The frame and front axle will be repaired free of charge f or five y ears from the date of purchase if def ectiv e in material or workmanship . All of the abov e warranty cov erage applies f or only 90 da ys from the date of purchase if this riding equipment is ev er used f or commercial or rental pur poses . In all cases, if repair pro v es impossible , the r iding equipment will be replaced free of charge with the same or an equivalent model. The batter y will be replaced free of charge f or 90 days from the date of purchase if def ective in material or workman- ship (our testing prov es that it will not hold a charge). Sears will NO T pay for: • Expendable items that become w orn dur ing normal use, including but not limited to b lades, spark plugs, air cleaners, belts , and oil filters. • Standard maintenance ser vicing, oil changes , or tune-ups. • Tire replacement or repair caused by punctures from outside objects , such as nails, thor ns, stumps , or glass. • Tire or wheel replacement or repair resulting from normal wear , accident, or improper operation or maintenance. • Repairs necessar y because of operator ab use, including but not limited to damage caused b y towing objects bey ond the capability of the r iding equipment, impacting objects that bend the frame or cr ankshaft, or ov er- speeding the engine. • Repairs necessar y because of operator negligence , including but not limited to , electr ical and mechanical damage caused by improper stor age, f ailure to use the proper grade and amount of engine oil, f ailure to keep the deck clear of flammable debris, or f ailure to maintain the riding equipment according to the instr uctions contained in the opera- tor's manual. • Engine (fuel system) cleaning or repairs caused by fuel determined to be contaminated or o xidized (stale). In general, fuel should be used within 30 da ys of its purchase date. • Normal deter ioration and wear of the e xterior finishes, or product label replacement. 4 GENERAL OPERA TION • Read, understand, and f ollow all instructions in the manual and on the unit bef ore star ting. • Do not put hands or f eet near rotating par ts or under the machine. Keep clear of the discharge opening at all times. • Only allow responsib le adults, who are familiar with the instructions, to operate the unit (local regulations can restrict operator age). • Clear the area of objects such as rocks , toys, wire , etc., which could be pick ed up and thrown by the blade(s). • Be sure the area is clear of other people bef ore mow- ing. Stop the unit if any one enters the area. • Ne v er carr y passengers . • Do not mow in re verse unless absolutely necessary . Alwa ys look down and behind bef ore and while tra vel- ling in re v erse. • Ne v er direct discharge material toward an yone . Av oid discharging material against a wall or obstruction. Material may ricochet back to ward the operator . Stop the blade(s) when crossing g ra v el surf aces. • Do not operate the machine without the entire gr ass catcher , discharge guard (deflector), or other safety de vices in place and operational. • Slow do wn bef ore turning. • Ne v er leav e a r unning unit unattended. Always disen- gage the blades (PT O), set parking brake , stop engine, and remo v e ke ys before dismounting. • Disengage blades (PT O) when not mowing. Shut off engine and wait f or all par ts to come to a complete stop bef ore cleaning the machine, remo ving the gr ass catcher , or unclogging the discharge guard. • Operate the machine only in da ylight or good ar tificial light. • Do not operate the unit while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. • W atch for traffic when oper ating near or crossing roadwa ys. • Use e xtra care when loading or unloading the unit into a trailer or truck. • Alwa ys wear ey e protection when operating this unit. • Data indicates that operators , age 60 years and abov e, are inv olved in a large percentage of pow er equipment-related injuries. These operators should e v aluate their ability to operate the equipment saf ely enough to protect themselves and others from injury . • F ollow the man uf acturer’ s recommendations f or wheel weights or counterweights . • K eep in mind the operator is responsible f or accidents occurring to other people or proper ty . • All drivers should seek and obtain prof essional and practical instruction. • Alwa ys wear substantial f ootwear and trousers. Ne v er operate when baref oot or wearing sandals. • Bef ore using, alwa ys visually check that the b lades and blade hardw are are present, intact, and secure. Replace worn or damaged par ts. • Disengage attachments bef ore: refueling, removing an attachment, making adjustments (unless the adjustment can be made from the operator’ s posi- tion). • When the machine is parked, stored, or left unattend- ed, low er the cutting means unless a positive mechanical lock is used. • Bef ore leaving the oper ator’ s position f or any reason, engage the parking brake (if equipped), disengage the blades (PT O), stop the engine, and remo v e the key . • T o reduce fire hazard, k eep the unit free of grass, leav es, & e xcess oil. Do not stop or park ov er dr y leav es, grass , or combustible materials. • It is a violation of Calif ornia Public Resource Code Section 4442 to use or operate the engine on or near any f orest-cov ered, brush-covered, or g rass-cov ered land unless the e xhaust system is equipped with a spark arrester meeting any applicable local or state laws . Other states or federal areas ma y hav e similar laws . • OSHA regulations ma y require the use of hearing protection when e xposed to sound le v els greater than 85 dBA f or an 8 hour time period. Read these saf ety rules and follo w them closely . F ailure to obey these rules could result in loss of control of unit, se v ere personal injur y or death to y ou, or bystanders, or damage to proper ty or equipment. This mowing dec k is capable of amputating hands and feet and thro wing objects. The triangle in text signifies important cautions or war nings which must be f ollowed. TRANSPORTING AND ST ORA GE • When transpor ting the unit on an open trailer , make sure it is f acing f orward, in the direction of tr av el. If the unit is f acing backw ards, wind lift could damage the unit. • Alwa ys obser ve saf e refueling and fuel handling prac- tices when refueling the unit after transpor tation or storage . • Ne v er store the unit (with fuel) in an enclosed poorly ventilated structure . Fuel vapors can tr avel to an igni- tion source (such as a furnace, water heater , etc.) and cause an e xplosion. Fuel v apor is also to xic to humans and animals. • Alwa ys follo w the engine manual instructions f or storage preparations bef ore storing the unit for both shor t and long term per iods. • Alwa ys follo w the engine manual instructions f or proper star t-up procedures when returning the unit to ser vice . • Ne v er store the unit or fuel container inside where there is an open flame or pilot light, such as in a water heater . Allow unit to cool bef ore storing. CA UTION This machine produces sound le v els in e xcess of 85 dBA at the operator’ s ear and can cause hearing loss though extended periods of exposure . 