This warranty applies for only 90 days from the date of purchase if this product is ever used for commercial or rental purposes. This warranty covers ONLY defects in material and workmanship. GENERAL OPERATION ,, Read this operator's manual carefully in its entirety before attempting to assemble this machine. Read, understand, and follow all instructions on the machine and in the manual(s) before operation. Be completely familiar with the controls and the proper use of this machine before operating it. Keep this manual in a safe place for future and regular reference and for ordering replacement parts. ,, This machine is a precision piece of power equipment, not a plaything. Therefore, exercise extreme caution at all times. Your unit has been designed to perform one job: to mow grass. Do not use it for any other purpose. ,, Never allow children under 14 years old to operate this machine. Children 14 years old and over should read and understand the instruc- tions in this manual and should be trained and supervised by a parent. Only responsible individuals who are familiar with these rules of safe operation should be allowed to use this machine. ,, Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used. Remove all stones, sticks, wire, bones, toys and other foreign objects which could be tripped over or picked up and thrown by the blade. Thrown objects can cause serious personal injury. Plan your mowing pattern to avoid discharge of material toward roads, sidewalks, bystanders and the like. Also, avoid discharging material against a wall or obstruction which may cause discharged material to ricochet back toward the operator. ,, To help avoid blade contact or a thrown object injury, stay in operator zone behind handles and keep children, bystanders, helpers, and pets at least 75 feet from mower while it is in operation. Stop machine if anyone enters area. ,, Always wear safety glasses or safety goggles during operation and while performing an adjustment or repair to protect your eyes. Thrown objects which ricochet can cause serious injury to the eyes. ,, Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and close-fitting slacks and shirts. Shirts and pants that cover the arms and legs and steel-toed shoes are recommended. Never operate this machine in bare feet, sandals, slippery or light weight (e.g. canvas) shoes. ,, Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts or under cutting deck. Contact with blade can amputate hands and feet. ,, A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade contact or thrown object injuries. ,, Many injuries occur as a result of the mower being pulled over the foot during a fall caused by slipping or tripping. Do not hold on to the mower if you are falling; release the handle immediately. ,, Never pull the mower back toward you while you are walking. If you must back the mower away from a wall or obstruction first look down and behind to avoid tripping and then follow these steps: a. Step back from mower to fully extend your arms. b. Be sure you are well balanced with sure footing. c. Pull back slowly, no more than half way towards you. d. Repeat these steps as needed. ,, Do not operate the mower while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. ,, Do not engage the self-propelled mechanism on units so equipped while starting engine. ,, The blade control handle is a safety device. Never attempt to bypass its operation. Doing so makes the safety device inoperative and may result in personal injury through contact with the rotating blade. The blade control handle must operate easily in both directions and automatically return to the disengaged position when released. ,, Never operate the mower in wet grass. Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. If you feel you are losing your footing, release the blade control handle immediately and the blade will stop rotating within three seconds. ,, Mow only in daylight or good artificial light. Walk, never run. ,, Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives, walks or roads. 3
• If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally, stop the engine and check immediately for the cause. Vibration is generally a warning of trouble. • Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes to a complete stop before removing the grass catcher or unclogging the chute. The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few seconds after the engine is shut off. Never place any part of the body in the blade area until you are sure the blade has stopped rotating. • Never operate mower without proper trailshield, discharge cover, grass catcher, blade control handle, or other safety protective devices in place and working. Never operate mower with damaged safety devices. Failure to do so can result in personal injury. • Muffler and engine become hot and can cause a burn. Do not touch. • Only use parts and accessories made for this machine by manufacturer. Failure to do so can result in personal injury. SLOPE OPERATION Slopes are a major factor related to slip and fall accidents which can result in severe injury. Operation on slopes requires extra caution. If you feel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it. For your safety, use the slope guide included as part of this manual to measure slopes before operating this unit on a sloped or hilly area. If the slope is greater than 15 degrees, do not mow it. Do: • Mow across the face of slopes; never up and down. Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes. • Watch for holes, ruts, rocks, hidden objects, or bumps which can cause you to slip or trip. Tall grass can hide obstacles. • Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. If you feel you are losing your balance, release the blade control handle immediately, and the blade will stop rotating within 3 seconds. Do Not: • Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches or embankments, where you could lose your footing or balance. • Do not mow slopes greater than 15 degrees as shown on the slope gauge. • Do not mow on wet grass. Unstable footing could cause slipping. SERVICE Safe Handling Of Gasoline: • To avoid personal injury or property damage use extreme care in handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive. Serious personal injury can occur when gasoline is spilled on yourself or your clothes which can ignite. • Wash your skin and change clothes immediately. • Use only an approved gasoline container. • Never fill containers inside a vehicle or on a truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner. Always place containers on the ground away from your vehicle before filling. • Remove gas-powered equipment from the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground. If this is not possible, then refuel such equipment on a trailer with a portable container, rather than from a gasoline dispenser nozzle. • Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the fuel tank or container opening at all times until fueling is complete. Do not use a nozzle lock-open device. • Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other sources of ignition. • Never fuel machine indoors because flammable vapors will accumulate in the area. • Never remove gas cap or add fuel while engine is hot or running. Allow engine to cool at least two minutes before refueling. • Never over fill fuel tank. Fill tank to no more than V2 inch below bottom of filler neck to provide for fuel expansion. • Replace gasoline cap and tighten securely. • If gasoline is spilled, wipe it off the engine and equipment. Move unit to another area. Wait 5 minutes before starting engine. • Never store the machine or fuel container near an open flame, spark or pilot light as on a water heater, space heater, furnace, clothes dryer, or other gas appliances. • To reduce fire hazard, keep mower free of grass, leaves, or other debris build-up. Clean up oil or fuel spillage and remove any fuel soaked debris. • Allow a mower to cool at least 5 minutes before storing. General Service: • Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas. • Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make certain the blade and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine to prevent unintended starting. • Check the blade and engine mounting bolts at frequent intervals for proper tightness. Also, visually inspect blade for damage (e.g., bent, cracked, worn) Replace blade with the original equipment manufac- ture's (O.E.M.) blade only, listed in this manual. Use of parts which do not meet the original equipment specifications may lead to improper performance and compromise safety! • Mower blades are sharp and can cut. Wrap the blade or wear gloves, and use extra caution when servicing them. • Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight to be sure the equipment is in safe working condition. • Never tamper with safety devices. Check their proper operation regularly. • After striking a foreign object, stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine. Thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage. Repair the damage before starting and operating the mower. • Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment while the engine is running. • Grass catcher components, discharge cover, and trailshield are subject to wear and damage which could expose moving parts or allow objects to be thrown. For safety protection, frequently check components and replace immediately with original equipment manufacturer's (O.E.M.) parts only, listed in this manual. Use of parts which do not meet the original equipment specifications may lead to improper performance and compromise safety! • Do not change the engine governor setting or overspeed the engine. The governor controls the maximum safe operating speed of the engine. • Maintain or replace safety labels, as necessary. • Observe proper disposal laws and regulations. Improper disposal of fluids and materials can harm the environment. 4

