GENERAL OPERATION • Read this operator's manual carefully in its entirety before attempting to assemble this machine. Read, understand, and follow all instructions on the machine and in the manual(s) before operation. Be completely familiar with the controls and the proper use of this machine before operating it. Keep this manual in a safe place for future and regular reference and for ordering replacement parts. ,, Be familiar with all controls and their proper operation. Know how to stop the machine and disengage them quickly. ,, This machine is a precision piece of power equipment, not a plaything. Therefore, exercise extreme caution at all times. Your unit has been designed to perform one job: to mow grass. Do not use it for any other purpose. ,, Never allow children under 14 years old to operate this machine. Chil- dren 14 years old and over should read and understand the instructions in this manual and should be trained and supervised by a parent. ,, Only responsible individuals who are familiar with these rules of safe operation should be allowed to use this machine. ,, Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used. Remove all stones, sticks, wire, bones, toys and other foreign objects which could be tripped over or picked up and thrown by the blade. Thrown objects can cause serious personal injury. ,, Plan your mowing pattern to avoid discharge of material toward roads, sidewalks, bystanders and the like. Also, avoid discharging material against a wall or obstruction which may cause discharged material to ricochet back toward the operator. ,, To help avoid blade contact or a thrown object injury, stay in operator zone behind handles and keep children, bystanders, helpers, and pets at least 75 feet from mower while it is in operation. Stop machine if anyone enters area. ,, Always wear safety glasses or safety goggles during operation and while performing an adjustment or repair to protect your eyes. Thrown objects which ricochet can cause serious injury to the eyes. ,, Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and close-fitting slacks and shirts. Shirts and pants that cover the arms and legs and steel-toed shoes are recommended. Never operate this machine in bare feet, sandals, slippery or light weight (e.g. canvas) shoes. ,, Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts or under cutting deck. Contact with blade can amputate hands and feet. ,, A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade contact or thrown object injuries. ,, Many injuries occur as a result of the mower being pulled over the foot during a fall caused by slipping or tripping. Do not hold on to the mower if you are falling; release the handle immediately. ,, Never pull the mower back toward you while you are walking. If you must back the mower away from a wall or obstruction first look down and behind to avoid tripping and then follow these steps: a. Step back from mower to fully extend your arms. b. Be sure you are well balanced with sure footing. c. Pull back slowly, no more than half way towards you. d. Repeat these steps as needed. ,, Do not operate the mower while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. ,, Do not engage the self-propelled mechanism on units so equipped while starting engine. ,, The blade control handle is a safety device. Never attempt to bypass its operation. Doing so makes the safety device inoperative and may result in personal injury through contact with the rotating blade. The blade control handle must operate easily in both directions and automatically return to the disengaged position when released. ,, Never operate the mower in wet grass. Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. If you feel you are losing your footing, release the blade control handle immediately and the blade will stop rotating within three seconds. ,, Mow only in daylight or good artificial light. Walk, never run. ,, Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives, walks or roads. 3
• If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally, stop the engine and check immediately for the cause. Vibration is generally a warning of trouble. • Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes to a complete stop before removing the grass catcher or unclogging the chute. The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few seconds after the engine is shut off. Never place any part of the body in the blade area until you are sure the blade has stopped rotating. • Never operate mower without proper trailshield, discharge cover, grass catcher, blade control handle, or other safety protective devices in place and working. Never operate mower with damaged safety devices. Failure to do so can result in personal injury. • Muffler and engine become hot and can cause a burn. Do not touch. • Only use parts and accessories made for this machine by manufacturer. Failure to do so can result in personal injury. • When starting engine, pull cord slowly until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly. Rapid retraction of starter cord (kickback) will pull hand and arm toward engine faster than you can let go. Broken bones, fractures, bruises or sprains could result. • If situations occur which are not covered in this manual, use care and good judgment. Contact your Sears Service Center for assistance. SLOPE OPERATION Slopes are a major factor related to slip and fall accidents which can result in severe injury. Operation on slopes requires extra caution. If you feel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it. For your safety, use the slope gauge included as part of this manual to measure slopes before operating this unit on a sloped or hilly area. If the slope is greater than 15 degrees, do not mow it. Do: • Mow across the face of slopes; never up and down. Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes. • Watch for holes, ruts, rocks, hidden objects, or bumps which can cause you to slip or trip. Tall grass can hide obstacles. • Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. If you feel you are losing your balance, release the blade control handle immediately, and the blade will stop rotating within 3 seconds. Do Not: • Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches or embankments, where you could lose your footing or balance. • Do not mow slopes greater than 15 degrees as shown on the slope gauge. • Do not mow on wet grass. Unstable footing could cause slipping. SERVICE Safe Handling Of Gasoline: • To avoid personal injury or property damage use extreme care in handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive. Serious personal injury can occur when gasoline is spilled on yourself or your clothes which can ignite. Wash your skin and change clothes immediately. • Use only an approved gasoline container. • Never fill containers inside a vehicle or on a truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner. Always place containers on the ground away from your vehicle before filling. • Remove gas-powered equipment from the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground. If this is not possible, then refuel such equipment on a trailer with a portable container, rather than from a gasoline dispenser nozzle. • Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the fuel tank or container opening at all times until fueling is complete. Do not use a nozzle lock-open device. • Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other sources of ignition. • Never fuel machine indoors because flammable vapors will accumu- late in the area. • Never remove gas cap or add fuel while engine is hot or running. Allow engine to cool at least two minutes before refueling. • Never over fill fuel tank. Fill tank to no more than 1 inch below bottom of filler neck to provide for fuel expansion. • Replace gasoline cap and tighten securely. • If gasoline is spilled, wipe it off the engine and equipment. Move unit to another area. Wait 5 minutes before starting engine. • Never store the machine or fuel container near an open flame, spark or pilot light as on a water heater, space heater, furnace, clothes dryer, or other gas appliances. • To reduce fire hazard, keep mower free of grass, leaves, or other debris build-up. Clean up oil or fuel spillage and remove any fuel soaked debris. • Allow a mower to cool at least 5 minutes before storing. General Service: • Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas. • Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make certain the blade and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine to prevent unintended starting. • Check the blade and engine mounting bolts at frequent intervals for proper tightness. Also, visually inspect blade for damage (e.g., bent, cracked, worn) Replace blade with the original equipment manufacture's (O.E.M.) blade only, listed in this manual. "Use of parts which do not meet the original equipment specifications may lead to improper performance and compromise safety!" • Mower blades are sharp and can cut. Wrap the blade or wear gloves, and use extra caution when servicing them. • Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight to be sure the equipment is in safe working condition. • Never tamper with safety devices. Check their proper operation regularly. • After striking a foreign object, stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine. Thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage. Repair the damage before starting and operating the mower. • Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment while the engine is running. • Grass catcher components, discharge cover, and trailshield are subject to wear and damage which could expose moving parts or allow objects to be thrown. For safety protection, frequently check components and replace immediately with original equipment manufacturer's (O.E.M.) parts only, listed in this manual. "Use of parts which do not meet the original equipment specifications may lead to improper performance and compromise safety!" • Do not change the engine governor setting or overspeed the engine. The governor controls the maximum safe operating speed of the engine. Do not crank engine with spark plug removed. • Check fuel line, tank, cap, and fittings frequently for cracks or leaks. Replace if necessary. • Maintain or replace safety and instruction labels, as necessary. • Observe proper disposal laws and regulations. Improper disposal of fluids and materials can harm the environment. Your Responsibility: Restrict the use of this power machine to persons who read, understand, and follow the warnings and instructions in this manual and on the machine. 4

