Chapter 1 System introduction This chapter gives a general description of the desktop PC. The chapter lists the system features including introduction on the front and rear panels. SD MMC CF MD MS SMC
1-2 Chapter 1: System introduction 1.1 Front panel The ASUS BP5265/AS-D596 Desktop PC includes an ASUS motherboard, a power supply unit, a front panel, and a rear panel. All of these components are integrated in a system casing elaborately designed by ASUS. The illustration below shows the front panel and the components on it. 4 x USB 2.0 ports 1 x Headphone port 1 x Microphone port ODD LED 1 x 3.5 inch drive bay* 1 x 5.25 inch optical disk drive bay* Power button / Power LED SD MMC CF MD MS SMC ⢠The storage card reader , optical disk drive, and îoppy disk drive are optional items which are not included in the system package. They are purchased separately . ⢠The 5.25 inch optical disk drive bay is for a 5.25 inch DVD-ROM / CD-RW / DVD-RW device. ⢠The 3.5 inch drive bay is for a 3.5 inch hard disk drive / îoppy disk drive / USB storage card reader . ⢠The storage card reader is for Secure Digital⢠/ MultimediaCard / Memory Stick ® / CompactFlash ® / Microdrive⢠/ SmartMedia ® storage cards.
1-3 ASUS BP5265/AS-D596 1.2 Rear panel The system rear panel includes the power connector and several I/O ports that allow you to conveniently connect devices. 1 x PS/2 Mouse port 1 x PS/2 Keyboard port 1 x VGA port 1 x V oltage selector 1x DVI port 2 x USB 2.0 ports 8-channel audio ports 1 x RJ-45 port V oltage selector The systemâs power supply unit has a 1 15V / 230V voltage selector located below the power connector . Use this switch to select the appropriate system input voltage according to the voltage supply in your area. If the voltage supply in your area is 100-127V , set the switch to 1 15V . If the voltage supply in your area is 200-240V , set the switch to 230V . 1-4 Chapter 1: System introduction 15 1.3 Connecting to the keyboard and the mouse Y our ASUS BP5265/AS-D596 Desktop PC package includes a PS/2 keyboard or a USB keyboard and a USB mouse. Connect the PS/2 keyboard to the PS/2 keyboard port at the rear panel or the USB keyboard to a USB port either at the rear panel or front panel. Connect the USB mouse to a USB port either at the rear panel or front panel. 1.4 Connecting to other peripheral devices The ASUS BP5265/AS-D596 Desktop PC is equipped with a number of ports at the rear and front panels where you can connect peripheral devices to the system. Refer to the illustration below for details. ⢠Due to the chipset limitation, we recommend that you install the graphics card onto PCIEX16_1 slot when using one graphics card. When two graphics cards are installed, the PCIEX16_2 slot runs at the frequency equal to PCI Express x4. ⢠If you need to use dual-display function, contact your retailer for details. Chapter 2 Getting started This chapter helps you to power up the system and install drivers and utilities from the Support DVD. SD MMC CF MD MS SMC
2-2 Chapter 2: Getting started 2.1 Installing an operating system This motherboard supports Windows ® XP / V ista operating systems (OS). Always install the latest OS version and the corresponding updates to maximize the features of your hardware. When you start the system for the îrst time, the system automatically detects the built-in audio and graphics chips and attempts to install the drivers that come with the OS. Select NO when a window appears asking if you want to restart the system. Install drivers according to the instructions in the following sections. ⢠T o ensure that the OS works properly , install the drivers included in the Support DVD. ⢠Motherboard settings and hardware options vary . Use the setup procedures presented in this chapter for reference only . Refer to your OS documentation for detailed information. 2.2 Powering your system Press the Power button to power up the system. SD MMC CF MD MS SMC Press the Power button to turn ON the system

Double-click ASSETUP .EXE to run the DVD. Click an item to install 2.3.1 Running the Support DVD Place the Support DVD into the optical drive. The DVD automatically displays the Drivers menu if Autorun is enabled on your computer . Click an icon to display Support DVD/motherboard information 2.3 Support DVD information The Support DVD that comes with the system package contains the drivers, software applications, and utilities that you can install to get all system features. The contents of the Support DVD are subject to change at any time without notice. Visit the ASUS website at www.asus.com for updates.
