Y ou can either run the Windowsî Media Cent er with other programs or enjoy it in full- screen mode. With the M edia Cen ter remote , you can play videos as well as music , and view pictures. ASUS NOV A P20/P22 9 Getting Star ted Kno wing the par ts F ront view Refer to the diagram belo w to identify the components on this side of the system. 1 3 4 Slot-in optical drive The system c omes with a slot-in optical disc drive which allows you t o load or eject optical discs easily . The slot-in optical drive can only hold the standard optical discs (12cm). Inserting smaller-sized or larger-sized disc would damage the optical drive . Optical Drive Electronic Eject (touch-sensitive) The optical drive eject has an electronic eject button for unloading the disc. Y ou can also eject the optical disc through any software pla yer . Po wer switch (touch-sensitive) The power swit ch allows pow ering ON and OFF the system and reco vering from STD . Use the switch once to turn ON and once to turn OFF the system. Infrared port The infrared (IrDA) c ommunication por t allows con venient wireless data c ommunication with infrared- equipped devices or computer . This allows easy wire less synchronization with PDAs or mobile phones and even wireless printing t o printers. 1 2 3 2 4

If your power adpater is damaged or fails t o function, contact your retailer . 2.0 USB P or t (2.0/1.1) The USB (Universal Serial Bus) port is compatible with USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 devices such as keyboards , pointing devices , cameras , and hard disk drives, connected in a series up t o 12M bits/ sec (U SB 1. 1) and 480Mb its/s ec (US B 2.0). USB allows many devices to run simultaneously on a single computer , with some peripherals acting as additional plug-in sites or hubs. Also , USB supports hot- swapping function. 5 6 10

F or D-sub connector-equipped display , use the DVI to D-Sub adapter in the package when connecting the display LAN P or t The eight-pin RJ-45 LAN port suppor ts a standard Ether- net cable for connection to a local network. ASUS NOV A P20/P22 19 Using y our NO V A P20/P22 Connecting peripheals Y ou need complet e some peripher als conne ctions befor e starting using your NOV A P20/P22. Display c onnec tion F ollow the instructions below to connect the external display . 1. Connect one end of the DVI cable to the display . 2. Connect the other end of the cable to the DVI por t on the rear side of system. FRONT CENTER/BASS DVI SURROUND S/PDIF OUT S/PDIF IN DCIN 1 2 If your displa y comes without a DVI port, use the DVI to D-Sub adapter in the package when installing the display .
20 Using your NOV A P20/P22 Univ ersal Serial Bus (USB) Devices c onnec tion The USB port is compatible with USB2.0 or USB 1.1 devices like keyboards , mouses , prin ters , et c. Y ou can a ttach an y USB keyboar d and mouse to NOV A P20/P22. The illustration below sho ws the USB keyboard and mouse connecting to the system. ASUS NOV A P20/P22 21 Network c onnection If you want to obtain netw ork access, connect the network cable, with RJ-45 connectors on each end , to the network port on the system and the other end to a hub or switch. The illustration below is the example of your NOV A P20/P22 connected to a network hub or switch for use with the built-in E thernet controller . 22 Using your NOV A P20/P22 Wireless netw ork connec tion T o connect to a wireless network, follow the instructions below . 1. Move the cursor to the network icon on the taskbar and you will see Not Connected . 2. Right-click on the network icon and select Connect to a network. 3. Select the wireless network you want t o connect to from the list. Select Show Wirele ss if you ha ve man y networks in your area.
ASUS NOV A P20/P22 23 4. When connecting, you may hav e to enter a passwor d. 5. After connection has been established , C onnec ted will be shown. Bluetooth wireless c onnec tion NOV A P20/P22 with Bluetooth technology eliminates the need for cables f or connecting Bluetooth-enabled devices. Follo w the instructions below to build Bluetooth wireless connection. 1. Double-click the Bluetooth icon on the Windows taskbar to star t the connection wizard. This screen will not appear if no password is needed.
24 Using your NOV A P20/P22 2. Select the Bluetooth device you want t o connect to from the list and click Next to continue. 4. After the setup completes , click Next to continue . If you do not see the device you w ant to connect on the Bluetooth device list, click Refresh to search f or the Bluetooth devices again. 3. Y ou may need to enter the password if the devic e requires authentication.
ASUS NOV A P20/P22 25 5. The device y ou connect to will be shown. 6. Click the New C onnec tion button and follo w the previous instructions to add more Bluetooth devices. Y our NOV A P20/P22 can connect multiple devices at a time via Bluetooth.

