GENERAL OPERATION * Read this operator's manual carefully in its entirety before attempting to assemble this machine. Read, understand, and follow all instructions on the machine and in the manuals) before operation. Keep this manual in a safe place for future and regular reference and for ordering replacement parts , Be completely familiar with the controls and the proper use of this machine before operating it. , This machine is a precision piece of power equipment, not a plaything. Therefore, exercise extreme caution at all times. This machine has been designed to perform one job: to mow grass. Do not use it for any other purpose. , Never allow children under 14 years of age to operate this machine. Children 14 and over should read and understand the instructions and safe operation practices in this manual and on the machine and should be trained and supervised by an adult. , Only responsible individuals who are familiar with these rules of safe operation should be allowed to use this machine. , Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used. Remove all stones, sticks, wire, bones, toys and other foreign objects, which could be tripped over or picked up and thrown by the blade. Thrown objects can cause serious personal injury. , Plan your mowing pattern to avoid discharge of material toward roads, sidewalks, bystanders and the like. Also, avoid discharg- ing material against a wall or obstruction, which may cause discharged material to ricochet back toward the operator. , To help avoid blade contact or a thrown object injury, stay in operator zone behind handles and keep children, bystanders, helpers and pets at least 75 feet from mower while it is in opera- tion. Stop machine if anyone enters area. • Always wear safety glasses or safety goggles during operation and while performing an adjustment or repair to protect your eyes. Thrown objects which ricochet can cause serious injury to the eyes. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and close-fitting slacks and shirts. Shirts and pants that cover the arms and legs and steel-toed shoes are recommended. Never operate this machine in bare feet, sandals, slippery or light-weight (e.g. canvas) shoes. Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts or under the cutting deck. Contact with blade can amputate fingers, hands, toes and feet. A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade contact or thrown object injuries. Many injuries occur as a result of the mower being pulled over the foot during a fall caused by slipping or tripping. Do not hold on to the mower if you are falling; release the handle immediately. Never pull the mower back toward you while you are walking. If you must back the mower away from a wall or obstruction first look down and behind to avoid tripping and then follow these steps: 1. Step back from mower to fully extend your arms. 2. Be sure you are well balanced with sure footing. 3. Pull the mower back slowly, no more than half way toward you. 4. Repeat these steps as needed. Do not operate the mower while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Do not engage the self-propelled mechanism on machines so equipped while starting engine. 3
• The blade control handle is a safety device. Never attempt to bypass its operation. Doing so makes the safety device inopera- tive and may result in personal injury through contact with the rotating blade. The blade control handle must operate easily in both directions and automatically return to the disengaged position when released. • Never operate the mower in wet grass. Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. If you feel you are losing your footing, release the blade control handle immediately and the blade will stop rotating within three seconds. • Mow only in daylight or good artificial light. Walk, never run. • Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives, walks or roads. • If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally, stop the engine and check immediately for the cause. Vibration is gener- ally a warning of trouble. • Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes to a complete stop before removing the grass catcher or unclogging the chute. The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few seconds after the blade control is released. Never place any part of the body in the blade area until you are sure the blade has stopped rotating. • Never operate mower without proper trail shield, discharge cover, grass catcher, blade control handle or other safety protective de- vices in place and working. Never operate mower with damaged safety devices. Failure to do so can result in personal injury. Muffler and engine become hot and can cause a burn. Do not touch. • Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment while the engine is running. • Only use parts and accessories made for this machine by the manufacturer. Failure to do so can result in personal injury. • When starting engine, pull cord slowly until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly. Rapid retraction of starter cord (kickback) will pull hand and arm toward engine faster than you can let go. Broken bones, fractures, bruises or sprains could result. • If situations occur which are not covered in this manual, use care and good judgement. Contact 1-800-659-5917 for information and assistance. SLOPE OPERATION Slopes are a major factor related to slip and fall accidents, which can result in severe injury. Operation on slopes requires extra caution. If you feel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it. For your safety, use the Slope Guide included as part of this manual to measure slopes before operating this machine on a sloped or hilly area. If the slope is greater than 15 degrees, do not mow it. Do: o Mow across the face d slopes; never up and down. Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes. • Watch for holes, ruts, rocks, hidden objects, or bumps which can cause you to slip or trip. Tall grass can hide obstacles. • Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. If you feel you are losing your balance, release the blade control handle immediately and the blade will stop rotating within three (3) seconds. Do Not: • Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches or embankments, you could lose your footing or balance. Do not mow slopes greater than 15 degrees as shown on the slope gauge. • Do not mow on wet grass. Unstable footing could cause slipping. CHILDREN Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the presence of children. Children are often attracted to the mower and the mowing activity. They do not understand the dangers. Never assume that children will remain where you last saw them. Keep children out of the mowing area and under watchful care of a responsible adult other than the operator. Be alert and turn mower off if a child enters the area. Before and while moving backwards, look behind and down for small children. Use extreme care when approaching blind corners, doorways, shrubs, trees, or other objects that may obscure your vision of a child who may run into the mower. Keep children away from hot or running engines. They can suffer burns from a hot muffler. Never allow children under 14 years of age to operate this machine. Children 14 and over should read and understand the instructions and safe operation practices in this manual and on the machine and be trained and supervised by an adult. SERVICE Safe Handling Of Gasoline: • To avoid personal injury or property damage use extreme care in handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive. Serious personal injury can occur when gasoline is spilled on yourself or your clothes, which can ignite. Wash your skin and change clothes immediately. • Use only an approved gasoline container. • Never fill containers inside a vehicle or on a truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner. Always place containers on the ground away from your vehicle before filling. • Remove gas-powered equipment from the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground. If this is not possible, then refuel such equipment on a trailer with a portable container, rather than from a gasoline dispenser nozzle. • Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the fuel tank or container opening at all times until fueling is complete. Do not use a nozzle lock-open device. 4
• Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other sources of ignition. • Never fuel machine indoors because flammable vapors will accumulate in the area. • Never remove gas cap or add fuel while engine is hot or running. Allow engine to cool at least two minutes before refueling. • Never over fill fuel tank. Fill tank to no more than 1 inch below bottom of filler neck to provide for fuel expansion. • Replace gasoline cap and tighten securely. • If gasoline is spilled, wipe it off the engine and equipment. Move machine to another area. Wait 5 minutes before starting engine. • Never store the machine or fuel container near an open flame, spark or pilot light as on a water heater, space heater, furnace, clothes dryer or other gas appliances. • To reduce fire hazard, keep machine free of grass, leaves, or other debris build-up. Clean up oil or fuel spillage and remove any fuel soaked debris. Allow machine to cool at least 5 minutes before storing. General Service: • Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas. • Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make certain the blade and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine to prevent unintended starting. Check the blade and engine mounting bolts at frequent intervals for proper tightness. Also, visually inspect blade for damage (e.g., bent, cracked, worn) Replace blade with the original equipment manufacture's (O.E.M.) blade only, listed in this manual. Use of parts which do not meet the original equipment specifications may lead to improper performance and compromise safety! • Mower blades are sharp and can cut. Wrap the blade or wear gloves, and use extra caution when servicing them. Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight to be sure the equipment is in safe working condition. Never tamper with safety devices. Check their proper operation regularly. After striking a foreign object, stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine. Thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage. Repair the damage before starting and operating the mower. Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment while the engine is running. • Grass catcher components, discharge cover, and trail shield are subject to wear and damage which could expose moving parts or allow objects to be thrown. For safety protection, frequently check components and replace immediately with original equipment manufacturer's (O.E.M.) parts only, listed in this manual. Use of parts which do not meet the original equipment specifications may lead to improper performance and compromise safety! Do not change the engine's governor setting or over-speed the engine. The governor controls the maximum safe operating speed of the engine. Check fuel line, tank, cap, and fittings frequently for cracks or leaks. Replace if necessary. Do not crank engine with spark plug removed. • Maintain or replace safety and instruction labels, as necessary. • Observe proper disposal laws and regulations. Improper disposal of fluids and materials can harm the environment. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this product has an Average UsefulLife of seven (7) years, or 140 hours of operation. At the end of the Average Useful Life have the machine inspected annually by a Sears or other qualified service dealer to ensure that all mechanical and safety systems are working properly and not worn excessively. Failure to do so can result in accidents, injuries or death. DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE To avoid serious injury or death, do not modify engine in any way. Tampering with the governor setting can lead to a runaway engine and cause it to operate at unsafe speeds. Never tamper with factory setting of engine governor. NOTICE REGARDING EMISSIONS Engines which are certified to comply with California and federal EPA emission regulations for SORE (Small Off Road Equipment) are certified to operate on regular unleaded gasoline, and may include the following emission control systems: Engine Modification (EM) and Three Way Catalyst (TWC) if so equipped. SPARK ARRESTOR This machine is equipped with an internal combustion engine and should not be used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brushcovered or grass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system is equipped with a spark arrester meeting applicable local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, it should be maintained in effective working order by the operator. In the State of California the above is required by law (Section 4442 of the California Public Resources Code). Other states may have similar laws. Federal laws apply on federal lands. A spark arrester for the muffler is available through your nearest Sears Parts and Repair Service Center.