IMPORTANT: This unit is shipped without gasoline or oil in the engine. Be certain to service engine with gasoline and oil as instructed in the Operation section before starting or running your machine. NOTE: Reference to right and left hand side of the Lawn Mower is observed from the operating position. OPENING CARTON 1. Cut each corner of the carton vertically from top to bottom. 2. Remove all loose parts. 3. Remove loose packing material. REMOVING UNIT FROM CARTON 1. Lift unit from the rear to detach it from underlying carton material and roll unit out of carton. 2. Check carton thoroughly for any other loose parts. Remove any packing material which may be between upper and lower handles. a. Pull up and back on upper handle as shown in Figure 1. Make certain the lower handle is seated securely into the handle mounting brackets. Do not crimp cables while lifting the handle up. b. Tighten star knobs to secure upper handle to lower handle. Make sure that each carriage bolt is seated properly in the handle. 2. Locate the hairpin clip on the weld pin on each side of lower handle. a. Remove hairpin clip from this hole. Using a pair of pliers, insert hairpin clip into the hole on pin closest to the bracket. See Figure 2. Repeat on other side. b. Insert a carriage bolt from the hardware pack into the upper hole on the handle mounting bracket. Secure with one plastic wing nut, also included in the hardware pack. Repeat on other side with remaining items from hardware pack. NOTE: Make certain the drive cable is routed around the outside and above the lower handle so it does not interfere with attaching the grass bag. The chute door has been designed to move the starter rope out of the way of the bag when the chute door is opened. /. f Figure 2 8
3. The rope guide, which is connected to the support rod, is located on the right side of the lower handle. See Figure 3. a. Hold blade control against upper handle. b. Pull starter rope out of the engine. Release blade control. c. Slip starter rope into rope guide. 4. Attach cables to the lower handle with the cable ties already on the lower handle. Insert pegs on cable ties into the holes on the lower handle. See Figure 4. Pull cable ties tight and cut off the extra. Attaching the Grass Catcher The mower was shipped with the mulching baffle installed on the unit. For bagging purposes, you will have to attach the grass bag and its adapter in place of the mulching baffle. 1. Remove three wing nuts holding the mulching baffle in place and remove from unit. See Figure 5. 2. Replace with grass bag adapter, while making sure the front lip of adapter goes under the edge of the deck. Secure with wing nuts previously removed. 3. Lift chute door on the grass bag adapter and slide grass bag onto the adapter. See Figure 6. Figure 3 ( Figure 6 9 Figure 4 / Figure 5 ,J
ADJUSTMENTS Cutting Height The cutting height adjustment lever is located above the rear left wheel. See Figure 7A insert. 1. Pull lever out and away from mower. 2. Move lever forward or back for desired cutting height. 3. Release lever towards mower deck. The front wheel cutting height is determined by selecting one of six positions on each caster assembly. To adjust front cutting height, refer to Figure 7B and proceed as follows: 1. Remove wing nut from axle bolt. Slide axle bolt and wave washer from the assembly and select a cutting height. 2. With wave washer on axle bolt, reinsert hardware in the square hole desired through wheel assembly and secure with wing nut previously removed. IMPORTANT: All wheels must be placed in the same relative position. For rough or uneven lawns, move the height adjustment lever to a higher position. This will stop scalping of grass. The casters can be locked in a straight ahead position or position to swivel freely. See Figure 70 insert. 1. Lift lock pins. 2. Place in larger holes to lock wheels. Place pins in smaller holes to allow casters to rotate freely for turning. Drive Control The adjustment wheel is located in the drive control handle housing and is used to tighten or loosen the drive belt. You will have to adjust the drive control if any of the following happens: 1. The mower does not propel itself with the drive control engaged. 2. The mower's drive wheels hesitate with the drive control engaged. If either of these conditions occur, rotate the adjustment wheel clockwise to tighten and counter-clockwise to loosen cable to adjust the drive control. See Figure 8. f Figure 8 NOTE: For some people the drive control may not be in a comfortable position. You can adjust the handle by tightening the adjustment wheel. 10

See Figure 9. Depress and squeeze it against the upper handle to operate the unit. Release it to stop engine and blade. The electric start ignition key is located on the left side of the handle panel. It is used only for the electric starter. SIDE DISCHARGE CHUTE This blade control is a safety device. Never attempt to bypass its operations. Your mower is shipped as a mulcher. To discharge the grass clippings to the side instead, follow the instructions in the Assembly section to attach the side discharge chute. CUTTING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT LEVER The cutting height adjustment lever is located above the left rear wheel. To adjust the cutting height, refer to the Assembly section. DRIVE CONTROL The drive control is located on the upper handle. Squeeze the drive control to engage the drive system. Release it to disengage the drive system. SHIFT LEVER The shift lever is located on the drive control housing on the upper handle. This lever is used to select the forward speed of the mower. When changing speed selection, release the drive control. IMPORTANT: Move the shift lever only when the engine is running. Changing the shift lever setting with the engine off can damage the mower. Keep hands and feet away from the chute area on cutting deck. Refer to warning label on the unit. RECOIL STARTER The recoil starter is connected to the support rod and is located on the right side of the lower handle. Stand behind the unit and pull the recoil starter rope to start the unit. GAS CAP Remove the gas cap to add fuel to the fuel tank. Use clean, fresh, regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87 octane. SPARK PLUG Refer to the Maintenance section for instructions on spark plug replacement. OIL CAP/DIPSTICK Refer to the Maintenance section for instructions on checking the oil. 11
GAS AND OIL FILL-UP Oil (one bottle shipped with unit) First Time Use 1. Remove oil fill dipstick. 2. With the lawn mower on level ground, use a funnel to empty entire contents of oil bottle provided into the engine. 3. Replace oil fill dipstick and tighten. Subsequent Uses Only use high quality detergent oil rated with API service classification SF, SG, SH, or SJ. Select the oil's SAE viscosity grade according to the expected operating temperature. Follow the chart below. 'Colder -'_ 32°F _Warmer ,.._ Oi! Viscosity Chart J Although multi-viscosity oils (5W30, 10W30, etc.) improve starting in cold weather, they will result in increased oil consumption when used above 32°E Check your engine oil level more frequently to avoid possible engine damage from running low on oil. See Figure 9. 1. Check the oil level before each operation making certain not to rub the dipstick along the inside walls of the oil fill tube and without screwing it in. This would result in a false dipstick reading. Refill to FULL mark on dipstick, if necessary. Capacity is approximately 18 oz. Overfilling will cause the engine to smoke profusely and will result in poor engine performance. 2. Replace oil fill dipstick and tighten. 3. Keep oil level at FULL. Running the engine with too little oil can result in permanent engine damage. Gasoline l Use care handling gasoline, extremely extreme when Gasoline is flammable and the vapors are explosive. Never fuel machine indoors or while the engine is hot or running. Extinguish cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and other sources of ignition. 1. Remove fuel cap from the fuel tank. 2. Make sure the container from which you will pour the gasoline is clean and free from rust or foreign particles. Never use gasoline that may be stale from long periods of storage in its container. Gasoline that has been sitting for any period longer than four weeks should be considered stale. 3. Fill fuel tank with clean, fresh, unleaded regular gasoline only. Do not use gasoline containing METHANOL. Replace fuel cap. Use of alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and forma- tion of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system [of an eng ne wh e n storage. o 0 0 0 Q Figure 9 To avoid engine problems, the fuel system should be emptied before storage for 30 days or longer. Drain the gas tank, start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuel next season. See STORAGE Instructions for additional information. Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur. Be sure no one other than the operator is standing near the lawn mower while starting engine or operating mower. Never run engine indoors or in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas. Keep hands, feet, hair and loose clothing away from any moving parts on engine and lawn mower. 2 TO START ENGINE 1. Attach spark plug wire and rubber boot to spark plug. 2. Gas tank should be at least 3/4 full before starting. 3. Push primer button 3 times. Do not prime on hot days or to restart a warm engine after a short shutdown. See Figure 10. 4. Standing behind the mower, depress the blade control and hold it against the upper handle. See Figure 10. 5. This mower has two separate starting systems, electric and recoil. Electric Start: Turn ignition key to the right to start the engine. Release the key after the engine starts. Recoil Start: Grasp starter handle and pull rope out slowly until engine reaches start of compression cycle (rope will pull slightly harder at this point). Let the rope rewind slowly. Pull rope with a rapid, continuous, full arm stroke. Keeping a firm grip on the starter handle, let the rope rewind slowly.
TO STOP ENGINE f 1. Release blade control to stop the engine and blade. 2. Disconnect spark plug wire and ground it to the retaining post to ,--__5./ prevent accidental starting while the equipment is unattended. Wait for the blade to stop completely before performing any work on the mower or to remove the side discharge chute. USING YOUR LAWN MOWER Be sure lawn is clear of stones, sticks, wire, or other objects which could damage lawn mower or engine. Such objects could be accidently thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator and others. 1. Once the engine is running, squeeze the drive control against the upper handle to propel mower. Release it to disengage the drive. 2. Use the shift lever to select the forward speed of the mower- 1 is the slowest speed, 6 is the fastest. When changing speed selection, release the drive control. IMPORTANT: Move the shift lever only when the engine is running. Changing the shift lever setting with the engine off can damage the mower. If you strike a foreign object, stop the engine. Remove wire from the spark plug, thoroughly inspect mower for any damage, and repair damage before restarting and operating. Extensive vibration of mower during operation is an indication of damage. The unit should be promptly inspected and repaired. USING GRASS CATCHER You can use the grass catcher bag to collect clippings while you are operating the mower. 1. Attach grass catcher following instructions in the Assembly section. Grass clippings will automatically collect in the bag as you run the mower. 2. Operate the mower till the grass bag is full. 3. Stop engine completely by releasing the blade control. Make sure that the unit has come to a complete stop. 4. While holding the grass bag by both the rear handle and the lower handle, lift the grass bag straight up off the adapter. The chute door will move the rope out of the way of the bag. 5. Continuing to hold the lower handle, raise the rear of the grass bag and release the lower handle over a proper receptacle. The grass bag will open and the grass clippings will disperse. When replacing the grass bag, be sure the top of the bag rests on the wire support between the handles. USING SIDE DISCHARGE Follow steps below to install the side discharge chute: 1. Remove mulching baffle or grass bag adapter from unit by disconnecting wing nuts. 2. Attach side discharge chute to unit and secure with the three wing nuts. See Figure 11. Figure 11 The operation of any lawn mower can result in foreign objects being thrown into the eyes, which can damage your eyes severely. Always wear safety glasses while operating the mower, or while performing any adjustments or repairs on it. USING AS IVlULCHER For mulching grass, remove the grass catcher or the side discharge chute from the mower, and reattach the mulching baffle. Refer to page 9 of Assembly section. For effective mulching, do not cut wet grass. If the grass has been allowed to grow in excess of four inches, mulching is not recommended. Use the grass catcher to bag clippings instead. 13