2-4 Chapter 2: Getting started 2.3.2 Drivers menu The Drivers menu shows the available device drivers if the system detects installed devices. Install the necessary drivers to activate the devices. ASUS InstAll-Installation Wizard for Anti-Virus and Drivers Utility Installs the ASUS InstAll installation wizard. Intel Chipset Inf Update Program Installs the Intel ® chipset inf update program. Realtek Audio Driver Installs the Realtek Audio driver . Intel Graphics Accelerator Driver Instals the Intel ® Graphics Accelerator Driver . Intel(R) LAN Driver Installs the Intel ® LAN driver . Management Engine Inerface Installs the Management Engine Interface Intel TPM Driver Installs the Intel TPM driver . USB 2.0 Driver Installs the USB 2.0 driver .
ASUS BP5265/AS-D596 2-5 2.3.3 Utilities menu The Utilities menu shows the applications that the system supports. T ap an item from the screen to install. ASUS InstAll - Installation Wizard for Utilities Installs utilities for this desktop PC using the installation wizard. ASUS AI Manager Installs the ASUS AI Manager utility . ASUS Update Allows you to update the motherboard BIOS in a Windows environment. This utility requires an Internet connection either through a network or an Internet Service Provider(ISP). Intel IT Director Intel ® IT Director is a software that monitors security , data protection, and network concerns. It includes a centrally monitored dashboard for overseeing a network of wired or wireless clients within a Local Area Network (LAN). Intel System Defense Utility Intel ® System Defense Utility enables you to remotely control and manage Intel ® Active Management T echnology (Intel ® AMT) processor-based PCs in your corporate network environment. Refer to Intel ® website for the latest update information.
2-6 Chapter 2: Getting started Adobe Reader 8 Installs the Adobe Acrobat Reader that allows you to open, view , and print documents in Portable Document Format (PDF). Microsoft DirectX 9.0c Installs the Microsoft ® DirectX 9.0c driver . The Microsoft ® DirectX 9.0c IS A multimedia technology that enhances computer graphics and sound. DirectX ® improves the multimedia features of your computer so you can enjoy watching TV and movies, capturing videos, or playing games in your computer . Visit the Microsoft website (www .microsoft.com) for updates. ASUS Screen Saver Installs ASUS screen saver . 2.3.4 Make Disk menu The Make Disk menu allows you to make a RAID driver disk. Intel ICH10R 32 bit RAID/AHCI Driver Allows you to create an Intel ICH10R 32 bit RAID/AHCI driver . Intel ICH10R 64 bit RAID/AHCI Driver Allows you to create an Intel ICH10R 64 bit RAID/AHCI driver .
ASUS BP5265/AS-D596 2-7 2.3.6 ASUS contact information Click the Contact tab to display the ASUS contact information. 2.3.5 Manual menu The Manual menu contains a list of supplementary user manuals. Click an item to open the folder of the user manual. Most user manual îles are in Portable Document Format (PDF). Install the Adobe ® Reader from the Utilities menu before opening a user manual île.
2-8 Chapter 2: Getting started 2.3.5 Other information The icons on the top right corner of the screen give additional information on the motherboard and the contents of the Support DVD. Click an icon to display the speciîed information. Motherboard Info Displays the general speciîcations of the motherboard. Browse this DVD Displays the Support DVD contents in graphical format.
ASUS BP5265/AS-D596 2-9 T echnical support Form Displays the ASUS T echnical Support Request Form that you have to îll out when requesting technical support. Filelist Displays the contents of the Support DVD and a brief description of each in text format.