5 CHILDREN T r agic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the presence of children. Children are often attracted to the unit and the mowing activity . Nev er assume that children will remain where you last sa w them. • K eep children out of the mowing area and under the watchful care of another responsib le adult. • Be aler t and turn unit off if children enter the area. • Bef ore and during rev erse operation, look behind and down f or small children. • Ne v er carr y children, e ven with the b lade(s) off . They ma y f all off and be seriously injured or interfere with saf e unit operation. Children who have been giv en rides in the past may suddenly appear in the mo wing area f or another ride and be r un o v er or back ed over by the machine . • Ne v er allow children to oper ate the unit. • Use e xtra care when approaching b lind corners, shrubs, trees, or other objects that ma y obscure vision. EMISSIONS • Engine e xhaust from this product contains chemicals known, in certain quantities, to cause cancer , bir th def ects, or other reproductiv e har m. • Look f or the rele v ant Emissions Durability P eriod and Air Inde x inf ormation on the engine emissions label. IGNITION SYSTEM • This spark ignition system complies with Canadian standard ICES-002. SLOPE OPERA TION Slopes are a major f actor related to loss-of-control and tip- ov er accidents, which can result in se vere injury or death. Operation on all slopes requires e xtra caution. If you cannot back up the slope or if y ou feel uneasy on it, do not operate on it. Control of a walk-behind or ride-on machine sliding on a slope will not be regained by the application of the br ake . The main reasons f or loss of control are: insufficient tire grip on the ground, speed too f ast, inadequate braking, the type of machine is unsuitable f or its task, lack of a wareness of the ground conditions , incorrect hitching and load distri- bution. • Mow across slopes , not up and down. • W atch for holes , ruts, or bumps . Unev en terrain could ov er tur n the unit. T all g rass can hide obstacles . • Choose a slow speed so that y ou will not have to stop or change speeds while on the slope. • Do not mow on wet g rass. Tires may loose tr action. • Ne v er mow do wn slopes. • A void star ting, stopping, or turning on a slope. If tires lose traction (i.e . machine stops f orward motion on a slope), disengage the blade(s) (PT O) and drive slo w off the slope. • K eep all movement on slopes slo w and gradual. Do not make sudden changes in speed or direction, which could cause the machine to rollov er . • Use e xtra care while operating machines with g rass catchers or other attachments; they can aff ect the stability of the unit. Do not use on steeps slopes. • Do not tr y to stabiliz e the machine by putting y our f oot on the ground (ride-on units). • Do not mow near drop-offs , ditches, or embank- ments. The mow er could suddenly turn over if a wheel is ov er the edge of a cliff or ditch, or if an edge cav es in. • Do not use grass catchers on steep slopes . • Do not mow slopes if y ou cannot back up them. • See your authorized dealer/retailer f or recommenda- tions of wheel weights or counterweights to impro ve stability . • Remov e obstacles such as rocks, tree limbs , etc. • Use slow speed. Tires ma y lose traction on slopes e v en through the brak es are functioning properly . • Do not turn on slopes unless necessar y , and then, turn slowly and gradually uphill, if possib le. Nev er mow do wn slopes. T O WED EQUIPMENT (RIDE-ON UNITS) • T o w only with a machine that has a hitch designed for towing. Do not attach towed equipment e xcept at the hitch point. • F ollow the man uf acturer’ s recommendations f or weight limit f or towed equipment and towing on slopes. See attaching a trailer under OPERA TION. • Ne v er allow children or others in or on to wed equip- ment. • On slopes, the w eight of the towed equipment ma y cause loss of traction and loss of control. • T r a vel slo wly and allow extr a distance to stop. • Do not shift to neutral and coast down hill. W ARNING Ne v er operate on slopes greater than 17.6 percent (10°) which is a rise of 3-1/2 feet (106 cm) v er tically in 20 f eet (607 cm) horizontally . Select slow ground speed bef ore driving onto slope. Use e xtra caution when operating on slopes with rear- mounted grass catchers . Mow across the f ace of slopes, not up and down,use caution when changing directions and DO NO T ST AR T OR ST OP ON SLOPE. Not for Reproduction
WARNING: To avoid serious injury, operate your unit up and down the face of slopes, never across the face. Do not operate on slopes greater than 10 de grees. Make turns gradually to prevent tippin g or loss of control. Exercise extreme caution when chan gin g direction on slopes. Brakin g may be affected by attachments. Reduce speed on slopes. 1. Fold this pa ge alon g dotted line indicated above. 2. Hold pa g e before you so that its left edg e is vertically parallel to a tree trunk or other upri ght structure. 3. Si ght across the fold in the direction of hill slope you want to measure. 4. Compare the an gle of the fold with the slope of the hill. 7 SER VICE AND MAINTENANCE Safe Handling of Gasoline • Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars , pipes, and other sources of ignition. • Use only approv ed gasoline containers. • Ne v er remov e the gas cap or add fuel with the engine running. Allow the engine to cool bef ore refueling. • Ne v er fuel the machine indoors. • Ne v er store the machine or fuel container where there is an open flame, spark, or pilot light such as near a water heater or other appliance . • Ne v er fill containers inside a v ehicle or on a truck bed with a plastic bed liner . Alwa ys place containers on the ground a wa y from your v ehicle before filling. • Remov e gas-powered equipment from the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground. If this is not possi- ble , then refuel such equipment on a trailer with a por table container , rather than from a gasoline dis- penser nozzle. • K eep nozzle in contact with the r im of the fuel tank or container opening at all times until fueling is com- plete. Do not use a nozzle loc k-open device. • If fuel is spilled on clothing, change clothing immedi- ately . • Ne v er ov er-fill the fuel tank. Replace gas cap and tighten securely . • Use e xtra care in handling gasoline and other fuels . They are flammab le and vapors are e xplosive. • If fuel is spilled, do not attempt to star t the engine but mov e the machine awa y from the area of spillage and av oid creating any source of ignition until fuel v apors hav e dissipated. • Replace all fuel tank caps and fuel container caps securely . Service & Maintenance • Ne v er run the unit in an enclosed area where carbon mono xide fumes ma y collect. • K eep nuts and bolts, especially b lade attachment bolts, tight and k eep equipment in good condition. • Ne v er tamper with saf ety de vices. Check their proper operation regularly and make necessary repairs if they are not functioning properly . • K eep unit free of grass, lea ves, or other debris build- up . Clean up oil or fuel spillage. and remov e any fuel- soaked debris. Allow machine to cool bef ore storage . • If you strik e an object, stop and inspect the machine. Repair , if necessar y , bef ore restar ting. • Ne v er make adjustments or repairs with the engine running. • Check g rass catcher components and the discharge guard frequently and replace with manuf acturer’ s rec- ommended par ts, when necessary . • Mower b lades are shar p . Wr ap the blade or w ear glov es, and use e xtra caution when servicing them. • Check br ake oper ation frequently . Adjust and service as required. • Maintain or replace saf ety and instructions labels, as necessar y . • Do not remov e the fuel filter when the engine is hot as spilled gasoline ma y ignite. Do not spread fuel line clamps fur ther than necessar y . Ensure clamps grip hoses firmly over the filter after installation. • Do not use gasoline containing METHANOL, gasohol containing more than 10% ETHANOL, gasoline addi- tives , or white gas because engine/fuel