IMPORTANT: This unit is shipped with oil in the engine. After assembly, see page 12 for fuel and oil details. IMPORTANT: Reference to right or left side of the mower is observed from the operating position. The mowing deck is capable of throwing objects. Failure to operate the mower without the discharge chute in the proper operating posi- tion could result in serious personal injury and/or property damage. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent unintended starting. LOOSE PARTS IN CARTON The following items are packaged in a bag: Operator's Manual, Oil drain hose, Water hose coupler, Engine Manual TOOLS NEEDED FOR ASSEMBLY A set of adjustable wrenches and tire gauge REMOVING THE UNIT FROM THE CRATE 1. Cut straps, if present, securing unit to pallet. Leave unit on pallet during handle assembly. 2. Remove any protective packaging and plastic tie straps. 3. Use the deck height lever (see "Know your Mower" section) to raise the cutting deck to its highest position. ASSEMBLING THE HANDLE 1. Remove lower star knobs and carriage screws from lower handle, Figure 1. Figure 1 2. Pivot upper handle into operating position, Figure 2. Be careful not to bend or kink the cables when pivoting the handle. J Figure 2 3. Install carriage screws and knobs removed earlier. 4. Tighten the upper and lower star knobs and carriage screws to secure the upper handle to the lower handle, Figure 2. 5. After assembling the handle, to safely remove unit from pallet, first cut off cardboard and remove screws to free the mower from the crate. REMOVING THE CHUTE HOLDER The chute holder must be removed and discarded before operating the mower. 1. Locate the chute holder which secures the discharge chute in a vertical position, Figure 3. f 8 Figure 3
2. Pull chute back towards the engine. While holding the chute with one hand, remove the chute holder using your other hand. 3. Carefully lower the chute against the deck and discard the holder. INSTALLING THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER 1. Remove the 5/16-18 screw and the lock nut that hold the shift lever to the shift lever plate, Figure 4. f 4 / Figure 4 J 2. Remove the remaining screw and nut from the lower shift lever plate, Figure 4. 3. Position the upper shift lever into a vertical position aligning the holes in the lever to the holes in the shift plate, Figure 5. 4. Secure the lever to the plate using the two screws and two nuts removed earlier, Figure 5. FINAL ADJUSTMENTS Rear Tire Pressure Never exceed the maximum inflation pressure shown on the sidewall of tire. The recommended operating rear tire pressure is approximately 20 psi for the rear tires. Check the tire pressure periodically and maintain equal pressure in both rear tires at all times. IMPORTANT: Refer to the tire sidewall for exact tire manufacturer's recommended or maximum psi. Do not overinflate. Uneven tire pres- sure could cause the cutting deck to mow unevenly. / Figure 5 9

Know how to stop the machine and disengage the controls. The operation of any lawn mower can result in foreign objects being thrown into the eyes, which can damage your eyes severely. Always wear safety glasses while operating the mower, or while performing any adjustments or repairs on it. THROTTLE/CHOKE CONTROL LEVER iMPORTANT: When operating the mower with the cutting deck engaged, be certain that the throttle/ choke control lever is always in the fast position. This lever is used to adjust engine speeds, to apply the engine choke, and to stop the engine. Always run engine at fast speed setting for best mower performance. CHOKE: Use when starting a cold engine FAST: Use during mower operation. SLOW: Use when idling engine. STOP: Stops the engine. Choke Fast Slow/Idle Engine Off Be sure no one other than the operator is standing near the lawn mower while starting engine or operating mower. Never run engine indoors or in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas. Keep hands, feet, hair and loose clothing away from any moving parts on engine and lawn mower. GAS CAP Remove the gas cap to add fuel to the fuel tank. Use clean, fresh, regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 85 octane. Turn the engine off and let the engine cool at least two minutes before removing the gas cap. DECK HEIGHT LEVER Use this lever to adjust the cutting height. To use, move the lever to the left, then place the lever in the notch best suited for your application. 10
BLADE CONTROL The blade control is used to engage the mower deck. To engage this control, press and hold the lever against the handlebar grip. To stop the blades, release the blade control. Always disengage the blade control before starting the engine. This helps to ensure that the blades will not start turning when the engine starts. DRIVE CONTROL The drive control is used to engage and disengage drive to the wheels. To engage this control, squeeze the drive control against the handlebar grip. To stop the drive, release the drive control. IMPORTANT: Always release the drive control before changing speeds. GEAR SHIFT LEVER Use this lever to select any of four forward ground speeds, neutral, or reverse. Recoil Starter The recoil starter is used to pull-start the engine. Oil Drain Valve Use the oil drain valve to drain oil from the engine. Refer to the Maintenance section for instructions. Air Cleaner Handle The air cleaner handle is used to gain access to the air cleaner. The air cleaner cartridge can be removed and cleaned or replaced. Refer to the Maintenance section for details. Forward There are four forward speeds. Position one (1) is the slowest and position four (4) is the fastest. Reverse To select reverse, put the lever in the Reverse (R) position. Neutral Place the lever in neutral (N) before starting the mower, and when the mower is not in use. In addition, the mower can be manually pushed or pulled by placing the gear shift lever into N (neutral) position and pressing the drive control against the handlebar grip. If cartridge or cover are installed incorrectly, serious injury or death could result from backfire. Do not attempt to start your engine with them removed. Spark Plug/Spark Plug Wire Refer to the Maintenance section for instructions on spark plug replacement. Oil Cap/Dipstick Refer to the Maintenance section for instructions on checking the oil. To avoid damaging the transmission, do not shift gears when the mower is moving. Release drive control before shifting gears. Look behind the mower before and during reverse operation. Stop the mower blades before operating in reverse. 11

GAS AND OIL FILL-UP Gas Fill Use of Alcohol blended fuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation and forma- tion of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage. To avoid engine problems, the fuel system should be emptied before storage for 30 days or longer. Drain the gas tank, start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty. Use fresh I fuel next season. See STORAGE Instructions for additional informa- [tion. )ermanent damage may occur. IMPORTANT: The mower is shipped without gas in the fuel tank. • Never fill the fuel tank completely. Fill the tank to no more than 1/2-inch below bottom of filler neck to provide space for fuel expansion. • Always use clean, fresh, unleaded grade automotive gasoline. Fill the fuel tank outdoors and use a funnel or spout to prevent spilling. Make sure that the container from which you pour the gasoline is clean and free from rust or other foreign particles. Make sure to wipe off any spilled fuel before starting the engine. • At the end of the job, empty the fuel tank if the mower is not going to be used for 30 days or longer. Store gasoline in a clean container and keep the cap in place on the container. See STOR- AGE instructions for additional information. Be sure no one other than the operator is standing near the lawn mower while starting engine or operating mower. Never run engine indoors or in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas. Keep hands, feet, hair, and loose clothing away from any moving parts Oil Fill IMPORTANT: The mower is shipped with motor oil in the engine; however, you MUST check the oil level before operating. Oil should be changed once after the first two hours of operation and every 25 hours of operation thereafter. Use the grade of engine oil specified in the Maintenance section. . 2. Remove the oil fill cap/dipstick from the oil fill tube. Check that the level of oil is up to the FULL mark on the dipstick. If needed, pour oil slowly into the oil fill tube until a FULL oil level is achieved. 3. Replacethe oil fill cap/dipstick. STARTING THE MOWER 1. Release all controls on the mower to prevent wheels or blades from rotating. 2. Move gear shift lever to neutral (N) position. 3. Move the throttle/choke control lever fully upward to choke setting I',1 to start a cold engine or to fast (rabbit) setting _ to start a warm engine. 4. To start engine using recoil starter: a. Stand on left side (as viewed from behind handlebars) of ma- chine. Be sure your feet are safely away from the underside of the mower deck and all mower controls are released. b. Grasp starter rope handle and pull slowly until rope pulls slightly harder. Let rope rewind slowly. Then pull rope with a rapid, full arm stroke. Let rope return slowly. If engine fails to start after three pulls, repeat instructions (try setting throttle at fast setting). c. When engine starts, operate in fast throttle setting _lf (move throttle/choke control lever from choke setting to fast setting). Look behind the mower before and during reverse operation. Stop the mower blades before operating in reverse. If you strike a foreign object, stop the engine. Remove wire from the spark plug, thoroughly inspect mower for any damage, and repair damage before restarting and operating. Extensive vibration of mower during operation is an indication of damage. The unit should be promptly inspected and repaired. 12
