H ow ever , to ensure your saf ety , it is important that you read the follo wing safety instructions. Setting up your syst em • Read and follow all instructions in the documentation bef ore you operate y our system. • Do not use this product near water or a heated source such as a radiator . • Set up the system on a stable sur face with the pro vided stand. Never use the syst em alone without the stand. • Openings on the chassis are for v entilation. Do not block or cov er these openings. Mak e sure you lea ve plenty of space around the system for v entilation. Never inser t objects of any kind into the ventilation openings . • Use this product in environmen ts with ambient temperatures between 0˚C and 35˚C. • If you use an extension cord , make sure that the total ampere rating of the devices plugged int o the extension cord does not exc eed its ampere rating. Care during use • Do not walk on the power cor d or allow anything to rest on it. • Do not spill water or any other liquids on y our system. • When the system is turned off , a small amount of electrical current still flows . P ower switch The power swit ch allows powering ON and OFF the system. Memory card slot The built-in memory card reader reads MMC/SD/SDHC/ MS/MS Pr o cards used in devices like digital cameras, MP3 players , mobile phones, and PDAs. 4 5 6
12 Eee Box PC English USB por t The USB (Universal Serial Bus) port is compatible with USB devices such as keyboards , mouse devices, cameras, and hard disk drives. USB allows many de vices to run simultaneously on a single computer , with some peripheral acting as additional plug-in sites or hubs. Headphone/Audio Out jack The stereo headphone jack (3.5mm) is used t o connect the system ’ s audio out signal to amplified speakers or headphones. Microphone jack The microphone jack is designed to c onnec t the microphone used for video c onferencing , voice narrations , or simple audio recordings . 4 5 6

P ower input (DC 12V ) The supplied power adapt er conv er ts AC pow er to DC power f or use with this jack. P ower supplied through this jack supplies power to the PC. T o prevent damage to the PC, always use the supplied po wer adapter . The power adapt er may become warm to hot when in use. Do not cov er the adapter and keep it away from your body .
14 Eee Box PC English HDMI por t The HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) por t suppor ts a F ull-HD device such as an L CD T V or monitor to allow viewing on a larger external display . USB por t The USB (Universal Serial Bus) port is compatible with USB devices such as keyboards , mouse devices, cameras, and hard disk drives. USB allows many de vices to run simultaneously on a single computer , with some peripheral acting as additional plug-in sites or hubs. LAN por t The eight-pin RJ-45 LAN port suppor ts a standard Ethernet cable for connection to a local network. Audio Out (S/PDIF Out) jack Plug an 3.5mm mini-jack audio cable into this jack f or analog or digital audio transfer . F or S/PDIF Out function, use the supplied mini jack to S/PDIF adapter to connect to y our amplifier . 3 4 5 6

Stop: Press to stop pla ying a media file. Play: Press t o play a media file. F ast-foward : Press to fast-forward a media file. Next track: Press to go to the ne x t track. Information: Press to displa y program information under Eee Cinema or other menu options. OK: P ress to confirm an action. Channel up/down: Press to change T V channels.* Video: P ress to launch the Videos menu in Eee Cinema. Music: Pr ess to launch the Music menu in Eee Cinema. Enter: Press to confirm a selection. Color butt ons : Press t o access menu options in Eee Cinema or in T eletex t mode. ( The button functions may vary with areas.) T eletext on/off : Press to turn on/off T eletext mode. ( This function is available in certain areas only .) Clear: Press to clear input information. Numeric buttons: Press to enter numbers or select a channel.* Eee Cinema: P ress to launch Eee Cinema. Plug the IR receiv er into any of the USB ports on your Eee Box PC. 2. Place the IR rec eiver on a stable sur face. 3. Aim the remote con trol at the receiver when using the r emote.
18 Eee Box PC English P ositioning your Eee Bo x PC Installing the stand Erect your Eee Box PC with the supplied stand . T o do so: 1. Locate the scr ew hole on the bottom of the Eee Box PC. 2. Align the stand screw to the PC screw hole , and then secure the stand to the PC with a coin. Eee Box PC 19 English Installing y our Eee Bo x PC to a monitor Y ou can also install your E ee Box PC to the back of a monitor . T o do so: 1. Secure the VESA mount to your monit or with four screws (HNM/ M4 x 8). T o fasten the VESA mount, your monitor must c omply with VESA75 or VESA100 standard. 2. Place your E ee Box PC on the VESA mount noting the correct alignment, and then secure the PC to the VESA mount with a coin. Eee Box PC bottom vie w
20 Eee Box PC English Setting up y our Eee Bo x PC Y ou need to connect peripherals befor e using your Eee Box PC. Connecting to a display Connect one end of the supplied HDMI/DVI cable to an L CD T V or an L CD monitor ( 1 ) and the other end to the HDMI port on the system rear panel ( 2 ). 1 2 Connecting to USB de vices Connect USB devices like wired/wireless keyboards (v ar ying with areas), mouse devices, and printers to the USB ports on the system rear panel. –or– L CD monitor L CD TV

22 Eee Box PC English T ur ning on the system Connect the supplied AC adapter t o the DC IN jack on the system rear panel, and then press the power switch on the front panel t o turn on the system. 2 4 1 3 • When your Eee Bo x PC is not in use, unplug the power adapt er or switch off the AC outlet t o save on power c onsumption. • Adjust the pow er management settings in the Window® Control P anel. This is to ensure that your Eee Bo x PC is set to a low power c onsumption mode and is fully operational at the same time. T o enter the BIOS setup , press <F2> repeatedly during bootup .
Eee Box PC 23 English Using y our Eee Bo x PC Conguring wireless connection T o connect to a wireless network, follow the instructions below : Connect the supplied wireless antenna to y our Eee Box PC to enhance wireless signal reception. 1. Double-click the crossed wireless network icon on the notification area. 2. Select the wireless network you want t o connect to from the list and click Connect. Enter the network security key if necessary . 3. After connection was established , you will see Connected . F or security concerns, DO NO T connect to an unsecured network. Other wise, the transmitted information without encryption might be visible to others. The screenshots shown in this section are for Windows® XP operating system.