IMPORTANT: This unit is shipped without gasoline or oil in the engine. Be certain to service engine with gasoline and oil as instructed in the Operation section before starting or running your machine. NOTE: Reference to right and left hand side of the Lawn Mower is observed from the operating position. OPENING CARTON 1. Cut each corner of the carton vertically from top to bottom. 2. Remove all loose parts. 3. Remove loose packing material. REMOVING UNIT FROM CARTON 1. Lift unit from the rear to detach it from underlying carton material and roll unit out of carton. 2. Check carton thoroughly for any other loose parts. LOOSE PARTS IN CARTON • Grass Catcher • Side Discharge Chute Engine Oil Operator's Manual/Handle Hardware ASSEMBLY Attaching The Handle 1. Remove any packing material which may be between upper and lower handles. a. Pull up and back on upper handle as shown in Figure 1. Make certain the lower handle is seated securely into the handle mounting brackets. See Figure 2. Do not crimp cables while lifting the handle up. b. Tighten star knobs to secure upper handle to lower handle. Make sure that each carriage bolt is seated properly in the handle. 2. Insert a carriage bolt found in the manual bag into the upper hole on the handle mounting bracket. Secure with one plastic wing nut, also included in the manual bag. 3. The rope guide is attached to the right side of the upper handle. See Figure 3. Loosen the wing nut which secures the rope guide. a. Hold blade control against upper handle. b. Pull starter rope out of the engine. Release blade control. c. Slip starter rope into rope guide. d. Tighten wing nut. 4. Insert post on cable tie into hole provided on the lower handle. Pull cable tie tight and trim excess. See Figure 4. Attaching the Grass Catcher 1. Follow steps below to assemble the grass catcher. Make certain bag is turned right side out before assembling (warning label will be on the outside). a. Place bag over frame so that its black plastic side is at the bottom. b. Slip plastic channel of grass bag over hooks on the frame. See Figure 5. All the plastic channels except center top of bag attach from outside of bag. c. Attach center top of bag from inside of bag. 2. Follow the steps below to attach the grass catcher: a. Lift rear discharge door. See Figure 6. b. Place grass catcher on the pivot rod. Let go of discharge door so that it rests on the grass catcher. Never operate mower unless the hooks on the grass catcher are firmly seated on the pivot rod and the rear discharge door rests firmly against top of the grass catcher. l Figure 4 Figure 3 f 11 Figure 5 Figure 6
Side Discharge Chute Your mower is shipped as a mulcher. To convert to side discharge, make sure grass catcher is off of the unit and rear discharge door is closed. 1. On the side of the mower, lift the mulching plug. See Figure 7. 2. Slide two hooks of side discharge chute under hinge pin on mulching plug assembly. Lower the mulching plug. NOTE: Do not remove side mulching plug at any time, even when you are not mulching. ADJUSTMENTS Cutting Height Each wheel has a height adjustment lever to change the cutting height of the mower. Refer to Figure 8. 1. Depress height adjustment lever towards wheel. 2. Slide lever to desired position for a change in cutting height 3. Release lever towards deck. f Figure 7 J IMPORTANT: All wheels must be placed in the same relative position. For rough or uneven lawns, move the height adjustment lever to a higher position. Depress and squeeze it against the upper handle to operate the unit. Release it to stop engine and blade. Cutting Height Adjustment Levers Figure 9 SIDE DISCHARGE CHUTE J Your mower is shipped as a mulcher. To discharge the grass clippings to the side instead, follow the instructions in the Assembly section to attach the side discharge chute. This blade control is a safety device. Never attempt to bypass its operations. DRIVE CONTROL The drive control is located on the underside of the upper handle and is used to engage the drive. Squeeze it against the upper handle to engage the drive; release it to slow down or stop mower from propel- ling. MULCH PLUG The mulch plug is used for mulching purposes. Instead of collecting the grass clippings in a grass catcher or using the side discharge chute, some mower models have the option of recirculating the clippings back to the lawn. This is called mulching. RECOIL STARTER The recoil starter is attached to the right upper handle. Stand behind the unit and pull the recoil starter rope to start the unit. Keep hands and feet away from the chute area on cutting deck. Refer to warning label on the unit. CUTTING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT LEVERS One adjustment lever is located on each wheel and is used to adjust the cutting height. All four levers have to be at the same relative position to ensure a uniform cut. GAS CAP Remove the gas cap to add fuel to the fuel tank. Use clean, fresh, regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 86 octane. OIL FILL CAP/DIPSTICK Refer to the Maintenance section for instructions on checking the oil. SPARK PLUG Refer to the Maintenance section for instructions on spark plug replacement. Meets ANSI Safety Standards Craftsman Lawn Mowers conform to the safety standard of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). 13
GAS AND OIL FILL-UP Oil (one bottle shipped with unit) First Time Use 1. Remove oil fill dipstick. 2. With the mower on level ground, fill the engine to the upper limit mark on the dipstick with the recommended oil. See Figure 10. 3. Replace oil fill dipstick and tighten. Subsequent Uses Use 4-stroke motor oil that meets or exceeds the requirements for API service category SJ or later. Always check the API service label on the oil container to be sure it includes the letters SJ or later. 0 20 40 60 80 IO0°F I I I I I I I -20 -10 0 10 20 30 40°C Ambient Temperature SAE 100 is recommended for general use. Other viscosities shown in the chart may be used when the average temperature in your area is within the indicated range. 1. Check the oil with the engine stopped and level. 2. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and wipe it clean. 3. Insert the oil filler cap/dipstick as far as it will go into the oil filler neck, but do not screw it in, then remove it to check the oil level. See Figure 10. 4. If the oil level is near or below the lower limit mark on the dipstick, remove the oil filler cap/dipstick, and fill with the recommended oil to the upper limit mark. Do not overfill. 5. Reinstall the oil fillercap/dipstick. Gasoline This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline with a pump octane rating of 86 or higher. Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine stopped. If the engine has been running, allow it to cool first. Never refuel the engine inside a building where gasoline fumes may reach flames or sparks. You may use regular unleaded gasoline containing no more than 10% ethanol (El0) or 5% methanol by volume. In addition, methanol must contain cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors. Use of fuels with content of ethanol or methanol greater than shown above may cause starting and/or performance problems. It may also damage metal, rubber, and plastic parts of the fuel system. Engine damage or performance problems that result from using a fuel with percentages of ethanol or methanol greater than shown above are not overed by warranty. f Oil Fill Cap/ Dipst J Figure 10 Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive, and you can be burned or seriously injured when refueling. Stop engine and keep heat, sparks, and flame away. Refuel only outdoors. Wipe up spills immediately. If your equipment will be used on an infrequent or intermittent basis, please refer to the Off Season Storage section for additional informa- tion regarding fuel deterioration. NOTE: Fuel can damage paint and some types of plastic. Be careful not to spill fuel when filling your fuel tank. Never use stale or contaminated gasoline or oil/gasoline mixture. Avoid getting dirt or water in the fuel tank. 1. Remove the fuel tank cap. 2. Add fuel to the bottom of the fuel level limit in the neck of the fuel tank. Do not overfill. Wipe up spilled fuel before starting the engine. 3. Install the fuel tank cap and tighten it until it clicks. 4. Move at least 10 feet away from the fueling source and site before starting the engine. Be sure no one other than the operator is standing near the lawn mower while starting engine or operating mower. Never run engine indoors or in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas. Keep hands, feet, hair and loose clothing away from any moving parts on engine and lawn mower. 14