Look behind the mower before and during reverse operation. Stop the mower blades before operating in reverse. USING THE MOWER IMPORTANT: Always release the drive control before changing speeds. Refer to "Know your Mower" section for mower control details. Be sure lawn is clear of stones, sticks, wire, or other objects which could damage lawn mower or engine. Such objects could be accidently thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator and others. For best results, do not cut wet grass and never cut off more than one-third of the total length of the grass. 1. Once the engine is running, slowly squeeze the drive control against the upper handle to propel the unit. To activate the cutting blades, squeeze the blade control against the upper handle. 2. To change gears, release the drive control lever and move the gear shift lever to the desired setting. When first practicing with the mower, put the lever in No. 1 position. Select forward speeds according to mowing conditions and terrain. Use slower speeds on rough terrain or when grass is heavy or thick. The forward speed can be increased on smooth terrain or if the grass cover is light. Allow the wheels to stop completely before shifting from one speed into another. IMPORTANT: Be aware that when engaging the drive control lever with the gear shift lever in 3rd or 4th gear, the power and torque generated may cause the unit to lurch forward. To avoid this, slowly squeeze the drive control lever against the upper handle. . To stop the blades, release the blade control. To stop the drive control to the wheels, release the drive control. STOPPING THE MOWER . 2. Release blade and drive control to stop wheels and deck blades. Move throttle/choke control lever down to slow (turtle) position. Whenever possible, gradually reduce engine speed before stopping engine. 3. Move throttle/choke control lever all the way down to stop position. 4. Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and ground against the engine. MOVING THE MOWER WITHOUT ENGINE POWER The mower can be manually pushed or pulled by placing the gear shift lever into N (neutral) position and pressing the drive control against the handlebar grip. MULCHING OR SIDE-DISCHARGE MOWING You can use the mower either as a mulching mower or as a side- discharge mower. To use the mulching feature, insert the mulch plug as described below. Remove the mulch plug to side-discharge grass clippings. The mulch plug is designed to keep the discharge chute raised up while mowing. When the plug is removed, the discharge chute will lower itself for side-discharge mowing. Before installing or removing mulch plug, stop engine, wait for parts to stop moving, and disconnect spark plug wire. To install or remove mulch plug: 1. Stop the engine and wait for all parts to stop moving. 2. Disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Figure 8 3. To install the mulch plug, insert the right-side tab (A) of the plug into the bracket on the deck, Figure 8. 4. Insert the cover into the discharge opening (B), Figure 8. 5. After the mulch plug has been placed into the deck opening, push the plug towards the rear of the mower (C) to fit the plug properly into the opening, Figure 8. 6. To remove the plug, slide the cover to the right (front of mower) to disengage the slot from the mower deck and then pry the left-side of the cover out and off. Keep hands and feet away from the discharge opening of the cutting deck. 13
Always stop engine, disconnect spark plug, and ground against engine before performing any type of maintenance on the mower. GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS Always observe safety rules when performing any type of maintenance on the mower. The warranty on this lawn mower does not cover items that have been subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receive full value from warranty, operator must maintain the lawn mower as instructed in this manual. • Changing of engine-governed speed will void engine warranty. • All adjustments should be checked at least once each season. • Periodically check all fasteners and make sure they are tight. ENGINE MAINTENANCE Checking the Spark Plug Clean spark plug and reset the electrode gap to 0.030" at least once a season; replace every 100 hours of operation. 1. Clean area around the spark plug base. Do not sandblast spark plug. Spark plug should be cleaned by scraping or wire brushing and washing with a commercial solvent 2. Remove and inspect the spark plug. Check gap to make sure it is set at .030". See Figure 9. 3. Replace the spark plug if electrodes are pitted, burned, or the porcelain is cracked. Electrode l Porcelain .030 inch (.76 ram) gap Figure 9 J Servicing the Air Cleaner If filters, or covers are not installed correctly serious injury or death could result from backfire. Do not attempt to start the engine with them removed. Do not use pressurized air or solvents to clean the air cleaner cartridge. Clean or replace the air cleaner every 25 hours of operation. 1. Carefully remove air cleaner cartridge and pre-cleaner (if equipped) from the blower housing. 4. Clean the base of the air cleaner cartridge carefully to prevent debris from entering the engine. 5. Place the pre-cleaner, if equipped, and cartridge back into the blower housing. The cartridge must be placed securely into position. 6. Align tabs on cover with slots in blower housing and replace the cover. 14
Changing the Engine Oil The oil in the engine should be changed every 25 hours of operation. 1. To gain access to the oil drain valve on the engine, the right handle brace tube should be pivoted forward. a. Remove the upper star knob and carriage screw on the right side of the handle, Figure 11. b. Pivot the brace tube towards the front of the mower to allow room to connect the oil drain hose to the oil drain valve, Figure 11. \\ Drain Valve Figure 2. Route the opposite end of the hose into an appropriate oil collection container with a capacity great enough to collect the used oil. 5. Release the valve by pressing the two tabs inward while pulling the valve out. The oil will begin to drain out of the engine. 6. After the oil has finished draining, press the two tabs inward and push the oil drain valve back in to lock the valve closed. Remove the hose, and re-cap the end of the oil drain valve to keep debris from entering the drain port. 7. Refill the engine with new motor oil until the oil level on the dipstick reads FULL. Replace the oil fill cap/dipstick. 8. Pivot the right handle brace tube back into position. Align the middle hole in the brace tube with the hole in the handle. Secure with the star knob and carriage screw removed earlier. Only use high quality detergent oil rated with API service clas- sification SF or SG. Select the oil's SAE viscosity grade according to your expected operating temperature, Figure 13. Although multi-viscosity oils (5W30, 10W30 etc.) improve starting in cold weather, these multi-viscosity oils will result in increased oil con- sumption when used above 32°E Check your engine oil level more frequently to avoid possible engine damage from running low on oil. Failure I to follow this instruction could result in personal injury or property [damage. REMOVING THE BELT COVER The belt cover must be removed to perform several maintenance and service procedures. Follow the instructions below to remove the belt cover. 1. Stop engine, wait for all parts to stop moving, and disconnect spark plug wire. 2. Remove the three screws and washers holding the cover to the frame, Figure 14. Figure 14 3. Remove the belt cover. 4. To reinstall the belt cover, place the cover in position and fasten using three screws and washers removed earlier. Do not operate unit without belt cover installed. Failure to follow this instruction could result in personal injury or property damage. REMOVING THE MOWER DECK When servicing the underside of the mower deck for any reason, the cutting deck should first be removed. Follow the instructions below to remove the cutting deck: 1. Stop the engine, wait for all parts to stop moving, and disconnect spark plug wire. 2. Release all mower controls. 3. Remove belt cover as instructed under"Removing the Belt Cover." 4. Use the deck height lever to move the cutting deck to its highest position. 5. Place small wooden blocks under the deck. 6. Use the deck height lever to lower the deck so that it rests upon the wooden blocks. 