Always stop engine, disconnect spark plug wire, and ground against engine before performing any type of maintenance on your machine. GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS • Always observe safety rules when performing any maintenance. • The warranty on this lawn mower does not cover items that have been subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receive full value from warranty, operator must maintain the equipment as instructed here. • Changing of engine-governed speed will void engine warranty. • All adjustments should be checked at least once each season. • Periodically check all fasteners and make sure these are tight. f Electrode Porcelain --* .030 (.76 mm) gap Figure 12 ENGINE MAINTENANCE Checking the Spark Plug Clean spark plug and reset the electrode gap to 0.030" at least once a season; replace every 100 hours of operation. Clean area around the spark plug base. Do not sandblast spark plug. Spark plug should be cleaned by scraping or wire brushing and washing with a commercial solvent. Remove and inspect the spark plug. Check gap to make sure it is set at .030". See Figure 12. Replace the spark plug if electrodes are pitted, burned, or the porcelain is cracked. Servicing the Air Cleaner Do not use pressurized air or solvents to clean the air cleaner cartridge. The air cleaner prevents damaging dirt, dust, etc., from entering the carburetor and being forced into the engine and is important to engine life and performance. Never run the engine without an air cleaner completely assembled. Clean or replace the air cleaner every 25 hours of operation. 1. Loosen screws that hold the air filter cover. 2. Open cover and remove cartridge. See Figure 13. 3. Install new air cleaner cartridge. Cartridge must fit securely in base. 4. Place cover over air cleaner. 5. Tighten screws. NOTE: If the filter is torn or damaged in any way, replace it. f Screws Cover Air Cleaner Cartridge Base Figure 13 After servicing the air cleaner, be sure all the removed parts are reinstalled properly in place. Failure to securely fasten together air cleaner case and air cleaner body may cause dirt or other foreign materials to enter the engine while it is running, resulting in engine troubles or failures. 14
Check Engine Oil Check oil level before each operation. Be sure oil level is maintained. 1. Remove oil fill dipstick and wipe clean with cloth. 2. Replace dipstick without screwing it in. Remove and check oil level. Level should be at FULL mark. 3. If needed, add oil slowJy- recheck. Do not overfill. 4. Install and tighten dipstick. Do not overfill. Overfilling with oil may cause the engine to not start, hard starting, or engine smoking. If over the FULL mark on the dipstick, drain oil to reduce oil level to FULL mark on dipstick. Change Engine Oil • Only use high quality detergent oil rated with API service classification SF, SG, SH, or SJ. Select the oil's SAE viscosity grade according to the expected operating temperature. Refer to Operation section for viscosity chart. • Change engine oil after the first eight hours of operation, and every fifty hours thereafter. To Drain Oil 1. Drain the fuel from the tank by running the engine until the fuel tank is empty. Be sure the mower is level. 2. With engine OFF but still warm, disconnect spark plug wire and keep it away from spark plug. 3. Tip the mower, keeping the air cleaner above the oil fill. See Figure 14. 4. Remove the dipstick from the engine and pour entire oil contents from the crank case into an appropriate container. 5. Put the mower back to its operating position (on all four wheels). 6. Refill with approximately 18 oz. of fresh oil. Fill to FULL line on dipstick. Do not overfill. Refer to Gas And Oil Fill-Up in Operation section. 7. Replace oil fill dipstick and tighten. 8. Replace spark plug wire before starting. Used oil is a hazardous waste product. Dispose of used oil properly. Do not discard with household waste. Check with your local authori- ties or Sears Service Center for safe disposal/recycling facilities. Oil Fill/Dipstick Air Figure 14 Service Muffler • Inspect muffler periodically, and replace if necessary. Replace- ment parts for the muffler must be the same and installed in the same position as the original parts. Temperature of muffler and nearby engine areas may exceed 150 ° F (65°0). Avoid contact with these areas. Clean Engine • Daily or before every use, clean grass, chaff or accumulated debris from engine. Keep linkage, spring, and controls clean. Keep area around and behind muffler free of any combustible debris. • Keeping engine clean allows air movement around engine. • Engine parts should be kept clean to reduce the risk of overheat- ing and ignition of accumulated debris. Do not use water to clean engine parts. Water could contaminate fuel system. Use a brush or dry cloth. Carburetor Adjustment The carburetor on this engine is not adjustable. Engine Speed Do not tamper with the governor setting or the carburetor setting to increase the engine speed. Each carburetor is adjusted at the factory with either a cap or stop plate installed on the mixture screw. Any adjustments must be performed by a Sears or other qualified service dealer. 15
LUBRiCATiON lAIways stop engine, spark plug, ground against disconnect and engine before performing any type of maintenance on your machine. Blade Control Lubricate pivot points on the blade control at least once a season with light oil. The blade control must operate freely in both directions. See Figure 15. Wheels and Casters Lubricate the wheels and casters at least once a season with light oil (or motor oil). If wheels are removed for any reason, lubricate the axle bolt and inner surface of the wheel with light oil. See Figure 15. Grass Catcher Adapter Lubricate the torsion spring and pivot point on each end of the grass catcher adapter door at least once a season with light oil to prevent rust. See Figure 15. Transmission The transmission is pre-lubricated and sealed at the factory and does not require lubrication. CLEANING DECK Clean underside of the mower deck after each use to prevent build-up of grass clippings or other debris. Follow steps below for this job. 1. Disconnect spark plug wire. Drain gasoline from lawn mower or place a piece of plastic under the gas cap. 2. Tip mower so that it rests on the housing, keeping the muffler side down. Hold mower firmly. Never tip the mower more than 90 o in any direction and do not leave I the mower tipped for any length of time. Oil can drain into the upper part of the engine causing a starting problem. 3. Scrape and clean the underside of the deck with a suitable tool. Do not spray with water. IMPORTANT: Do not use a pressure washer or garden hose to clean your unit. These may cause damage to bearings, or the engine. The use of water will result in shortened life and reduce serviceability. 4. Put the mower back on its wheels on the ground. If you had put plastic under the gas cap earlier, make sure to remove it now. \ J Figure 15 f Figure 16 REPLACING REAR FLAP To replace rear flap, proceed as follows: 1. Cut off the flat end of the wire rod which secures it to the deck. See Figure 16. 2. Attach the new flap and new rod to the deck, bending the ends of the new rod over to secure to deck. 16
ADJUSTING SHIFT LEVER CABLE Periodic adjustment of the six speed shift cable may be necessary due to normal wear on the cable. Adjustment is needed if all six speeds do not work. The adjustable cable bracket is located on the left side of the mower beside the engine. See Figure 17. 1. Start engine and place shift lever in the sixth speed position. 2. Stop engine and disconnect spark plug wire and ground it against engine. 3. Loosen hex nut which secures the adjustable cable bracket. See Figure 17. 4. Push back on the adjustable cable bracket. 5. Tighten hex nut. BLADE CARE When removing the cutting blade for sharpening or replacement, protect your hands with a pair of heavy gloves or use a heavy rag to hold the blade. Periodically inspect the blade adapter for cracks, especially if you strike a foreign object. Replace when necessary. Follow the steps below for blade service. 1. Disconnect spark plug boot from spark plug. Turn mower on its side making sure that the air filter and the carburetor are facing up. 2. Remove the bolt and the blade bell support which hold the blade and the blade adapter to the engine crankshaft. See Figure 18. NOTE: When removing the blade, blade adapter, etc., be careful not to remove or lose parts above it associated with the engine pulley. 3. Remove blade and adapter from the crankshaft. See Figure 18. 4. Remove blade from the adapter for testing balance. Balance the blade on a round shaft screwdriver to check. Remove metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly. When sharpening the blade, follow the original angle of grind. Grind each cutting edge equally to keep the blade balanced. An unbalanced blade will cause excessive vibration when rotating at high speeds. It may cause damage to mower and could break causing personal injury. f J Figure 17 Support Bolt Figure 18 5. Lubricate the engine crankshaft and the inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil. Slide the blade adapter onto the engine crankshaft. Place the blade on the adapter such that the side of the blade marked "Bottom" (or with part number) faces the ground when the mower is in the operating position. Make sure that the blade is aligned and seated on the blade adapter flanges. 6. Place blade bell support on the blade. Align notches on the blade bell support with small holes in blade. 7. Replace hex bolt and tighten hex bolt to torque: 450 in. Ibs. rain., 600 in. Ibs. max. To ensure safe operation of your mower, periodically check the blade bolt for correct torque. BELT CARE NOTE: Several components must be removed in order to change the mower's drive belt. See an authorized Sears Service Center to have your belt replaced. 17
