Except as described in this manual , refer all servicing to qualiîÂÂed personnel. Do not use damaged power cords, ac cessories, or other peripherals . Do not use strong solvents such as thinners, benzene , or other chemicals on or near the sur face. Disconnect the AC power bef ore cleaning. Wipe the Eee Sla te using a clean cellulose spon ge or chamois cloth dampened w ith a solution of nonabrasive deter gent and a few drops of w arm water and remove an y ex tra moisture with a dry cloth. SAFE TEMP: T his device should only be used in environments with ambient temperatur es between 5 o C (41 o F) and 35 o C (95 o F). DO NO T place or drop items that may damage or scratch the device . ASUS Eee Slate vii Charging Y our Batteries If you intend to use battery power , be sure to fully char ge your battery pack before going on long trips . Remember that the power adapter charges the battery pack as long as it is plugged into the computer and an AC pow er source . Be aware that it takes much longer t o charge the battery pack when the Eee Slate is in use. Remember to fully charge the battery (8 hours or more) befor e îÂÂrst use and whenever it is depleted to pr olong battery life. The battery reaches its maximmum capacity after a few full charging and discharging cycles . Airplane Pr ecautions Ask an airline personnel if you want to use y our Eee Slate onboar d an aircraft. Most airlines have restrictions for using electronic devices . Most airlines allow electronic use only between and not during takeoîÂÂs and landings. There are thr ee main t ypes of airport secur ity devices: X-r ay machines (used on items placed on con veyor belts), magnetic detectors (used on people walking through security checks), and magnetic wands (hand-held devices used on people or individual items). Y ou can send your Eee Slate thr ough airport X-ray machines. But do not send your Eee Slate thr ough airport magnetic detectors or expose it to magnetic wands .

ASUS Eee Slate 1-3 Your Eee Slate 1 Po wer switch The pow er switch turns y our Eee Slate on/oî , puts it to sleep, and wakes it up from sleep mode. Slide and r elease the switch to turn on or wake the Eee Slate . Slide and release it again to put the Eee Slate into sleep mode . If the system becomes unresponsiv e, sliding and holding the power switch will f orce the Eee Sla te to power oî . Note that forcing the syst em to power oî ma y result in data loss. Please inspect your data to ensur e there is no data loss. Chapter 1: A Quick Look 1-4 3 Virtual Ke yboard Button The virtual keyboard button displays or hides the virtual keyboard on the screen. Press and hold this butt on for ESC. 4 Orientation Lock S witch T o lock the screen in the current orienta tion, slide this switch to the left (red dot will be visible). T o unlock , slide this switch to the right. 5 Built-in Camera Use the built-in camera f or picture taking, video recording , video confer encing, and other inter active applications. 6 T ouch Screen P anel The touch screen panel allo ws you to opera te your Eee Slat e using up to two îÂÂngers or with the included digitizer pen. 7 Digitizer Pen and Digitiz er Pen C ompar tment The digitizer pen compartment allows stor age of the digitizer pen that may be used to int eract with the touch screen panel. 8 Home Button When the Eee Slate is in Windowsî mode , press this button to preview and switch your open windo ws, or pr ess and hold it for two seconds to enter the secur e logon screen (CTRL -AL T -DEL). When the Eee Slate is not in Windowsî mode , this button acts as the ENTER key . 9 Audio Speaker S ystem The built-in ster eo speaker system allows y ou to hear audio without additional attachments. A udio featur es are software controlled .
ASUS Eee Slate 1-5 10 Memory Card Slot Inser t SD/SDHC/SD X C/MMC card into this slot. 11 USB Port (2.0/1.1) Inser t USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 devices such as keyboards , pointing devices, cameras , and storage devices int o this port. 12 Emergency Shutdown K ey If the system cannot properly turn OFF or restart, press this key using a paperclip to shut down y our Eee Slate . 13 Headphone Output/Microphone Input Combo Jack The stereo c ombo jack (3.5mm) connects the Eee Slate â s audio out signal to ampliîÂÂed speakers or headphones. U sing this jack automatically disables the built-in speaker . The jack is also designed to connect the microphone used f or Skype, voice narrations , or simple audio recordings . 14 mini HDMI port Inser t a mini HDMI cable into this port to connect to a high-deîÂÂnition multimedia inter face (HDMI) device. 15 Built-in Microphone The built-in mono microphone can be used f or video confer encing, voic e narrations, or simple audio rec ordings. 16 V olume Down Button Press this butt on to decrease the v olume in Windo wsî mode, or as a cursor down key in non-W indowsî mode . 17 V olume Up Button Press this butt on to increase the v olume in Windo wsî mode, or as a cursor up key in non-Windo wsî mode.

T ap Next to continue. 1. Select your preferred language, then tap Next. Starting up for the î¿rst time When you use your E ee Slate for the îÂÂrst time , the Windowsî wizard launches automatically to guide you in c onîÂÂguring the basic Windo wsî operating system settings of y our Eee Slate. T o start up for the îÂÂrst time:

T ap Use rec ommended settings to install important and recommended updates . 5. Carefully read the end-user license agreement and tick the two checkboxes if you agree with the terms . T ap Next to continue .