TO START ENGINE 1. Place the fuel valve lever (1) found on the left side of the engine into the ON (OPEN) position. See Figure 11. 2. Move the choke lever (2) all the way backward into the choke position. 3. Standing behind the mower, squeeze the blade control (3) against upper handle. The choke will now begin to slowly return to the off choke position. Therefore, quickly move onto step four below. 4. Holding blade control and upper handle together firmly, grasp recoil starter handle (4) and pull rope out with a rapid, continuous, full arm stroke. See Figure 11. Keeping a firm grip on the starter handle let the rope rewind slowly. Repeat until engine cranks. Let the rope rewind each time slowly. TO STOP ENGINE 1. Release blade control to stop the engine and blade. 2. Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position. Wait for the blade to stop completely before performing any work on the mower or to remove the grass catcher. USING YOUR LAWN MOWER Be sure lawn is clear of stones, sticks, wire, or other objects which could damage lawn mower or engine. Such objects could be accidently thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator and others. 1. Once the engine is running, squeeze the drive control against the upper handle to propel mower. Release it to disengage the drive. The operation of any lawn mower can result in foreign objects being thrown into the eyes, which can damage your eyes severely. Always wear safety glasses while operating the mower, or while performing any adjustments or repairs on it. USING AS MULCHER For mulching grass, remove the grass catcher and side discharge chute from the mower. For effective mulching, do not cut wet grass. If the grass has been allowed to grow in excess of four inches, mulching is not recommended. Use the grass catcher to bag clippings instead. Figure 11 USING GRASS CATCHER You can use the grass catcher to collect clippings while you are operating the mower. 1. Attach grass catcher following instructions in the "Assembly" section. Grass clippings will automatically collect in bag as you run mower. Operate mower till grass bag is full. 2. Stop engine completely by releasing the blade control. Make sure that the unit has come to a complete stop. 3. Lift discharge door and pull grass bag up and away from the mower to remove the bag. Dispose of the grass clippings and reinstall the bag when complete. If you strike a foreign object, stop the engine. Remove wire from the spark plug, thoroughly inspect mower for any damage, and repair damage before restarting and operating. Extensive vibration of mower during operation is an indication of damage. The unit should be promptly inspected and repaired. 15
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE Before performing any type of maintenance/service, disengage all controls and stop the engine. Wait until all moving parts have come to a complete stop. Disconnect spark plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent unintended starting. Follow the maintenance schedule given below. This chart describes service guidelines only. Always stop engine, disconnect spark plug wire, and ground against engine before performing any type of maintenance on your machine. GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS • Always observe safety rules when performing any maintenance. • The warranty on this lawn mower does not cover items that have been subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receive full value from warranty, operator must maintain the equipment as instructed here. • Changing of engine-governed speed will void engine warranty. • All adjustments should be checked at least once each season. • Periodically check all fasteners and make sure these are tight. ENGINE MAINTENANCE Spark Plug NOTE: incorrect spark plugs can cause engine damage. f Electrode Sealing Washer 0.028-.030 in. Gap (0.70-0.80mm) Figure 12 For good performance, the spark plug must be properly gapped and free of deposits. Check the spark plug every 50 hours or once a season. Replace the spark plug every 200 hours of operation. 1. Disconnect the cap from the spark plug, and remove any dirt from the spark plug area. 2. Use the proper size spark plug wrench to remove the spark plug. 3. inspect the spark plug. Replace it if damaged, badly fouled, if the sealing washer is in poor condition, or if the electrode is worn. 4. Measure the electrode gap with a suitable gauge. The correct gap is 0.028- 0.030 in. (0.70- 0.80 ram). See Figure 12. If adjustment is needed, correct the gap by carefully bending the side electrode. 5. install the spark plug carefully, by hand, to avoid cross-threading. 6. After the spark plug is seated, tighten with the proper size spark plug wrench to compress the washer. When installing a new spark plug, tighten 1/2 turn after the spark plug seats to compress the washer. When reinstalling the original spark plug, tighten 1/8-1/4 turn after the spark plug seats to compress the washer. NOTE: Properly tighten the spark plug. A loose spark plug can become very hot and can damage the engine. Overtightening the spark plug can damage the threads in the cylinder head. 7. Attach the spark plug cap to the spark plug. Air Cleaner A dirty air cleaner will restrict air flow to the carburetor and cause poor engine performance, inspect the filter each time the engine is oper- ated. You will need to clean the filter more frequently if you operate the engine in very dusty areas. Clean the air cleaner every 25 hours of operation or once a season. Replace the air cleaner every 200 hours of operation. NOTE: Operating the engine without a filter, or with damaged filter, will allow dirt to enter the engine, causing rapid engine wear. Inspection 1. Press the latch tabs on the top of the air cleaner cover, and remove the cover. Check the filter to be sure it is clean and in good condition. See Figure 13. 2. Reinstall the filter and air cleaner cover. Cleaning 1. Tap the filter several times on a hard surface to remove dirt, or blow compressed air not exceeding 30 psi through the filter from the clean side that faces the engine. Never try to brush off dirt. Brushing will force dirt into the fibers. 2. Wipe dirt from the air cleaner body and cover using a moist rag. Be careful to prevent dirt from entering the air duct that leads to the carburetor. 17
Check Engine Oil Check oil level before each operation. Be sure oil level is maintained. 1. Check the oil with the engine stopped and level. 2. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and wipe it clean. 3. Insert the oil filler cap/dipstick into the oil filler neck as far as it will go, but do not screw it in, then remove it to check the oil level. 4. If the oil level is near or below the lower limit mark on the dipstick, remove the oil filler cap/dipstick, and fill with the recommended oil to the upper limit mark. Do not overfill. 5. Reinstall the oil fillercap/dipstick. Change Engine Oil Change engine oil after the first month or five hours of operation, and every fifty hours or once a season thereafter. Drain the engine oil when the engine is warm. Warm oil drains quickly and completely. 1. Turn the fuel valve (Fig. 11) to the OFF position to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage. 2. Place a suitable container next to the engine to catch the used oil. 3. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick and drain the oil into the container by tipping the engine toward the oil filler neck. See Figure 14. Used oil is a hazardous waste product. Dispose of used oil properly. IDo not discard with household waste. Check with your local authori- _ties or Sears Service Center for safe disposal/recycling facilities. 4. With the engine in a level position, fill to the upper limit mark on the dipstick with the recommended oil. NOTE: Running the engine with a low oil level can cause engine damage. 5. Reinstall the oil filler cap/dipstick securely. Clean Engine • Daily or before every use, clean grass, chaff or accumulated debris from engine. Keep linkage, spring, and controls clean. Keep area around and behind muffler free of any combustible debris. • Keeping engine clean allows air movement around engine. • Engine parts should be kept clean to reduce the risk of overheat- ing and ignition of accumulated debris. Do not use water to clean engine parts. Water could contaminate fuel system. Use a brush or dry cloth. Oil Fill/Dipstic Air Cleaner Figure 14 f Figure 15 LUBRICATION Blade and Drive Control Lubricate pivot points on the blade and drive control at least once a season with light oil. These controls must operate freely in both directions. See Figure 15. Wheels Lubricate the wheels at least once a season with light oil (or motor oil). If wheels are removed for any reason, lubricate surface of the pivot arm and inner surface of the wheel with light oil. See Figure 15. Rear Discharge Door/Side Mulch Plug Lubricate the torsion spring and pivot points on the rear discharge door and side mulch plug periodically with light oil to prevent rust. See Figure 15. Transmission The transmission is pre-lubricated and sealed at the factory and does not require lubrication. 18