REPLACING BATTERY Batteries contain sulfuric acid which may cause burns. Do not short I circuit or mutilate batteries in any way. Do not put batteries in fire as _these may burst or release toxic materials. 1. Loosen star knobs securing upper and lower handles and carefully fold the upper handle down toward the lower handle as shown in Figure 19. 2. Remove the two screws securing battery cover to battery housing and place them to the side. See Figure 19. 3. Open battery cover, remove positive and negative leads from battery, remove and replace with new battery. Connect the positive lead to the positive side of the battery pack, then connect the negative side. NOTE: The battery you have may differ slightly from the one shown in Figure 20. Refer to the Parts List. iMPORTANT: When replacing battery pack in handle panel, battery pack must be positioned with the positive terminal to the left side and the negative terminal to the right side of panel (Positive terminal is closest to the key switch). See Figure 20. Replacing battery pack incorrectly will cause serious damage. 4. Reattach battery cover to battery housing by securing with the two screws removed earlier, making sure to snap the wire conduit on the left into place on the housing. 5. Fold handles back up and tighten star knobs. Do not remove the battery pack from the electric starter housing for any reason other than replacement. Charging Battery The battery contains corrosive fluid and toxic material; handle with care and keep away from children. Do not puncture, disassemble, mutilate or incinerate the battery. Explosive gases could be vented during charging or discharging. Use in a well ventilated area, away from sources of ignition. NOTE: The special designed plug on the charger will only fit into the plug on the battery box. 1. Plug the battery charger into the port on the underside of the battery housing. See Figure 21. 2. Insert the battery charger plug into a standard 120 volt household outlet. Charge battery for 8 to 10 hours before initial use. Failure to do so may result in diminished battery life. Do not charge longer than 12 hours. The battery should only need to be charged upon initial setup and after any other extended periods of non-use. 3. IMPORTANT: Always plug charger lead into battery pack lead first, and then insert battery charger plug into 120 volt standard household outlet. Follow this order of action every time you charge the battery. Use only the battery charger supplied with this mower. Replacing Fuse The electric starter circuit and battery are protected by a 40 ampere fuse. If the fuse burns out, the electric starter will not operate. If the unit fails to start with the electric starter, perform the following steps to check the fuse inside the battery housing: 1. Open the battery cover as described in Replacing Battery. See Figure 19. 2. Remove fuse from socket and inspect as shown in Figure 22. If it is burned out, replace with standard automotive 40 ampere fuse. 3. Carefully place wiring back into housing, close battery cover, and fold upper handle back into place. NOTE: The engine can be started manually if the fuse burns out. f Blown Fuse Figure 22 J MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE X Before performing any type of maintenance/service, disengage all controls and stop the engine. Wait until all moving parts have come to a complete stop. Disconnect spark plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent unintended starting. Follow the maintenance schedule given below. This chart describes service guidelines only. Use the Service Log column to keep track of completed maintenance tasks. Never store lawn mower with fuel in tank indoors or in poorly ventilated areas where fuel fumes may reach an open flame, spark, or pilot light as on a furnace, water heater, clothes dryer, or gas appliance. PREPARING THE ENGINE Equipment stored with fuel can become stale when stored over 30 days. Stale fuel causes acid and gum deposits to form in fuel system or on essential carburetor parts. Mix fuel stabilizer with fuel in tank or storage container. Run engine for a short time to circulate stabilizer through carburetor and engine. Engine and fuel with stabilizer can be stored up to 24 months. IMPORTANT: If fuel stabilizer is not used, you need to drain gasoline from equipment prior to storage. Perform the following before long-term storage of equipment: 1. While engine is still warm, change oil. 2. Remove spark plug and pour approximately 1/2 oz. (15 ml) of new engine oil into spark plug cavity which puts oil into cylinder. Replace spark plug securely. 3. Pull starter rope slowly. This turns the engine's crankshaft and distributes oil through the engine. 4. Add fuel stabilizer or drain fuel from engine. 5. Clean dirt and debris from top and all areas around engine. 6. Store in a clean, dry area. PREPARING THE LAWN MOWER • Clean and lubricate mower thoroughly as described in the lubrica- tion instructions. • Do not use a pressure washer or garden hose to clean your unit. • Coat mower's cutting blade with chassis grease to prevent rusting. • Store mower in a dry, clean area. Do not store next to corrosive materials, such as fertilizer. When storing any type of power equipment in a poorly ventilated or metal storage shed, care should be taken to rust-proof the equipment. Using a light oil or silicone, coat the equipment, especially cables and all moving parts of your lawn mower before storage. Battery The battery must be stored with a full charge. Extended storage of a discharged battery will reduce life and capacity of the battery. 20

In California, new small off-road engines must be designed, built and equipped to meet the State's stringent anti-smog standards. Elsewhere in the United States, new non-road, spark-ignition engines certified for model year 1997 and later must meet similar standards set forth by the U.S. EPA. Sears must warrant the emission control system on your YEAR 1997 AND LATER ENGINES WHICH ARE PURCHASED AND USED ELSEWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES (AND AFTER JANUARY 1,2001 IN CANADA). Control Defects Warranty Statement engine for the periods of time listed below, provided there has been no abuse, neglect or improper maintenance of your small off-road engine.Your emis- sion control system includes parts such as the carburetor, air cleaner, ignition system, muffler and catalytic converter. Also included may be connectors and other emission related assemblies. Where a warrantable condition exists, Sears will repair your small off-road engine at no cost to you including diagnosis, parts and labor. Sears Emission Control Defects Warranty Coverage Small off-road engines are warranted relative to emission control parts defects for a period of one year, subject to provisions set forth below. If any covered Owner's Warranty As the small off-road engine owner, you are responsible for the performance of the required maintenance listed in your Operating and Maintenance Instruc- tions. Sears recommends that you retain all your receipts covering maintenance on your small off-road engine, but Sears cannot deny warranty solely for the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure the performance of all scheduled maintenance. As the small off-road engine owner, you should however be aware that Sears may deny you warranty coverage if your small off-road engine or a part has failed due to abuse, neglect, improper maintenance or unap- part on your engine is defective, the part will be repaired or replaced by Sears. Responsibilities proved modifications.You are responsible for presenting your small off-road engine to an Authorized Sears Service Dealer as soon as a problem exists. The undisputed warranty repairs should be completed in a reasonable amount of time, not to exceed 30 days. If you have any questions regarding your warranty rights and responsibilities, you should contact a Sears Service Representative at 1 --800--469--4663. The emission warranty is a defects warranty. Defects are judged on normal engine performance.The warranty is not related to an in-use emission test. Sears Emission Control Defects Warranty Provisions The following are specific provisions relative to your Emission Control Defects Warranty Coverage. It is in addition to the Sears engine warranty for non-regulated engines found in the Operating and Maintenance Instructions. 1. Warranted Parts Coverage under this warranty extends only to the parts listed below (the emission control systems parts) to the extent these parts were present on the engine purchased. a. Fuel Metering System • Cold start enrichment system • Carburetor and internal parts • Fuel Pump b. Air lnduction System • Air cleaner • Intake manifold c. Ignition System • Spark plug(s) • Magneto ignition system d. Catalyst System • Catalytic converter • Exhaust manifold • Air injection system or pulse valve e. Miscellaneous Items Used in Above Systems • Vacuum, temperature, position, time sensitive valves and switches • Connectors and assemblies 2. Length of Coverage Sears warrants to the initial owner and each subsequent purchaser that the Warranted Parts shall be free from defects in materials and workman- ship which caused the failure of the Warranted Parts for a period of one year from the date the engine is delivered to a retail purchaser. 3. No Charge Repair or replacement of any Warranted Part will be performed at no charge to the owner, including diagnostic labor which leads to the determination that a Warranted Part is defective, if the diagnostic work is performed at an Authorized Sears Service Dealer. For emissions warranty service contact your nearest Authorized Sears Service Dealer as listed in the "Yellow Pages" under "Engines, Gasoline," "Gasoline Engines," "Lawn Mowers," or similar category. 4. Claims and Coverage Exclusions Warranty claims shall be filed in accordance with the provisions of the Sears Engine Warranty Policy. Warranty coverage shall be excluded for failures of Warranted Parts which are not original Sears parts or because of abuse, neglect or improper maintenance as set forth in the Sears Engine Warranty Policy. Sears is not liable to cover failures of Warranted Parts caused by the use of add-on, non-original, or modified parts. 5. Maintenance Any Warranted Part which is not scheduled for replacement as required maintenance or which is scheduled only for regular inspection to the effect of "repair or replace as necessary" shall be warranted as to defects for the warranty period. Any Warranted Part which is scheduled for replacement as required maintenance shall be warranted as to defects only for the period of time up to the first scheduled replacement for that part. Any replacement part that is equivalent in performance and durability may be used in the performance of any maintenance or repairs. The owner is responsible for the performance of all required maintenance, as defined in the Sears Operating and Maintenance Instructions. 