2-10 Chapter 2: Getting started 2.4 ASUS AI Manager ASUS AI Manager allows you to launch AI Disk, AI Security , AI Gear , and AI Probe easily . 2.4.1 Installing AI Manager T o install AI Manager on your computer: 1. Place the Support DVD into the optical drive. The DVD automatically displays the Drivers menu if Autorun is enabled on your computer . If Autorun is NOT enabled on your computer , browse the contents of the Support DVD to locate the île ASSETUP .EXE from the BIN folder . Double-click ASSETUP .EXE to run the DVD. 2. Click the Utilities tab, then click ASUS AI Manager . 3. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation. 2.4.2 Launching AI Manager Y ou can launch AI Manager right after installation or anytime from the Windows ® desktop. T o launch AI Manager from the Windows ® desktop, click Start > All Programs > ASUS > AI Manager > AI Manager v1.xx.xx . The AI Manager Quick Bar appears. After launching the application, the AI Manager icon appears in the Windows ® taskbar . Right-click this icon for more options. 2.4.3 AI Manager Quick Bar Click the Main, My favorites, Support, and Information icon from the Quick Bar to show the corresponding menu. Click to close AI Manager . 2.4.4 Main Launch AI Disk, AI Security , AI Gear , and AI Probe from the Main menu. Click the small triangle to open or close the Main menu. Before using the Recovery DVD, copy your data îles to a USB îash disk or to a network drive and make note of any customized conîguration settings such as network settings. The ASUS PC Recovery DVD is for ASUS Desktop PC only . DO NOT use it on other systems. Visit the ASUS website at www.asus.com for updates. 2.5 Loading the initial OS default settings If you want to load the initial default settings for your system, press <F3> during the Power-On Self-T est (POST). 2.6.1 Recovering a Windows ® XP OS: 1. T urn on your system. Insert the Recovery DVD into the optical disk drive. 2. Restart the system and press <F8> when the ASUS logo appears. Select the optical drive as the boot device. 3. Select where to install a new system. Options are: Recover system to a partition This option deletes only the partition you selected, allows you to keep other partitions, and creates a new system partition as drive âCâ. Recovery system to entire HD This option deletes all partitions from your hard disk and creates a new system partition as drive âCâ. 4. A conîrmation screen pops up. Click Next to conîrm. 5. Check I accept from the succeeding screen and click Next. 6. A list displays the contents you are going to recover . Click Y es to conîrm. The recovery process starts. 7. Insert the Support DVD when prompted, then click OK . The system restarts. 8 . After the system reboots, Windows ® XP begins its system conîgurations. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process, then the system restarts. Adjust the screen to a suitable display resolution.

After the system reboots, an ASUS Preload window appears. Press Next to continue. 4. Select where to install a new system. Recover Windows to entire HD: This option deletes all partitions from your hard disk and creates a new system partition as drive âCâ. The îrst partition takes up 60% of the whole hard disk size and the second partition takes up 40%. The new system is installed in the îrst partition. Y ou can back up your data in the second partition. 5. When a window appears querying Are you sure you want to recover now, click Finish. The process percentage is displayed on the screen. 6. When a Recovery înish message appears, click OK and the system restarts. After it restarts, follow the onscreen instructions to complete the system conîgurations. If you want to recover the system from the hidden partition, press <F9> when the ASUS logo appears. Then follow steps 3-6 below .

3-2 Chapter 3: BIOS setup 3.1 Managing and updating your BIOS The following utilities allow you to manage and update the motherboard Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) setup. 1. ASUS EZ Flash 2 (Updates the BIOS using a îoppy disk or USB îash disk.) 2. ASUS AFUDOS (Updates the BIOS in DOS mode using a bootable îoppy disk.) 3. ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3 (Updates the BIOS using a îoppy , USB Flash disk, or the motherboard support DVD when the BIOS île fails or gets corrupted.) 4. ASUS Update (Updates the BIOS in Windows ® environment.) Refer to the corresponding sections for details on these utilities. 3.1.1 Creating a bootable îoppy disk 1. Do either one of the following to create a bootable îoppy disk. DOS environment a. Insert a 1.44MB îoppy disk into the drive. b. At the DOS prompt, type format A:/S then press <Enter>. Windows ® XP environment a. Insert a 1.44 MB îoppy disk to the îoppy disk drive. b. Click Start from the Windows ® desktop, then select My Computer . c. Select the 3 1/2 Floppy Drive icon. d. This utility also allows you to copy the current BIOS île that you can use as backup when the BIOS fails or gets corrupted during the updating process. Copying the current BIOS T o copy the current BIOS île using the AFUDOS utility: Main îlename Extension name 1. Copy the AFUDOS utility (afudos.exe) from the motherboard support DVD to the bootable îoppy disk you created earlier . 2. Boot the system in DOS mode, then at the prompt type: afudos /o[î¿lename] where the [îlename] is any user-assigned îlename not more than eight alphanumeric characters for the main îlename and three alphanumeric characters for the extension name. A:\>afudos /oOLDBIOS1.rom ⢠Make sure that the îoppy disk is not write-protected and has at least 1024KB free space to save the île. ⢠The succeeding BIOS screens are for reference only . Recovering the BIOS from a îoppy disk T o recover the BIOS from a îoppy disk: 1. T urn on the system. 2. Insert the îoppy disk with the original or updated BIOS île to the îoppy disk drive. 3. The utility displays the following message and automatically checks the îoppy disk for the original or updated BIOS île. Bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS recovery... Checking for îoppy... 4. Restart the system after the utility completes the updating process. Bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS recovery... Checking for îoppy... Floppy found! Reading î¿le âP5QEMDO.ROMâ. Completed. When found, the utility reads the BIOS île and starts îashing the corrupted BIOS île. ⢠Prepare the motherboard support DVD, the USB îash disk, or the îoppy disk containing the updated motherboard BIOS before using this utility . ⢠Make sure that you rename the original or updated BIOS île in the îoppy disk or the USB îash disk to P5 QEMDO.ROM . If your display monitor is connected to the onboard VGA connector , the display monitor will turn-off and the system will beep once while CrashFree BIOS 3 starts updating your system. The system will beep once again while the process is înished, and the display will return after the system restarts.