Ejecting an optical disc 1. While the system pow er is on, press the ejec t button. 2. Remove the disc fr om the opening.
ASUS NOV A P20/P22 27 Enjo ying instant music Through the pair of built-in Hi-F i speak ers locatet d at the front side of ASUS NOV A, you can alway s enjoy high quality music without extra speakers. ASUS NOV A also suppor ts analog and digital speakers with Dolbyî Digital Live or DTS connect technology , refer to next sections for detailed conï¬Âgurations. ConîÂÂguring audio output ASUS NOV A P20/P22 suppor ts different types of audio conï¬Âgurations . Y ou ma y set up the system using stereo speakers or a multi-channel audio speaker system. Connect your speaker system to NOV A P20/P22, and then conï¬Âgur e your audio output through the software. Speaker c onï¬Âgurations Y ou may set up the system with the following speaker conï¬Âgurations: Speaker types A stereo speaker set is a left-right, t wo channel speaker system. A multi-channel audio speaker has a left-r ight fron t and left- right rear channel, and it may include a subwoofer and a c enter speaker . A subwoof er provides enhanced bass sounds. âÂÂ.1â indicates a subw oofer . For instanc e, 5.1 channels refers to an six-speaker mode and uses two front speakers (left-right), two rear speakers (left-right), a center speaker , and a subwoofer . 28 Using your NOV A P20/P22 C onnecting to analog sp eak ers ASUS NOV A P20/P22 is equipped with a line-out jack (lime) that allows you t o connect to stereo speakers. There are thr ee sound connectors enabling you to conï¬Âgur e an up to 5.1 channel audio setup . Refer to the table below f or the audio connec tors on the rear panel and their functions. F or stereo speakers P20/P22 Description FRONT S/PDIF OUT F ront connects to stereo speakers. P20/P22 Description FRONT S/PDIF OUT FRONT connects to the FRONT por t on the sub- woofer . SURROUND S/PDIF IN SURROUND connects to the REAR port on the subwoof er . CENTER/BASS CENT/BASS connects to the SUB/CENTER port on the subwoof er . F or a multi-channel audio speaker syst em
ASUS NOV A P20/P22 29 C onnecting to digital speakers Y ou can also connec t NOV A P20/P22 to your home stereo or home theater multi-channel audio receiv er/ampliï¬Âer to use your existing speaker system. ⢠Digital output: Plug an audio cable with a mini jack-s/PDIF adapter from the S/PDIF Out port on the system rear panel to your ampliï¬Âer . 30 Using your NOV A P20/P22 C onï¬Âguring audio output settings After connecting a speaker system to your NOV A P20/P22, follo w the steps below to c onï¬Âgure audio output: Using analog speakers 1. F rom the Windowsî Vista⢠taskbar , right-click on the volume contr ol icon and then select Playback Devices . 2. Under the Playback windo w , select Speakers and click Set Default . 3. Click C onï¬Âgure and the Speaker Setup window pops up . 4. Select the speak er system you ha ve and click Next. If you are using ster eo speak- ers, select Stereo; 4 speak- ers, select Q uadrophonic; 5.1 channel speakers, selec t 5.1 Surround . Y ou may click T est to test each of your speakers.
ASUS NOV A P20/P22 31 5. Check the box es if you use full-range speakers, and then click Next. This conï¬Âguration scr een varies based on the speakers you are using . F or 5.1 channel speakers users, check the boxes to indicate the speakers that are present in y our surround conï¬Âguration. 6. Click F inish to exit the speaker setup. Using digital speak ers 1. F rom the Windowsî Vista⢠taskbar , right-click on the volume contr ol icon and then select Playback Devices .
32 Using your NOV A P20/P22 2. Under the Playback windo w , select Realtek Digital Out- put and click Set Default . 3. Click Properties and the Realtek Digital Output Pr oper ties window pops up . Click the tabs on the top to conï¬Âgure your pr eferenc es. General F rom the General tab , Y ou can customize the property name and icon, view the con troller/ jack information, and conï¬Âgure the device usage. Suppor t F ormats F rom this tab , Y ou can select the encoded format and the sample rates.
ASUS NOV A P20/P22 33 Lev els Y ou can enable or mute the Realtek digital output level. Enhancements Y ou can apply a special sound effect for the listening conï¬Âguration from this tab . Adv anced F rom this tab , Y ou can click and select the sample rate and bit depth from the drop-down menu for the default format.
34 Using your NOV A P20/P22 Using W indows Media Center Starting Window s M edia C enter Y ou can tak e full contr ol of the W indows Media C enter using your wireless keyboard and either of your remot e controls . T o start Windo ws Media Center , do one of the following: ⢠Pr ess the Media Center button on your Media Center remote . ⢠F rom the Windowsî desktop , click Start > All Progr ams > Window s Media Cen ter . T V Movies* Enjoy your T V/movie viewing experience with the T V Movies feature . Use T V M ovies t o watch liv e T V pr ograms, record T V programs , wat ch recorded pr ograms, view program information, and play DVDs. W atching T V* 1. Pr ess the Live T V button on the remote . T he last viewed T V channel is displayed . 2. Use the Channel up/down buttons t o change channels while watching T V . Recording T V progr ams* 1. Use the Channel up/down or the numeric keys to select the program you wish t o record . 2. Pr ess the Record button on the r emote to start recording . Pla ying T V recordings* 1. Pr ess the Recorded T V button to display a list of rec orded T V programs. *The syst em does not come with built-in T V tuner . T o use the T V function, purchase a T V docking or an external T V box ï¬Ârst.