6. Consequential Coverage Coverage hereunder shall extend to the failure of any engine components caused by the failure of any Warranted Part still under warranty. Look For Relevant Emissions Durability Period and Air index information On Your Engine Emissions Label Engines that are certified to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Tier 2 Emission Standards must display information regarding the Emissions Durability Period and the Air Index. Sears, Roebuck and Co., U.S.A. makes this information available to the consumer on our emission labels. The Emissions Durability Period describes the number of hours of actual running time for which the engine is certified to be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenance in accordance with the Operating & Mainte- nance Instructions. The following categories are used: Moderate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 125 hours of actual engine running time. Intermediate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 250 hours of actual engine running time. Extended: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 500 hours of actual engine running time. For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to 25 hours per year. Therefore, the Emissions Durability Period of an engine with an intermediate rating would equate to 10 to 12 years. The Air Index is a calculated number describing the relative level of emissions for a specific engine family. The lower the Air Index, the cleaner the engine. This information is displayed in graphical form on the emissions label. After July 1,2000, Look For Emissions Compliance Period On Engine Emissions Compliance Label After July 1, 2000 certain Sears, Roebuck and Co., U.S.A. engines will be certified to meet the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Phase 2 emission standards. For Phase 2 certified engines, the Emis- sions Compliance Period referred to on the Emissions Compliance label indicates the number of operating hours for which the engine has been shown to meet Federal emission requirements. For engines less than 225 cc displacement, Category C = 125 hours, B = 250 hours and A = 500 hours. For engines of 225 cc or more, Category C = 250 hours, B = 500 hours and A = 1000 hours. Si siente que pierde el equilibrio, suelte inmediatamente la manija de control de la cuchilla y la misma dejar_, de rotar en tres segundos. • Corte el cesped solamente con luz de dia o con buena luz artificial. Camine, nunca corra. • Detenga la cuchilla cuando cruce caminos de gravilla, sendas o senderos. • Si la m_.quina comenzara a vibrar de manera anormal, detenga el motor y busque inmediatamente la causa. La vibracidn per Io general es una advertencia de algOn problema. • Apague el motor y espere hasta que la cuchilla se detenga completamente antes de retirar el colector de cesped o de desbloquear el canal. La cuchilla conti@a rotando per unos cuantos segundos desp@s que el motor se ha apagado. Nunca coloque ninguna parte del cuerpo en el _.rea de la cuchilla
hasta que este seguro de que la misma ha detenido su movimiento rotatorio. • Nunca opere la cortadora si no tiene colocados y funcionando el escudo posterior apropiado, la cubierta de descarga, el colector de cesped, la manija de control de la cuchilla y otros dispositivos de seguridad y protecci6n. Nunca opere la cortadora si los dispositivos de seguridad est_.n daRados. Si no Io hace, pueden producirse lesiones personales. • El silenciador y el motor se calientan y pueden causar quemaduras. No los toque. • Utilice solamente piezas y accesorios originales de fgbrica. Si no Io hace, pueden producirse lesiones personales. • Para encender el motor, jale de la cuerda lentamente hasta que sienta resistencia, luego jale rgpidamente. El repliegue rgpido de la cuerda de arranque (tensi6n de retroceso) le jalarg la mane y el braze hacia el motor m_.s rgpido de Io que usted puede soltar. El resultado pueden ser huesos rotes, fracturas, hematomas o esguinces. • Si se presentan situaciones que no est_.n previstas en este manual, sea cuidadoso y use el sentido comOn. Comunfquese con su centre de servicio Sears para obtener ayuda. FUNCIONAiVlIENTO EN PENDIENTES Las pendientes son un factor importante en los accidentes ocasionados por derrapes y cafdas y pueden producir lesiones graves. La operaci6n en pendientes requiere mucha precauci6n. Si no se siente seguro en una pendiente, no realice el corte de cesped. Para su seguridad, use el indicador de pendientes que se incluye come parte de este manual para medir la pendiente antes de operar la unidad en una zona inclinada. Si la pendiente supera los 15 grades, no realice el corte de cesped. Haga Io siguiente: • Corte el cesped de la pendiente en sentido transversal, nunca hacia arriba y abajo. Tenga mucho cuidado al cambiar de direcci6n en pendiente. • Este atento a los agujeros, surcos, rocas, objetos ocultos o bultos que puedan provocar que se resbale o se tropiece. El cesped alto puede ocultar obst_.culos. • Siempre este seguro de que est,. bien parade. Si tropieza y cae puede lesionarse gravemente. Si siente que pierde el equilibrio, suelte inmediatamente la manija de control de la cuchilla y la misma dejar_, de rotar en 3 segundos. No haga Io siguiente: • No corte el cesped cerca de hundimientos, zanjas o terraplenes, podrfa perder el equilibrio. • No corte el cesped en pendientes que superen los 15 grades come Io indica el medidor de pendientes. • No corte el cesped hOmedo. Si no est,. firmemente parade, puede resbalarse. SERVlCIO Manejo seguro de la gasolina: • Para evitar lesiones personales o dares materiales sea sumamente cuidadoso al manipular la gasolina. La gasolina es sumamente inflamable y sus vapores pueden causar explosiones. Si se derrama gasolina encima o sobre la ropa se puede lesionar gravemente ya que se puede incendiar. Lgvese la piel y c_.mbiese de ropa de inmediato. • Utilice s61o recipientes para gasolina aprobados. • Nunca Ilene los recipientes en el interior de un vehfculo o cami6n o caja de remolque con recubrimientos pl_.sticos. Coloque siempre los recipientes en el piso y lejos del vehfculo antes de realizar la carga. • Retire el equipo a gasolina del cami6n o remolque y Ilenelo en el suelo. Si esto no es posible, Ilene el equipo en un remolque con un recipiente port_.til, en vez de hacerlo con una boquilla dispensadora de gasolina. • Mantenga la boquilla en contacto con el borde del dep6sito de combustible o con la abertura del recipiente en todo memento, hasta terminar de cargar. No utilice un dispositivo de boquilla de apertura/cierre. • Apague redes los cigarrillos, cigarros, pipas y otras fuentes de combusti6n. • Nunca cargue combustible en la m_.quina en interiores porque los vapores inflamables podrfan acumularse en el grea. • Nunca saque la tapa de la gasolina ni agregue combustible mientras el motor est,. caliente o en marcha. Deje que el motor se enfrfe per Io menos dos minutes antes de volver a cargar combustible. • Nunca Ilene en exceso el dep6sito de combustible. Llene el tanque a no m_.s de 1 pulgada per debajo de la base del cuello del tap6n de carga, para permitir la expansi6n del combustible. • Vuelva a colocar la tapa de la gasolina y ajOstela bien. • Limpie la gasolina que se pueda haber derramado sobre el motor y el equipo. Traslade la m_.quina a otra zona. Espere 5 minutes antes de encender el motor. • Nunca almacene la m_.quina o el recipiente de combustible en un espacio cerrado donde haya fuego, chispas o aparatos con piloto come per ejemplo, calentadores de agua, calefactores, homes, secadores de ropa u otros aparatos a gas. • Para reducir el riesgo de incendio mantenga la m_.quina limpia de paste, hojas y de acumulaci6n de otros escombros. Limpie los derrames de aceite o combustible y saque todos los residues embebidos en combustible. • Deje que la m_.quina se enfffe per Io menos 5 minutes antes de almacenarla. Servicio general: • Nunca encienda el motor en espacios cerrados o en una zona con poca ventilaci6n. El escape del motor contiene mon6xido de carbono, un gas inodoro y letal. • Antes de limpiar, reparar o inspeccionar la m_.quina, compruebe que la cuchilla y todas las partes que se mueven se hayan detenido. Desconecte el cable de la bujfa y p6ngalo haciendo masa contra el motor para evitar que se encienda accidentalmente. • Revise los pernos de montaje de la cuchilla y del motor a intervalos frecuentes para verificar que esten bien apretados. Inspeccione adem_.s visualmente la cuchilla en busca de dares (per ejemplo, abolladuras, desgaste, roturas). Reemplace la cuchilla Onicamente con equipo original del fabricante (OEM) listado en este manual. IMPORTANTE: Esta unidad se envfa sin gasolina ni aceite en el motor. Antes de comenzar o correr ia ma.quina cargue el motor con gasolina y aceite como se indica en la secci6n de operaci6n de este manual. NOTA: Las referencias a los lados derecho e izquierdo de ia cortadora de cesped se hacen observando la ma.quina desde la posici6n de operaci6n. APERTURA DE LA CAJA DE CARTON 1. Corte cada una de ias esquinas de la caja verticaimente, de la parte superior a la base. 2. Saquetodas las piezas sueltas. 3. Quite el material de empaque suelto. C61VIO SACAR LA UNIDAD DE LA CAJA 1. Eleve la unidad desde la parte posterior para separarla del material de ia caja que quede debajo y haga rodar ia unidad fuera de ia caja. 2. Verifique cuidadosamente si en la caja queda aiguna parte suelta. Retire el material de empaque que pudiera estar entre las manijas superior e inferior. a. Tire hacia arriba y hacia atras ia manija superior como se muestra en la Figura 1. Asegurese de que ia manija inferior este asentada firmemente en los soportes de montaje de ia manija. Asimismo, no prense los cables mientras levanta la manija. b. Apriete las periiias estreiia que sujetan la manija superior a ia manija inferior. Asegurese de que cada perno del carro este apropiadamente asentado en la manija. 2. Localice el pasador de horquilla que se encuentra en el pasador soldado a cada lado de la manija inferior. a. Saque el pasador de horquilia de este orificio. Con un par de pinzas, inserte el pasador de horquilla en ei agujero del pasador ma.s cercano ai soporte. Vea la Figura 2. Repita del otro lado. b. Inserte un bul6n de carro dei paquete de elementos de ferreterfa en el orificio superior del soporte de montaje de la manija. Sujete con una tuerca pla.stica de mariposa, que tambien se incluye en el paquete de elementos de ferreterfa. Sostenga la manija de control de la cuchilla contra la manija superior. b. Jale la cuerda de arranque para sacarla del motor. Suelte el control de la cuchilla. c. Deslice la cuerda de arranque en la guia. 4. Una los cables a la manija inferior con las uniones de cable que ya se encuentran en la manija inferior. Inserte los pasadores de las uniones de cables dentro de los orificios de la manija inferior. Vea la Figura 4. Jaie las uniones de cables apreta.ndolas y recortando el exceso. Conexi6n de la colectora de c_sped La cortadora fue enviada con ia tolva de abono instalada en la unidad. Para fines de embolsado, debera, acoplar ia boisa colectora y su adaptador en lugar de la tolva de abono. 1. Extraiga ias tres tuercas de mariposa que sostienen ia toiva de abono en su iugar y retireia de la unidad. Vea ia Figura 5. 2. Reemplace con el adaptador de ia boisa colectora, asegurandose de que el labio frontal del adaptador encaje debajo del horde de la plataforma. AJUSTES _ _'_ AItura de torte La palanca de ajuste de altura de corte se ubica por encima de la rueda izquierda trasera. Vea el recuadro de la figura 7A. 1. Tire de la palanca hacia afuera de ia cortadora. 2. Mueva la palanca hacia adelante o hacia atrfis para la altura de corte deseada. 3. Libere la palanca hacia la plataforma de ia cortadora. La altura de corte de ia rueda frontal se determina seleccionando una de las seis posiciones en el montaje de cada ruedita. Para ajustar la altura de corte frontal, consulte la Figura 7B y reaiice Io siguiente: 1. Extraiga iatuerca de mariposa del perno del eje. Deslice el perno del eje y la arandela ondulada fuera del montaje y seleccione la altura de corte. 