3-8 Chapter 3: BIOS setup 3.1.5 ASUS Update utility The ASUS Update is a utility that allows you to manage, save, and update the motherboard BIOS in Windows ® environment. The ASUS Update utility allows you to: ⢠Save the current BIOS île ⢠Download the latest BIOS île from the Internet ⢠Update the BIOS from an updated BIOS île ⢠Update the BIOS directly from the Internet, and ⢠View the BIOS version information. This utility is available in the support DVD that comes with the motherboard package. ASUS Update requires an Internet connection either through a network or an Internet Service Provider (ISP). ⢠Only the USB îash disk with F A T 32/16 format and single partition can support ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3. The device size should be smaller than 8GB. ⢠DO NOT shut down or reset the system while updating the BIOS! Doing so can cause system boot failure! Recovering the BIOS from the USB îash disk T o recover the BIOS from the USB îash disk: 1. Insert the USB îash disk that contains BIOS île to the USB port. 2. T urn on the system. 3. The utility will automatically checks the devices for the BIOS île when found, the utility reads the BIOS île and starts îashing the corrupted BIOS île. 4. Restart the system after the utility completes the updating process. The recovered BIOS may not be the latest BIOS version for this motherboard. Quit all Windows ® applications before you update the BIOS using this utility . 3. Select the ASUS FTP site nearest you to avoid network trafîc, or click Auto Select . Click Next . Updating the BIOS through the Internet T o update the BIOS through the Internet: 1. Launch the ASUS Update utility from the Windows ® desktop by clicking Start > Programs > ASUS > ASUSUpdate > ASUSUpdate . The ASUS Update main window appears. 2. Select Update BIOS from the Internet option from the drop-down menu, then click Next.

Even if you are not prompted to use the Setup program, you can change the conîguration of your computer in the future. For example, you can enable the security password feature or change the power management settings. This requires you to reconîgure your system using the BIOS Setup program so that the computer can recognize these changes and record them in the CMOS RAM of the SPI chip. The SPI chip on the motherboard stores the Setup utility . When you start up the computer , the system provides you with the opportunity to run this program. Press <Del> during the Power-On Self-T est (POST) to enter the Setup utility; otherwise, POST continues with its test routines. 3-34 Chapter 3: BIOS setup If you forget your BIOS password, you can clear clear it by erasing the CMOS Real T ime Clock (RTC) RAM. See section â1.9 Jumpersâ for information on how to erase the RTC RAM. 3.6.3 Security The Security menu items allow you to change the system security settings. Select an item then press <Enter> to display the conîguration options. Change Supervisor Password Select this item to set or change the supervisor password. The Supervisor Password item on top of the screen shows the default Not Installed. After you set a password, this item shows Installed. T o set a Supervisor Password: 1. Select the Change Supervisor Password item and press <Enter>. 2. From the password box, type a password composed of at least six letters and/or numbers, then press <Enter>. 3. Conîrm the password when prompted. The message âPassword Installedâ appears after you successfully set your password. T o change the supervisor password, follow the same steps as in setting a user password. T o clear the supervisor password, select the Change Supervisor Password then press <Enter>. The message âPassword Uninstalledâ appears. User Access Level [Full Access] This item allows you to select the access restriction to the Setup items. Limited allows changes only to selected îelds, such as Date and T ime. Full Access allows viewing and changing all the îelds in the Setup utility . Change User Password Select this item to set or change the user password. The User Password item on top of the screen shows the default Not Installed. After you set a password, this item shows Installed. T o set a User Password: 1. Select the Change User Password item and press <Enter>. 2. On the password box that appears, type a password composed of at least six letters and/or numbers, then press <Enter>. 3. Conîrm the password when prompted. 3-38 Chapter 3: BIOS setup Exit & Discard Changes Select this option only if you do not want to save the changes that you made to the Setup program. If you made changes to îelds other than System Date, System T ime, and Password, the BIOS asks for a conîrmation before exiting. Discard Changes This option allows you to discard the selections you made and restore the previously saved values. After selecting this option, a conîrmation appears. Select OK to discard any changes and load the previously saved values. Load Setup Defaults This option allows you to load the default values for each of the parameters on the Setup menus. When you select this option or if you press <F5>, a conîrmation window appears. Select OK to load default values. Select Exit & Save Changes or make other changes before saving the values to the non-volatile RAM. Exit & Save Changes