system dam- age could result. • If the fuel tank must be drained, it should be dr ained outdoors. • Replace f aulty silencers/mufflers . • Maintain or replace saf ety and instruction labels as necessar y . • Use only f actor y authorized replacement parts when making repairs. • Alwa ys comply with factory specifications on all set- tings and adjustments. • Only authorized ser vice locations should be utiliz ed f or major ser vice and repair requirements . • Ne v er attempt to make major repairs on this unit unless you ha ve been properly trained. Improper ser vice procedures can result in hazardous operation, equipment damage and voiding of man ufacturer’ s warranty . • On multiple b lade mow ers, tak e care as rotating one blade can cause other b lades to rotate. • Do not change engine gov er nor settings or ov er- speed the engine. Operating the engine at excessiv e speed can increase the hazard of personal injur y . • Disengage drive attachments, stop the engine , remov e the key , and disconnect the spark plug wire(s) bef ore: clearing attachment blockages and chutes , perf orming ser vice work, str iking an object, or if the unit vibrates abnormally . After str iking an object, inspect the machine f or damage and make repairs bef ore restar ting and operating the equipment. • Ne v er place hands near the moving parts, such as a h ydro pump cooling f an, when the tractor is running. (Hydro pump cooling f ans are typically located on top of the transaxle). • Units with h ydraulic pumps , hoses, or motors: W ARN- ING: Hydraulic fluid escaping under pressure ma y hav e sufficient force to penetr ate skin and cause seri- ous injur y . If foreign fluid is injected into the skin it must be surgically remov ed within a fe w hours by a doctor f amiliar with this f orm of injur y or gangrene ma y result. K eep body and hands awa y from pin holes or nozzles that eject h ydraulic fluid under high pressure. Use paper or cardboard, and not hands, to search f or leaks. Make sure all h ydraulic fluid con- nections are tight and all h ydraulic hoses and lines are in good condition bef ore applying pressure to the system. If leaks occur , hav e the unit ser viced imme- diately by y our author ized dealer . • W ARNING: Stored energy device . Improper release of springs can result in ser ious personal injury . Springs should be remov ed by an authorized techni- cian. • Models equipped with an engine radiator: W ARNING: Stored energy de vice. T o prev ent serious bodily injur y from hot coolant or steam blo w-out, nev er attempt to remov e the radiator cap while the engine is running. Stop the engine and wait until it is cool. Sit in seat. 2. Start the engine (see “To Start Engine”). 3. Pull the mower blade switch UP to turn the mower blades ON. To Stop the Engine: 1. Move ground speed levers to START/PARK. 2. Move parking brake lever to ENGAGE position. 3. Move engine speed control to SLOW. 4. Turn ignition switch to OFF . To T urn the Mower Blades Off: 1. Push the mower blade switch DOWN to turn the mower blades OFF. To Drive: 1. Start the engine (see “To Start Engine”). 2. Move parking brake control to DISENGAGE position. 3. Move both ground speed levers in from PARK position. 4. Move levers as shown to travel. 7102576 7102578 Sit in the seat. Move the ground speed levers to START/PARK positions (move both levers out). Move parking brake control to ENGAGE position. Turn the mower blades OFF (push switch down). Move engine speed control to FAST position (levers full forward). Pull the choke knob up to CLOSED position. Turn ignition switch to ST ART to crank the engine. INST ALLING THE SEA T 1. Raise the seat base (see Figure 1). 2. Align the holes in the seat bottom with the holes in the seat base. 5/16-18 x 3/4 5/16-18 x 3/4 14-19 ft-lbs 19-25 Nm Figure 1. Installing the Seat 3. Secure the seat to the seat base with two 5/16-18 x 3/4 serrated head bolts f or the rear seat slots, and two 5/16-18 x 3/4 shoulder bolts f or the front slots. 4. 11 INST ALLING THE SEA T SAFETY SWITCH 1. Squeeze the side clips of the saf ety switch (A, Figure 2), and inser t the s witch into the slot (B) in the seat bottom. Be sure to slide the s witch fully f orward. 2. Connect the harness ter minal housing (C) to the seat s witch. 3. Loop the wire tie (D) around both the s witch body and the terminal housing. SETTING UP THE GROUND SPEED CONTR OL LEVERS 1. Loosen (do not remov e) the hardware securing the ground speed control le vers to the le ver bases (see Figure 3). 2. Raise the le v ers, aligning the upper hole in each le ver with the upper slotted hole in the le v er base. 5/16-18 x 1-3/4 5/16-18 15-17 ft-lbs 20-23 Nm Figure 3. Setting Up the Ground Speed Control Le vers 3. Install the hardw are as shown in Figure 3. Tighten to 15-17 ft-lbs (20-23 Nm). NO TE: Ground speed control le vers must be adjusted prior to use. 13 Fill-Up with FRESH Gasoline Lift the seat deck to access the fuel cap and tank. Remov e the fuel tank cap and fill the tank with fresh fuel. After fueling, securely install the cap and wipe up any fuel that ma y hav e spilled. See the Operator’ s Manual f or fuel recommendations. The single most common ser vice issue is stale or contaminated fuel! Fuel should not be more than 30 da ys old. Use fuel stabilizer to e xtend the lif e of your fuel, and alwa ys store fuel in an approv ed, sealed, plastic gas can. Stale fuel clean-out is not cov ered under your warranty . Fuel T ank Capacity: 4.0 Gallons (15,14 L) Start the Engine and Drive the Unit Off the Crate Ref er to the ST ARTING THE ENGINE and DRIVING PRA CTICE sections of this manual f or information on star ting the unit and driving it off the crate. Remo ve the P ackaging Materials Remov e the cardboard from the crate. Remov e any steel branding securing the unit to the crate . Locate the manual pack et. Read the Operator’ s Manual Locate the operator’ s manual in the manual pac ket. Y ou should alw ays read and f ollow the instructions in the operator’ s manual. Proper care, perf ormance tips, and saf ety inf ormation are located in this impor tant document. Chec k the Tire Pressure Reduce the tire pressures to the pressures shown belo w . Tires are ov er- inflated f or shipping purposes and must be set to the correct pressures f or optimum traction. Rear Tire Pressure: 10-12 PSI Front Tire Pressure: 18-20 PSI Chec k Engine Oil Level Note: Engine is shipped with oil. Add 10W -30 premium engine oil if oil lev el is low . See MAINTENANCE for complete engine oil specifications and maintenance requirements. Lift the seat deck (Figure 17) to access the engine compar tment. Clean the area around the dip stic k/oil fill tube. Remove the dip stic k from the oil fill tube and wipe the dip stick with a clean rag. Inser t the dip stic k into the oil fill tube (thread in or push down completely). Remov e and check the engine oil le vel. Oil le vel should be between Full and Add marks. If necessar y , add oil to the oil fill tube. Replace and fully secure the dip stic k. Charge the Battery Lift the seat deck to access the battery . If the unit is being put into ser vice after the month and year indicated on the batter y date tag (located on top of batter y) charge the battery for one hour at 6-10 amps. 14 OPERA TION Ground Speed Le vers These le v ers control the ground speed of the rider . The left le v er controls the left rear drive wheel and the right le v er controls the right rear dr iv e wheel. Pushing the le v ers out to the side, a way from the oper a- tor’ s lap (top inset, Figure 4), is the proper position for star ting the rider . Pulling the lev ers in across the opera- tor’ s lap puts the lev ers in DRIVE positions. F rom DRIVE position, moving a le v er f orward increases the FOR W ARD speed of the associated wheel. Pulling back on a le ver increases the REVERSE speed. The fur- ther a le v er is pushed, the f aster the drive wheel will turn. See DRIVING PRA CTICE f or steering instructions. P arking Brake Lever Mov e the par king brak e lev er (bottom inset, Figure 4) up and across and into the locking notch to engage and loc k the parking brake . Mov e the par king brak e lev er across and down to disengage the parking brak e. The engine will not star t unless the parking brake is engaged. NO TE: The parking brake must be disengaged bef ore operating the ground speed le vers . Engine Speed Control The engine speed control adjusts engine speed. Alwa ys set the engine speed to F AST for driving and mowing. Mov e the engine speed control back to SLO W to decrease engine speed. 