2. Con ia arandeia ondulada sobre el pemo del eje, reinserte los elementos de ferreteria en ei orificio cuadrado deseado a traves dei montaje de la rueda y asegure con la tuera mariposa previamente extrdda. IMPORTANTE: Todas las ruedas deben set colocadas en la misma posici6n relativa. Cuando ei terreno es agreste o irregular cambie ia palanca de ajuste de la aitura a una posici6n mils alta. De esta manera se cuida mils el cesped. Las rueditas pueden asegurarse en posici6n directamente hacia adelante o para que giren iibremente. Vea el recuadro de la figura 7C. 1. Levantelos pasadoresdefijaci6n. 2. Col6quelos en los agujeros mils grandes para trabar las ruedas. Coloque los pasadores en los orificios mils peque_os para permitir que las ruedas giren iibremente. Control de la transmisi6n La rueda de ajuste estfi ubicada en el alojamiento de la manija de control de transmisi6n y se utiliza para ajustar o aflojar la correa de transmisi6n. Deberfi ajustar el control de transmisi6n en case de que: 1. La cortadora no se autopropulsara con el control de transmisi6n engranado. 2. Las ruedas de transmisi6n de la cortadora temblaran con el control de transmisi6n engranado. Si ocurriera alguna de estas condiciones, gire la rueda de ajuste en el sentido de las agujas del reloj para ajustar yen sentido contrario alas agujas del reloj para aflojar el cable para ajustar el control de transmisi6n. CONTROL DE LA TRANSiVlISI6N El control de transmisi6n esta. ubicado en la manija superior. Apriete el control de la transmisi6n para engranar ei sistema de transmisi6n. Libere el control de transmisi6n para desengranar el sistema de transmisi6n. PALANCA DE CAIVIBIOS La palanca de cambios esta. ubicada en el alojamiento de control de transmisi6n sobre la manija superior. Esta palanca se utiliza para seleccionar ia velocidad de avance hacia adeiante de ia cortadora. Cuando cambie la selecci6n de velocidad, iibere el control de transmisi6n. J IMPORTANTE: Mueva ia palanca de cambios s61o cuando el motor este en marcha. Si cambia el ajuste de la palanca de cambios con el motor apagado, su cortadora puede resultar da_ada. La Nave de encendido electrico esta. ubicada en el lado izquierdo dei panel de la manija. Se la utiliza Onicamente para el encendido electrico. TOLVA DE DESCARGA LATERAL Su cortadora se envfa como abonadora. Para descargar los recortes de cesped pot el costado, siga las instrucciones de la secci6n Montaje para acoplar el canal de descarga lateral. Mantenga sus manos y pies alejados del area del canal de la plataforma de corte. Consulte la etiqueta de advertencias en la unidad. ARRANCADOR DE RETROCESO El arrancador de retroceso esta. conectado a ia variila de soporte y se ubica sobre el lado derecho de la manija inferior. Para encender la unidad col6quese detra.s de ia misma y tire de ia cuerda del arrancador de retroceso. TAPON DE GASOLINA Retire ei tap6n de gasolina para agregar combustible ai tanque de combustible. Use gasolina limpia, nueva, regular, sin plomo con un octanaje mfnimo de 87. BUJiA DE ENCENDIDO Consuite la secci6n Mantenimiento para obtener instrucciones sobre el cambio de bujfas. TAPON DE ACEITE/VARILLA DE iVlEDICI6N DEL NIVEL DE ACEITE Consulte la secci6n Mantenimiento para obtener instrucciones sobre c6mo verificar el aceite. 45
LLENADO DE GASOLINA Y ACEITE Aceite (se envia una botella junto con la unidad) Primer uso 1. Saque la varilla del nivel de aceite. 2. Con ia cortadora de cesped ubicada en suelo nivelado, utilice un embudo para vaciar todo el contenido de la botella de aceite suministrada en el motor. 3. Vuelva a colocar la varilla de Ilenado de aceite y ajQstela. Usos posteriores Use solamente un aceite detergente de alta calidad cuya clasificaci6n de servicio API sea SE SG, SH o SJ. Seleccione el grado de viscosidad SAE del aceite segt_n ia temperatura de operaci6n esperada. Cumpla ia tabla que aparece a continuaci6n. f Mils frio 5W30 32F _Mfis caliente Tabla de viscosidad del aceite Aunque los aceites de viscosidad mQltiple (5W30, 10W30, etc.) mejoran el encendido cuando ei clima estfi frio, los mismos incrementan el consumo de aceite cuando se usan a mis de 32°R Compruebe el nivel de aceite con mayor frecuencia para evitar da_os debido a que el motor trabaje con un nivel de aceite bajo. Vea la Figura 9. 1. Controle el nivel de aceite antes de cada operaci6n, asegurindose de que ia varilia de nivel de aceite no roce con las paredes interiores del tubo de Ilenado de aceite y sin enroscar ia misma. Esto daria lugar a una faisa iectura de la varilla de medici6n. Llene hasta la marca FULL (lleno) de la varilla del nivel de aceite, si es necesario. La capacidad es de aproximadamente 18 onzas. Ei ilenado en exceso hace que el motor emane mucho humo y que el rendimiento del mismo no sea bueno. 2. Vuelva a colocar la varilla de Ilenado de aceite y ajQstela. 3. Mantenga el nivei de aceite en ia marca FULL. Si pone el motor en marcha con muy poco aceite le puede causar dahos permanentes. Gasolina Tenga mucho cuidado ai trabajar con gasolina. La gasolina es sumamente inflamable y sus vapores pueden causar explosiones. Nunca I cargue combustible en ia miquina en un espacio cerrado o cuando el I motor esti caliente o en marcha. Apague cigarrillos, cigarros, pipas y I otras fuentes de combusti6n. 1. Saque la tapa del dep6sito de combustible. 2. Verifique que el recipiente dei que va a verter ia gasolina este limpio y libre de 6xido o de objetos extrahos. No use nunca gasolina que pueda estar vieja pot haber estado almacenada en su recipiente pot largos periodos. La gasolina que ha estado estacionada por un periodo superior a cuatro semanas debe considerarse vieja. El uso de combustibles con mezcla de alcohol (que se Ilaman gasohol, o que utilizan etanol o metanol) pueden atraer humedad, Io que conduce a la separaci6n y formaci6n de icidos durante ei aimacenamiento. El gas acidico puede da_ar el sistema de combustible de un motor durante el almacenamiento del mismo. f 46 J Figura 9 Para evitar problemas con el motor, se debe vaciar el sistema de combustible antes de almacenar ia miquina durante 30 dias o mils. Vacie ei tanque de nafta, encienda ei motor y dejelo funcionar hasta que las lineas de combustible y el carburador esten vacios. La siguiente temporada use combustible nuevo. Consulte las Instrucciones de ALMACENAMIENTO si desea informaci6n adicional. Nunca use productos de limpieza para el motor o el carburador en ei tanque de combustible ya que esto provocari un da_o permanente. AsegQrese de que ninguna persona aparte dei operador permanezca cerca de ia cortadora mientras arranca el motor u opera la misma. Nunca encienda el motor en espacios cerrados o en una zona con poca ventilaci6n. El escape del motor contiene mon6xido de carbono, un gas inodoro y ietai. Mantenga ias manos, los pies, el cabello y la ropa suelta alejados de las partes m6viles del motor y de la cortadora. 3. Llene el tanque de combustible s61o con gasolina normal sin plomo, limpia y fresca. No use gasolina que contenga METANOL. Vuelva a colocar la tapa de combustible en su lugar. PARA ENCENDER EL MOTOR 1. Conecte el cable de la bujia y el capuch6n de goma de la bujia. 2. El tanque de combustible deberia ser al menos 3/4 o Ileno antes del arranque. 3. Presione el bot6n del cebador 3 veces. En dias calurosos, si el motor esti caliente no Io cebe para volver a arrancar luego de una detenci6n breve. Vea la Figura 10. 4. Parado detris de ia cortadora de cesped, presione ei control de la cuchilla y sostengalo contra la barra de control superior. Vea la Figura 10. 5. Este cortacesped tiene dos sistemas iniciales separados, electricos y retroceso.
Arrancador el_ctrico: Gire la Ilave de encendido a la derecha para arrancar el motor. Sueite la ilave apenas arranque el motor. Arrancador de retroceso: Tome la manija del arrancador y saque la cuerda lentamente hasta que el motor alcance ei comienzo del ciclo de compresi6n (la cuerda tirara, un poco ma.s fuerte en este punto). Deje que la cuerda se enrolle lentamente. Tire de la cuerda con un golpe r@ido y continuo de todo ei brazo. Mantenga firme la manija del arrancador, deje que la cuerda se vuelva a enrollar lentamente. PARA DETENER EL MOTOR 1. Suelte la manija de control de la cuchilla para detener el motor y la cuchilla. 2. Desconecte el cable de la bujia y col6quelo a masa contra el poste de retenci6n para evitar que se encienda accidentalmente mientras no se esta. prestando atenci6n ai equipo. Espere a que ia cuchilla se haya detenido pot completo antes de hacer cualquier trabajo en la cortadora o de retirar el canal de descarga lateral. USO DE LA CORTADORA DE CESPED Asegurese de que el cesped esta. libre de piedras, palos, cables u otros objetos que pudiesen da_ar la cortadora o el motor. Una vez que el motor est6 funcionando, apriete el control de transrnisi6n contra la rnanija superior para propulsar la podadora. Libere el control de transrnisi6n para desengranar el sisterna de transrnisi6n. Refierase a la pagina 11 de la secci6n de Operacibn. Si golpea un objeto extra,o, detenga ei motor. Retire el cable de ia bujia, inspeccione detenidamente la cortadora para vet que no tenga da_os, y repare el dai_o antes de volver a encender y operar. El exceso de vibraci6n de la cortadora durante la operaci6n es una indicaci6n de da_o. Se debe inspeccionar y reparar la unidad Io antes posible. USO DEL COLECTOR DE CESPED Puede utilizar la bolsa colectora para juntar los recortes de cesped mientras opera la cortadora. 1. Acople el colector de cesped siguiendo las instrucciones de la secci6n de Montaje. Los recortes de cesped son recolectados en la bolsa de forma automa.tica a medida que pasa ia cortadora. 2. Opere ia cortadora hasta que ia bolsa colectora este iiena. 3. Detenga ei motor pot completo soltando ia manija de control de la cuchiiia. Compruebe que ia unidad se haya detenido por completo. 4. Mientras sostenga la boisa colectora de pasto pot medio de la manija trasera y la manija inferior, levante la bolsa colectora para sacarla dei adaptador. La puerta del canal movera, la cuerda fuera del camino de la bolsa. 5. Continue sosteniendo ia manija inferior, eleve ia parte posterior de la bolsa colectora, y liberan el manija inferior sobre un recepta.culo apropiado. La bolsa colectora se abrira, y los recortes de cesped se dispersara.n. AI volver a colocar la bolsa de cesped, asegurese de que ia parte superior de la bolsa se apoye sobre el sosten del cable entre las manijas. USO DE LA DESCARGA LATERAL Siga los pasos que se indican a continuaci6n para instaiar el canal de descarga lateral: Figura 10 / J Figura 11 1. Extraiga la tolva de abono o el adaptador de ia bolsa colectora de la unidad soltando las tuercas de mariposa. 2. Utilice siempre I galas de seguridad durante la operaci6n de la cortadora de cesped o mientras la ajusta o repara. USO COIVIO ABONADORA Para abonar el cesped, quite el colector de cesped o el canal de descarga lateral de ia maquina, y acople la toiva de abono. Refierase a la pa.gina 9 de la secci6n de Montaje. Para un abono eficiente, no corte cesped hQmedo. Si el cesped ha crecido ma.s de cuatro pulgadas, no se recomienda el uso de la cortadora como abonadora. En ese caso, use el 4.7colector de cesped para embolsar los recortes.