Once you are înished making your selections, choose this option from the Exit menu to ensure the values you selected are saved to the CMOS RAM. An onboard backup battery sustains the CMOS RAM so it stays on even when the PC is turned off. When you select this option, a conîrmation window appears. Select OK to save changes and exit. 3.8 Exit menu Pressing <Esc> does not immediately exit this menu. Select one of the options from this menu or <F10> from the legend bar to exit. The Exit menu items allow you to load the optimal or failsafe default values for the BIOS items, and save or discard your changes to the BIOS items. If you attempt to exit the Setup program without saving your changes, the program prompts you with a message asking if you want to save your changes before exiting. Press <Enter> to save the changes while exiting. 1-2 Chapter 1: System introduction 1.1 Front panel The ASUS BP5265/AS-D596 Desktop PC includes an ASUS motherboard, a power supply unit, a front panel, and a rear panel. All of these components are integrated in a system casing elaborately designed by ASUS. 1-4 Chapter 1: System introduction 15 1.3 Connecting to the keyboard and the mouse Y our ASUS BP5265/AS-D596 Desktop PC package includes a PS/2 keyboard or a USB keyboard and a USB mouse. Connect the PS/2 keyboard to the PS/2 keyboard port at the rear panel or the USB keyboard to a USB port either at the rear panel or front panel. Connect the USB mouse to a USB port either at the rear panel or front panel. 1.4 Connecting to other peripheral devices The ASUS BP5265/AS-D596 Desktop PC is equipped with a number of ports at the rear and front panels where you can connect peripheral devices to the system. Refer to the illustration below for details. ⢠Due to the chipset limitation, we recommend that you install the graphics card onto PCIEX16_1 slot when using one graphics card. When two graphics cards are installed, the PCIEX16_2 slot runs at the frequency equal to PCI Express x4. ⢠If you need to use dual-display function, contact your retailer for details. 2-2 Chapter 2: Getting started 2.1 Installing an operating system This motherboard supports Windows ® XP / V ista operating systems (OS). Always install the latest OS version and the corresponding updates to maximize the features of your hardware. When you start the system for the îrst time, the system automatically detects the built-in audio and graphics chips and attempts to install the drivers that come with the OS. Select NO when a window appears asking if you want to restart the system. Install drivers according to the instructions in the following sections. ⢠T o ensure that the OS works properly , install the drivers included in the Support DVD. ⢠Motherboard settings and hardware options vary . Use the setup procedures presented in this chapter for reference only . The DVD automatically displays the Drivers menu if Autorun is enabled on your computer . Click an icon to display Support DVD/motherboard information 2.3 Support DVD information The Support DVD that comes with the system package contains the drivers, software applications, and utilities that you can install to get all system features. ASUS Update Allows you to update the motherboard BIOS in a Windows environment. This utility requires an Internet connection either through a network or an Internet Service Provider(ISP). Intel IT Director Intel ® IT Director is a software that monitors security , data protection, and network concerns. It includes a centrally monitored dashboard for overseeing a network of wired or wireless clients within a Local Area Network (LAN). Intel System Defense Utility Intel ® System Defense Utility enables you to remotely control and manage Intel ® Active Management T echnology (Intel ® AMT) processor-based PCs in your corporate network environment. 2-10 Chapter 2: Getting started 2.4 ASUS AI Manager ASUS AI Manager allows you to launch AI Disk, AI Security , AI Gear , and AI Probe easily . 2.4.1 Installing AI Manager T o install AI Manager on your computer: 1. Place the Support DVD into the optical drive. The DVD automatically displays the Drivers menu if Autorun is enabled on your computer . If Autorun is NOT enabled on your computer , browse the contents of the Support DVD to locate the île ASSETUP .EXE from the BIN folder . Double-click ASSETUP .EXE to run the DVD. 2. Click the Utilities tab, then click ASUS AI Manager . 3. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation. 2.4.2 Launching AI Manager Y ou can launch AI Manager right after installation or anytime from the Windows ® desktop. T o launch AI Manager from the Windows ® desktop, click Start > All Programs > ASUS > AI Manager > AI Manager v1.xx.xx . The AI Manager Quick Bar appears. After launching the application, the AI Manager icon appears in the Windows ® taskbar . Right-click this icon for more options. 2.4.3 AI Manager Quick Bar Click the Main, My favorites, Support, and Information icon from the Quick Bar to show the corresponding menu. Click to open/close the Main menu AI Disk AI Disk allows you to easily clear the temporary IE îles, IE URLs, IE cookies, IE history list, Recycle Bin, and recently opened îles list. Select the item that you want to clear , then click Apply.