15 Choke CLOSE the choke f or cold star ting (pull knob up). OPEN the choke once the engine starts (push knob down). If the engine is warm, it may not require choking. If this is the case, set the chok e to OPEN (push the knob down) while cranking the engine . In most cases, y ou will need to close the choke in order to start the engine. Mower Cutting Height Switc h T o increase the mo wer cutting height (raise the mower deck), press the top of the y ellow cutting height s witch. T o decrease mo wer cutting height (lower the mo wer deck), press the bottom of the s witch. Mower cutting height range is appro ximately 3-3/4” to 1-1/2” (9,5 to 3,8 cm). The cutting height gauge indicates the position of the mower dec k. The cutting height gauge is located on the front of the rider , just behind the dr iv er’ s left leg. Ignition Switch The ignition s witch star ts and stops the engine; it has three positions: OFF Stops the engine and shuts off the electrical system. RUN Allows the engine to run and pow ers the electrical system. ST ART Cranks the engine f or star ting. NO TE: Ne ver leav e the ignition switch in the R UN posi- tion with the engine stopped. This drains the batter y . W ARNING If you do not under stand how a specific control functions, or have not yet thor oughly read the CONTROL FUNCTIONS section, do so now . Do NO T attempt to operate the rider without first becoming familiar with the location and function of ALL controls. Mower Blade Switc h The yello w mower blade s witch tur ns the mo wer b lades on and off . T o turn the mower b lades ON, pull the switch up . T o turn the mower b lades OFF , push the switch do wn. Fuel T ank Cap A W ARNING Never operate on slopes greater than 17.6 per cent (10°) which is a rise of 3-1/2 feet (106 cm) vertically in 20 feet (607 cm) horizontally . Select slow gr ound speed before driving onto a slope. Use e xtra caution when operating on slopes with a rear-mounted grass catc her . Mow acr oss the face of slopes, not up and do wn. Use caution when changing directions and DO NO T ST AR T OR ST OP ON A SLOPE. Do not load this zero-turn rider on a trailer or truck using tw o separate ramps. Onl y use a single ramp that is at least one foot wider than the width of the rear wheels of this rider . This rider has a zero turning radius and the wheels could fall off the ramps, or the rider could tip over injuring the operator or bystander s. WARNING - TRAILERS CHECKS BEFORE ST ARTING • Check that the cr ankcase oil is filled to full mark on dipstick. • Fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel. FUEL RECOMMEND A TIONS For daily operation: Use only unleaded gasoline with a pump stick er octane rating of 87 or higher . Gasohol (up to 10% eth yl alcohol, 90% unleaded gasoline by v olume) is approv ed as a fuel. Methyl T er iary Butyl Ether (MTBE) and unleaded gasoline blends (up to a maxim um of 15% MTBE by v olume) are approv ed as a fuel. No other gaso- line/alcohol or gasoline/ether blends are appro ved. Do not use fuel additiv es other than fuel stabilizer . For storage: CA UTION: Alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can attract mois- ture which leads to separation and f or mation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage . T o a void engine prob lems alwa ys use fuel stabilizer , especially bef ore storage of 30 da ys or longer . Use fresh fuel ne xt season. See ST ORAGE instructions f or addi- tional inf ormation. Ne v er use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or per manent damage ma y occur . Locate the transmission release le vers (C , Figure 6) at the rear of the unit. 3. Pull both le v ers back and do wn to release the trans- missions (position B, Figure 6). 4. Pull the ground speed control le vers in to their DRIVE positions, and disengage the parking brak e. The rider can now be pushed by hand. 5. After mo ving the rider , set the ground speed control le v ers to ST AR T/P ARK, engage the parking brak e, and push both transmission release le vers f orward to re-engage the transmissions (position A, Figure 6). DO NO T T O W RIDER T o wing the unit will cause transmission dam- age. Do not use another v ehicle to push or pull this unit. Do not use this unit to push or pull another vehicle or object. EMERGENCY ST OPPING In the e v ent of an emergency the engine can be stopped by simply turning the ignition switch to ST OP . Use this method only in emergency situations. For normal engine shut down f ollow the procedure giv en in ST OPPING THE RIDER AND ENGINE. ST OPPING THE RIDER & ENGINE 1. Return the ground speed control lev ers to ST AR T/P ARK positions to stop rider mov ement. 2. Engage the parking brake . 3. T urn off the mower b lades by pushing the mow er blade s witch down to the OFF position. 4. Mov e the engine speed control to SLOW position and turn the ignition switch to OFF . Remove the k ey . ST ARTING THE ENGINE 1. While sitting in the seat, make sure the mo wer blade s witch is OFF and the ground speed control le vers are lock ed in ST AR T/P ARK positions. 2. Mov e the engine speed control fully forw ard to F AST . Set the choke control to CLOSED (pull knob UP). NO TE: A warm engine ma y not require choking. In this case, set the chok e control to OPEN (push knob down). 3. Inser t the ke y into the ignition switch and turn it to ST AR T to crank the engine. 4. After the engine star ts, release the k ey . It will return to the R UN position. Gradually push the choke knob down to OPEN position. W ar m the engine b y r unning it f or at least a minute bef ore tur ning on the mow er blades , or dr iving the unit. AL W A YS operate the unit with the engine speed control set to F AST when mowing or driving. NEVER engage the mower blades with the engine speed set to SLO W . MO WING 1. Star t the engine (see ST ARTING THE ENGINE). 2. Set the mower cutting height to the desired setting using the mower cutting height s witch. 3. Set the engine speed control to F AST . 4. T urn the mower b lades ON (pull switch up). 5. Disengage the parking brake . 6. Mov e the ground speed control lev ers in from ST AR T/P ARK positions to driv e positions (le v ers in across the operator’ s lap). 7. Begin mowing (see DRIVING PRA CTICE). 8. 