7. Looking at the cutting deck from the left side of the mower, locate the hairpin clip that secures the deck support rod on the rear Idt side of the deck, Figure 15. 8. Remove the hairpin clip that secures the support rod, and care- fully remove the deck support from the deck lift arm, Figure 15. Figure 15 9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 on the mower's right side. When complete, all four hairpin clips should be removed. 10. Push the cutting deck to the left to unhook the lift assembly from the deck. 11. 12. 13. Use the deck height lever to raise the cutting deck to its highest position. Remove the wooden blocks from under the deck. Remove the drive belt as instructed under "Replacing the Drive Belt" instructions. 14. Slide the cutting deck towards the rear of the unit. 15. LUBRICATION Pivot Points & Linkage Lubricate all the pivot points on the drive system and lift linkage at least once a season, or every 25 hours of operation, with light oil. Rear Wheels The rear wheels should be removed from the axles once a season. Lubricate the axles and the rims well with an all-purpose grease before reinstalling them. Front Wheel Bearings Grease fittings are located on each caster wheel and on the frame above each front caster wheel, Figure 17. Lubricate these areas using a grease gun after every 50 hours of mower operation. You will not need to use the grease fitting on the opposite side of the wheel. 5. CLEANING THE ENGINE AND DECK Do not use a pressure washer to clean the mower. It may cause damage to electrical components, spindles, pulleys, bearings, or the engine. Any fuel or oil spilled on the machine should be wiped off promptly. Do not allow debris to accumulate around any components on the mower. Cleaning the Engine Engine parts should be kept clean to reduce the risk of overheating and ignition of debris. This is especially important if cutting tall grass. Cleaning the Cutting Deck Deck Wash System Use the Deck Wash System to rinse grass clippings from the under- side of the deck and to prevent the buildup of corrosive chemicals. 1. Thread the hose coupler (packaged in a bag with the Operator's Manual) onto the end of your garden hose, Figure 18. Point the discharge chute away from any objects or persons. Start the mower and engage the blades (press and hold the blade control against the handlebar grip) for a minimum of two minutes. Do not engage the drive control. When complete, disengage the blade control (release the blade control) and turn the engine off. Turn the water off and detach the hose coupler from the water port. 17
Never exceed the maximum inflation pressure shown on the sidewall of tire. REAR TIRE PRESSURE The recommended operating rear tire pressure is approximately 20 psi for the rear tires. Check the tire pressure periodically and maintain equal pressure in both rear tires at all times. IMPORTANT: Refer to the tire sidewall for exact tire manufacturer's recommended or maximum psi. Do not overinflate. Uneven tire pres- sure could cause the cutting deck to mow unevenly. REPLACING THE TRAILING SHIELD . If a screw is present at each side of the trailing shield, remove the two screws. Bend (bow) the trailing shield inward on each side to release tabs from the holes in the mower frame, Figure 19. . . \_ i i Figure 19 Replace with new trailing shield by bending the shield to allow each tab to fit into holes in mower frame. Replace the two screws (if screws were used to hold the trailing shield to the mower frame). SERVICING THE CUTTING BLADES Be sure to shut the engine off and disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine to prevent unintended starting before removing the cutting blade(s) for sharpening or replacement. Protect your hands by using heavy gloves or a rag to grasp the cutting blade. Periodically inspect the blade spindles for cracks or damage, espe- cially if you strike a foreign object. Replace immediately if damaged. Mower blades are sharp. When working near blades, wear heavy leather gloves or wrap blades in thick rags to protect yourself from the sharp edges. Blade Removal F . Remove the deck from beneath the mower and gently flip the deck over to expose its underside. Refer to "Removing the Mower Deck" for instructions. Place a 2x4 block of wood approximately 8.5" long between the deck housing and the cutting blade to act as a stabilizer, Figure 20. \ Remove flange nut to release blade Use block of wood to stabilize blade. Blade Sharpening iMPORTANT: If any metal separation is present, replace the blades with new ones. To properly sharpen the cutting blades, remove equal amounts of metal from both ends of the blades along the cutting edges, parallel to the trailing edge, at a 250 to 300 angle, Figure 21. J Figure 21 It is important that each cutting blade edge be ground equally to maintain proper blade balance. A poorly balanced blade will cause excessive vibration and may cause damage to the mower and result in personal injury. The blade can be tested by balancing it on a round shaft screwdriver. Grind metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly. Blade Installation 1. When installing a blade, place the side of the blade with a part number stamped in it facing the ground when the mower is in the operating position. 2. Use a torque wrench to tighten the spindle flange nut to between 70-90 foot-pounds. REPLACING BELTS Before performing any type of maintenance on the machine, wait for all parts to stop moving and disconnect the spark plug wire. Failure to follow this instruction could result in personal injury or property damage Avoid the possibility of a pinching injury. Do not place your fingers between belts and pulleys. The mower uses three belts: 1) drive belt, 2) deck engagement belt, 3) blade timing belt. Before replacing a belt, observe how the belt is routed around the pulleys and brackets to help when installing a replacement. IMPORTANT: The belts on the mower are specially designed to engage and disengage safely. For a proper working machine, use factory approved belts. Replacing the Drive Belt 1. Stop engine, wait for all parts to stop moving, and disconnect spark plug wire. Release all mower controls. . 3. 4. Remove belt cover as instructed earlier in this section. Loosen belt keeper (A). Never store lawn mower with fuel in tank indoors or in poorly ventilated areas where fuel fumes may reach an open flame, spark, or pilot light as on a furnace, water heater, clothes dryer, or gas appliance. PREPARING THE ENGINE For engines stored over 30 days: 1. To prevent gum from forming in fuel system or on carburetor parts, run engine until it stops from lack of fuel or add a gasoline additive to the gas in the tank. If you use a gas additive, run the engine for several minutes to circulate the additive through the carburetor--after which the engine and fuel can be stored up to six months. 2. While engine is still warm, change the oil. 3. Remove spark plug and pour approximately 1 oz. (30 ml) of clean engine oil into the cylinder. Pull the recoil starter several times to distribute the oil, and reinstall the spark plug. 4. Clean engine of surface debris. PREPARING THE LAWN MOWER • When storing the mower in an unventilated or metal storage shed, care should be taken to rustproof the non-painted surfaces. Using a light oil or silicone, coat the equipment, especially any springs, bearings, and cables. • Remove all dirt from exterior of engine and equipment. • Follow lubrication recommendations. Store equipment in a clean, dry area. Do not store in an area where equipment is present that may use a pilot light or has a component that can create a spark. MTD Consumer Group Inc must warrant the ECS on your outdoor equipment engine for the period of time listed below provided there has been no abuse, neglect or improper maintenance of outdoor equipment engine. Your ECS may include parts such as the carburetor, fuel-injection system, the ignition system, catalytic converter, fuel tanks, fuel lines, fuel caps, valves, canisters, filters, vapor hoses, clamps, connectors, and other associated emission-related components. Subject to certain conditions and exclusions as stated below, the warranty on emission-related parts is as follows: 1. Any warranted part that is not scheduled for replacement as required maintenance in the written instructions supplied, is warranted for the warranty period stated above. If the part fails during the period of warranty coverage, the part will be repaired or replaced by MTD Consumer Group Inc according to subsection (4) below. MTD Consumer Group Inc is liable for damages to other engine or equipment components proximately caused by a failure under warranty of any warranted part. 8. Throughout the off-road engine and equipment warranty period stated above, MTD Consumer Group Inc will maintain a supply of warranted parts sufficient to meet the expected demand for such parts. 9. Any replacement part may be used in the performance of any warranty maintenance or repairs and must be provided without charge to the owner. Such use will not reduce the warranty obligations of MTD Consumer Group Inc. 10. Add-on or modified parts that are not exempted by the Air Resources Board may not be used. The use of any non-exempted add-on or modified parts by the ultimate purchaser will be grounds for disallowing a warranty claims. MTD Consumer Group Inc will not be liable to warrant failures of warranted parts caused by the use of a non-exempted add-on or modified part.