T o lock a device: 1. If you are using AI Security for the îrst time, key in a password consisting of up to 20 alphanumeric characters. 2 Conîrm your password. 3. Key in your password hint (optional). 4. Click OK.

Deselect the device you locked, then click Apply. 2. Key in your password, then click OK . T o change your password, click Change Password and follow the onscreen instructions. 5. 2-14 Chapter 2: Getting started AI Probe AI Probe automatically detects the motherboard and CPU temperatures, CPU fan speed, and CPU voltage. It also allows you to adjust these values manually . AI Gear AI Gear provides three system performance proîles that adjust the processor frequency and vCore voltage to minimize the system noise and power consumption. Select your preferred system performance proîle.

Click Add and then from the succeeding screen select the application you want to add to the My Favorites menu. 2. Click Open . The application you selected is added and its icon appears. Right-click an icon in the My Favorites menu to open, delete, or rename the corresponding application. Double-click an icon to open the corresponding application.
2-16 Chapter 2: Getting started 2.4.6 Support The Support menu displays links to the ASUS international website, online technical support website, online download support website, and contact information website. 2.4.7 Information The Information menu displays the general information of your system, motherboard, CPU, BIOS, memory , and other devices installed.
ASUS BP5265/AS-D596 2-17 2.6 Recovery DVD The ASUS PC Recovery DVD assists you in reinstalling the OS and restoring it to its original working state. Before using the Recovery DVD, copy your data îles to a USB îash disk or to a network drive and make note of any customized conîguration settings such as network settings. The ASUS PC Recovery DVD is for ASUS Desktop PC only . DO NOT use it on other systems. Visit the ASUS website at www.asus.com for updates. 2.5 Loading the initial OS default settings If you want to load the initial default settings for your system, press <F3> during the Power-On Self-T est (POST). 2.6.1 Recovering a Windows ® XP OS: 1. T urn on your system. Insert the Recovery DVD into the optical disk drive. 2. Restart the system and press <F8> when the ASUS logo appears. Select the optical drive as the boot device. 3. Select where to install a new system. Options are: Recover system to a partition This option deletes only the partition you selected, allows you to keep other partitions, and creates a new system partition as drive âCâ. Recovery system to entire HD This option deletes all partitions from your hard disk and creates a new system partition as drive âCâ. 4. A conîrmation screen pops up. Click Next to conîrm. 5. Check I accept from the succeeding screen and click Next. 6. A list displays the contents you are going to recover . Click Y es to conîrm. The recovery process starts. 7. Insert the Support DVD when prompted, then click OK . The system restarts. 8 . After the system reboots, Windows ® XP begins its system conîgurations. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process, then the system restarts. Adjust the screen to a suitable display resolution.

Visit the ASUS website at www.asus.com for updates. 2.6.2 Recovering a Windows ® Vista OS: 1. T urn on your system and press <F8> when the ASUS logo appears. 2. Insert the Recovery DVD into the optical drive when a Please select boot device menu appears. Select the optical drive as the boot device then press Enter . The system restarts. 3. After the system reboots, an ASUS Preload window appears. Press Next to continue. 4. Select where to install a new system. Options are: Recover Windows to îrst partition only: This option deletes only the îrst partition, allows you to keep other partitions, and creates a new system partition as drive âCâ. Recover Windows to entire HD: This option deletes all partitions from your hard disk and creates a new system partition as drive âCâ. Recover Windows to entire HD with 2 partitions: This option deletes all partitions from your hard disk and creates two new system partitions. The îrst partition takes up 60% of the whole hard disk size and the second partition takes up 40%. The new system is installed in the îrst partition. Y ou can back up your data in the second partition. 5. When a window appears querying Are you sure you want to recover now, click Finish. The process percentage is displayed on the screen. 6. When a Recovery înish message appears, click OK and the system restarts. After it restarts, follow the onscreen instructions to complete the system conîgurations. If you want to recover the system from the hidden partition, press <F9> when the ASUS logo appears. Then follow steps 3-6 below .