18 DRIVING PRA CTICE - B ASIC DRIVING W ARNING: Nev er operate on slopes greater than 17.6% (10°). See SLOPE OPERA TION in the saf ety section. Zero turn r iders operate diff erently from other four- wheeled v ehicles. The drive wheels are also y our steer- ing wheels. If you cannot drive the unit on a hill, y ou will not be able to steer the unit on it. Operating zero turn units on slopes requires e xtra caution. The le v er controls of the zero turn rider are ver y respon- siv e, and learning to gain a smooth and efficient control of the rider’ s forward, re verse , and turning movements will take some pr actice. Spend some time going through the f ollowing maneuv ers and becoming f amiliar with how the unit acceler ates, tra v els, and steers - bef ore you begin mowing - is absolutely essential to getting the most out of the zero turn r ider . Locate a smooth, flat area of your lawn - one with plenty of room to maneuv er . (Clear the area of objects, people and animals bef ore you begin.) Oper ate the unit at mid-throttle during this practice session (AL W A YS operate at full throttle when mowing), and turn slowly to pre v ent tire slippage and damage to your la wn. W e suggest you begin with the Smooth T ra v el procedure to the right, and then advance through the f orward, re v erse, and turning maneuvers . Forward T ra vel Practice Gradually mov e both ground speed control le v ers e v enly FOR W ARD from neutral (see Figure 8). Slow do wn and repeat. The BEST method of handling the ground speed control le v ers is in three steps - as shown in Figure 7. FIRST place your hands onto the le v ers as shown. SECOND , to go f orward gradually push the le vers f orward with y our palms. THIRD , to speed up mov e the lev ers far ther f orward. 19 AD V ANCED DRIVING Executing an End-Of-Ro w Zer o Tu r n Y our zero turn r ider’ s unique ability to turn in place allows y ou to tur n around at the end of a cutting row rather than ha ving to stop and make a Y -turn before star ting a ne w row . F or e xample, to e xecute a right end-of row zero turn: 1. Slow do wn at the end of the row . 2. Mov e the LEFT ground speed control le v er f orward slightly while mo ving the RIGHT ground speed control le ver bac k to center and then slightly back from center (see Figure 12). Be sure to keep both wheels moving to a void turf damage. 3. Begin mowing f orward again. This technique tur ns the rider RIGHT and slightly ov er laps the row just cut - eliminating the need to back up and re-cut missed g rass . As you become more f amiliar and experi- enced with operating the z ero tur n rider , you will lear n more maneuv ers that will make y our mowing time easier and more enjo yab le. Remember , the more you practice, the bet- ter y our control of the rider will be! Practice T urning Around a Corner While tra v eling f orward allo w one handle to gradually return back toward neutr al (see Figure 10). Practice sev- eral times bef ore mowing. Install the front hitch rods and secure with hair pin clips (B). 3. Slide the mower dec k backwards and connect the rear lift ar ms to the mo wer dec k. Secure with hair pin clips (A). 4. Inser t the ke y into the ignition switch. T urn the s witch from OFF to R UN without star ting the engine. 5. Use the cutting height s witch to raise the mo wer until it is no longer resting on the 4x4 wood b locks . 24 CLEAN DECK & CHECK / REPLA CE MO WER BLADES Service Interval: 25 hours or as required. 1. Remov e mower dec k (see MO WER DECK REMO V AL in the Operation section). 2. Remov e blade to inspect it or to saf ely access the underside of the mow er deck (see Figure 22). Use a bloc k of wood to prev ent blade rotation while loosen- ing the capscrew b y tur ning it counterclockwise . 3. Remov e the capscrew (A, Figure 23), spring washer (B), and blade . 4. Clean the underside of the mower dec k. 5. Inspect the blades f or nicks or dull edges . Use a file to shar pen b lade to a fine edge. If the blade is dam- aged, it must be replaced. 6. Balance the blade as sho wn in Figure 24. Center the blade’ s hole on a nail lubricated with a drop of oil. A balanced blade will remain le vel. If the blade is not balanced, continue to sharpen the heavy side until it balances. 7. Reinstall the blade with the lift wings (C , Figure 23) pointing up tow ard the mow er deck as sho wn. 8. Reinstall the spring washer (B) and capscrew (A). Use a wooden b lock (B) to pre vent b lade rotation while tightening the capscrew (A) to 45-55 ft-lbs (61- 75 Nm). T urn capscrew cloc kwise to tighten. W ARNING For your per sonal safety , do not handle the sharp mower b lades with bare hands. Careless or improper handling of b lades may result in serious injury . W ARNING For y our personal safety , blade mounting capscrews m ust each be installed with a spring washer , then securely tightened. T orque b lade mounting capscrew to 45-55 ft-lbs (61-75 Nm). 25 Service Interval: 100 hours. 1. Disconnect the cables from the battery , negative cable first (B , Figure 25). 2. Remov e the r ubber str ap securing the batter y , and remov e the batter y . 3. Clean the batter y and battery compar tment with a solution of baking soda and water . 4. Clean the batter y terminals and cable ends with a wire brush until shiny . 5. 26 CHECK / ADJUST PT O CLUTCH Service Interval: 200 hours. The P ower T ake Off (PT O) clutch dr iv es the mower blades . The PT O clutch is engaged and disengaged by the mower b lade switch. Check the PT O clutch adjust- ment e v er y 200 hours of operation. Also perform the fol- lowing procedure if the clutch is slipping, will not engage , or if a new clutch has been installed. 1. Remov e key from ignition s witch and disconnect spark plug wires to prev ent the possibility of acciden- tal star ting while the PT O is being adjusted. 2. Note the position of the 3 adjustment windows (A, Figure 26) in the side of the brak e plate and the nyloc k adjustment nuts (B). 3. Inser t a .012”-.015” (2,5-4 mm) feeler gauge (C) through each window , positioning the gauge between the rotor f ace and the armature face as shown in Figure 27. 4. Alter nately tighten the adjustment n uts (B, Figure 27) until the rotor f ace and armature face just contacts the gauge. 5. Check the windo ws for an equal amount of tension when the gauge is inser ted and remov ed, and make any necessary adjustments by tightening or loosen- ing the adjustment nuts. NO TE: The actual air gap between the rotor and arma- ture ma y v ar y e ven after perf or ming the adjustment pro- cedure. This is due to dimensional v ariations on compo- nent par ts, and is an acceptab le condition. 6. Check the mo wer blade stopping time. The mow er blades and mo wer dr iv e belt should come to a com- plete stop within five seconds after the electric PT O s witch is turned off. NO TE: Change engine oil while the engine is warm. Run the engine f or a f ew minutes, then shut the engine off and allow it to cool. 1. Clean the area around the dip stick (C , Figure 29) and oil drain (A). 2. Remov e the oil drain plug (A) and dip stick (C). Allo w ample time f or complete drainage . 3. Remov e the oil filter (B). Discard the filter . 4. T urn the new filter upside do wn and fill with fresh engine oil. Allow the oil to seep into the ne w filter for two minutes . 5. Using a drop of oil on your finger tip , wet the rubber gasket on the bottom of the ne w filter . 6. Dump the oil out of the filter and install the filter on the filter base. T urn the filter clockwise until the rubber gasket meets the filter base . Then turn 2/3 to 1 full turn more. 7. Reinstall the oil drain plug (A) and route the oil drain hose along side the engine. 8. Fill the crankcase with oil. See CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL abov e. 9. T est run the engine to chec k f or leaks. 29 SER VICE & ADJUSTMENTS GR OUND SPEED CONTR OL LEVER ADJUSTMENT The control le v ers hav e three adjustments: T o Adjust Control Lever Height: Pull the le vers in across the operator’ s lap to their DRIVE positions. Loosen the mount bolts (D , Figure 32) and raise or lo wer the le v ers to the desired position. Tighten the mounting bolts.