in Standby mode. Checking out weather f orecasts 1. From the main menu , select Information C enter > W eather . 2. Selec t a continent, country , and then cit y to display the w eather forecast of a location. F or example, the following screen sho ws New Y ork ’ s weather forecast: 12:00PM New Y ork 70˚F 10/08 56-70˚F ˚F << 1/7 >> 3. Press the Up/ Down butt on to see the weather forecasts in fiv e days . 4. T o set the information t o be displayed in Standby mode , highlight the city name and press the Right button. 5. AIR3 32 AIR3 Standby mode displa y The C onfiguration > W eather > Standby displa y > T urn on standby displa y option allows weather for ecasts to be displayed in Standby mode . Y ou can also select the T emper ature unit between Centigrade (˚C) and F ahrenheit (˚F). AIR3 33 AIR3 Congur a tion Selecting Configuration fr om the main menu allows you to configure the AIR3 setups including Netw ork , Clock, Alarm, Language , D immer, Sleep Timer , Buffer , W ea ther , V ersion Upda te , and Reset. Network Refer to the Quick Start Guide for details. Clock The C onfiguration > Clock option allows y ou to set the time/date and a format f or displaying time. The first time you turn on the device and connect it to the network, the display shows Greenwich Mean Time (GMT ). Set the hour according t o your time zone, and through Network Time Pr otocol (NTP), a clock synchroniza tion solution on the Internet, the device will synchronize its clock with accuracy as long as it is connected to the network. • Set Date and Time: Select to set the time and date. Refer to the “ T ex t entry ” section on page 18 for details about entering numbers. • Set Time Forma t: S elect between the 12Hour and 24Hour format. • Y ou can check Greenwich Mean Time (GMT ) under the Information C enter menu. • R eset the hour for the devic e once you are in a different time zone. Alarm This option allows y ou to turn on/off the alarm or program a nap alarm that wakes you up in a fixed period of time . P ressing the Alarm button ( ) on the remote control can activate/deactiva te a programmed alarm or select the alarm settings.
AIR3 34 AIR3 T o pr ogram an alarm: 1. Go to Configura tion > Alarm > T urn On (1)/(2) or XXX Minutes (NAP) . Y ou can program two different alarms or set a nap alarm that will set off after XXX minutes . 2. Selec t Set Alarm Time and enter v alues. Ref er to the “ T ext entry ” section on page 18 for details about entering numbers. 3. Selec t Set Alarm Sound to choose a sound type from Beep, Melody , Radio (the station y ou last listened to), and iP od (the iP od music you last played). 4. The / /XXX ic on will appear at the upper right corner of the display to indicat e that the alarm func tion is activated . Ensure that the device is in S tandby mode at the set time, or the alarm will not set off . When the alarm sets off , press any button to stop it. Language Refer to page 17 f or details about language selec tion. Dimmer The C onfiguration > Dimmer option allows you t o adjust the brightness of the device backlight. Y ou can also shift the backlight mode by pressing the Dimmer button ( ) on the remote control (or top panel). Three modes are av ailable: • T urn Off : Select to turn off the back light. • P ower Saving: Select to turn down the backlight. • T urn On: Select to turn on the back light.
AIR3 35 AIR3 Sleep Timer The C onfiguration > Sleep Timer option allows y ou to selec t a preset amount of time after which the device shuts off . Y ou can also set the sleep timer by pressing the Sleep butt on ( ) on the remote control. When this function is ac tiva ted, the XXX icon will appear at the upper right corner of the display , XX X signifying the minutes left. Six options ar e available: T urn Off , 15 Minutes, 30 Minutes, 60 Minutes , 90 M inutes, and 120 Minutes. Buffer The C onfiguration > Buffer option allows y ou to set the buffer to hold data receiv ed for a cer tain amount of time . Setting a longer buffer makes the data transf er more smoothly but takes you longer to wait. If you are connecting to a station, there will be an icon signifying the buffer length you set: • 2 Seconds: • 4 Seconds: • 8 Seconds: W eather Refer to page 32 f or details. V ersion U p dat e If a new firmware version comes up , you will see this pop-up message. Select V ersion Update ( Y es) to download the latest v ersion. Go to Configura tion > V ersion Update and select the item (a string of numbers) you are allow ed to download. • I f there is no item displa yed, it means your current firmware If there is no item display ed, it means your current firmware version is the latest. • The device will download the latest station list version automatically as long as it is connected to the network. The station list version is signified by the last f our digits of the number string. 2. Selec t Y es . A count down timer displays to count fr om 60 seconds. W ait until the device reboots. 3. Go to Go to Configur ation > V ersion Update to check if the v ersion name is different fr om the previous one. Do not turn off the device while the update is proceeding . Reset The C onfiguration > Reset option allows you t o reset the device to its factor y default settings. Y our favorites lists and network settings will not be erased .

Why is it that I cannot hear anything from the speak ers? • Some stations may not ha ve 24-hour broadcasts. Y ou c annot hear anything If the stations do not send out an y programs. • Either your AIR3 speakers are muted or the v olume is too low . Either your AIR3 speakers are muted or the v olume is too low . T urn up the volume or press the Mute butt on ( ) to cancel the muted mode. I have connected AIR3 to my playback devic e but there is no sound coming out. • Ensure that you ha ve plugged the audio cable to the A UX IN jack on AIR3 and hav e pressed the AUX mode butt on ( / ) to switch the device to tha t mode. • In A UX mode, the playback control buttons ( Pla y/Pause ; Pre vious track ; Ne x t track ) on the AIR3 top panel or the r emote control do not w or k on your pla yback device. Why is it that I cannot activate UP nP? Y ou need to connect both your PC and AIR3 to the same network. What can I do if my AIR3 crashes? Pr ess the power switch on the rear panel to turn off the device , and then switch it on again. I have set the alarm but it did not set off . The alarm will set off only in Standby mode . AIR3 38 AIR3 The wireless connection is not stable. • Establish a wired connection to test if your netw or k is reliable . • If the wired connection is more stable than the wireless one , use the LAN connection instead. Why does the list of online radio stations change? The addresses of the Int er net radio stations ma y var y , so ASUS technicians update them regularly . Y our AIR3 will obtain the latest list automatically as long as it is connected to the network. Y our device functions as usual while the update is proceeding (1–2 minutes). I have had a station in mind but it is not shown on the AIR3 station list. • Go to Home > Internet Radio > Ser vice > A dd New Radio Station to en ter the station address. • Contact us at http://vip .asus.com/eservice/techser v .aspx (recommended). Y our AIR3 radio station list will be updated automatically . I cannot connect to c er tain radio stations. The accessibility to online radio stations v ar y with the network bandwidth in differen t countries. F ailed connec tions may be due t o the following: • The network bandwidth in the country you want to c onnec t to is narrow . We r ecommend an ADSL/Cable Modem bandwidth of at least 1M bps. • Internet congestion. • The radio stations do not pr ovide enough bandwidth. • The radio stations ar e under repair or no longer exist.