T o establish a wired network, follow the instructions below : Using a sta tic IP 3. Hightlight Internet Protoc ol ( TCP/IP) and click Properties . 2. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties . 1. Right-click the network icon on the notification area and select Open Network Connections .
Eee Box PC 25 English 4. Select Use the following IP address . 5. Enter your IP addr ess , Subnet mask and Default gatew ay . 6. If needed, enter the Pref erred DNS ser v er address. 7. After entering all of the related v alues, click OK to finish the configuration. Using a dynamic IP (PPP oE connec tion) 1. Repeat Step 1–3 in the previous section. 2 Select Obtain an IP address automatically and click OK . 3. Click Creat e a new connection to star t the New Connection Wizard.
26 Eee Box PC English 4. Click Next. 5. Select Connect to the Internet and click Ne x t . 6. Select S et up m y connection manually . 7. Select your connection type and click Next. 8. Enter your ISP Name and click Next. 9. Enter your U ser name and P assword . Click Next.
Eee Box PC 27 English Contact your Internet Service Pro vider (ISP) if you have problems connecting to the network. 10. Click Finish t o finish the configuration. 11. Enter your user name and password . Click C onnect to connect to the Internet.

If you do not see the device you w ant to connect on the Bluetooth device list, click Refresh to search for the Bluetooth devices again. 1. Double-click the Bluetooth icon on the Windows® notification area to start the connection wizard. Bluetooth wireless connection (on selected models) F ollow the instructions below to build Bluetooth wireless connection. The screenshots shown in this section are for Windows® XP operating system.

Click the New C onnection button and follow the previous instructions to add more Bluetooth devices. Y our Eee Box PC can connect multiple devices at a time via Bluetooth. 4. 30 Eee Box PC English Conguring audio output via an HDMI de vice If you use your T V with an HDMI connec tor as an audio output device , connect it to the Home Theater PC and f ollow the steps below to configur e audio settings: 1. Double-click the audio icon on the Windows® notification area. 2. Under the Mixer windo w , select Realtek HDA HDMI Out . 3. Click OK to exit the setup . Eee Box PC 31 English ASUS Easy Update ASUS Easy Update is a software tool that automa tically detects and downloads the latest BIOS, drivers, and applications for your Eee Box PC. 2. Select Schedule to set how often you want to updat e your system. 3. Select Update to activate the update. 1. F rom the Windows® notification area, r ight-click the ASUS Easy Update icon. 4. Click OK to display the it ems you can download . 5. Check the item(s) you w ant to download , and then click OK.
32 Eee Box PC English R eco vering y our system Using the r eco v er y D VD The reco ver y DVD includes an image of the operating syst em installed on your system a t the fac tory . The recov er y DVD provides a comprehensiv e recovery solution that quickly restores your system to its original working state, provided that your har d disk drive is in good working order . Before using the reco very D VD , copy your data files (such as Outlook PST files) to a USB device or to a netw ork drive and make note of any customiz ed configuration settings (such as network settings). Y ou must connect an external USB DVD-ROM to your computer before inserting the recovery DVD . 1. T urn on your computer and press <F8> to en ter the Please select boot device menu. 2. Inser t the reco very D VD into the optical driv e and selec t the optical drive (“DVDROM: XXX”) as the boot devic e. Press <Enter> and then press an y key to continue. 3. The ASUS Reco very DVD window appears . Select where to install a new system (min. 20GB space is required). Options are: Reco ver system t o a par tition This option will rec over only the partition you select from below , allowing you t o keep the other par titions. Select a par tition and click NEXT. Reco ver system t o entire HD This option will delete all partitions from your hard disk drive and restore factory settings. Select and click Y es . 4. F ollow the on-screen instructions to complete the rec overy process. Y ou will lose all your data during the system r ecovery . Make sure that you make a backup of it before r ecovering the system.
Eee Box PC 33 English 5. After the system r ecovery is completed , restart the computer . 6. Set up your language , time zone, keyboard, computer name, and user name to enter the Windows® OS. This reco ver y DVD is for Eee Bo x PC only . DO NO T use it on other computers. V isit the ASUS website www .asus.com for an y updates. Using the hidden par tition The reco ver y partition includes an image of the operating system, drivers, and utilities installed on your system at the factory . T he recov er y partition provides a comprehensive r ecovery solution that quickly restores your system ’ s software to its original working state, provided that y our hard disk drive is in good working order . Before using the recov er y partition, copy your data files (such as Outlook PST files) to a USB device or to a netw ork drive and make note of any customized configur ation settings (such as network settings). DO NO T delete the par tition named “RECOVER Y . ” The recovery partition is created at the factor y and cannot be restored b y the user if deleted . T ak e your syst em to an authorized ASUS ser vice center if y ou have problems with the rec overy process. 1. Pr ess <F9> during bootup (requires a recov er y par tition). 2. The ASUS Reco very Syst em window appears. S elect Recov er system to a partition . 3. Select a par tition with min. 20GB space and click Ne x t . 4. F ollow the on-screen instructions to complete the rec overy process. 5. Restar t the computer after the syst em recovery is completed . 6. Set up your language , time zone, keyboard, computer name, and user name to enter the Windows® OS.
