Using this jack automatically disables the built-in speakers. 11 micr oSD car d slot : Insert a micr oSD car d into this slot. 12 micr o-USB port : Insert the micr o-USB cable into this port. Charging your device T o charge your device: 1. Connect the USB cable’ s micr o-USB connector to the micr o-USB port of your device. 2. Connect the micr o-USB cable to the USB charger . 3. Connect the USB charger to a power outlet. NOTES: • Y ou may also connect the micro-USB cable to your computer’ s USB port to charge your device. • Use only the USB charger that comes with your device. Using a differ ent USB charger may damage your device. • The bundled USB charger varies with regions. • Y our device has an extended inter nal battery life of up to two weeks on a single charge. • All battery claims depend on several factors such network settings or wireless usage and actual r esults may vary . 2 Getting started 1 2 3
T ur ning your device ON T o turn your device ON: • Long pr ess the Power key for about thr ee seconds. T ur ning your device OFF W aking up your device from Sleep mode NOTE: By default, your device automatically enters the Sleep or Suspend mode when you ar e not operating your device for some time. T o wake up your device fr om Sleep mode: • Short pr ess the Power key to wake up the system. Shutting down your device T o shut down your device, do any of the following: • Fr om the home scr een, tap Setup > Shut Down, then tap Y es on the confirmation message. • Long pr ess the Power key for about thr ee seconds to shut down your device. Har d resetting your device T o har d reset your device: • Simultaneously pr ess the Home, Function, and Power keys.
Installing a micr oSD card into your device Y our device is equipped with a microSD car d slot. A microSD car d provides you with extended memory wher e you can stor e your files and other data. T o insert a micr oSD card: 1. Locate the micr oSD car d slot at the bottom of the device. 2. Insert the micr oSD car d into the car d slot. microSD car d slot Copying files to or fr om your device Y ou can download pdf, ePub, txt, or mp3 files from your computer to your device and vice versa. T o copy files to your device: 1. T ur n on your device. 2. Using the bundled micr o-USB cable, connect your device to your computer’ s USB port. 3. T ap Connect to PC to display the dir ectory on your device. 4. Copy the files to your pr eferr ed destination path. 5. When done, click the Safely r emove har dwar e icon on the taskbar at the bottom right of your computer scr een. IMPOR T ANT ! • For text format files such as ePub, pdf, or txt files: Create a folder named Book and copy the ePub and pdf files into this folder . • For audio format files such as mp3 files: Create a folder named Audio and copy the audio files into this folder .
3 Using your device The Home scr een W ith the tap of your finger on the touch panel, My Reader scr een enables you to quickly access Books, News Reader, Dictionary , Audio Player , Sketch Book , Favorites , W eb Stor e , Bookstor e , W eb Br owser , and Setup . Using the touch gestur es T ouch gestur es ar e movements that you make with your finger to select items or navigate ar ound your digital r eader's touch panel. NOTE: Use light pr essur e when making a touch gestur e. IMPOR T ANT! Do not use any objects in place of your finger to operate the touch panel. Doing so may damage or scratch the touch panel’ s surface. Standar d gestur es Show the function bar When r eading an e-book, move your finger in an upwar d motion on the touch panel.
Hide the function bar When r eading an e-book, move your finger in a downwar d motion on the touch panel. Single tap T ap once to select an item. Next page When r eading an e-book, move your finger fr om right to left on the touch panel. Pr evious page When r eading an e-book, move your finger fr om left to right on the touch panel. Accessing e-books Reading an e-book T o r ead an e-book: 1. Fr om the home scr een, tap Books. 2. Fr om the menu at the bottom of the scr een, tap Title, Author, Added Time, Read Time or T ag to select an e-book under these lists.
3. Do any of the following: • Pr ess the Page up / Page down keys ( / ) to go to the next page or go back to the pr evious page. • T ap Rotate to change the page orientation. • T ap Zoom and select an option from the Zoom menu list. NOTES: • Added Time contains e-books that are sorted based on the time that a certain e-book is copied or downloaded to your device. • Read Time contains e-books that are sorted based on the time that a certain e-book was last r ead on your device. • T ag contains e-books that are sorted based on types or categories. Refer to the next section T agging a book for more details. NOTES: • Y ou may highlight words or lines and write annotations while r eading an e-book. For mor e details, r efer to the next sections. Y ou may use the Go to function to jump or go to a specific page in an open e-book. For mor e details, r efer to the section Using the Go to, Import, and Export functions . Annotating an e-book Y our device allows you to annotate or write notes about certain lines on pages in an e-book. Annotating an e-book T o annotate an e-book: 1. Fr om the open e-book, pr ess the Function key on your device to display the function bar . 2. Fr om the Function bar , tap Annotation. 3. On the e-book, tap the line that you want to annotate. 4. T ap the annotation icon at the left side of the line that you tapped.