(D). T o Adjust Control Lever End Gap: The control le v er end gap should be adjusted so that the le v ers do not contact each other when placed in DRIVE positions. Loosen the jam nut (A, Figure 32) and adjust the length of the carriage bolt (B) so that the lev ers do not contact each other . Repeat on the opposite side. Tighten the jam nut (A) to loc k the carriage bolt in position. T o Adjust Operator Clearance: The space between the operator and the control le vers can be increase b y removing the lo wer mounting bolt (D , Figure 32), pivoting the le v er f orward, and reinstalling the capscre w through the control le v er and f orward slot (C). Repeat with the other ground speed le ver . SPEED B ALANCING ADJUSTMENT If the rider veers to the right or left when the ground speed control le v ers are in the maximum f orward posi- tion, the top speed of the right lev er can be balanced by tur ning the adjustment knob (E, Figure 32). Loosen the jam nut and turn the knob COUNTERCLOCKWISE to increase speed or CLOCKWISE to decrease speed. Tighten the jam nut when complete . CUTTING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT T o increase the mo wer cutting height (raise the mower deck), press the top of the mo wer cutting height switch (A, Figure 33). T o decrease mo wer cutting height (lo wer the mower dec k), press the bottom of the switch. Mower cutting height range is 3-3/4” to 1-1/2” (9,5-3,8 cm). The cutting height gauge indicates the position of the mower deck. The cutting height gauge (B) is located on the front of the rider , just behind the dr iv er’ s left leg. Stop the unit, set the ground speed le vers to ST AR T/P ARK positions , set the parking brake le ver to the ENGA GE position, turn the ignition OFF , and wait f or all moving parts to stop. Remove the k ey . 2. Set both transmission release le v ers to the PUSH position. (Ref er to PUSHING THE RIDER BY HAND .) 3. Push the rider forward to mak e sure both transmis- sion brak es are fully engaged and both rear wheels are lock ed in the stationar y position (no rotation). 4. Locate the brake rod (A, Figure 34) and adjustment nut (B). 5. Measure the parking brake spring. Check f or bent blades and replace if necessary . 3. Check the tire pressures . See CHECK TIRE PRES- SURE. 4. Set the cutting height to mid position. Arrange the mower b lades so that they are pointing from side-to- side (see Figures 35 & 36). 5. Measure the distance between the tips of the outside blades and the g round (see Figure 36). If there is more than 1/8" (3 mm) diff erence between the meas- urements on each side, proceed to Step 6. If the dif- f erence is 1/8" (3 mm) or less, proceed to F ront T o Back Le veling. 6. Side-to-side le v eling is accomplished using the threaded rods (A, Figure 37) and trunnion (B) on the right and left rear sides of the mower dec k. Loosen the jam nuts (C) and adjust the nuts up or do wn to adjust the mower le vel. When complete , tighten the jam nuts against the trunnion to lock the adjustment in place. W ARNING Before adjusting the mo wer , turn the mo wer blades OFF , turn the ignition switch OFF , remove the key , and allow all moving parts to stop. T o raise or lower the front of the mow er deck, loosen the tw o rear jam nuts (B) on both sides of the front hitch rod (A). Adjust the front jam nuts (C) on both sides of the front hitch rod (A) to adjust the mower dec k lev el. When adjusted correctly , tighten the rear jam nuts (B) to loc k the front hitch rod in place. 43 SER VICIO Y MANTENIMIENT O Manejo Seguro de la Gasolina • Apague cigarros, puros , pipas y otras fuentes de ignición. • Use sólo los contenedores aprobados para gasolina. • Nunca quite el tapón de la gasolina ni cargue combustib le con el motor encendido . 49 PRE-OPERA CIÓN Llenar con Gasolina FRESCA Le v ante el asiento para ganar acceso al tapón de la gasolina y al tanque. Quite el tapón del tanque y llene el tanque con combustib le fresco . Después de llenar el tanque, instale fijamente el tapón y limpie el comb ustible derra- mado . V ea el Manual del operador para obtener las recomendaciones para el comb ustible. El problema más común en las reparaciones es el com- bustib le viciado o contaminado. El combustib le no debe tener más de 30 días. Use un estabilizador de com- bustib le para extender la vida de su comb ustible y siem- pre almacene el combustib le en un env ase plástico aprobado y sellado para gasolina. La limpieza inter ior por combustib le viciado no está amparada por su garan- tía. Ésta es la posición indicada para arrancar el montab le. Jalar las palancas hacia adentro , encima del regazo del operador , las pone en posición de DRIVE (av ance). Desde la posición de DRIVE (av ance), mov er la palanca hacia adelante aumenta la v elocidad HA CIA ADELANTE de la llanta asociada. Jalar la palanca hacia atr ás aumenta la velocidad de REVERSA. Entre más se empuje una palanca, más rápido girar á la rueda de tracción. Consulte la sección PRÁ CTICA DE MANEJO para obten- er instrucciones de direccionamiento . P alanca del freno de estacionamiento Mue v a la palanca del freno de estacionamiento (encar te inf erior , Figura 4) para arriba y hacia el costado , y hacia adentro de la muesca de trabamiento par a engr anar y tra- bar el freno de estacionamiento . Muev a la palanca del freno de estacionamiento hacia el costado y hacia abajo para desengr anar el freno de estacionamiento . El motor no arrancará si el freno de estacionamiento está eng rana- do . NO T A: Se debe desengr anar el freno de estacionamiento antes de operar las palancas de velocidad de desplaza- miento . Control de V elocidad del Motor El control de v elocidad del motor ajusta la v elocidad del motor . Coloque siempre la velocidad del motor en F AST (rápido) para conducir o podar el césped. Muev a el con- trol de v elocidad del motor de regreso a SLO W (lento) para disminuir la v elocidad del mismo . NO intente operar el tractor sin antes familiarizarse con la ubicación y la función de T ODOS los controles. Ahogador CIERRE el ahogador para arrancar en frío (jale la perilla hacia arriba). ABRA el ahogador una vez que el motor arranque (empuje la perilla hasta adentro). Si el motor está caliente, es posib le que no requiera el ahogador . En este caso , coloque el ahogador en OPEN (abier to) (empuje la perilla hasta adentro) mientras da marcha al motor . En la ma yoría de los casos, ser á necesario que cierre el ahogador para poder arrancar el motor . Ajuste de Altura de Cor te de la Sesgadora P ara aumentar la altura de cor te de la sesgadora (ele var la cubier ta de la sesgadora), oprima la par te superior del ajuste de altura de cor te amarillo de la sesgadora. Par a disminuir la altura de corte de la sesgadora (bajar la cubier ta de la sesgadora), oprima la par te inf er ior del ajuste. El rango de la altura de cor te de la sesgadora es 9,5 a 3,8 cm (3-3/4" a 1-1/2"). El indicador de altura de cor te indica la posición de la cubier ta de la sesgadora. El indicador de altura de cor te se encuentr a en la par te frontal del montable , justo detrás de la pier na izquierda del conductor . Interruptor de Encendido El interruptor de encendido arranca y detiene el motor ; tiene tres posiciones: OFF (apagado) - Detiene el motor y cor ta el sistema eléctrico . P or ejemplo , para ejecutar un giro cero de final de fila a la derecha: 1. Desacelere al final de la fila. 2. Quite la cubier ta de la podadora (v ea REMOCIÓN DE LA CUBIER T A DE LA PODADORA en la sección de Operación). 2. Quite el aspa para inspeccionarla o para ganar acce- so seguro al lado inf erior de la cubier ta de la podado- ra (v ea la Figura 22). Use un bloque de madera para e vitar que gire el aspa mientras afloja el tornillo de cabeza he xagonal girándolo a la izquierda. 3. Quite el tornillo de cabeza hexagonal (A, Figura 23), arandela elástica (B), y aspa. 4. Limpie el lado inf erior de la cubier ta de la podadora. 