T ap Skip to set up the wireless connection later . Desktop There are sev eral items in the W indowsî NotiîÂÂcation ar ea. T ap the icons to launch them. The actual Desktop screen may vary according to diî erent models . 9. Select the net work's location. T ap Next to continue . 10. Window sî operating system setup is completed.
Chapter 2: Getting Started 2-6 Getting connected wirelessly Use your device â s built-in Wi-F i capabilit y to connect to a wireless network. T his enables you to wirelessly ac cess websites or Internet-r elated applications. T o use the Wi-Fi function: 1. T ap the wireless network icon in the Windowsî NotiîÂÂcation area. 3. Y ou may now start to surf the I nternet or do Internet-relat ed activities such as send and receive e-mail messages, or chat online. 2. Fr om the list, select the network, then tap Connect . T ap the Refresh icon on the upper right corner to refr esh the list. Register at http://vip .asus.com for full service of your device . Y ou may need to key in a passw ord or passkey to ac cess a secured network.

Chapter 3: Using the Eee Slate 3-2 Using Bluetooth Bluetoothî allows y our Eee Slate to wir elessly communicate with Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as computers , mobile phones, PDA s, and the bundled Bluetooth keyboard, within a short range of about ten meters or 30 feet. T o connect to a Bluetooth-enabled device: 1. Ensure that the Bluetooth function is activated. 2. Fr om Contr ol Panel , go to Network and Int ernet > Network and Sharing Cen ter an d select Cha nge adapter settings in the left blue pane. 3. Right-click or touch and hold Bluetooth Network Connection and select View Bluetooth Network Devic es .
ASUS Eee Slate 3-3 4. Select Add a device to sear ch for Bluetooth devices . 5. Fr om the list, select the Bluetooth device that you want your Eee Slat e to communicate with, then tap Next . 6. Key in the Bluetooth security code or passcode into the Bluetooth device to pair the Bluetooth device with your Eee Slate. 7. The Bluetooth device is successfully paired with y our Eee Slate. T ap Close to exit the Bluetooth wizard.
Chapter 3: Using the Eee Slate 3-4 System Recovery ⢠Ensure that the pow er adapter is connected to your Eee Sla te and is plugged to a power outlet. Unstable po wer may cause the syst em recov ery process to fail. ⢠All da ta wil l b e l ost du rin g t he sy ste m r ecov ery pro ce ss . E nsu re th at yo u b ack up al l y our d ata be fo re do ing th e s ys tem rec ov ery p ro ce ss . Using the Rec ov er y DVD The Recovery DVD allows you t o quickly restore the operating syst em, drivers, and utilities of your E ee Slate. Bef ore using the Recov ery DVD, copy your data/îÂÂles t o a USB storage device or to a network driv e and take note of any customiz ed conîÂÂguration settings (such as network settings). After the system rec overy process using the Recovery DVD , visit the Window sî Update site at http://www .update .microsoft.com or the ASUS Support site at http://suppor t.asus.c om to get the latest driver and security updates. T o use the Recovery DVD: 1. Connect an external optical drive to your Eee Slate and insert the Recovery DVD into the optical drive. Ensur e that your Eee Slat e is turned on. 2. Restar t your Eee Slat e when a dialog box appears asking you to restart your device. The system reco very screen appears. 3. F ollow the onscreen instructions to complete the r ecovery process . DO NO T remov e the Recov ery DVD or terminate the syst em reco very process. Doing so will cause damage t o your system. 4. After the system rec overy is completed, restart your Eee Slate . 5. Set up your language, time zone , keyboard, c omputer name, and user name to enter the Windowsî OS. This Recovery DVD is for Eee Slat e only . DO NOT use it on other devices.
ASUS Eee Slate 3-5 Creating and using the USB r ecovery disk Y ou can copy the sy stem reco very îÂÂles from the Recovery DVD to a USB storage device such a USB îÂÂash disk or a USB hard disk driv e. Y ou can then use the USB recov ery disk to recover the syst em of your Eee Slate . ⢠The USB storage device should be mor e than 16GB. ⢠Memor y cards are not supported for this function. ⢠The computer that y ou use to creat e the USB recov ery disk must be installed with either Windo wsî 7 or Vista OS. T o create the USB rec ov ery disk: 1. Using a comput er with Windows Vista/7 OS, con nect the USB storage device to the computerâ s USB port. 2. Place the Recov ery DVD into the optical drive. The make recovery disk screen appears. An alert message appears if you have not connected a USB storage device to the computer . 3. Locate the USB st orage device where y ou want to cop y the system recov ery îÂÂles. All data in your USB stor age device will be lost during the copying process. Ensur e that you back up all your data before cr eating the USB recov ery disk . 4. F ollow the onscreen instructions to complete cr eating the USB recov ery disk . T o use the USB recov ery disk: 1. Connect the USB recov ery disk to your Eee Slate, and then turn on your Eee Slate . The system recov ery screen appears. 2. F ollow the onscreen instructions to complete the r ecovery process .

ASUS Eee Slate vii Charging Y our Batteries If you intend to use battery power , be sure to fully char ge your battery pack before going on long trips . Remember that the power adapter charges the battery pack as long as it is plugged into the computer and an AC pow er source . Be aware that it takes much longer t o charge the battery pack when the Eee Slate is in use. Remember to fully charge the battery (8 hours or more) befor e îÂÂrst use and whenever it is depleted to pr olong battery life. The battery reaches its maximmum capacity after a few full charging and discharging cycles . Airplane Pr ecautions Ask an airline personnel if you want to use y our Eee Slate onboar d an aircraft. Most airlines have restrictions for using electronic devices . Most airlines allow electronic use only between and not during takeoîÂÂs and landings. There are thr ee main t ypes of airport secur ity devices: X-r ay machines (used on items placed on con veyor belts), magnetic detectors (used on people walking through security checks), and magnetic wands (hand-held devices used on people or individual items).