Media Center automa tically records the program y ou are watching f or up to 30 minutes and sav es it to a buffer . Therefor e, if you pause a live T V program, you can pick up where you left off . W atching DVDs Inser t a DVD into the Super Multi Drive and the DVD will be played aut omatically . Y ou c an also press the DVD button on the remote to pla y it. Music Music provides y ou with a complete music experience . Y ou c an listen to CDs or other music ï¬Âles , crea te your own pla ylists, view album information, and listen to music by albums , genres , ar tists, etc. Adding music CDs to music libr ar y 1. F rom the Media Center main menu , select Music. 2. Inser t a CD into the Super Multi Driv e. The CD will be play ed automatically , and a list of options appear on the lef t side of the â now playing â screen. 3. Select Copy CD, and then select Y es to conï¬Ârm your choic e. The CD is copied and sa ved as music ï¬Âles to the hard disk drive under music library. Pla ying Music 1. F rom the Media Center main menu , select Music > music library to display your music ï¬Âles . 2. Select music to play by albums, genres, ar tists , etc .
36 Using your NOV A P20/P22 Pictures Videos Enjoy and manage your digital phot os/videos or downloaded pictures/videoclips using Pictures Videos. Y ou can bro wse the pictures individually or playing them as a slide show with music background . Viewing pictures 1. F rom the Media Center main menu , select Pic tures Videos > picture library to display your picture folders . 2. Select a folder and press OK to open it. Selec t an image and press OK to view . T o play the pictures in a selected folder as a slide sho w , highlight the folder and press the P lay button to start playing it. Y ou can also select Play slide show on the sidebar . W atching videos 1. F rom the Media Center main menu , select Pic tures Videos > video library to display your videos . 2. highlight a video and press the Pla y button to start playing it.