Look For Relevant Emissions Durability Period and Air index information On Your Engine Emissions Label Engines that are certified to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Tier 2 Emission Standards must display information regarding the Emissions Durability Period and the Air Index. Sears, Roebuck and Co., U.S.A. makes this information available to the consumer on our emission labels. The Emissions Durability Period describes the number of hours of actual running time for which the engine is certified to be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenance in accordance with the Operating & Mainte- nance Instructions. The following categories are used: Moderate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 125 hours of actual engine running time. Intermediate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 250 hours of actual engine running time. Extended: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 500 hours of actual engine running time. For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to 25 hours per year. Therefore, the Emissions Durability Period of an engine with an intermediate rating would equate to 10 to 12 years. The Air Index is a calculated number describing the relative level of emissions for a specific engine family. The lower the Air Index, the cleaner the engine. This information is displayed in graphical form on the emissions label. After July 1,2000, Look For Emissions Compliance Period On Engine Emissions Compliance Label After July 1, 2000 certain Sears, Roebuck and Co., U.S.A. engines will be certified to meet the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Phase 2 emission standards. La manija de control de la cuchilla debe funcionar bien en ambas direcciones y regresar autom_ticamente a la posici6n desconectada cuando se la suelta. • Nunca opere la cortadora sobre cesped hOmedo. Siempre este seguro de su equilibrio. Si tropieza y cae puede lesionarse gravemente. Si siente que pierde el equilibrio, suelte inmediatamente la manija de control de la cuchilla y la cuchilla dejar& de rotar en tres segundos. • Corte el cesped solamente con luz de dia o con una buena luz artificial. Camine, nunca corra. • Detenga la cuchilla cuando cruce sendas, senderos o caminos de grava. • Si la m_quina comenzara a vibrar de manera anormal, detenga el motor y busque inmediatamente la causa. Nunca opere la cortadora si los dispositivos de seguridad est_n da_ados. Si no Io hace, pueden producirse lesiones personales. • El silenciador y el motor se calientan y pueden causar quemaduras. FUNCIONAIVlIENTO EN PENDIENTES Las pendientes son un factor importante en los accidentes ocasionados por derrapes y caidas y pueden producir lesiones graves. La operaci6n en pendientes requiere mucha precauci6n. Si no se siente seguro en una pendiente, no realice el corte. Para su seguridad, use el indicador de pendientes que se incluye como parte de este manual para medir la pendiente antes de operar la unidad en una zona inclinada. Si la pendiente supera los 15 grados, no realice el corte. Haga Io siguiente: • Corte el cesped de la pendiente en sentido transversal, nunca hacia arriba y abajo. Tenga sumo cuidado al cambiar de direcci6n en una pendiente. • Este atento a los agujeros, surcos, rocas, objetos ocultos o bultos que puedan provocar que se resbale o se tropiece. El cesped alto puede ocultar obst&culos. • Siempre este seguro de que est& bien afirmado. Si tropieza y cae puede lesionarse gravemente. Si siente que pierde el equilibrio, suelte inmediatamente la manija de control de la cuchilla y la cuchilla dejar_ de rotar en 3 segundos. No haga Io siguiente: • No corte el cesped cerca de hundimientos, zanjas o terraplenes, podria perder el equilibrio. • No corte el cesped en pendientes mayores de 15 grados como se muestra en el indicador de pendiente. • No corte el cesped hQmedo. Si no est_ firmemente parado, puede resbalarse. SERVIClO Manejo seguro de la gasolina: • Para evitar lesiones personales o da_os materiales sea sumamente cuidadoso al manipular la gasolina. La gasolina es sumamente inflamable y sus vapores pueden causar explosiones. Si se derrama gasolina encima o sobre la ropa se puede lesionar gravemente ya que se puede incendiar. • Lavese la piel y c_mbiese de ropa de inmediato. • Utilice s61o los recipientes para gasolina autorizados. • Nunca Ilene los recipientes en el interior de un vehiculo o cami6n o caja de remolque con recubrimientos pl&sticos. Antes de Ilenarlos, coloque siempre los recipientes en el suelo y lejos del vehiculo. • Retire el equipo a gasolina del cami6n o remolque y Ilenelo en el suelo. Si esto no es posible, Ilene el equipo en un remolque con contenedor port_til, en vez de desde una boquilla dispensadora de gasolina. • Mantenga la boquilla en contacto con el horde del dep6sito de combustible o con la abertura del recipiente en todo momento, hasta terminar de cargar. No utilice un dispositivo para abrir/cerrar la boquilla. • Apague todos los cigarrillos, cigarros, pipas y otras fuentes de combusti6n. • Nunca cargue combustible en la m&quina en interiores porque los vapores inflamables podrian acumularse en el _rea. • Nunca saque la tapa de la gasolina ni agregue combustible mientras el motor est& caliente o en marcha. Permita que el motor se enfrie pot Io menos dos minutos antes de volver a cargar combustible. • Nunca Ilene en exceso el dep6sito de combustible. Llene el tanque a no m&s de Y2 pulgada por debajo de la base del cuello del tap6n de carga, para permitir la expansi6n del combustible. • Vuelva a colocar la tapa de la gasolina y ajL]stela bien. • Limpie la gasolina que se pueda haber derramado sobre el motor o el equipo. Traslade la m_quina aotra zona. Espere 5 minutos antes de encender el motor. • Nunca almacene la m_quina o el recipiente de combustible en un espacio cerrado donde haya fuego, chispas o aparatos con piloto como por ejemplo, calentadores de agua, calefactores, hornos, secadores de ropa u otros aparatos a gas. • Para reducir el riesgo de incendio mantenga la m_quina limpia de pasto, hojas y de acumulaci6n de otros escombros. Limpie los derrames de aceite o combustible y saque todos los residuos embebidos de combustible. • Permita que la m_quina se enfrie pot Io menos 5 minutos antes de almacenarla. Servicio general: • Nunca encienda el motor en espacios cerrados o en una zona con poca ventilaci6n. El escape del motor contiene mon6xido de carbono, un gas inodoro y letal. • Antes de limpiar, reparar o inspeccionar la m&quina, compruebe que la cuchilla y todas las partes que se mueven se hallan detenido. Envuelva la cuchilla o utilice guantes y extreme las precauciones cuando efectQe mantenimiento. • Mantenga todos los pernos, tuercas y tornillos bien ajustados para asegurarse de que la m_quina se encuentra en condiciones seguras de operaci6n. • Nunca intente alterar los dispositivos de seguridad. Corte las tiras, si las hay, que aseguran la unidad al p_.let. Deje la unidad sobre el p_.let durante el rnontaje (para retirar la unidad del p_.let sin riesgos, espere hasta haber rnontado la rnanija. 2. Retire todo el ernbalaje protector y las tiras pl_sticas de uni& Es necesario quitar y desechar el soporte del canal antes de operar la cortadora de cesped. RETIRO DEL SOPORTE DEL CANAL 1. Ubique el soporte del canal que sostiene el canal de descarga en posici6n vertical, Figura 1. f Figura 1 2. Tire el canal para atr_.s hacia el motor. Mientras sostiene el canal con una rnano, retire el soporte del canal con la otra rnano. 3. Baje con cuidado el canal contra la plataforrna y descarte el soporte. MONTAJE DE LA MANIJA 1. Retire las perillas en estrella inferiores y los tornillos del carro de la rnanija inferior, Figura 2. Figura 2 50
2. Gire la manija superior a la operaci6n operativa, Figura 3. Tenga cuidado de no doblar ni torcer los cables al girar la manija. 3. Coloque la palanca de cambio superior en posici6n vertical alineando los orificios de la palanca con los de la placa de cambio, Figura 5. / / / J Figura 3 3. Instale los tornillos del carro y las perillas extraidos anteriormente. 4. Ajuste las perillas en estrella superiores e inferiores y los tornillos del carro para asegurar la manija superior a la inferior, Figura 3. INSTALACION DE LA PALANCA DE CAMBIO DE VELOCIDADES Extraiga el tornillo de 5/6-18" y la tuerca de seguridad que sujetan la palanca de cambio a la placa de la palanca de cambio, Figura 4. , Figura 4 Extraiga el tornillo y la tuerca restantes de la placa de la palanca de cambio inferior, Figura 4. Figura 5 4. Asegure la palanca a la placa usando los dos tornillos y las dos tuercas extraidas anteriormente, Figura 5. AJUSTES FINALES Presi6n de los neumaticos traseros Nunca exceda la presi6n m_xima de inflado que se indica en los laterales de los neum_ticos. Verifique la presi6n de los neum_.ticos regularmente y mantenga siempre la misma presi6n en ambos neum_.ticos traseros. IMPORTANTE: Consulte los laterales de las ruedas para conocer con exactitud la presi6n m_.xima en psi recomendada por el fabricante. No infle los neum_.ticos en exceso. La presi6n de neum_.ticos desigual podria hacer que la plataforma corte el cesped en forma despareja. 51