Detenga siempre el motor, desconecte el cable de la bujia y haga masa contra el motor antes de reaiizar cuaiquier tarea de mantenimiento a su mfiquina. RECOMENDACIONES GENERALES • Respete siempre las reglas de seguridad cuando realice tareas de mantenimiento. • La garanfia de esta cortadora no cubre elementos que han estado sujetos al mal uso o la negligencia del operador. Para recibir el reembolso total de la garantia, ei operador deberfi dar mantenimiento ai equipo tal y como se indica en este manual. • El cambio de la velocidad controlada del motor invalidarfi la garantia del motor. • Todos los ajustes deben set verificados por Io menos una vez en cada estaci6n. • Revise peri6dicamente todos los sujetadores y compruebe que esten bien ajustados. MANTENIIVIIENTO DEL MOTOR Control de la bujia de encendido Limpie la bujia y ajuste la separaci6n del electrodo a 0.030" al menos una vez pot estaci6n, reemplace cada 100 horas de funcionamiento. • Limpie el firea alrededor de la base de la bujia. No lije la bujia. Se debe limpiar las bujias mediante raspado o tallado con cepillo de alambre y iavado con un solvente comerciai. • Saque e inspeccione la bujia. Verifique la separaci6n para asegurarse de que estfi fijada en 0.030". Vea la Figura 12. • Cambie la bujia si los electrodos estfin picados, quemados o la porcelana estfi rota. IVlantenirniento del filtro de aire. No use aire presurizado o solventes para limpiar el cartucho de filtro de aire. El filtro de aire evita el ingreso al carburador de suciedad, polvo, etc. perjudiciales y evita que los mismos scan introducidos dentro del mo- tor. Adem_.s, dicho filtro es importante para la vida _til y el rendimiento del motor. No ponga nunca en funcionamiento el motor sin haber montado totalmente el filtro de aire. Limpio o sustituyen el filtro de aire cada 25 horas de la operaci6n. 1. Suelte tornillos que sostienen la tapa de filtro de aire. 2. La tapa abierta y quita el cartucho. Vea la Figura 13. 3. Instale el nuevo cartucho de filtro de aire. El cartucho debe caber bien en la base. 4. Cierre la tapa. 5. Apriete tornillos. Si no se ajustan con firmeza la caja del filtro de aire y el cuerpo del mismo pueden ingresar polvo u otros materiaies extraSos en ei motor durante su funcionamiento, generar problemas o failos del motor. 48
Inspeccione el aceite del motor Controle el nivel de aceite antes del funcionamiento. Aseg_rese de que se mantenga el nivel de aceite. 1. Extraiga la variila de medici6n de aceite y sequela con un trapo. 2. Vuelva a colocar ia variiia de medici6n sin enroscarla. Retirela y controle el nivel de aceite. El nivel deberia estar en la marca FULL (lleno) 3. Si es necesario, agregue aceite lentamente y vuelva a controlar. No Io Ilene en exceso. 4. Vuelva a colocar la varilla y ajQstela. NO io iiene en exceso. El ilenado excesivo de aceite puede hacer que el motor no arranque, io haga con dificultad, o fumar de motor. Si se supera la marca FULL (lleno) de la varilla de medici6n, drene aceite para reducir el nivel hasta que quede en la marca FULL. Cambie el aceite del motor • Use solamente un aceite detergente de alta caiidad cuya clasificaci6n de servicio API sea SE SG, SH o SJ. Seleccione el grado de viscosidad SAE del aceite segQn ia temperatura de operaci6n esperada. Consulte la secci6n Funcionamiento para vet la tabla de viscosidad. • Cambie ei aceite del motor despues de las primeras ocho horas de operaci6n, y a partir de entonces cada cincuenta horas de operaci6n. C6mo vaciar el aceite 1. Vacie el combustible del tanque haciendo funcionar el motor hasta que el tanque de combustible este vacio. AsegQrese de que la cortadora de cesped se encuentre nivelada. 2. Con el motor apagado pero todavia caliente, desconecte el cable de bujia y mantengalo alejado de la bujia. 3. incline ia cortadora de cesped, manteniendo el filtro de aire encima del petr61eo se Ilena. Vea la Figura 14. 4. Extraiga la varilia de medici6n dei motor y vierta todo el aceite contenido del cfirter del motor en un contenedor adecuado. 5. Vuelva a colocar la varilla de Ilenado de aceite y ajQstela. 8. Vuelva a colocar el cable de la bujia antes de arrancar la unidad. El aceite usado es un residuo peligroso. Elimine el aceite usado adecuadamente. No Io arroje junto con los residuos domiciliarios. Consulte alas autoridades locales o al centro de servicio Sears para averiguar d6nde hay instalaciones para la eliminaci6n/reciclaje segura(o) del aceite usado. Tap6n de aceite/varilla de medici6n del nivel de aceite Filtro de aire Figura 14 J Servicio al silenciador • Inspeccione peri6dicamente el silenciador y reemplficelo de set necesario. Los repuestos del silenciador deben set los mismos y se deben instaiar en la misma posici6n que las piezas originales. La temperatura del silenciador y de ias zonas de motor cercanas puede superar los 150o F (65oC). Evite p6ngase en contacto con esas zonas. Limpie el motor • Diariamente o antes de cada uso, limpie el cesped, la grasa o los residuos acumulados del motor. Mantenga limpios el varillaje, los resortes y los controles. Mantenga ei firea que rodea ai silenciador y detrfis dei mismo iibre de cualquier residuo combustible. • El mantenimiento del motor en condiciones limpias permite el movimiento de aire alrededor del mismo. • Las partes dei motor se deben mantener limpias para reducir el riesgo de sobrecalentamiento y combusti6n de los residuos acumulados. No use agua para limpiar ias piezas dei motor. El agua puede contaminar el sistema de combustible. Use un cepillo o un trapo seco. Ajuste del carburador El carburador de este motor no es ajustable. Velocidad del motor No altere los valores del regulador del motor ni del carburador para aumentar la velocidad del motor. Cada carburador se ajusta en ffibrica con capuch6n o placa limitadora instalado(a) sobre el tornillo de mezcla. Cualquier ajuste debe set realizado por un centro de servicio Sears o otto centro de servicio autorizado. 49
LUBRICACION f _" l Detenga siempre el motor, desconecte la bujia y haga masa contra el I motor antes de reaiizar cuaiquier tarea de mantenimiento en su ma.quina.j' Control de la cuchilla Lubrique con aceite ligero los puntos de pivote del control de la cuchilla ai menos una vez pot temporada. El control de ia cuchilla debe funcionar libremente en ambas direcciones. Vea la Figura 15. Ruedas y rueditas Lubrique ias ruedas y rueditas pot io menos una vez pot temporada con aceite ligero (o aceite para motor). Sin embargo, si las ruedas se quitan por cualquier raz6n, debe lubricar la superficie del perno del eje y la superficie interna de ia rueda con aceite ligero. Vea la Figura 15. Siga los pasos que aparecen debajo para realizar esta tarea. 1. Desconecte el cable de la bujia. Drene la gasolina de la cortadora o coloque un trozo de pla.stico debajo del tap6n de Ilenado del combustible. 2. incline la cortadora de cesped de modo que quede apoyada sobre al alojamiento, mantenga el silenciador de costado hacia abajo. Sostenga firmemente la cortadora. Nunca incline ia cortadora de cesped ma.s de 900 en ninguna direcci6n y no deje la unidad inclinada. Se puede filtrar aceite dentro de la parte _super or de motor y causar prob emas de arranque. 3. Raspe y iimpie ia parte inferior de la plataforma mediante el uso de una herramienta adecuada. No la rode con agua. IMPORTANTE: No utilice una lavadora a presi6n o manguera de jardin para limpiar su unidad. Pueden producir daSos a los rodamientos o al motor. El uso de agua acortara, la vida Otil de la ma.quina y reducira, su capacidad de servicio. 4. Vueiva a colocar ia cortadora de cesped sobre sus ruedas en el suelo. Si puso un pla.stico debajo del tap6n de Ilenado de combustible asegQrese de sacarlo en este momento. Figura 16 J CAIVIBIO DE LA ALETA TRASERA Para cambiar la aleta trasera, proceda de la siguiente manera: 1. Corte el extremo piano de la varilla de alambre que la sujeta a la plataforma. Vea la Figura 16. 2. Instale ia nueva aieta y ia nueva variiia en ia plataforma, doblando los extremos de la nueva varilla para sujetarla a la plataforma. 50