Before using the Reco very DVD, copy your data ï¬Âles (such as Outlook PST ï¬Âles) to ï¬Âoppy disks or to a network driv e and make note of any cust omized conï¬Âguration settings (such as netw ork settings). 1. Insert the Recovery D VD into the optical driv e (System needs to be power ed ON). 2. Restart the system and press <DEL> on bootup to enter the BIOS setup . G o to Boot > Boot Device Pr iority and select the optical drive (may be labeled as âÂÂCDROM:XXXXâÂÂ) as the 1st Boot Device. 3. Pr ess <F10> to sav e the conï¬Âguration and reboot fr om the Recov er y DVD . 4. Select a par tition option and click Next. P ar tition options: Recov er system to a partition only . This option will delete only the partition you select from below , allowing y ou to keep other par titions , and crea te a new system partition as drive âÂÂCâ . Recov er system to entire HD . This option will delete all partitions from your hard disk drive and create a new syst em par tition as drive âÂÂC â . 5. F ollow the on-screen instructions to complete the r ecov er y process. Y ou will lose all your da ta during the system recov ery . Ensure to back up your important data before rec overing your system.

It may take some time to reinstall all the drivers. If the screensav er starts, press any key to bring back the installation screen.

The slot-in optical drive can only hold the standard optical discs (12cm). Inserting smaller-sized or larger-sized disc would damage the optical drive . Optical Drive Electronic Eject (touch-sensitive) The optical drive eject has an electronic eject button for unloading the disc. Y ou can also eject the optical disc through any software pla yer . Po wer switch (touch-sensitive) The power swit ch allows pow ering ON and OFF the system and reco vering from STD . Use the switch once to turn ON and once to turn OFF the system. Infrared port The infrared (IrDA) c ommunication por t allows con venient wireless data c ommunication with infrared- equipped devices or computer . Move the cursor to the network icon on the taskbar and you will see Not Connected . 2. Right-click on the network icon and select Connect to a network. 3. Select the wireless network you want t o connect to from the list. Select Show Wirele ss if you ha ve man y networks in your area.

Bluetooth wireless c onnec tion NOV A P20/P22 with Bluetooth technology eliminates the need for cables f or connecting Bluetooth-enabled devices. Follo w the instructions below to build Bluetooth wireless connection. 1. Double-click the Bluetooth icon on the Windows taskbar to star t the connection wizard. This screen will not appear if no password is needed.

If you do not see the device you w ant to connect on the Bluetooth device list, click Refresh to search f or the Bluetooth devices again. 3. Y ou may need to enter the password if the devic e requires authentication.

Connect your speaker system to NOV A P20/P22, and then conï¬Âgur e your audio output through the software. Speaker c onï¬Âgurations Y ou may set up the system with the following speaker conï¬Âgurations: Speaker types A stereo speaker set is a left-right, t wo channel speaker system. A multi-channel audio speaker has a left-r ight fron t and left- right rear channel, and it may include a subwoofer and a c enter speaker . Click C onï¬Âgure and the Speaker Setup window pops up . 4. Select the speak er system you ha ve and click Next. If you are using ster eo speak- ers, select Stereo; 4 speak- ers, select Q uadrophonic; 5.1 channel speakers, selec t 5.1 Surround . Y ou may click T est to test each of your speakers.

F rom the Windowsî Vista⢠taskbar , right-click on the volume contr ol icon and then select Playback Devices .

Click the tabs on the top to conï¬Âgure your pr eferenc es. General F rom the General tab , Y ou can customize the property name and icon, view the con troller/ jack information, and conï¬Âgure the device usage. T o start Windo ws Media Center , do one of the following: ⢠Pr ess the Media Center button on your Media Center remote . ⢠F rom the Windowsî desktop , click Start > All Progr ams > Window s Media Cen ter . T V Movies* Enjoy your T V/movie viewing experience with the T V Movies feature . Use T V M ovies t o watch liv e T V pr ograms, record T V programs , wat ch recorded pr ograms, view program information, and play DVDs. W atching T V* 1. Pr ess the Live T V button on the remote . T he last viewed T V channel is displayed . 2. Use the Channel up/down buttons t o change channels while watching T V . Recording T V progr ams* 1. Use the Channel up/down or the numeric keys to select the program you wish t o record . 2. Pr ess the Record button on the r emote to start recording . Pla ying T V recordings* 1. Y ou c an listen to CDs or other music ï¬Âles , crea te your own pla ylists, view album information, and listen to music by albums , genres , ar tists, etc. Adding music CDs to music libr ar y 1. F rom the Media Center main menu , select Music. 2. Inser t a CD into the Super Multi Driv e. The CD will be play ed automatically , and a list of options appear on the lef t side of the â now playing â screen. 3. Select Copy CD, and then select Y es to conï¬Ârm your choic e. The CD is copied and sa ved as music ï¬Âles to the hard disk drive under music library. Pla ying Music 1. F rom the Media Center main menu , select Music > music library to display your music ï¬Âles . 2. Select music to play by albums, genres, ar tists , etc .