CLEANING DECK Clean underside of the mower deck once a season to prevent build-up of grass clippings or other debris. Follow steps below for this job. 1. Disconnect spark plug wire. Drain gasoline from lawn mower or place a piece of plastic under the gas cap. 2. Tip mower so that it rests on the housing, keeping the muffler side down. Hold mower firmly. Never tip the mower more than 900 in any direction and do not leave the mower tipped for any length of time. Oil can drain into the upper part of the engine causing a starting problem. 3. Scrape and clean the underside of the deck with a suitable tool. Do not spray with water. IMPORTANT: Do not use a pressure washer or garden hose to clean your unit. These may cause damage to bearings, or the engine. The use of water will result in shortened life and reduce serviceability. 4. Put the mower back on its wheels on the ground. If you had put plastic under the gas cap earlier, make sure to remove it now. REPLACING REAR FLAP To replace rear flap, proceed as follows: 1. Lift rear door, and press flap in on either side to remove from hole. See Figure 16. 2. Remove flap from opposite hole and replace with new flap in the opposite order and manner of removal. When removing the cutting blade for sharpening or replacement, protect your hands with a pair of heavy gloves or use a heavy rag to hold the blade. BLADE CARE Periodically inspect the blade adapter for cracks, especially if you strike a foreign object. Replace when necessary. Follow the steps below for blade service. 1. Disconnect spark plug boot from spark plug. Turn mower on its side making sure that the air filter and the carburetor are facing up. 2. Remove the bolt and the blade bell support which hold the blade and the blade adapter to the engine crankshaft. See Figure 17. 3. Remove blade and adapter from the crankshaft. NOTE: When removing these items, the wave washer may also break free from the crankshaft. Be sure to make note of the orientation of this item for reassembly. 4. Remove blade from the adapter for testing balance. Balance the blade on a round shaft screwdriver to check. Remove metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly. When sharpening the blade, follow the original angle of grind. Grind each cutting edge equally to keep the blade balanced. Figure 16 J Support Bolt ................................ Lubricate the engine crankshaft and the inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil. Slide the blade adapter onto the engine crankshaft. Place the blade on the adapter such that the side of the blade marked "Bottom" (or with part number) faces the ground when the mower is in the operating position. Make sure that the blade is aligned and seated on the blade adapter flanges. 19
6. Place blade bell support on the blade. Align notches on the blade bell support with small holes in blade. 7. Replace hex bolt and tighten hex bolt to torque: 450 in. Ibs. rain., 600 in. Ibs. max. To ensure safe operation of your mower, periodically check the blade bolt for correct torque. BELT CARE 1. Remove two shoulder screws securing front drive cover to mower deck. See Figure 18. Press inward on sides of front drive cover and release tabs that secure it to the height adjuster brackets. Remove drive cover from mower. 2. Loosen screw holding belt tension spring to transmission. See Figure 18 inset. Do not remove screw completely. As you loosen it, tension on the belt will be released. 3. Tip mower on its side with the air filter up to access belt from underside of mower and remove blade as described in the previous section. Refer to Figure 17. 4. Press inward on tab on the engine baffle to release it from the baffle bracket. See Figure 19. 5. Slide belt off of engine pulley and thread through the opening in the deck. See Figure 20. J Figure 19 NOTE: When removing belt, the wave washer may also break free from the crankshaft. Be sure to make note of the orientation of this item for reassembly. 6. Replace with new belt, making sure belt is firmly seated on engine pulley while pulling from the other side and sliding it around the transmission pulley. 7. Reattach engine baffle and reassemble blade as described in the previous section. . . Figure 20 Turn mower back over and make sure belt is seated on the transmission pulley. Never store lawn mower with fuel in tank indoors or in poorly ventilated areas where fuel fumes may reach an open flame, spark, or pilot light as on a furnace, water heater, clothes dryer, or gas appliance. PREPARING THE ENGINE Fuel in tank can become stale when equipment is stored over 30 days. Stale fuel causes acid and gum deposits to form in fuel system or on essential carburetor parts. To Prevent Fuel-Related Problems: 1. Add gasoline stabilizer following the manufacturer's instructions. When adding a gasoline stabilizer, fill the fuel tank with fresh gasoline. If only partially filled, air in the tank will promote fuel deterioration during storage. If you keep a container of gasoline for refueling, be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline. 2. After adding a gasoline stabilizer, run the engine outdoors for 10 minutes to be sure that treated gasoline has replaced the untreated gasoline in the carburetor. 3. Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position. 4. Continue to run the engine until it stops from the lack of fuel in the carburetor fuel bowl. Running time should be less than 3 minutes. PREPARING THE LAWN MOWER • Clean and lubricate mower thoroughly as described in the lubrica- tion instructions. • Do not use a pressure washer or garden hose to clean your unit. • Coat mower's cutting blade with chassis grease to prevent rusting. • Refer to PREPARING THE ENGINE for correct engine storage instructions. • Store mower in a dry, clean area. Do not store next to corrosive materials, such as fertilizer. When storing any type of power equipment in a poorly ventilated or metal storage shed, care should be taken to rust-proof the equipment. Using a light oil or silicone, coat the equipment, especially cables and all moving parts of your lawn mower before storage. IMPORTANT: if fuel stabilizer is not used, you need to drain gasoline from equipment prior to storage. Run engine until it stops from a lack of fuel. Perform the following before long-term storage of equipment: 1. While engine is still warm, change oil. 2. Remove spark plug and pour approximately 1/2 oz. (15 ml) of new engine oil into spark plug cavity which puts oil into cylinder. Replace spark plug securely. 3. Pull starter rope slowly. This turns the engine's crankshaft and distributes oil through the engine. 4. Add fuel stabilizer or drain fuel from engine. 5. Clean dirt and debris from top and all areas around engine. 6. Store in a clean, dry area. 21