AJUSTE DEL CABLE DE LA PALANCA DE CAiVIBIOS Puede set necesario realizar un ajuste peri6dico del cable de cambios de seis velocidades debido al desgaste normal del cable. El ajuste es necesario si las seis velocidades no funcionan bien. La mensula ajustable del cable se iocaliza sobre el lado izquierdo de la cortadora de cesped junto al motor. Vea la Figura 17. 1. Ponga en marcha el motor y coloque la palanca de cambios en la posici6n de sexta velocidad. 2. Detenga el motor y desconecte el cable de la bujia y conectelo a tierra contra el motor. 3. Afloje la tuerca hexagonal que sujeta la mensula ajustable del cable. Vea ia Figura 17. 4. Empuje hacia atra.s la mensula ajustable del cable. 5. Ajustelatuerca hexagonal. CUIDADO DE LA CUCHILLA las manos usando un par de guantes para trabajo rudo o un trapo para sostener la cuchilla. Inspeccione peri6dicamente el adaptador de la cuchiiia en busca de rajaduras, especialmente cuando golpee un objeto extra_o. Realice los reemplazos que resulten necesarios. Siga los pasos que aparecen debajo para reaiizar el mantenimiento de la cuchilla. 1. Desconecte el capuch6n del cable de la bujia. Gire la cortadora de cesped sobre el costado y compruebe que el filtro de aire y el carburador queden mirando hacia arriba. 2. Saque el perno y el soporte de campana de ia cuchiiia que sostienen la cuchilla y el adaptador de la misma ai cig0e_ai del motor. Vea la Figura 18. NOTA: AI quitar ia cuchiila, el adaptador de ia cuchilla, etc., tenga cuidado de no extraer o aflojar piezas sobre el mismo que esten asociadas con la polea dei motor. 3. Saque la cuchilla y el adaptador dei cig0e_al. Vea la Figura 18. 4. Saque ia cuchilia del adaptador para comprobar el equilibrio. Balancee la cuchilla sobre un destornillador de eje redondo para inspeccionarla. Saque metal dei iado pesado hasta que quede bien equilibrada. Cuando afile la cuchilla, siga el a.ngulo original de la mueia como guia. Afiie cada horde de corte por iguai para mantener el balance de la cuchilla. Si ia cuchilia esta. desequiiibrada generara, vibraciones excesivas cuando I rote a aitas velocidades. Puede producir da_os a ia cortadora de cesped I y se puede romper, causando asi lesiones personales. | 5. Lubrique ei cig0e_al dei motor y ia superficie interna del adaptador de ia cuchilla con aceite iigero. Deslice el adaptador de la cuchilla sobre el cig0e_al del motor. Instale ia cuchiiia en ei adaptador con el lado marcado "Bottom" (inferior) (o con el numero de parte) hacia ei piso cuando ia cortadora de cesped esta. en posici6n de funcionamiento. Aseg0rese que la cuchilla quede alineada y asentada en ias bridas del adaptador. 6. Coloque el soporte de campana de la cuchilla en ia misma. Para garantizar ia operaci6n segura de la cortadora de cesped, revise peri6dicamente el perno de la cuchilla para determinar siesta, bien ajustado. CUIDADO DE LA CORREA NOTA: Para cambiar la correa de paseo de la cortadora de cesped es necesario extraer varios componentes. Solicite a un centro autorizado de servicio Sears que realice el reemplazo de la correa. 51
CAIVIBIO DE LA BATERiA Las baterias contienen _cido sulfOrico que puede causar quernadu- ras. No ponga en corto cirouito ni rnutile las baterias de ninguna rnanera. No coloque las baterias sobre fuego dado que pueden _exp otar o ern t r mater a es t6x cos. 1. Afloje las perillas en estrella que sujetan las manijas inferior y superior y con cuidado doble la manija superior hacia la manija inferior tai come se muestra en ia Figura 19. 2. Retire los dos tornillos que sujetan ia cubierta de ia bateria ai alojamiento de la bateria y col6quelos al costado. Vea la Figura 19. 3. Abra ia cubierta de ia bateria, extraiga los conductores positive y negative de ia bateria, saque la bateria y coloque una nueva. Conecte el conductor positive ai lade positive del paquete de bateria, luego conecte el lade negative. NOTA: La bateria que tiene puede diferir ligeramente de la que se muestra en la Figura 20. Consulte la lista de piezas. IMPORTANTE: Cuando cambie el paquete de bateria en el panel de la manija, el paquete de bateria debe colocarse con el terminal positivo hacia el lade izquierdo y el terminal negative hacia el lade derecho del panel (el terminal positive estfi mils cerca de la Ilave de contacto). Vea la Figura 20. El cambio incorrecto del paquete de bateria causa daSos graves. 4. Vuelva a instalar la cubierta del alojamiento de la bateria y fijela con los dos tornillos que sac6 antes, asegurfindose de colocar a presi6n el conducto de alambre a la izquierda en su lugar en el alojamiento. 5. Doble las manijas hacia arriba y apriete la perillas en estrella. No quite el paquete de baterias del alojarniento del arrancador el_ctrico por ninguna raz6n que no sea el reernplazo. Figura 19 J Terminal positivo m Terminal negativo Carga de la bateria La bateria contiene fluido corrosivo y material t6xico; se debe rnanipular con cuidado y rnantener a los niSos alejados. No perfore, desensarnble, rnutile o prenda fuego a la bateria. Durante la carga o descarga se podrian ernitir gases explosivos. Utilicela en un &tea bien ventilada, lejos de fuentes de ignici6n. NOTA: La clavija de conexi6n especialmente diseSada del cargador Onicamente encaja en la caja de las baterias. 1. Enchufe el cargador de ia bateria dentro del orificio en la parte inferior del alojamiento de la bateria. Vea la Figura 21. 2. Inserte el enchufe del cargador de baterias en un tomacorriente residenciai comOn de 120 voltios. Cargue la bateria de 8 a 10 horas antes de usar ia unidad per primera vez. Si no io hace se puede reducir ia duraci6n de ia bateria. No cargue pot mils de 12 horas, La bateria Onicamente necesitarfi cargarse en el ajuste iniciai y luego de periodos prolongados sin use. 3. IMPORTANTE: Siempre conecte el conductor dei cargador en del paquete de baterias en primer iugar, y iuego inserte el enchufe del cargador de baterias en un tomacorriente residenciai estfindar de 120 voltios. Siga esta secuencia siempre que cargue la bateria. Utilice Qnicamente el cargador de baterias suministrado con esta cortadora de cesped. Cambio del fusible El circuito dei arrancador electrico y ia bateria estfin protegidos pot un fusible de 40 amperes. Si ei fusible se quema, el arrancador electrico no funcionarfi. Si ia unidad no se enciende con ei arrancador electrico, siga los siguientes pasos para verificar el fusible que estfi en el alojamiento de la bateria: 1. Abra ia cubierta de ia bateria segQn se muestra en Cambio de bateria. Vea ia Figura 19. 2. Retire el fusible del enchufe e inspeccione tal como se muestra en ia Figura 22. Si estfi quemado, reemplace por un fusible de autom6viles estfindar de 40 amperes. 3. Coloque con cuidado los cables dentro del alojamiento, cierre la tapa de la bateria y doble la manija superior nuevamente en su lugar. PROGRAIVlA DE iVlANTENIlVIIENTO • A Antes de realizar cuaiquier tipo de mantenimiento o servicio, desenganche todos los controles y detenga el motor. Espere a que se detengan comple- tamente todas las piezas m6viles. Desconecte el cable de la bujia y p6ngalo haciendo masa contra el motor para evitar que se encienda accidentaimente. Nunca almacene la cortadora de cesped con combustible en el tanque en un espacio cerrado o en fireas con poca ventilaci6n, donde los gases dei combustible puedan alcanzar el fuego, chispas o una luz piloto como ia que tienen algunos homos, calentadores de agua, secadores de ropa o aigOn otto dispositivo a gas. PREPARACION DEL MOTOR El equipo almacenado con el combustible puede enranciarse cuando almacenado mils de 30 dias. El combustible a_ejo hace que ficido y dep6sitos de goma se forme en el sistema de combustible o en partes de carburador esenciaies. Estabilizador de combustible de mezcla con combustible en tanque o contenedor de almacenaje. Motor dirigido durante un tiempo corto para poner en circulaci6n estabilizador por carburador y motor. El motor y ei combustible con el estabilizador pueden set aimacenados hasta 24 meses. IMPORTANTE: Si el estabilizador de combustible no es usado, usted tiene que drenar la gasolina del equipo antes del almacenaje. Realice el siguiente antes del almacenaje a largo plazo del equipo: 1. Mientras ei motor es todavia caliente, petr61eo de cambio. 2. Quite la bujia y vierta aproximadamente 1/2 la onz. (15 ml) del nuevo petr61eo de motor en la cavidad de bujia que pone el petr61eo en el cilindro. Sustituya la bujia bien. 3. Cuerda de juez de salida de tir6n despacio. Este gira el cigQe_al del motor y distribuye el petr61eo por el motor. 4. ASada el estabilizador de combustible o drene el combustible del motor. 5. Suciedad limpia y escombros de cumbre y todas las fireas airededor de motor. PREPARACION DE LA CORTADORA DE CO'SPED • Limpie y iubrique la cortadora como se describe en las instrucciones de lubricaci6n. • No utilice una lavadora a presi6n ni una manguera de jardin para limpiar su unidad. • Cubra la cuchilla de la cortadora con grasa para chasis para impedir la oxidaci6n. • Almacene la unidad en una zona limpia y seca. No la almacene cerca de materiales corrosivos como pot ejemplo fertilizantes. Cuando almacene cuaiquier tipo de equipo motorizado en un gaip6n de dep6sito met_.iico o con poca ventilaci6n, tenga especial cuidado de realizarle un tratamiento antioxidante al equipo. Use aceite ligero o silicona para recubrir ei equipo, especialmente los cables y partes m6viles de su cortadora antes de aimacenarla. Bateria La bateria debe guardarse con carga completa. El aimacenamiento prolongado de una bateria descargada reducirfi la vida Otil y la capacidad de la bateria. 6. Tienda en un firea limpia, seca. 54