3-2 Chapter 3: BIOS setup 3.1 Managing and updating your BIOS The following utilities allow you to manage and update the motherboard Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) setup. 1. ASUS EZ Flash 2 (Updates the BIOS using a îoppy disk or USB îash disk.) 2. ASUS AFUDOS (Updates the BIOS in DOS mode using a bootable îoppy disk.) 3. ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3 (Updates the BIOS using a îoppy , USB Flash disk, or the motherboard support DVD when the BIOS île fails or gets corrupted.) 4. ASUS Update (Updates the BIOS in Windows ® environment.) Refer to the corresponding sections for details on these utilities. 3.1.1 Creating a bootable îoppy disk 1. Do either one of the following to create a bootable îoppy disk. DOS environment a. Insert a 1.44MB îoppy disk into the drive. b. At the DOS prompt, type format A:/S then press <Enter>. Windows ® XP environment a. Insert a 1.44 MB îoppy disk to the îoppy disk drive. b. Click Start from the Windows ® desktop, then select My Computer . c. Select the 3 1/2 Floppy Drive icon. d. Click File from the menu, then select Format. A Format 3 1/2 Floppy Disk window appears. e. Select Create an MS-DOS startup disk from the format options îeld, then click Start. 2. Y ou can launch the EZ Flash 2 by two methods. 3.1.2 ASUS EZ Flash 2 utility The ASUS EZ Flash 2 feature allows you to update the BIOS without having to go through the long process of booting from a îoppy disk and using a DOS-based utility . The EZ Flash 2 utility is built-in the BIOS chip so it is accessible by pressing <Alt> <F2> during the Power-On Self-T est (POST). (2) Enter BIOS setup program. Go to the T ools menu to select EZ Flash2 and press <Enter> to enable it. (1) Insert the îoppy disk / USB îash disk that contains the BIOS île to the îoppy disk drive or the USB port. Press <Alt> <F2> during POST to display the following. When the correct BIOS île is found, EZ Flash 2 performs the BIOS update process and automatically reboots the system when done.
3-4 Chapter 3: BIOS setup 3.1.3 AFUDOS utility The AFUDOS utility allows you to update the BIOS île in DOS environment using a bootable îoppy disk with the updated BIOS île. This utility also allows you to copy the current BIOS île that you can use as backup when the BIOS fails or gets corrupted during the updating process. Copying the current BIOS T o copy the current BIOS île using the AFUDOS utility: Main îlename Extension name 1. Copy the AFUDOS utility (afudos.exe) from the motherboard support DVD to the bootable îoppy disk you created earlier . 2. Boot the system in DOS mode, then at the prompt type: afudos /o[î¿lename] where the [îlename] is any user-assigned îlename not more than eight alphanumeric characters for the main îlename and three alphanumeric characters for the extension name. A:\>afudos /oOLDBIOS1.rom ⢠Make sure that the îoppy disk is not write-protected and has at least 1024KB free space to save the île. ⢠The succeeding BIOS screens are for reference only . The actual BIOS screen displays may not be same as shown. The utility returns to the DOS prompt after copying the current BIOS île. 3. Press <Enter>. The utility copies the current BIOS île to the îoppy disk. Y ou can update a corrupted BIOS île using the motherboard support DVD, the USB îash disk, or the îoppy disk that contains the updated BIOS île. Recovering the BIOS from a îoppy disk T o recover the BIOS from a îoppy disk: 1. T urn on the system. 2. Insert the îoppy disk with the original or updated BIOS île to the îoppy disk drive. 3. The utility displays the following message and automatically checks the îoppy disk for the original or updated BIOS île. Bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS recovery... Checking for îoppy... 4. Restart the system after the utility completes the updating process. Bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS recovery... Checking for îoppy... Floppy found! Reading î¿le âP5QEMDO.ROMâ. Completed. Start îashing... When found, the utility reads the BIOS île and starts îashing the corrupted BIOS île. ⢠Prepare the motherboard support DVD, the USB îash disk, or the îoppy disk containing the updated motherboard BIOS before using this utility . ⢠Make sure that you rename the original or updated BIOS île in the îoppy disk or the USB îash disk to P5 QEMDO.ROM . If your display monitor is connected to the onboard VGA connector , the display monitor will turn-off and the system will beep once while CrashFree BIOS 3 starts updating your system. The system will beep once again while the process is înished, and the display will return after the system restarts.