LENTO: Utilicelo durante la marcha lenta. PARAR: Detiene el motor. AsegQrese que ninguna persona aparte del operador permanezca cerca de la podadora mientras arranca el motor u opera la misma. Nunca encienda un motor en espacios cerrados o en una zona con poca ventilaci6n. El escape del motor contiene mon6xido de carbono, un gas inodoro y letal. Mantenga las manos, los pies, el cabello y la ropa suelta alejados de las )artes m6viles del motor y de la podadora. TAPON DE COMBUSTIBLE Retire el tap6n de combustible para agregar combustible al tanque de combustible. Use gasolina limpia, fresca, regular, sin plomo con un octanaje minimo de 85. Apague el motor y dejelo enfriar al menos dos minutos antes de quitar el tap6n de Ilenado de combustible. PALANCA DE ALTURA DE LA PLATAFORMA Use esta palanca para ajustar la altura de corte. Para utilizarla, mueva la palanca hacia la izquierda, luego col6quela en la muesca que mejor se adapte a la aplicaci6n deseada. 52
CONTROL DE LAS CUCHILLAS Se usa el control de las cuchillas para enganchar la plataforrna de la cortadora. Para enganchar este control, presione y retenga la palanca contra la ernpu_adura de la barra de control. Para detener las cuchillas, suelte el control de las cuchillas. Desenganche siernpre el control de las cuchillas antes de arrancar el motor. Asi se asegura de que las cuchillas no cornenzar_.n a girar cuando arranca el motor. CONTROL DE LA TRANSMISION El control de la transrnisi6n se usa para engranar y desengranar la transrnisi6n de las ruedas. Para enganchar este control, apriete el control de la trans- rnisi6n contra la ernpu_adura de la barra de control. Para detener la transrnisi6n, suelte el control de la transrnisi6n. IMPORTANTE: Suelte siernpre el control de la transrnisi6n antes de carnbiar las velocidades. PALANCA DE CAMBIO DE VELOCIDADES Use esta palanca para seleccionar una de cuatro velocidades de rnarcha directa, neutral o rnarcha atr_.s. IVlarcha directa Hay cuatro velocidades de rnarcha directa. La posici6n uno (1) es la rn_.s lenta, y la posici6n cuatro (4) es la rn_.s r_.pida. Marcha arras Para seleccionar rnarcha atr_.s, ponga la palanca en la posici6n de reversa (R). Neutral Coloque la palanca en neutro (N) antes de cornenzar el cortac_sped, y cuando el cortacesped no est,. en el uso. Adern_.s, el cortac_sped puede ser a rnano ernpujado o tirado colocando la palanca de palanca de carnbios en el N posici6n (neutra) y presionando el control de paseo contra el apret6n de rnanillar. El gas addico puede da_ar el sistema de combustible del motor mientras la m_.q_uina est,. almacenada. Para evitar problemas con el motor, se debe vaciar el sistema de combustible antes de almacenar la m_.quina durante 30 dfas o m_.s. Vade el tanque de nafta, encienda el motor y d_jelo funcionar hasta que las lineas de combustible y el carburador est_n vados. La siguiente temporada use combustible fresco. Consulte las Instruc- clones de ALMACENAMIENTO si desea informaci6n adicional. No use nunca productos de limpieza para motores o carburadores en el dep6sito de combustible, se pueden ocasionar da_os perma- nentes. IMPORTANTE: La cortadora de c_sped se entrega sin combustible en el tanque. • Nunca Ilene el tanque de combustible completamente. Llene el tanque a no m_.s de 1/2 pulgada por debajo de la base del cuello de Ilenado dejando espacio para la dilataci6n del combustible. • Siempre use gasolina para automotores sin plorno, limpia y nueva. Llene el tanque de combustible al aire libre y use un em- budo o pico para evitar derrarnar. AsegQrese de que el recipiente desde el cual vierte la gasolina est_ limpio y no est_ oxidado ni contaminado con otras parficulas extraSas. Aseg[3rese de limpiar el combustible que se haya derramado antes de arrancar el motor. • AI finalizar el trabajo, vacie el tanque de combustible si la cortadora de c_sped no ser_. usada durante los siguientes 30 dias o m_.s. AImacene la gasolina en un recipiente limpio y mantenga el recipiente bien tapado. Consulte las instrucciones de ALMACENAMIENTO si desea informaci6n adicional. Llenado de aceite IMPORTANTE: La cortadora de c_sped se entrega con aceite en el motor, no obstante, usted DEBE verificar el nivel de aceite antes de operarla. El aceite debe cambiarse despu_s de las primeras dos horas de operaci6n y cada 25 horas de operaci6n de ahi en m_.s. Utilice el tipo de aceite de motor especificado en la secci6n Mantenimiento. 1. Retire el tap6n de Ilenado de aceite/la varilla de nivel de aceite del tubo de Ilenado. . Controle que el nivel de aceite Ilegue hasta la marca FULL (lleno) de la varilla del nivel del aceite. Si es necesario, vierta aceite lentamente en el tubo de Ilenado hasta que el nivel de aceite alcance a lien& 3. Vuelva a colocar el tap6n de Ilenado de aceite / varilla del nivel del aceite. ENCENDIDO DE LA CORTADORA DE ClaSPED 1. Suelte todos los controles de la cortadora para impedir que las ruedas o las cuchillas roten. . 3. . Retire el cable de la bujia, inspeccione detenidamente la cortadora para ver que no tenga da_os, y repare el da_o antes de volver a encender y operar. El exceso de vibraci6n de la cortadora durante la operaci6n es una indicaci6n de daSo. Se debe inspeccionar y reparar la unidad Io antes posible. 54

USO DE LA CORTADORA DE CESPED IMPORTANTE: Suelte siernpre el control de la transrnisi6n antes de carnbiar las velocidad. Consulte la secci6n "Conozca su cortadora de cesped" para vet los controles de la cortadora. AsegOrese de que el c_sped esta libre de piedras, palos, cables u otros objetos que pudiesen daSar la cortadora o el motor. Dichos objetos pueden ser arrojados accidentalrnente pot la cortadora en cualquier direcci6n y provocar lesiones personales graves al operador y a otras personas. Para obtener rnejores resultados, no corte c_sped rnojado y nunca corte rn_s de un tercio de la Iongitud total del c_sped. 1. Una vez que el motor est_ funcionando, apriete el control de transrnisi6n contra la rnanija superior para irnpulsar la rn_.quina. Para activar las cuchillas de corte, apriete el control de las cuchillas contra la rnanija superior. 2. Para carnbiar de velocidad, libere la palanca de control de la transrnisi6n y rnueva la palanca de carnbio de velocidad a la posici6n deseada. Para practicar con la cortadora inicialrnente, ponga la palanca en la posici6n N O 1. Seleccione las velocidades directas segOn las condiciones del terreno y del corte. Use velocidades rn_.s bajas en terrenos agrestes o donde el pasto es rn_.s pesado o grueso. La velocidad directa se puede aurnentar sobre terrenos lisos o donde el pasto no esta rnuy tupido. Perrnita que las ruedas se detengan cornpletarnente antes de carnbiar de una velocidad a otra. IMPORTANTE: Tenga presente que al enganchar la palanca de control de la transrnisi6n con la palanca de carnbio en 3ra o 4ta velocidad, la potencia y el par motor generados pueden hacer que la unidad se sacuda hacia adelante. Para evitarlo, apriete lentarnente la palanca de control de la transrnisi6n contra la rnanija superior. 3. Para detener las cuchillas, suelte el control de las cuchillas. Para detener el control de la transrnisi6n alas ruedas, suelte el control de la transrnisi6n. DETENCION DE LA CORTADORA DE CESPED 1. Suelte el control de las cuchillas y la transrnisi6n para detener las ruedas y las cuchillas de plataforrna. 