Y ou can bro wse the pictures individually or playing them as a slide show with music background . Viewing pictures 1. F rom the Media Center main menu , select Pic tures Videos > picture library to display your picture folders . 2. Select a folder and press OK to open it. Selec t an image and press OK to view . T o play the pictures in a selected folder as a slide sho w , highlight the folder and press the P lay button to start playing it. Y ou can also select Play slide show on the sidebar . W atching videos 1. F rom the Media Center main menu , select Pic tures Videos > video library to display your videos . 2. highlight a video and press the Pla y button to start playing it.

Th e Rec overy DV D , w orking with the Suppor t DVD , provides a c omprehensive rec overy solution that quickly restores your syst em to its original working state , provided that your hard disk drive is in good w orking order . Before using the Reco very DVD, copy your data ï¬Âles (such as Outlook PST ï¬Âles) to ï¬Âoppy disks or to a network driv e and make note of any cust omized conï¬Âguration settings (such as netw ork settings). 1. Insert the Recovery D VD into the optical driv e (System needs to be power ed ON). 2. Restart the system and press <DEL> on bootup to enter the BIOS setup . G o to Boot > Boot Device Pr iority and select the optical drive (may be labeled as âÂÂCDROM:XXXXâÂÂ) as the 1st Boot Device. 3. Pr ess <F10> to sav e the conï¬Âguration and reboot fr om the Recov er y DVD . 4. Select a par tition option and click Next. P ar tition options: Recov er system to a partition only . This option will delete only the partition you select from below , allowing y ou to keep other par titions , and crea te a new system partition as drive âÂÂCâ . Recov er system to entire HD . This option will delete all partitions from your hard disk drive and create a new syst em par tition as drive âÂÂC â . 5. F ollow the on-screen instructions to complete the r ecov er y process. Y ou will lose all your da ta during the system recov ery . Ensure to back up your important data before rec overing your system.
38 Recovering y our system 6. After the system r ecovery is completed , eject the the Recov er y DVD from the optical drive . 7. Restart the system and press <DEL> on bootup to enter the BIOS setup . G o to Boot > Boot Device Pr iority and reset the hard disk drive (ma y be labeled as âÂÂHDD:XXX XâÂÂ) as the 1st Boot Device. 8. Pr ess <F10> to sav e the conï¬Âguration and reboot the system. 9. Inser t the Support DVD into the optical drive. 10. Click ASUS InstAll - Drivers Installa tion Wizard from the Drivers tab and install all the driv ers. It may take some time to reinstall all the drivers. If the screensav er starts, press any key to bring back the installation screen.

T he Recov er y P ar tition provides a comprehensiv e recov er y solution that quick ly rest ores your system â s sof tware to its original working state, provided that your har d disk drive is in good working order . Befor e using the Recovery Partition, cop y your data ï¬Âles (such as Outlook PST ï¬Âles) to ï¬Âopp y disks or to a network drive and make note of any cust omized conï¬Âguration settings (such as network settings). DO NO T delete the partition named âÂÂRECOVERY .â The Recovery P ar tition is creat ed at the factor y and cannot be restored by the user if delet ed. T ake your system to an authorized ASUS service center if you hav e problems with the recov ery process. 1. Pr ess <F9> during bootup (requires a Recov er y P ar tition) 2. Pr ess <Enter> to select Window s Setup [EMS Enabled] 3. Read the â ASUS Pr eload W izardâ screen and click Next. 4. Select a par tition option and click Next.