Viewing your annotations T o view your list of annotations: 1. Fr om the open e-book, tap the e-book title at the upper left of your touch panel. 2. Fr om the Book Administrator menu, tap Annotations to display your list of annotations. 3. Fr om the list, select the page that you want to view . 5. Use the virtual keyboar d to write notes. 6. When done, tap Save. NOTE: Y ou may import or export annotations, highlights, and bookmarks. For mor e details, r efer to the section Using the Go to, Export, and Import functions .
Highlighting an e-book Y our device allows you to highlight words or lines on pages in an e-book. Highlighting an e-book T o highlight an e-book: 1. Fr om the open e-book, pr ess the Function key on your device to display the function bar . 2. Fr om the Function bar , tap Highlight. 3. T o highlight a wor d or phrase : T ap the wor d or phrase you want to highlight. NOTE: Y ou may import or export annotations, highlights, and bookmarks. For mor e details, r efer to the section Using the Go to, Export, and Import functions . Viewing your highlights T o view your highlights: 1. Fr om the open e-book, tap the e-book title at the upper left of your touch panel. 2. Fr om the Book Administrator menu, tap Highlights to display your list of highlighted wor ds or lines. 3. Fr om the list, tap the page that you want to view . T o highlight lines : Drag your finger fr om the start of the line, then tap your finger at the end of the line to signify the end of the highlight.
Bookmarking an e-book Y ou can add a specific e-book to your Favorites list. T o bookmark an e-book: 1. Fr om the home scr een, tap Books to display your list of e-books. 2. Y ou can bookmark an e-book in any of these two ways: • Bookmarking fr om the e-book list a. Br owse thr ough your e-book list for the e-book that you want to bookmark. b. T ap one to thr ee bookmark icons to denote the e-book’ s favorite level. • Bookmarking fr om an open e-book a. Select and open an e-book fr om your e-book list. b. T ap the e-book title at the upper left of your touch panel c. Fr om the Book Administrator menu, tap one to thr ee bookmark icons in Favorites to denote the e-book’ s favorite level. NOTE: Y ou may import or export annotations, highlights, and bookmarks. For mor e details, r efer to the section Using the Go to, Export, and Import functions .
Using the Go to, Export, and Import functions Using the Go to function Use the Go to function to jump or go to any page in the e-book that you ar e r eading. T o use the Go to function: 1. Fr om an open e-book, tap the curr ent page number at the upper right of the touch panel for about thr ee seconds. 2. Fr om the Page scr een, tap the numbers to key in the page number that you want to go to. 3. T ap Go to to go to your pr eferr ed page. Using the Export function Use the Export function to back up an e-book’ s r eading r ecor ds specifically annotations, highlights, or bookmarks to the Export folder in your device, then copy this folder to your computer . NOTE: Y ou may also back up all the reading r ecords, including r eading per centage and favorite rating, of all e-books to the Export folder in your device. T o do this, tap Setup > System Setup > Export Reading Records fr om the home scr een. T o use the Export function: 1. Fr om the open e-book, tap the e-book title at the upper left of your touch panel. 2. Fr om the Book Administrator menu, tap Export . 3. On the confirmation message, tap OK to save the e-book’ s r eading r ecor ds to the Export folder in your device. NOTE: For mor e details, r efer to the section Copying files to or fr om your device .