5. Inspeccione las aspas para v er que no tengan muescas o rebordes desafilados . Use una lima para afilar el aspa a un filo cor tante. Si el aspa está daña- da, debe reemplazarla. 6. Equilibre el aspa como se muestra en la Figur a 24. Centre el orificio del aspa con un clav o lubricado con un a g ot a de ace ite . Un as pa eq ui lib r ad a pe r m an ece r á nivelada. Si el aspa no está equilibrada, siga afilando el lado pesado hasta que esté equilibrada. 7. Reinstale la arandela elástica (B) y tornillo de cabeza he xagonal (A). PRUEB A 3 - EL MOT OR DEBE AP A GARSE SI: • El operador se le vanta del asiento con el interruptor de cuchillas de la sesgadora A CTIV ADO, O BIEN • El operador se le vanta del asiento con las palancas de velocidad de a vance en posición de DRIVE (av ance), O BIEN • El operador se le vanta del asiento con el freno de mano en la posición DESENGRANAR, O • El operador quita la palanca de control de v elocidad de desplazamiento derecha y/o izquierda de su posición ARRANCAR/EST A CIONAR con la palanca del freno de mano en la posición ENGRANAR. PRUEB A 4 - VERIFICACIÓN DE FRENO DE ASP AS Las aspas y la banda de tracción de la podadora deben deten- erse por completo en un lapso de cinco segundos después de poner el interruptor PTO en OFF . Si la banda de tracción de la podadora no se detiene en cinco segundos, póngase en contac- to con el Centro de P ar tes y Reparaciones de distribudor . NO T A: Una vez que se hay a detenido el motor , debe poner el interruptor PT O en OFF , el freno de mano en P ARK y las palan- cas del control de velocidad fijas en la posición de P ARK para que pueda arrancar el motor AD VER TENCIA Si la unidad no pasa una prueba de seguridad, no la opere. Visite un Centro de P artes y Reparaciones de Sears. Bajo ninguna circunstancia intente anu- lar la finalidad del sistema del intercierre de seguri- dad. Intervalo de Ser vicio: 200 horas. 1. Desconecte los cables de la batería, primero el cable negativo (B, Figura 25). 2. Quite la banda de goma que sujeta la batería y quite la batería 3. Limpie la batería y el compar timiento de la batería con una solución de bicarbonato de sodio y agua. 4. Limpie las terminales de la bater ía y los e xtremos del cable con un cepillo de alambre hasta que brillen. 5. Reinstale la batería y sujétela con la banda de goma. 6. Reconecte los cables de la batería: primero conecte el cable positiv o (A, Figura 25), luego conecte el cable negativ o (B). 7. 62 VERIFICAR/AJUST AR EMBRA GUE DEL PT O Intervalo de Ser vicio: 200 horas. El embrague del PT O se embraga y desembraga con el interruptor PT O . El embrague suministra la energía y frena las aspas de la podadora. V er ifique el ajuste del embrague del PT O cada 200 horas de operación. T ambién realice el siguiente procedimiento si se barre el embrague, no embr aga o si instaló un embrague nue v o . 1. Quite la llav e del interr uptor de encendido y desconecte los cables de las b ujías para evitar un posible arr anque accidental mientras ajusta el PT O . 2. T ome nota de la posición de las 3 v entanas de ajuste (A, Figura 26) en el lado del disco por tafreno y las tuercas mecánicas de ajuste (B). 3. Inser te una lámina calibrador a (C) de 2,5-4 mm (.012"-.015") por cada v entana, colocando el cali- brador entre la cara del rotor y la car a del armazón como se muestra en la Figur a 27. 4. Alter nativ amente apr iete las tuercas de ajuste (B , Figura 27) hasta que la cara del rotor y la car a del ar maz ón apenas hagan contacto con el calibrador . 5. V er ifique las v entanas para ver que la tensión sea igual cuando el calibrador se introduce y se saca, y haga los ajustes necesarios apretando o aflojando las tuercas de ajuste. NO T A: El espacio vacío existente entre el rotor y el armazón puede variar aún después de realizar el pro- cedimiento de ajuste. Esto se debe a las variaciones dimensionales de los componentes y es una condición aceptable . 6. V er ifique el tiempo en que se detienen las aspas de la podadora. Las aspas y la banda de tracción de la podadora deben detenerse por completo en un lapso de cinco segundos después de apagar el interruptor PT O eléctr ico . Conceda un buen tiempo para que termine de drenar. 3. Quite el filtro del aceite (B). Tire el filtro a la basura. 4. V oltee el filtro nuev o y llénelo con aceite fresco. Afloje los botones de la cubierta del filtro de aire (A, Figura 30) y remue va la cubierta (B). Limpie cualquier residuo alrededor del filtro de aire. Inspeccione la condición de las superficies de sellamiento del ele- mento del filtro de aire (C) y de la base del filtro (D). Reemplace cualquier par te dañda. 2. Rem ue v a el elemento del filtro de aire (C). 3. Instale el elemento del filtro de aire n ue vo con el lado plisado hacia afuera y asíentelo en los bordes de la base del purificador de aire (D). 4. 65 SER VICIO Y AJUSTES AJUSTE DE P ALANCA DE CONTR OL DE VELOCID AD Las palancas de control tienen tres ajustes: P ara Ajustar la Altura de las P alancas de Control: Jale las palancas hacia adentro , encima del regazo del operador a la posición de DRIVE. Afloje los per nos de montaje (D , Figura 32) y suba o baje las palanca s a la posición deseada. Apr iete los pernos de montaje (D). P ara Ajustar la Brecha Final de las P alancas de Control: La brecha final de las palancas de control deben ajustarse de modo que las palancas no se toquen entre sí cuando se pongan en posición de DRIVE. Afloje la contratuerca (A, Figura 32) y ajuste la longitud del tornillo de cabeza redonda (B) de modo que las palan- cas no se toquen entre sí. Repita lo mismo en el lado opuesto . Apr iete la contra tuerca (A) para fijar el tornillo de cabeza redonda en su posición. P ara Ajustar el Espacio Libre para el Operador: El espacio entre el operador y las palancas de control puede incrementarse quitando el perno de montaje más bajo (D , Figura 32), gir ando la palanca hacia adelante y reinstalando el tornillo de cabeza hexagonal a tra vés de las palancas de control y la ranur a delantera (C). Repita lo mismo con la palanca de v elocidad. AJUSTE DE BALANCEO DE VELOCID AD Si el tractor vira a la derecha o a la izquierda cuando las palancas del control de v elocidad están en la posición de velocidad máxima hacia adelante, la v elocidad máxima de cada una de las palancas puede balancearse girando las perillas de ajuste (E, Figura 32). Gire la perilla A LA IZQUIERD A para aumentar la v elocidad o A LA DERECHA para disminuir la v elocidad. AJUSTE DE LA AL TURA DE CORTE P ara aumentar la altura de cor te de la sesgadora (ele var la cubier ta de la sesgadora), oprima la par te superior del ajuste de altura de cor te de la sesgador a (A, Figura 33). P ara disminuir la altura de cor te de la sesgador a (bajar la cubier ta de la sesgadora), oprima la par te inf er ior del ajuste. El rango de la altura de cor te de la sesgadora es 9,5 a 3,8 cm (3-3/4" a 1-1/2"). El indicador de altura de cor te indica la posición de la cubier ta de la sesgadora. El indicador de altura de cor te (B) se encuentr a en la par te frontal del montable , justo detrás de la pier na izquierda del conductor . Orificio de resor te de retorno RECARGA DE LA BA TERÍA Una batería descargada o una demasiado baja para arran- car el motor puede ser el resultado de un def ecto en el sis- tema de recarga o algún otro componente eléctrico . Si tiene alguna duda sobre la causa del problema, póngase en con- tacto con un dis trib udor . Si necesita reemplazar la bater ía, siga los pasos bajo LIMPIEZA DE BA TERÍA Y CABLES en la Sección de Mantenimiento . P ara recargar la batería, siga las instr ucciones sumin- istradas por el f abr icante del recargador de baterías así como todas las advertencias incluidas en la sección de reglas de seguridad de este libro . Recargue la bater ía hasta que esté completamente cargada (hasta que la gra vedad específica del electrolito sea 1.250 o ma yor y la temper atu- ra del electrolito sea por lo menosde 15.5° C). No recargue a un índice ma yor de 10 amperes . AJUSTES DEL MO T OR El motor está diseñado para brindar un rendimiento correcto bajo todas las condiciones de operación. Empuje la unidad hacia delante para asegurar que ambos frenos de la transmisión estén totalmente engranados y ambas ruedas traser as estén traba- jadas en la posición estacionaria (sin rotación). 