Insert the support DVD to the optical drive. 3. The utility displays the following message and automatically checks the îoppy disk for the original or updated BIOS île. Bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS recovery... Checking for îoppy... Floppy not found! Checking for CD-ROM... CD-ROM found! Reading î¿le âP5QEMDO.ROMâ. Completed. Start îashing... When no îoppy disk is found, the utility automatically checks the optical drive for the original or updated BIOS île. The utility then updates the corrupted BIOS île. Bad BIOS checksum. Starting BIOS recovery... Checking for îoppy... 4. Restart the system after the utility completes the updating process.
3-8 Chapter 3: BIOS setup 3.1.5 ASUS Update utility The ASUS Update is a utility that allows you to manage, save, and update the motherboard BIOS in Windows ® environment. The ASUS Update utility allows you to: ⢠Save the current BIOS île ⢠Download the latest BIOS île from the Internet ⢠Update the BIOS from an updated BIOS île ⢠Update the BIOS directly from the Internet, and ⢠View the BIOS version information. This utility is available in the support DVD that comes with the motherboard package. ASUS Update requires an Internet connection either through a network or an Internet Service Provider (ISP). ⢠Only the USB îash disk with F A T 32/16 format and single partition can support ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3. The device size should be smaller than 8GB. ⢠DO NOT shut down or reset the system while updating the BIOS! Doing so can cause system boot failure! Recovering the BIOS from the USB îash disk T o recover the BIOS from the USB îash disk: 1. Insert the USB îash disk that contains BIOS île to the USB port. 2. T urn on the system. 3. The utility will automatically checks the devices for the BIOS île when found, the utility reads the BIOS île and starts îashing the corrupted BIOS île. 4. Restart the system after the utility completes the updating process. The recovered BIOS may not be the latest BIOS version for this motherboard. Visit the ASUS website (www.asus.com) to download the latest BIOS île.

Quit all Windows ® applications before you update the BIOS using this utility . 3. Select the ASUS FTP site nearest you to avoid network trafîc, or click Auto Select . Click Next . Even if you are not prompted to use the Setup program, you can change the conîguration of your computer in the future. For example, you can enable the security password feature or change the power management settings. This requires you to reconîgure your system using the BIOS Setup program so that the computer can recognize these changes and record them in the CMOS RAM of the SPI chip. The SPI chip on the motherboard stores the Setup utility . When you start up the computer , the system provides you with the opportunity to run this program. Press <Del> during the Power-On Self-T est (POST) to enter the Setup utility; otherwise, POST continues with its test routines. If you wish to enter Setup after POST , reboot the system by doing any of the following procedures: ⢠Restart using the OS standard shut-down procedure. ⢠Press <Ctrl> <Alt> <Del> simultaneously . ⢠Press the reset button on the system chassis. ⢠Press the power button to turn the system off then back on. Using the power button, reset button, or the <Ctrl> <Alt> <Del> keys to force reset from a running operating system can cause damage to your data or system. If you made changes to îelds other than System Date, System T ime, and Password, the BIOS asks for a conîrmation before exiting. Discard Changes This option allows you to discard the selections you made and restore the previously saved values. After selecting this option, a conîrmation appears. Select OK to discard any changes and load the previously saved values. Load Setup Defaults This option allows you to load the default values for each of the parameters on the Setup menus. When you select this option or if you press <F5>, a conîrmation window appears. Select OK to load default values. Select Exit & Save Changes or make other changes before saving the values to the non-volatile RAM. Exit & Save Changes Once you are înished making your selections, choose this option from the Exit menu to ensure the values you selected are saved to the CMOS RAM. An onboard backup battery sustains the CMOS RAM so it stays on even when the PC is turned off. When you select this option, a conîrmation window appears. Select OK to save changes and exit. 3.8 Exit menu Pressing <Esc> does not immediately exit this menu. Select one of the options from this menu or <F10> from the legend bar to exit. The Exit menu items allow you to load the optimal or failsafe default values for the BIOS items, and save or discard your changes to the BIOS items. If you attempt to exit the Setup program without saving your changes, the program prompts you with a message asking if you want to save your changes before exiting.