Elsewhere in the United States, new non-road, spark-ignition engines certified for model year 1997 and later must meet similar standards set forth by the U.S. EPA. Sears must warrant the emission control system on your YEAR 1997 AND LATER ENGINES WHICH ARE PURCHASED AND USED ELSEWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES (AND AFTER JANUARY 1,2001 IN CANADA). Control Defects Warranty Statement engine for the periods of time listed below, provided there has been no abuse, neglect or improper maintenance of your small off-road engine.Your emis- sion control system includes parts such as the carburetor, air cleaner, ignition system, muffler and catalytic converter. Also included may be connectors and other emission related assemblies. Where a warrantable condition exists, Sears will repair your small off-road engine at no cost to you including diagnosis, parts and labor. Sears Emission Control Defects Warranty Coverage Small off-road engines are warranted relative to emission control parts defects for a period of one year, subject to provisions set forth below. If any covered Owner's Warranty As the small off-road engine owner, you are responsible for the performance of the required maintenance listed in your Operating and Maintenance Instruc- tions. Sears recommends that you retain all your receipts covering maintenance on your small off-road engine, but Sears cannot deny warranty solely for the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure the performance of all scheduled maintenance. As the small off-road engine owner, you should however be aware that Sears may deny you warranty coverage if your small off-road engine or a part has failed due to abuse, neglect, improper maintenance or unap- part on your engine is defective, the part will be repaired or replaced by Sears. Responsibilities proved modifications.You are responsible for presenting your small off-road engine to an Authorized Sears Service Dealer as soon as a problem exists. The undisputed warranty repairs should be completed in a reasonable amount of time, not to exceed 30 days. Sears Emission Control Defects Warranty Provisions The following are specific provisions relative to your Emission Control Defects Warranty Coverage. No Charge Repair or replacement of any Warranted Part will be performed at no charge to the owner, including diagnostic labor which leads to the determination that a Warranted Part is defective, if the diagnostic work is performed at an Authorized Sears Service Dealer. For emissions warranty service contact your nearest Authorized Sears Service Dealer as listed in the "Yellow Pages" under "Engines, Gasoline," "Gasoline Engines," "Lawn Mowers," or similar category. 4. Claims and Coverage Exclusions Warranty claims shall be filed in accordance with the provisions of the Sears Engine Warranty Policy. Warranty coverage shall be excluded for failures of Warranted Parts which are not original Sears parts or because of abuse, neglect or improper maintenance as set forth in the Sears Engine Warranty Policy. Sears is not liable to cover failures of Warranted Parts caused by the use of add-on, non-original, or modified parts. 5. Maintenance Any Warranted Part which is not scheduled for replacement as required maintenance or which is scheduled only for regular inspection to the effect of "repair or replace as necessary" shall be warranted as to defects for the warranty period. Any Warranted Part which is scheduled for replacement as required maintenance shall be warranted as to defects only for the period of time up to the first scheduled replacement for that part. Any replacement part that is equivalent in performance and durability may be used in the performance of any maintenance or repairs. Look For Relevant Emissions Durability Period and Air index information On Your Engine Emissions Label Engines that are certified to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Tier 2 Emission Standards must display information regarding the Emissions Durability Period and the Air Index. Sears, Roebuck and Co., U.S.A. makes this information available to the consumer on our emission labels. The Emissions Durability Period describes the number of hours of actual running time for which the engine is certified to be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenance in accordance with the Operating & Mainte- nance Instructions. The following categories are used: Moderate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 125 hours of actual engine running time. Intermediate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 250 hours of actual engine running time. Extended: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 500 hours of actual engine running time. For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to 25 hours per year. Therefore, the Emissions Durability Period of an engine with an intermediate rating would equate to 10 to 12 years. The Air Index is a calculated number describing the relative level of emissions for a specific engine family. The lower the Air Index, the cleaner the engine. This information is displayed in graphical form on the emissions label. After July 1,2000, Look For Emissions Compliance Period On Engine Emissions Compliance Label After July 1, 2000 certain Sears, Roebuck and Co., U.S.A. engines will be certified to meet the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Phase 2 emission standards. For Phase 2 certified engines, the Emis- sions Compliance Period referred to on the Emissions Compliance label indicates the number of operating hours for which the engine has been shown to meet Federal emission requirements. La vibraci6n por Io general es una advertencia de algQn problerna. • Apague el motor y espere hasta que la cuchilla se detenga cornpletarnente antes de retirar la guarda para el recorte de cesped o desatorar la tolva. La cuchilla continOa girando por unos cuantos segundos despu_s que el motor se ha apagado. Nunca coloque ninguna parte del cuerpo en el _.rea de la cuchilla hasta que est_ seguro que la cuchilla ha detenido su rnovirniento rotatorio. Nunca opere la cortadora sin las guardas apropiadas, cubierta de descarga, guarda para recorte, rnanija de control de la cuchilla y otros dispositivos de seguridad y protecci6n en su lugar y funcionando. Nunca opere la cortadora si los dispositivos de seguridad est_.n da_ados. Si no Io hace, esto puede tenet corno resultado lesiones. • El silenciador y el motor se calientan y pueden producir querna- duras. No los toque. • Utilice solarnente partes y accesorios fabricados especialrnente para esta rn_.quina, originales del fabricante (OEM). Para seguridad, use el rnedidor de pendientes que se incluye corno parte de este manual para rnedir la pendiente antes de operar la unidad en una zona inclinada. Si la pendiente supera los 15 grados, no la pode. Haga Io siguiente: • Mueva la podadora a traves de las caras de la pendiente, nunca hacia arriba y abajo. Tenga cuidado cuando carnbie de direcci6n cuando opere la rn_.quina en pendientes. • Est_ atento a los agujeros, raices, rocas, objetos ocultos o abultarnientos que puedan provocar que se derrape o se tropiece. Tenga extrerna precauci6n cuando se aproxirne a esquinas ciegas, entradas de puertas, _.rboles u otros objetos que puedan obstaculizarle la vista de un ni_o que pudiese correr hacia la podadora. Mantenga alejados a los ni_os de los rnotores en rnarcha o calientes. Pueden sufrir quernaduras con un silenciador caliente. Nunca perrnita que ni_os rnenores de 14 a_os operen esta rn_.quina. Los ni_os rnayores de 14 a_os deben leer y entender las instrucciones de operaci6n y reglas de seguridad contenidas en este manual y deben ser entrenados y supervisados por sus padres. SERVIClO Manejo seguro de la gasolina: • Para evitar lesiones personales o daSos rnateriales sea surnarnente cuidadoso al rnanipular la gasolina. La gasolina es altarnente inflarnable y los vapores son explosivos. Se puede lesionar gravernente si derrarna gasolina sobre usted o sobre la ropa ya que se puede encender. • Utilice s61o recipientes para gasolina autorizados. • Nunca Ilene los contenedores en el interior de un vehiculo o carni6n o caja de carnioneta con recubrirnientos pl_.sticos. Coloque siernpre los recipientes en el piso y lejos del vehiculo antes de Ilenarlos. • Retire el equipo a gasolina del carni6n o rernolque y II_nelo en el piso. Si esto no es posible, entonces Ilene dicho equipo en un rernolque con un recipiente port_.til, en vez de desde un dispen- sador de gasolina. • Mantenga la boquilla de Ilenado en contacto con el horde de la entrada del tanque de gasolina o contenedor en todo rnornento hasta que est_ Ileno. Funcionamiento generah • Nunca encienda un motor en espacios cerrados o en una zona con poca ventilaci6n. Canal de Descarga Lateral Su podadora ha side enviada come abonadora. Si hace ia conversi6n a descarga lateral, asegQrese de que el colector de cesped este fuera de la unidad y que ia puerta de descarga trasera este cerrada. 