4. Ubique la varilla del freno (A, Figura 34) y la tuerca de ajuste (B). 5. Mida el resor te del freno de mano. Su largo compr im- ido , con la palanca del freno de mano en la posición ENGA GE (ENGRANAR), debe ser de 8.89 cm (3- 1/2 ″). La causa del cor te desigual puede ser que la presión de las llantas sea desigual o inadecuada. V ea VERIFICAR LA PRESIÓN DE LAS LLANT AS. Nivelado de un Lado a Otro 1. Con la podadora instalada, coloque el tractor en una superficie lisa y niv elada como un piso de concreto . Gire las ruedas delanteras para que apunten hacia adelante. Apague el motor , ponga el freno de mano en P ARK y espere a que se detengan todas las par tes en movimiento . 2. V er ifique que las aspas no estén dob ladas y reem- plácelas si es necesario . 3. V er ifique la presión de las llantas . V ea VERIFICAR LA PRESIÓN DE LAS LLANT AS . 4. Ajuste la altura de cor te a posición media. Coloque las aspas de la podadora de modo que apunten de un lado a otro (v ea la Figura 35 y 36). 5. Mida la distancia entre las puntas de las aspas e xter- nas y el suelo (v ea la Figura 36). Si hay una dif eren- cia ma yor a 1/8" (3mm) entre las medidas en cada lado , proceda con el paso 6. Si la diferencia es de 1/8" (3mm) o menos, proceda con el Niv elado de Adelante hacia Atrás . 6. El niv elado de un lado a otro se logra usando las v ar- illas roscadas (A, Figura 37) y el muñón (B) en la par te posterior derecha e izquierda de la cubier ta de la sesgadora. Afloje las contratuercas (C) y ajústelas hacia arriba o hacia abajo para ajustar el niv el de la sesgadora. Cuando ter mine, apriete las contratuer- cas unas con otras para sujetar el ajuste en su lugar . La presión de neumáticos desigual o inade- cuada también puede ser caso de un cor te desigual. V éase COMPROBAR LA PRESIÓN DE LOS NEUMÁ TICOS. 1. Gire las cuchillas frontoposterior mente según se m ues- tra en la Figura 38. Mida la distancia desde el suelo hasta la punta frontal de la cuchilla central, y desde el suelo hasta las puntas posteriores de las cuchillas izquierda y derecha (Figura 38). Las puntas frontales deberán ser entre 3 y 6 mm (1/8 pulg. y 1/4 pulg.) más altas que las puntas posteriores. Si no es así, proceda con el paso 2. 2. La barra de enganche frontal (A, Figur a 39) se utiliza para ajustar el niv elado frontoposter ior . Para subir o bajar el frente de la plataf orma del cor tacésped, afloje las dos tuercas de bloqueo (B) en ambos lados de la barra de enganche delantera (A). Ajuste las tuercas de bloqueo (C) a ambos lados de la barr a de enganche (A) para ajustar en niv el de la plataforma del cor tacésped. Cuando estén correctamente ajustadas, apriete las tuer- cas de bloqueo posteriores (B) para b loquear en su posición la barra de enganche delantera. SU ST IT UC I ÓN DE LA CO RE A DE L CO R- T A C É SP ED 1. P osicione el cor tacésped sobre una superficie nivelada. Desactive el PT O , apague el motor , sitúe las palancas de control de velocidad de a vance en EST ACIONAR. Retire la llav e. 2. Retire la tapa de la correa. 3. Inser te el trinquete en el orificio de 9,5 mm (3/8 pulg.) del brazo de polea tensor a (A, Figura 40) y tire para lib- erar la tensión de la correa. 4. Retire la correa de transmisión del cortacésped (B) de la polea del motor de transmisión (C). 5. Retire la correa desde las restantes poleas de la plataf orma del cor tacésped. NO T A: No es necesar io retirar la plataforma del cor- tacésped para cambiar la correa. 6. Instale la nue va correa del cor tacésped en la f or ma que se muestra en la Figur a 40. Figure 39. 70 ALMA CENAMIENT O AD VER TENCIA Nunca almacene la unidad (con combustib le) en una estructura cerrada con poca ventilación. Los vapores del combustible pueden viajar a una fuente de ignición (como un horno, calentador de agua, etc.) y ocasionar una explosión. Los vapores del combustib le también son tóxicos para los humanos y animales. ALMA CENAMIENT O Antes de almacenar su unidad en la temporada baja, lea las instrucciones de Mantenimiento y Almacenamiento en la sec- ción de Reglas de Seguridad, luego realice los siguientes pasos: • Desacople el PT O, ponga el freno de mano y quite la lla ve. • V er ifique el niv el de todos los fluidos. V erifique todos los elementos de mantenimiento . • La vida de la batería se incrementará si la quita, y la coloca en un lugar seco y fresco y la carga por completo una v ez al mes. Si deja la bater ía en la unidad, desconecte el cab le negativo . Es impor tante e vitar que se formen depósitos de goma en las par tes esenciales de la instalación de comb ustible como el car- bur ador , filtro de la gasolina, tubería del combustible y el tanque de gasolina durante el almacenamiento . Además, los combustib les mezclados con alcohol (llamados gasohol o usando etanol o metanol) puede atraer humedad que lle va a la separación y f or mación de ácidos durante el almacenamiento . El gas acídico puede dañar la instalación de combustib le de un motor mientras está en almacenamiento . P ara evitar prob lemas con el motor , la instalación de com- bustib le debe vaciarse antes del almacenamiento de 30 días o más. Siga estas instr ucciones; P ara proteger el motor , se recomienda el uso del estabilizador de combustib le. Antes de arrancar la unidad después de estar almacenada: • V er ifique el niv el de todos los fluidos. V erifique todos los elementos de mantenimiento . • Llene con combustib le FRESCO. • Después de arrancar , permita que el motor se caliente antes de operar . Siempre quite la llave del encendido, desconecte el cable de la bujía y sujételo lejos de la bujía antes de empezar con el mantenimiento, para evitar que el motor arranque accidentalmente. Diagnóstico del T ractor PROBLEMA CA USA REMEDIO El motor no rota ni arranca. Las palancas de v elocidad de av ance no están en ST AR T/P ARK (arrancar). Colóquelas en ST ART/P ARK (arrancar). La cuchilla de la sesgadora está activ ada. Desactív ela. L a s p a l a n c a s d e v e l o c i d a d n o e s t á n e n S T A R T / P A R K . Colóquelas en ST ART/P ARK (arrancar). El ahogador no está en posición de CLOSED. Mue v a el ahogador a la posición de CLOSED. El interruptor de encendido no está en ST AR T. G ir e el in te rru pt or de e n c e n d id o a la po si c i ón de ST AR T . No tiene combustib le. Deje enfriar el motor y llene de nue v o el tanque de combustib le. Motor ahogado . Coloque el ahogador en posición de OPEN (abier to) cuando dé marcha al motor . El combustib le está viejo o viciado , o ha y agua en el combustib le. Drene el combustib le y llene con gasolina fresca. Comuníquese con Piezas y Reparaciones de Sears . Batería descargada. Recargue o reemplace la batería. Reemplace o equilibre las cuchillas. V ea la sección de Mantenimiento . Banda instalada incorrectamente. Reinstale correctamente. La banda de trac- ción de la sesgado- ra se barre o no impulsa. El resor te de la polea tensora está roto o no está debidamente fijo . Repare o reemplace según sea necesario . La banda de tracción está rota. Reemplace la banda de tracción.