2. Mueva la palanca de control del regulador/cebador hacia abajo a la posici6n lenta (tortuga) _. Siernpre que sea posible, reduzca gradualrnente la velocidad del motor antes de detenerlo. . . Mueva la palanca de control del regulador/cebador totalrnente hacia abajo a la posici6n Stop (detenci6n). Desconecte el cable de la bujia y p6ngalo haciendo rnasa contra el motor. TRASLADO DE LA CORTADORA DE CESPED CON EL MOTOR APAGADO Se puede ernpujar o tirar de la cortadora rnanualrnente colocando la palanca de carnbio de velocidad en la posici6n N (neutral) y presionando el control de la transrnisi6n contra la ernpuSadura de la barra de control. ABONO O CORTE CON DESCARGA LATERAL Se puede usar la cortadora de c_sped tanto corno cortadora abonadora o corno cortadora con descarga lateral. Para usar la funci6n de abono, inserte la clavija de abono corno se indica a continuaci6n. Retire la clavija de abono para descargar lateralrnente los recortes de cesped. La clavija de abono est,. diseSada para rnantener el canal de descarga levantado durante el corte. Cuando se retira la clavija, el canal de descarga se baja solo para cortar con descarga lateral. Antes de instalar o desinstalar la clavija de abono, detenga el motor, espera a que las piezas dejen de moverse y desconecte el cable de la bujia. Para instalar o desinstalar la clavija de abono: 1. Detenga el motor y espera que todas las piezas dejen de rnoverse. . 3. . 5. Desconecte el cable de la bujia. Para instalar la clavija de abono, inserte la leng(Jeta derecha (A) de la clavija en el soporte de la plataforrna, Figura 8. Inserte la cubierta en la abertura de descarga (B), Figura 8. Una vez que la clavija de abono est,. colocada en la abertura de la plataforrna, ernpQjela hacia la parte posterior de la cortadora (C) para que la clavija calce correctarnente en la abertura, Figura 8. Para retirar la clavija, deslice la cubierta hacia la derecha (frente de la cortadora) para desenganchar la ranura de la plataforrna de la cortadora y luego fuerce el lado izquierdo de la cubierta hacia afuera para soltada. Detenga siempre el motor, desconecte la bujia y haga masa contra el motor antes de realizar cualquier tarea de mantenimiento en la cortadora. RECOMENDACIONES GENERALES • Respete siernpre las reglas de seguridad cuando realice cualquier tarea de rnantenirniento en la cortadora. • La garanfia de esta cortadora no cubre elernentos que ban estado sujetos al rnal uso o la negligencia del operador. Para recibir el reernbolso total de la garanfia, el operador deber& dar rnantenirniento a la podadora corno se indica en este manual. • El carnbio de la velocidad controlada del motor invalidar& la garanfia del motor. • Todos los ajustes deben ser verificados por Io rnenos una vez en cada estaci6n. Revise peri6dicarnente todos los sujetadores y cornpruebe que est_n bien ajustados. MANTENIMIENTO DEL MOTOR Control de la bujia de encendido Lirnpie la bujia y ajuste la separaci6n del electrodo a 0.030" al rnenos una vez por estaci6n, reernplace cada 100 horas de funcionarniento. 1. Lirnpie el _rea alrededor de la base de la bujia. No lije la bujia. Se debe lirnpiar las bujias rnediante raspado o tallado con cepillo de alarnbre y lavado con un solvente cornercial. 2. Saque e inspeccione la bujfa. Verifique la separaci6n para asegurarse de que est,. fijada en 0.030". Vea la Figura 9. 3. No use aire presurizado ni solventes para lirnpiar el cartucho del filtro de aire. Lirnpie o reernplace el filtro de aire cada 25 horas de funcionarniento. 1. Tire la rnanija del filtro de aire para arriba, Figura 10, y tire para atr_.s hacia el motor. 2. Retire la cubierta del filtro de aire, Figura 10. 3. Extraiga con cuidado el cartucho del filtro de aire y el pre-filtro (si est,. instalado) del alojarniento del soplador. 4. Lirnpie la base del cartucho del filtro de aire con cuidado para evitar que las irnpurezas penetren en el motor. 5. Coloque el pre-filtro, si est_ instalado, y el cartucho nuevarnente en el alojarniento del soplador. El cartucho se debe colocar firrnernente en su posici6n. 6. Aline las leng_Jetas de la cubierta con las ranuras del alojarniento del soplador y vuelva a colocar la cubierta. Cambio de aceite del motor El aceite del motor se debe cambiar cada 25 horas de funcionamiento. Para acceder a la v_Jvula de drenaje del aceite del motor, se debe girar hada adelante el firante tubular de la manija derecha, a, Extraiga la perilla en estrella superior y el tornillo del carro del lado derecho de la manija, Figura 11, b, Gire el firante tubular hada el frente de la cortadora para tener lugar para conectar la manguera de drenaje de aceite a la v_Jvula de drenaje de aceite, Figura 11. f Wlvula de drenaje de aceite .J Figura 11 Abra el tap6n protector en el extremo de la v_.lvula de drenaje de aceite para dejar expuesto el orificio de drenaje, Figura 12. Coloque el extremo opuesto de la manguera en un dep6sito de recolecci6n de aceite que posea capacidad suficiente para recoger el aceite usado. 5. Libere la v_.lvula presionando las dos etiquetas hacia dentro tirando. El petr61eo comenzar_, a drenar del motor. 6. Despu_s de que el petr61eo ha terminado de drenar, prensa las dos etiquetas hacia dentro y empuje la v_.lvula de desag_Je del aceite atr_.s en cerrar con Ilave la v_Jvula cerrada. Quite la manguera, y resuma el final de la v_.lvula de desag(Je del aceite para impedir a escombros entrar en el puerto de desag_Je. 7. Vuelva a Ilenar el motor con aceite de motor nuevo hasta que el nivel del aceite en la varilla de medici6n Ilegue a FULL (lleno). Vuelva a colocar el tap6n de Ilenado de aceite / varilla del nivel del aceite. Gire el tirante tubular de la manija derecha a su posici6n inicial. Aline el orificio central del tirante tubular con el orificio de la manija. Sujete con la perilla en estrella y el tornillo del carro extraidos anteriormente. Use solamente un aceite detergente de alta calidad cuya clasificaci6n de servicio API sea SF o SG. Seleccione el grado de viscosidad SAE del aceite segQn la temperatura de operaci6n esperada. Aunque los aceites de viscosidad mQItiple (5W30, 10W30, etc.) mejoran el encendido cuando el clima est,. frio, los mismos incrementan el consumo de aceite cuando se usan a m_.s de 32°E Compruebe el nivel de aceite con mayor frecuencia para evitar da_os debido a que el motor trabaje con un nivel de aceite bajo. Antes de Ilevar a cabo algQn tipo de rnantenirniento en la rn_.quina, espere a que todas las partes se detengan y desconecte el cable de la bujfa. EXTRACCION DE LA CUBIERTA DE LA CORREA La cubierta de la correa se debe extraer para realizar varios procedirnientos de rnantenirniento y servicio. Siga las siguientes instrucciones para extraer la cubierta de la correa. 1. Detenga el motor, espere a que todas las partes dejen de rnoverse y desconecte el cable de la bujfa. 2. Quite los tres tornillos y arandelas que sostienen la tapa al marco, la Figura 14. f . 4. J J Figura 14 Extraiga la cubierta de la correa. Para instalar de nuevo la tapa de cintur6n, coloque la tapa en la posici6n y sujete la utilizaci6n de tres tornillos y arandelas quitadas antes. No haga funcionar la unidad sin la cubierta de la correa instalada. Si no se observan estas instrucciones se pueden producir lesiones personales o daSos materiales. EXTRACCK)N DE LA PLATAFORiVlA DE LA CORTADORA DE C :SPED Antes de hacer cualquier tipo de rnantenirniento en la parte inferior de la cortadora, se debe extraer la plataforrna de corte. Siga las siguientes instrucciones para extraer la plataforrna de corte: 1. Detenga el motor, espere a que todas las partes dejen de rnoverse y desconecte el cable de la bujia. 2. Suelte todos los controles de la cortadora de c_sped. 3. Saque la cubierta de la correa corno se detalla en "Extracci6n de la cubierta de la correa." 4. Use la palanca de altura de la plataforrna para mover la plataforrna de corte a su posici6n rn_.s elevada. 5. Coloque tacos de rnadera debajo de la plataforrna. . 7. 58 Use la palanca de altura de la plataforrna para bajar la plataforrna y hacerla descansar sobre los tacos de rnadera. Mire la plataforrna de corte desde el lado izquierdo de la cortadora y Iocalice el pasador de horquilla que fija la varilla de sost_n de la plataforrna al lateral posterior izquierdo de la plataforrna, Figura 15. Figura 15 8. Extraiga el pasador de horquilla que fija la varilla de sost_n, y extraiga con cuidado el soporte de la plataforrna del brazo de elevaci6n de la plataforrna, Figura 15. 9. Repita los pasos 7 y 8 del lado derecho de la cortadora. AI terrninar, se deben extraer los cuatro pasadores de horquilla. 10. Ernpuje la plataforrna de corte hacia la izquierda para desenganchar el rnontaje de elevaci6n de la plataforrna. 11. Use la rnanija de elevaci6n de la plataforrna para levantar la plataforrna a su posici6n rn_.s alta. 12. Retire los tacos de rnadera de debajo de la plataforrna. 13. Extraiga la correa de transrnisi6n corno se detalla en "Reernplazo de la correa de transrnisi6n". 14. 