1. En el costado de la podadora, levante el adaptador para abono. Vea la Figura 7. 2. Deslice los dos ganchos del canal de descarga lateral debajo del pasador de bisagra sobre el montaje del adaptador para abono. Baje el adaptador para abono. NOTA: No extraiga la clavija para abono lateral en cualquier momento, aQn cuando no este abonando. AJUSTES Ajuste de la altura de corte Una placa de ajuste y una palanca en cada rueda proporcionan el ajuste de la altura de corte. Vea la Figura 8. 1. Presione la palanca hacia la rueda. 2. Mu_vala a cualquier de las posiciones para la altura de corte deseado. 3. Libere la palanca hacia la cubierta de la podadora. IMPORTANTE: Todas las ruedas deben set colocadas en la misma posici6n relativa. Cuando ei terreno es agreste o irregular cambie ia palanca de ajuste de la aitura a una posici6n ma.s alta. Presione la manija de control de la cuchilla contra la manija superior para operar la unidad. Suelte la manija de control de la cuchilla para detener el motor y la cuchilla. El control de ia cuchiiia es un dispositivo de seguridad. Nunca intente anular su funcionamiento. CONTROL DE LA TRANSMISI6N El control de transmisi6n se encuentra en la parte oculta de la manija superior y se utiiiza para enganchar ia transmisi6n. Aprietelo contra ia manija superior para enganchar la transmisi6n, liberelo para disminuir la velocidad o detener ia podadora. CLAVIJA PARA ABONO El adaptador para abono se utiiiza Qnicamente para prop6sitos de abono. En vez de recolectar los recortes del cesped en un colector de cesped o canal de descarga lateral, aigunos modelos de podadora tienen la opci6n de recircular los recortes en el cesped. Esto se llama abonar. PALANCA DE AJUSTE DE LA ALTURA DE CORTE Estas paiancas esta.n ubicadas una en cada rueda y se usan para corregir la altura de corte. Las cuatro palancas tienen que estar en la misma posici6n relativa para asegurar un corte uniforme. CANAL DE DESCARGA LATERAL Su cortacesped es transportado como un mulcher. Para descargar los recortes de peri6dico de hierba ai lado en cambio, siga ias instrucciones en la secci6n de Montaje para atar el canal de descarga lateral. Mantenga sus manos y pies alejados del area del canal de la plataforma de corte. Consulte la etiqueta de advertencias en la unidad. ARRANCADOR DE RETROCESO El arrancador de retroceso esta. unido a la manija superior derecha. Para encender la unidad col6quese detra.s de la misma y tire de la cuerda del arrancador de retroceso. TAPON DE GASOLINA Retire el tap6n de gasolina para agregar combustible ai tanque de combustible. Use gasolina limpia, nueva, regular, sin plomo con un octanaje mfnimo de 86. TAPON DE ACEITE/VARILLA DE MEDICI6N DEL NIVEL DE ACEITE Consulte ia secci6n Mantenimiento para obtener instrucciones sobre c6mo verificar el aceite. BUJiA DE ENCENDIDO Consulte la secci6n Mantenimiento para obtener instrucciones sobre el cambio de bujfas. LLENADO DE GASOUNA Y ACEITE Aceite (se envia una botella junto con la unidad) Primer uso 1. Saque la varilla del nivel de aceite. 2. Con ia cortadora de cesped ubicada en suelo nivelado, iiene hasta la marca de iimite alto en ia variila medidora del nivel de aceite con el aceite recomendado. Vea la Figura 10. 3. Vuelva a colocar la varilla de Ilenado de aceite y ajQstela. Usos posteriores Use aceite para motor de 4 tiempos que cumpla o sobrepase los requisitos para ia clasificaci6n de servicio API SJ o equivaiente. Inserte ia tapa dei dep6sito de aceite/variiia medidora dei nivei de aceite en el tubo de ilenado de este como se muestra, pero no ia atornille, luego quitela para revisar el nivel de aceite. Vea la Figura 10. 4. Si el nivel de aceite esta. cerca o pot debajo de la marca de limite bajo de la varilla medidora del nivel de aceite, quite la tapa del dep6sito de aceite/varilia medidora dei nivei de aceite y ilenelo con el aceite recomendado hasta la marca de limite superior. No Ilene de ma.s. 5. Vueiva a instalar la tapa/varilla medidora del nivel de aceite. Gasolina Este motor est_ homologado para utilizar gasolina sin plomo con un octanaje de 86 o superior. Eche gasolina en un a.rea bien ventiiada y con ei motor parado. Si el motor ha estado funcionando, deje que se enfrie primero. No eche gasolina a la ma.quina en ei interior de un edificio donde los vapores de la gasolina puedan estar expuestos a aiguna llama o chispa. Puede usar gasolina ordinaria sin plomo que no contenga m_s del 10% de etanol (El0) o del 5% de metanol pot volumen. Asimismo, el metanol debe contener cosolventes e inhibidores de corrosi6n. El uso de combustibles con un contenido de metanol superior al f Nivel de aceite _Lfmite superior Limite bajo Figura 10 mostrado anteriormente puede ocasionar problemas de arranque o de funcionamiento. Tambi_n puede daSar las piezas de metal, goma y plastico del sistema de combustible. El daSo al motor o los problemas de funcionamiento que resulten del uso de un combustible con porcentajes de etanol o metanol superiores a los mostrados anteriormente no est_n cubiertos por la garanfia. Siva a usar ei equipo de forma intermitente o s61o ocasionalmente, consulte ia secci6n de Aimacenamiento Fuera de Temporada para obtener ma.s informaci6n sobre el deterioro del combustible. La gasolina es aitamente inflamable y explosiva y usted puede quemars_ o iesionarse gravemente ai reabastecer. Pare el motor y mantenga iejos el calor, las chispas y las llamas. Reabastezca s61o ai aire libre. Limpie inmediatamente los derrames. NOTA: El combustible puede daSar la pintura y algunos tipos de plastico. Tenga cuidado de no derramar combustible cuando Ilena el tanque. No use nunca gasolina rancia o contaminada ni mezclas de aceite y gaso- lina. No permita que entre suciedad o agua en el tanque de combustible. 1. Quite ia tapa dei tanque de combustible. 2. Agregue combustible hasta ia parte inferior del iimite de nivel de combustible en ei tubo del tanque. No iiene de ma.s. Limpie el combustible derramado antes de arrancar el motor. 3. Aprieteeltap6n firmemente. 4. Antes de arrancar el motor, aiejese al menos 3 metros del emplazamiento y la fuente de la gasolina. AsegQrese de que ninguna persona aparte dei operador permanezca cerca de ia cortadora mientras arranca el motor u opera la misma. Nunca encienda el motor en espacios cerrados o en una zona con poca ventilaci6n. El escape del motor contiene mon6xido de carbono, un gas inodoro y ietai. Mantenga ias manos, los pies, el cabello y la ropa suelta alejados de las partes m6viles del motor y de la cortadora. 54
PARA ENCENDER EL MOTOR 1. Coloque la palanca de la va.lvula de combustible (1) en el lado izquierdo del motor en ia posicidn de ON. Vea la Figura 11. 2. Mueva la palanca de esta.rter (2) en todo hacia atra.s en la posici6n de esta.rter. 3. Col6quese detra.s de la podadora, apriete la manija de control de la cuchilla (3) y sostengala contra la manija superior. El obturador ahora comenzara, a regresar ientamente a ia posici6n de obturador OFF despues de activar ei control de ia cuchiiia. Pot Io tanto, ra.pidamente avance ai paso cuatro siguiente. 4. Sostenga firmemente las dos manijas juntas, tome la manija del arrancador de retroceso (4) y tire de la cuerda para sacarla con un movimiento del brazo ra.pido, continuo y total. Vea la Figura 11. Mantenga firme la manija del arrancador, deje que la cuerda regrese lentamente ai arrancador. Repita hasta que el motor este en marcha. Deje que la cuerda se vuelva a enrollar lentamente. PARA DETENER EL MOTOR 1. Suelte la manija de control de la cuchilla para detener el motor y la cuchilla. 2. Gire la va.ivula de combustible a la posici6n OFE Espere a que ia cuchilla se haya detenido pot completo antes de hacer cualquier trabajo en la cortadora o de retirar el colector de cesped. USO DE LA CORTADORA DE ClaSPED Aseg_rese de que el cesped esta. libre de piedras, palos, cables u otros objetos que pudiesen dafiar la cortadora o el motor. Dichos objetos pueden set arrojados accidentalmente pot la cortadora en cualquier direcci6n y provocar iesiones personales graves ai operador y a otras personas. 