Using the Import function Use the Import function to r eplace an e-book’ s r eading r ecor ds specifically annotations, highlights, or bookmarks. T o use the Import function: 1. Copy the backup files fr om the Export to the Import folder in your device’ s dir ectory . NOTE: For mor e details, r efer to the section Copying files to or fr om your device . 2. Select and open an e-book fr om your e-book list. 3. Fr om the open e-book, tap the e-book title at the upper left of your touch panel. 4. Fr om the Book Administrator menu, tap Import . 5. On the confirmation message, tap OK. Y our device searches for the e-book’ s r eading r ecor ds fr om the Import folder and r eplaces the e-book’ s curr ent r eading NOTE: Y ou may also replace all the r eading r ecor ds, including r eading per centage and favorite rating, of all e-books. T o do this, tap Setup > System Setup > Import Reading Recor ds fr om the home scr een. The T ext-to-Speech function Using the T ext-to-Speech function Use the T ext-to-Speech function to enable the virtual r eader to r ead out the text of an e-book. T o use the T ext-to-Speech function: IMPOR T ANT! The T ext-to-Speech function can only work on txt format files. 1. Open the e-book that you want to r ead.
NOTE: For mor e details, r efer to the pr evious section Reading an e-book. 2. Fr om the menu at the bottom of the scr een, tap TTS. 3. T ap Fr om beginning for the virtual r eader to r ead fr om the beginning of the book. T ap Fr om clicking wor d for the virtual r eader to r ead fr om the word that you tap. T ap Pause Reading to temporarily stop the virtual r eader fr om r eading the e-book. NOTE: By default, the virtual r eader’ s reading speed and tone ar e set to normal. Setting up the T ext-to-Speech function T o set up the T ext-to-Speech function: 1. Fr om the home scr een, tap Setup. 2. Fr om the Setup scr een, tap T ext to Speech . 3. T ap the sliders to set up your pr eferr ed speed and tone settings. T agging an e-book T agging e-books pr ovides you with an easy way to organize or gr oup your e-books into categories or types. Cr eating a new tag T o cr eate a new tag: 1. Fr om the home scr een, tap Books. 2. T ap to open the e-book that you want to tag. 3. T ap the book title, then tap T ag on the menu list. 4. In the Selected T ag column, tap Add . 5. Key in the name for the tag. The tag appears in the A vailable T ag column. Using an available tag T o use an available tag: 1. Fr om the home scr een, tap Books. 2. T ap to open the e-book that you want to tag. 3. T ap the e-book title, then tap T ag on the menu list. 4. In the A vailable T ag column, tap the tag that you want to use and drag it to the Selected T ag column. Y ou can use multiple tags for an e-book.
Accessing News Reader T ap News Reader to subscribe to your favorite websites and get news feeds. Subscribing to news feeds Subscribe to your favorite news feeds to r eceive news updates on your device. T o subscribe to news feeds: 1. Fr om the home scr een, tap News Reader. 2. T ap Connect to connect to a network. Y our device searches for available wir eless networks. 3. Fr om the Network Manager scr een, select the network that you want to connect to. Key in the passwor d, if r equir ed. IMPOR T ANT ! T ap the password field to display the virtual keyboar d. Use the virtual keyboar d to key in the network’ s password. 4. In the News Reader scr een, tap the URL field. The virtual keyboar d appears. 5. Key in the web addr ess. The web addr ess is added to the list. 6. T o get the latest updates, tap the news web addr ess that you want to get the latest news feed fr om. 7. W ait for a while until the news feed is displayed. Getting connected wir elessly Use your device’ s built-in W i-Fi capability or built-in 3G function to connect to a wir eless network or wir eless hotspot. This enables you to wir elessly access websites or Inter net-r elated applications such as the News Reader on your device. NOTE: Some ASUS Eee Reader models include a built-in 3G function. Using the Wi-Fi function T o use the Wi-Fi function: 1. Fr om the home scr een, tap Setup. 2. Fr om the Setup scr een, tap Network.
IMPOR T ANT ! T ap the password field to display the virtual keyboar d. Use the virtual keyboar d to key in the network’ s passwor d. 3. Fr om the Connection Manager scr een, select Wi-Fi. The device sear ches for available networks. 4. Fr om the list of networks, tap the network that you want to connect to. T ap Refr esh to r efr esh the network list. 5. If r equir ed, key in the passwor d or passkey , then click OK. Using the 3G function T o use the 3G function: 1. Fr om the home scr een, tap Setup. 2. Fr om the Setup scr een, tap Network. 3. Fr om the Connection Manager scr een, select 3G. 4. Key in the PIN code, and tap OK. W ait for your device to connect to your 3G network pr ovider . IMPOR T ANT ! Ensur e that you subscribe to a mobile 3G service. Contact your mobile service pr ovider for mor e details about subscribing to this service. NOTE: The built-in 3G function is included only in selected ASUS Eee Reader models.