15. Deslice la plataforrna de corte hacia la porte posterior de la unidad. 16. Retire la plataforrna de corte. 17. Para instalar la plataforrna de corte, siga los pasos anteriores en orden inverso. Antes de Ilevar a cabo alg[3n tipo de rnantenirniento en la rn_.quina, espere a que todas las partes se detengan y desconecte el cable de la bujia. Puede producir da_os a los cornponentes el_ctricos, husillos, poleas, rodarnientos o al motor. LUBRICACION Puntos de pivote y varillaje Lubrique todos los puntos de pivote del sisterna de transrnisi6n y el varillaje de elevaci6n al rnenos una vez por ternporada, o cada 25 horas de funcionarniento, con aceite ligero. Ruedas traseras Se deben extraer las ruedas traseras de los ejes una vez por ternporada. Lubrique los eje y las Ilantas adecuadarnente con grasa rnultiuso antes de volver a instalarlos. Rodamientos de las ruedas delanteras Hay accesorios de engrase en cada ruedita yen el bastidor que cubre cada ruedita delantera, Figura 17. Lubrique estas _.reas usando una pistola de engrase despu_s de cada 50 horas de trabajo. Para lubricar el rodarniento de una ruedita, rote la rueda para que el accesorio de engrase se alinee con la ranura del soporte, Figura 17 - asi habr_, lugar para conectar el acople de la pistola de engrase al accesorio de engrase. No tendr_, necesidad de usar el accesorio de engrase del otro lado de la rueda. No perrnita que se acurnulen residuos alrededor de ningQn cornponente de la cortadora. Limpieza del motor Las partes del motor se deben rnantener lirnpias para reducir el riesgo de sobrecalentarniento y cornbusti6n de los residuos. Es particularrnente irnportante cuando se corta c_sped alto. Limpieza de la plataforma de corte Deck Wash System TM Utilice el sisterna Deck Wash System TM (Sisterna de lavado de la plataforrna) para lavar la parte inferior de la plataforrna y quitar los restos de c_sped recortado e irnpedir la acurnulaci6n de sustancias quirnicas corrosivas. 1. Nunca exceda la presi6n rn_.xirna de inflado que se indica en los laterales de los neurn_.ticos. PRESION DE LOS NEUiVlATICOS TRASEROS La presi6n operativa recornendada para los neurn_.ticos traseros es de aproxirnadarnente 20 p.s.i. Verifique la presi6n de los neurn_.ticos regularrnente y rnantenga siernpre la rnisrna presi6n en arnbos neurn_.ticos traseros. IMPORTANTE: Consulte los laterales de las ruedas para conocer con exactitud la presi6n rn_.xirna en psi recornendada por el fabricante. No infle los neurn_.ticos en exceso. La presi6n de neurn_.ticos desigual podria hacer que la plataforrna corte el c_sped en forrna despareja. REEIVIPLAZO DEL ESCUDO POSTERIOR 1. Si un tornillo est,. presente en cada lado del escudo rastreador, quite los dos tornillos. 2. DoNe el escudo posterior hacia adentro a cada lado para liberar las lengiJetas de los agujeros en el bastidor de la cortadora, Figura 19. , , Figura 19 Reernplace con un escudo nuevo doblando el escudo para perrnitir que las leng(Jetas calcen en los orificios del bastidor de la cortadora. Sustituya los dos tornillos (si los tornillos fueran usados para sostener el escudo rastreador al marco de cortacesped). MANTENIMIENTO DE LAS CUCHILLAS DE CORTE Asegurese de apagar el motor y desconectar el cable de la bujia y hacer masa contra el motor para evitar el arranque accidental antes de retirar la o ias cuchiiias de corte para afilarlas o reemplazarlas. Protejase las manos usando guantes gruesos o un trapo para agarrar la cuchiiia de corte. Inspeccione peri6dicamente los husillos de ias cuchillas para controlar si hay fisuras o daSos, especialmente despues de golpear un objeto extraSo. Reemplace de inmediato si esta.n daSados. Las cuchillas de las cortadora son muy filosas. Cuando trabaje con las cuchiilas, use guantes de cuero grueso o envuelva las cuchillas en trapos gruesos para protegerse de los hordes filosos. Afilado de cuchillas IMPORTANTE: Si existe una separacbn de metal, reernphce las cuchillas por otras nuevas. 1. Para afilar las cuchillas de corte de forrna adecuada, extraiga cantidades iguales de metal de arnbos extrernos de las cuchillas a Io largo de los bordes cortantes, de forrna paraMa al borde de caida, a un _.ngulo de 250 a 30 °, Figura 21. • Es irnportante que cada horde de la cuchilla de corte sea pulido por igual para rnantener el equilibrio adecuado de la cuchilla. Una cuchilla desequilibrada causar_, vibraci6n excesiva, y puede oca- sionar daSos rnateriales a la cortadora que resulten en lesiones personales. Se puede probar la cuchilla bahnce_.ndola sobre un destornillador de eje circular. Afile el metal del lado pesado hasta que quede bien equilibrada. f IMPORTANTE: Las correas de la cortadora de c_sped han sido diseSadas especialrnente para que engranen y desengranen sin riesgo. Para que la rn_.quina funcione de rnanera adecuada, use correas aprobadas por el fabricante. Reemplazo de la correa de transmisi6n 1. Detenga el motor, espere a que todas las partes dejen de rnoverse y desconecte el cable de la bujia. 2. Suelte todos los controles de la cortadora de cesped. 3. Retire la cubierta de la correa corno se ha indicado antes en esta secci6n. , 5. 6. Afioje el guardacorrea (A). REEIVIPLAZO DE LAS CORREAS Antes de Ilevar a cabo algQn tipo de rnantenirniento en la rn_.quina, espere a que todas las partes se detengan y desconecte el cable de la bujia. La cortadora utiliza tres correas: 1) correa de transrnisi6n, 2) correa de enganche de la plataforrna, 3) correa de sincronizaci6n de la cuchilla. Antes de reernplazar una correa, observe por d6nde pasa la correa alrededor de las poleas y soportes corno ayuda al instalar el repuesto. 61

Cualquier pieza garantizada que no este programada para ser reemplazada como parte del mantenimiento requerido en las instrucciones escritas suminis- tradas se garantiza por el periodo de garantia arriba mencionado. Si la pieza falla durante el periodo de cobertura de la garantia, la misma ser_ reparada o reemplazada por MTD Consumer Group Inc. de acuerdo con el parrafo (4) a continuaci6n. Cualquier pieza reparada o reemplazada segQn la garanfia se garantizar_ pot el resto del periodo de garantia. 2. Cualquier pieza garantizada que este programada solamente para inspecci6n regular en las instrucciones escritas suministradas se garantiza pot el periodo de garantia arriba mencionado. Cualquier pieza reparada o reemplazada segQn la garantia se garantizar_ pot el resto del periodo. 3. Cualquier pieza garantizada que este programada para reemplazo segQn el mantenimiento requerido de conformidad con las instrucciones escritas suminis- tradas, se garantiza por el periodo de tiempo anterior a la primera fecha de reemplazo programada para esa pieza. Si la pieza falla antes del primer reemplazo programado, la misma ser_ reparada o reemplazada pot MTD Consumer Group Inc. de acuerdo con el parrafo (4) a continuaci6n. Cualquier pieza reparada o reemplazada bajo garantia se garantizar_ pot el resto del periodo anterior al primer reemplazo programatic puntual para esa pieza. 4. La reparaci6n o el reemplazo de cualquier pieza garantizada de conformidad con las disposiciones de la garantia que aqui se estipula se deben realizar en un centro de garantia sin costo alguno para el propietario. 5. No obstante las disposiciones que aqui se estipulan, los servicios o reparaciones bajo garantia se suministrar_n en todos nuestros centros de distribuci6n bajo franquicia de mantenimiento para los motores o equipos en cuesti6n. 6. El propietario del motor de equipos de exteriores no deber_ pagar el trabajo de diagn6stico directamente asociado con una pieza garantizada defectuosa en relaci6n con las emisiones, siempre y cuando dicho trabajo de diagn6stico se realice en un centro cubierto pot la garantia. 7. MTD Consumer Group Inc es responsable pot da6os causados a otros componentes de motores o equipos derivados de la falla bajo garantia de cualquier pieza garantizada.
8. Durante la totalidad del periodo de garantia del motor y equipo para todo terreno arriba mencionado, MTD Consumer Group Inc mantendr_ un suministro de piezas bajo garantia suficiente para satisfacer la demanda esperada de tales piezas. 9. Cualquier pieza de reemplazo se podr_ usar para el cumplimiento del mantenimiento o las reparaciones bajo garantia y se suministrar_n sin cargo para el propietario. Dicho uso no reducir_ las obligaciones de garantia de MTD Consumer Group Inc. 10. No se podr_n usar piezas adicionales ni modificadas que no esten exentas de acuerdo con el Departamento de los Recursos del Aire (Air Resources Board).