1. Una vez que el motor est6 funcionando, apriete el control de transmisi6n contra la manija superior para propulsar la podadora. AI operar una cortadora de cesped es posible que objetos extrafios sean arrojados a los ojos, Io cual puede dafiarlos gravemente. Utilice siempre galas de seguridad durante la operaci6n de la cortadora de cesped o mientras la ajusta o repara. USO COIVIO ABONADORA Para abonar el cesped, quite el colector de cesped de la ma.quina. La puerta de descarga posterior debera estar cerrada. Para un abono eficiente, no corte cesped hQmedo. Si el cesped ha crecido ma.s de 10,2 cm. (4 pulg.) no se recomienda el uso de la podadora como abonadora. En ese caso, use el colector de cesped para embolsar los recortes. Figura 11 USO DEL COLECTOR DE ClaSPED Puede utilizar el colector de cesped para recoger dichos recortes mientras opera la podadora. 1. Acople el colector de cesped siguiendo las instrucciones en la secci6n de Montaje. Los recortes de cesped se recolectara.n automa.ticamente en la bolsa a medida que pase ia podadora. Opere la podadora hasta que ia bolsa de recolecci6n este Ilena. 2. Detenga ei motor pot completo soltando la manija de control de la cuchilla. Compruebe que la unidad se haya detenido por completo. 3. Para deshacerse de los recortes de cesped ievante ia puerta de descarga y tire de la bolsa de recolecci6n hacia arriba, aparta.ndola de la podadora. Si golpea un objeto extrafio, detenga ei motor. Retire el cable de ia bujia, inspeccione detenidamente la cortadora para vet que no tenga dafios, y repare el dafio antes de volver a encender y operar. El exceso de vibraci6n de la cortadora durante la operaci6n es una indicaci6n de dafio. Se debe inspeccionar y reparar la unidad Io antes posible. 55

RECONIENDACIONES GENERALES • Respete siempre las reglas de seguridad cuando realice tareas de mantenimiento. • La garanfia de esta cortadora no cubre elementos que han estado sujetos al mal uso o la negligencia del operador. Para recibir el reembolso total de la garantia, ei operador deberfi dar mantenimiento ai equipo tai y como se indica en este manual. • El cambio de la velocidad controlada del motor invalidarfi la garantia dei motor. • Todos los ajustes deben ser verificados pot Io menos una vez en cada estaci6n. • Revise peri6dicamente todos los sujetadores y compruebe que esten bien ajustados. MANTENIMIENTO DEL MOTOR Bujia de encendido NOTA: Las bujias incorrectas pueden causar da_os en el motor. Para un buen funcionamiento, la bujia debe estar adecuadamente abierta y libre de dep6sitos. Cambie la bujia cada 50 horas o una vez por temporada. Reemplace la bujia cada 200 horas de funcionamiento. 1. Desconecte el capuch6n de la bujia y retire cualquier suciedad del firea de esta. 2. Use la Ilave de bujias del tama_o adecuado para extraerla. 3. Inspeccione la bujia. Reemplficela si estfi da_ada, muy sucia, si la abrazadera estfi en mai estado o si el electrodo estfi desgastado. 4. Mida ia separaci6n de las puntas del electrodo con un medidor adecuado. La separaci6n correcta es 0,028-0,030 in. (0,70 - 0,80 ram). Vea la Figura 12. Si es necesario un ajuste, corrija la sepa- raci6n doblando cuidadosamente el electrodo lateral. 5. Instale la bujia cuidadosamente, a mano, para evitar un mal enrosque. 6. Despues que ia vfiivula estfi asentada, aprietela con la Ilave de bujias del tama_o adecuado para comprimir la junta. Cuando instale una bujia nueva, apriete 1/2 giro despues que la bujia se asienta para comprimir la junta. Cuando vuelva a instalar la bujia original, apriete de 1/8 a 1/4 de giro despues que la bujia se asienta para comprimir la junta. NOTE: Apriete la bujia adecuadamente. Una bujia suelta puede calen- tarse demasiado y dahar el motor. El apriete excesivo de la bujia puede da_ar las roscas en la culata. 7. Coloque el capuch6n de la bujia. Filtro de aire Un filtro de aire sucio restringir& el fiujo de aire al carburador y causar& el funcionamiento defectuoso del motor. Inspeccione el filtro cada vez que opere el motor. Necesitar_. limpiar con m_.s frecuencia el filtro si usted opera el motor en fireas muy polvorientas. Limpio el filtro de aire cada 25 horas de la operaci6n o una vez por temporada. Inspeccione 1. Presione las leng_etas de enganche de la parte superior de la cubierta del fiitro de aire y quitela. Revise el fiitro para asegurarse que estfi limpio yen buen estado. Vea ia Figura 13. 2. Vuelva a instaiar el filtro de aire y su cubierta. Lirnpieza 1. Golpee ligeramente el filtro varias veces sobre una superficie dura para quitar la suciedad o sople aire comprimido que no sobrepase las 30 psi a tra%s dei fiitro desde el lado iimpio que enfrenta ai motor. Nunca intente quitar ia suciedad con una escobilla. El escobil- lado forzarfi la suciedad dentro de las fibras. 2. Limpie la suciedad del cuerpo y de ia cubierta del fiitro de aire usando una alfombrilla hQmeda. Tenga cuidado de evitar que la suciedad entre ai conducto de aire que Ileva ai carburador.
Comprobar el aceite del motor Comprobar el nivel de aceite antes de cada operaci6n. Aseg_rese de que el nivei de aceite se mantiene. 1. Revise el aceite con ei motor parade y nivelado. 2. Quite ia tapa del dep6sito de aceite/varilla medidora del nivel de aceite y limpiela. 3. Inserte ia tapa dei dep6sito de aceite/variiia medidora dei nivei de aceite en el tube de ilenado de este come se muestra, pero no la atornille, luego quiteia para revisar ei nivel de aceite. 4. Si el nivel de aceite esta. cerca o pot debajo de la marca de limite bajo de la varilla medidora del nivel de aceite, quite la tapa del dep6sito de aceite/varilia medidora dei nivei de aceite y ilenelo con el aceite recomendado hasta la marca de limite superior. No Ilene de ma.s. 5. Vueiva a instaiar la tapa/varilla medidora del nivel de aceite. Cambiar el aceite del motor Carnbie el aceite del motor despu6s de las prirneras cinco horas de operaci6n o el primer rnes, y cada cincuenta horas o una vez a la ternporada despu6s. Drene el aceite del motor cuando 6ste se encuentre caliente. El aceite caliente se drena r@ida y cornpJetarnente. 1. Gire la va.ivula de combustible (Fig. 11) a la posici6n CERRADA para disminuir ia posibilidad de perdida de combustible. 2. Coloque un recipiente adecuado cerca del motor para recoger el aceite usado. 3. Quite la tapa/varilla medidora del nivel de aceite y drene el aceite al recipiente inclinando el motor hacia el tube de Ilenado del aceite. Vea la Figura 14. El aceite usado es un residue peligroso. Elimine el aceite usado adecuadamente. No Io arroje junto con los residues domiciliarios. Consulte alas autoridades locales o al centre de servicio Sears para averiguar d6nde hay instalaciones para la eliminaci6n/reciclaje segura(o) del aceite usado. 4. Con ei motor en una posici6n nivelada, ilene hasta ia marca de limite are en la varilla medidora del nivel de aceite con el aceite recomendado. NOTE: Poner en marcha el motor con un nivel de aceite bajo puede causar da_os en el motor. 5. Vueiva a instaiar bien la tapa/varilla medidora del nivel de aceite. Limpie el motor Diariamente o antes de cada uso, limpie el cesped, ia grasa o los residuos acumulados dei motor. Mantenga limpios ei varillaje, los resortes y los controles. Mantenga el a.rea que rodea al silenciador y detra.s dei mismo iibre de cualquier residue combustible. El mantenimiento del motor en condiciones limpias permite el movimiento de aire alrededor del mismo. Las partes dei motor se @ben mantener limpias para reducir el riesgo de sobrecalentamiento y combusti6n de los residues acumulados. No use agua para limpiar ias piezas dei motor. El agua puede contaminar el sistema de combustible. Use un cepillo o un trapo seco. Estos controles debe funcionar iibremente en ambas direcciones,. Vea la Figura 15. Ruedas Lubrique ias ruedas per Io menos una vez per temporada con aceite ligero o aceite para motor. Sin embargo, si las ruedas se quitan per cuaiquier raz6n, debe lubricar ia superficie del braze giratorio y la superficie interna de la rueda con aceite ligero. Vea ia Figura 15. Puerta trasera de descarga/Clavija de abono Lubrique el resorte de torsi6n y ei punto de pivote de ia puerta trasera de descarga y clavija de abono lateral peri6dicamente con aceite ligero para prevenir ia oxidaci6n. Vea la Figura 15. Transmisi6n La transmisi6n es prelubricada y sellada en la fa.brica y no requiere lubricaci6n. 58