Connecting to the Inter net IMPOR T ANT ! Ensur e that you have connected to a wir eless network befor e connecting to the Inter net. For mor e details, r efer to the pr evious section Getting connected wir elessly . T o connect to the Inter net: 1. Fr om the home scr een, tap W eb Br owser . 2. T ap the URL field to display the virtual keyboar d. 3. Use the virtual keyboar d to key in the URL addr ess of the website that you want to visit. Updating the firmwar e T o update the firmwar e: 1. Cr eate a folder named upfw either in your micr oSD car d or in your device and copy all the firmwar e files to this folder . IMPOR T ANT ! Ensur e that your device is tur ned of f before updating the firmwar e. CAUTION: DO NOT r emove the micr oSD car d fr om your device during the upgrading pr ocess. Doing so will cause permanent damage to your device. 5. When the upgrading pr ocess is completed, pr ess the Page up key to r eboot the device. 6. Fr om the home scr een, tap Setup > System Setup > Language, then select your pr eferr ed language fr om the list. 2. Connect your device’ s USB adapter to a power outlet. 3. Simultaneously pr ess the Power key and the Page up key . 4. Pr ess the Page up key to update fr om the device. Pr ess the Page down key to update fr om the micr oSD card. IMPOR T ANT ! Ensur e that you install a micr oSD car d into the device’ s card slot if you want to upgrade fr om a micr oSD car d.
NOTES : • T o check the firmware version on your device, tap Setup > About fr om the home scr een. • Download the latest firmware fr om the ASUS Support website at http://support.asus.com/download/ . Activating your digital r eader for DRM-protected files Some e-books or digital publications that you have pur chased or downloaded online may contain Digital Rights Management (DRM) pr otection. Y ou need to activate your digital r eader using an Adobe ID to access DRM-pr otected files. IMPOR T ANT ! • Obtain a free Adobe ID fr om the Adobe membership website. • Ensure that you connect to the Internet via wired connection. T o activate your digital r eader for DRM-pr otected files: 1. Fr om the home scr een, tap Setup > Digital Rights Management. 2. Key in your Adobe ID and passwor d. 3. When done, tap Activate Adobe ID. 4 Downloading online IMPOR T ANT ! Ensur e that you connect to the Inter net via wir ed connection. Downloading fr om the Webstor e W ebstor e pr ovides you with the list of webstor es where you can br owse, buy , download e-books on your device. T o download fr om a webstor e: 1. Fr om the home scr een, tap Setup > W eb Stor e . 2. Fr om the list of available webstor es, select the webstor e that you want to access. 3. Y ou may now start to browse, buy , or download e-books from your accessed webstor e.
Downloading fr om the Bookstore Y ou can download free e-books fr om the list of bookstores. T o download fr om a bookstor e: 1. Fr om the home scr een, tap Setup > Bookstor e . 2. Fr om the list of available bookstor es, select the bookstor e that you want to access. 3. Y ou may now start to browse or download e-books fr om your accessed bookstor e. NOTE : Some online bookstor es that will be added to the list may r equir e some mode of payment to download e-books. 5 Accessories Eee Reader case Y our device comes with the durable Eee Reader case for easy storage and to pr otect your device fr om scratches and dents. Storing your device T o stor e your device: 1. Open the Eee Reader case.
2. Place and secur e your device into the Eee Reader case. 6 F AQs Fr equently Asked Questions (F AQs) The scr een r esponse is slow . ASUS Eee Reader uses the e-paper (electr onic paper) technology , which mimics texts and images like on or dinary paper and does not use a backlight unlike the LCD panel display . This allows you to comfortably read e-books or e-files on your ASUS Eee Reader . But these features may pr ovide a slower screen r esponse time than the LCD panel display . The scr een r esponse slows down when I use my ASUS Eee Reader in cold temperatur e. A change in temperatur e may slow down the scr een r esponse on your ASUS Eee Reader . Use your ASUS Eee Reader in environments with ambient temperatur es between 5 o C (41 o F) and 35 o C (95 o F). Ther e ar e some visible shadows or imprints on my ASUS Eee Reader after some period of inactivity or when I use it in a high temperatur e envir onment. After some period of inactivity or in a high temperatur e envir onment, the images or texts on your scr een may partially leave some imprints or visible shadows, which is known as “ghosting”. Pr ess the Page up / Page down keys ( / ) to r efr esh the scr een.