LIIVIPIEZA DE LA PLATAFORiVlA Debe limpiar la parte inferior de la plataforma de la cortadora de cesped una vez una temporada para prevenir la acumulaci6n de recortes de cesped u otros desechos. Siga los pasos que aparecen debajo para realizar esta tarea. 1. Desconecte el cable de la bujia. Drene la gasolina de la cortadora o coloque un trozo de pla.stico debajo del tap6n de Ilenado del combustible. 2. Incline la cortadora de cesped de modo que quede apoyada sobre al alojamiento, mantenga el silenciador de costado hacia abajo. Sostenga firmemente la cortadora. Nunca incline ia cortadora de cesped ma.s de 900 en ninguna direcci6n y no deje la unidad inclinada. Se puede filtrar aceite dentro de la parte superior del motor y causar problemas de arranque. 3. Raspe y iimpie ia parte inferior de la plataforma mediante el uso de una herramienta adecuada. No la rocie con agua. IMPORTANTE: No utilice una lavadora a presi6n o manguera de jardin para limpiar su unidad. Pueden producir daSos a los rodamientos o al motor. El use de agua acortara, la vida _til de la ma.quina y reducira, su capacidad de servicio. 4. Vuelva a colocar ia cortadora de cesped sobre sus ruedas en el suelo. Si puso un pla.stico debajo del tap6n de Ilenado de combustible asegQrese de sacarlo en este memento. CAIVIBIO DE LA ALETA TRASERA Para cambiar la aleta trasera, proceda de la siguiente manera: 1. Levante la puerta trasera, y la tapa de prensa en a ambos lades para quitar del agujero. Vea la Figura 16. 2. Quite la tapa del agujero de enfrente y sustituya per la nueva tapa en la orden de enfrente y ia manera del retire. CUIDADO DE LA CUCHILLA las manos usando un par de guantes para trabajo rudo o un trapo para sostener la cuchilla. Inspeccione peri6dicamente el adaptador de la cuchiiia en busca de rajaduras, especialmente cuando golpee un objeto extra_o. Realice los reemplazos que resulten necesarios. Siga los pasos que aparecen debajo para realizar ei mantenimiento de la cuchilla. 1. Desconecte el capuch6n del cable de la bujia. Gire la cortadora de cesped sobre el costado y compruebe que el filtro de aire y el carburador queden mirando hacia arriba. 2. Saque el perno y el soporte de campana de ia cuchiiia que sostienen la cuchilla y el adaptador de la misma ai cigQe_ai del motor. Vea la Figura 17. 3. Saque la cuchilla y el adaptador del cigQe_ai. NOTA: Quitando estos articulos, la arandela tambien pueden iiberarse de ei cigQe_ai. Este seguro para hacer la nota de la orientaci6n de este articulo para nueva sesi6n. Figura 17 4. Afiie cada horde de corte per igual para mantener el balance de la cuchilla. Si ia cuchiiia esta. desequiiibrada generara, vibraciones excesivas cuand 4 rote a aitas velocidades. 5. Lubrique el cigQehal del motor y la superficie interna del adaptador de ia cuchilla con aceite iigero. Deslice el adaptador de la cuchilla sobre el cigQe_ai del motor. Instale ia cuchiiia en ei adaptador con el lado marcado "Bottom" (inferior) (o con el numero de parte) hacia ei piso cuando ia cortadora de cesped esta. en posici6n de funcionamiento. AsegQrese que la cuchilla quede aiineada y asentada en ias bridas del adaptador. 6. Coloque el soporte de campana de la cuchilla en ia misma. Aiinee las muescas del soporte de campana de la cuchilla con los orificios peque_os de la cuchilla. 7. Vuelva a colocar el pemo hexagonal y ajQstelo segQn los siguientes valores de torsi6n: 450 Ib-pulg como minimo, 600 Ib-pulg como ma.ximo. Para garantizar ia operaci6n segura de la cortadora de cesped, revise peri6dicamente el perno de la cuchilla para determinar si esta. bien ajustado. CUIDADO DE LA CORREA 1. Extraiga dos los tornillos con reborde asegurando la cubierta frontal a la cubierta de la podadora. Vea la Figura 18. Presione hacia adentro sobre los laterales de la cubierta frontal y suelte ias aletas que la aseguran a las mensulas del ajustador de altura. Quite la cubierta de ia podadora. 2. Afloje el tomillo que sujeta el resorte de tensi6n de la correa a la transmisi6n. Vea la Figura 18 encarte. No saque completamente el tomillo. A medida que afloje el tornillo disminuira, la tensi6n de la correa. 3. Incline ia podadora sobre su iado con el fiitro de aire hacia arriba para liegar a ia correa desde la parte inferior de ia podadora y quite la cuchiiia como descrito en la secci6n anterior. Vea ia Figura 17. 4. Presione hacia dentro en ia etiqueta en la confusi6n de motor de liberarlo del soporte de confusi6n. Vea la Figura 19. 5. Deslice ia correa fuera de la polea dei motor y enrosque a traves de la apertura en la cubierta. Reemplace por una nueva correa, asegQrese de que la correa est,. firmemente asentada sobre la polea del motor mientras tira del otro lado y la desliza alrededor de la polea de transmisi6n. 7. Ate de nuevo la confusi6n de motor y vuelva a montar la I_.mina como descrito en la secci6n anterior. 8. Vuelque el cortacesped atr_.s y asegQrese que el cintur6n es asentado en la polea de transmisi6n. Apriete el tornillo aflojado antes para garantizar la tensi6n de la correa de transmisi6n a la primavera. 9. Reensamblelacubiertafrontal. 6O
Nunca almacene la cortadora de cesped con combustible en el tanque en un espacio cerrado o en fireas con poca ventilaci6n, donde los gases dei combustible puedan alcanzar el fuego, chispas o una luz piloto como ia que tienen algunos hornos, calentadores de agua, secadores de ropa o aigQn otto dispositivo a gas. PREPARACION DEL MOTOR El equipo almacenado con el combustible puede enranciarse cuando almacenado mils de 30 dias. El combustible a_ejo hace que ficido y dep6sitos de goma se forme en el sistema de combustible o en partes de carburador esenciales. Para impedir prolemas relacionados con ei combustible: 1. Agregue ei estabilizador para la gasolina siguiendo las instrucciones del fabricante. Cuando agregue un estabilizador para la gasolina, Ilene el tanque de combustible con gasolina fresca. Si s61o estfi parcialmente Ileno, eiaire en ei tanque promoverfi el deterioro del combustible durante ei aimacenaje. Si usted mantiene un recipiente con gasolina para el reabastecimiento, asegQrese que s61o contiene gasolina fresca. 2. Despues de agregar el estabilizador para ia gasolina, ponga en marcha el motor ai aire libre por 10 minutos para asegurarse que la gasolina tratada reemplaz6 a ia gasolina no tratada en el carburador. 3. PREPARACION DE LA CORTADORA DE CO'SPED • Limpie y iubrique la cortadora como se describe en las instrucciones de lubricaci6n. • No utilice una lavadora a presi6n ni una manguera de jardin para limpiar su unidad. • Cubra la cuchilla de la cortadora con grasa para chasis para impedir la oxidaci6n. • Refierase a la PREPARACION DEL MOTOR para instrucciones de almacenaje de motor correctas. • Almacene la unidad en una zona limpia y seca. No la almacene cerca de materiales corrosivos como pot ejemplo fertilizantes. Cuando almacene cuaiquier tipo de equipo motorizado en un gaip6n de dep6sito met_.iico o con poca ventilaci6n, tenga especial cuidado de realizarle un tratamiento antioxidante al equipo. Use aceite ligero o silicona para recubrir ei equipo, especialmente los cables y partes m6viles de su cortadora antes de aimacenarla. IMPORTANTE: Si el estabilizador de combustible no es usado, usted tiene que drenar la gasolina del equipo antes del almacenaje. Poner en marcha el motor hasta que se detenga de una falta de combustible. Realice el siguiente antes del almacenaje a largo plazo del equipo: 1. Mientras ei motor es todavia caliente, petr61eo de cambio. 2. Quite la bujia y vierta aproximadamente 1/2 la onz. (15 ml) del nuevo petr61eo de motor en la cavidad de bujia que pone el petr61eo en el cilindro. Sustituya la bujia bien. 3. Cuerda de juez de salida de tir6n despacio. Este gira el cigQe_al del motor y distribuye el petr61eo pot ei motor. 4. A_ada el estabilizador de combustible o drene el combustible del motor. 5. Responsabilidades del propietario en relacibn con la garantia Como propietario del motor todo terreno peque_o, Ud. es responsable de la realizaci6n del mantenimiento requerido que se incluye en las instrucciones de operaci6n y mantenimiento. AIcance de la cobertura Sears garantiza al poseedor inicial y a los compradores subsiguientes que las piezas con garantia no tendr_n defectos en materiales ni mano de obra que provoquen la falla de las mismas durante un periodo de dos aSos a partir de la fecha en que el motor se entrega a un comprador particular. 3. Sin cargo La reparaci6n o reemplazo de cualquier parte con garantia se realizar_ sin cargo alguno para el poseedor, incluyendo tareas de diagn6stico que permitan determinar si una parte con garantia es defectuosa, siempre que dicho diagn6stico se realice en un distribuidor de servicios Sears autoriza- do.
