GENERAL OPERATION * Read this operator's manual carefully in its entirety before attempting to assemble this machine. Read, understand, and follow all instructions on the machine and in the manuals before operation. Keep this manual in a safe place for future and regular reference and for ordering replacement parts , Be completely familiar with the controls and the proper use of this machine before operating it. , This machine is a precision piece of power equipment, not a plaything. Therefore, exercise extreme caution at all times. This machine has been designed to perform one job: to mow grass. Do not use it for any other purpose. , Never allow children under 14 years of age to operate this machine. Children 14 and over should read and understand the instructions and safe operation practices in this manual and on the machine and should be trained and supervised by an adult. , Only responsible individuals who are familiar with these rules of safe operation should be allowed to use this machine. , Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used. Remove all stones, sticks, wire, bones, toys and other foreign objects, which could be tripped over or picked up and thrown by the blade. Thrown objects can cause serious personal injury. , Plan your mowing pattern to avoid discharge of material toward roads, sidewalks, bystanders and the like. Also, avoid discharg- ing material against a wall or obstruction, which may cause discharged material to ricochet back toward the operator. , To help avoid blade contact or a thrown object injury, stay in operator zone behind handles and keep children, bystanders, helpers and pets at least 75 feet from mower while it is in opera- tion. Stop machine if anyone enters area. • Always wear safety glasses or safety goggles during operation and while performing an adjustment or repair to protect your eyes. Thrown objects which ricochet can cause serious injury to the eyes. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and close-fitting slacks and shirts. Shirts and pants that cover the arms and legs and steel-toed shoes are recommended. Never operate this machine in bare feet, sandals, slippery or light-weight (e.g. canvas) shoes. Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts or under the cutting deck. Contact with blade can amputate fingers, hands, toes and feet. A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade contact or thrown object injuries. Many injuries occur as a result of the mower being pulled over the foot during a fall caused by slipping or tripping. Do not hold on to the mower if you are falling; release the handle immediately. Never pull the mower back toward you while you are walking. If you must back the mower away from a wall or obstruction first look down and behind to avoid tripping and then follow these steps: 1. Step back from mower to fully extend your arms. 2. Be sure you are well balanced with sure footing. 3. Pull the mower back slowly, no more than half way toward you. 4. Repeat these steps as needed. Do not operate the mower while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Do not engage the self-propelled mechanism on machines so equipped while starting engine. 3
• The blade control handle is a safety device. Never attempt to bypass its operation. Doing so makes the safety device inopera- tive and may result in personal injury through contact with the rotating blade. The blade control handle must operate easily in both directions and automatically return to the disengaged position when released. • Never operate the mower in wet grass. Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. If you feel you are losing your footing, release the blade control handle immediately and the blade will stop rotating within three seconds. • Mow only in daylight or good artificial light. Walk, never run. • Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives, walks or roads. • If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally, stop the engine and check immediately for the cause. Vibration is gener- ally a warning of trouble. • Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes to a complete stop before removing the grass catcher or unclogging the chute. The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few seconds after the blade control is released. Never place any part of the body in the blade area until you are sure the blade has stopped rotating. • Never operate mower without proper trail shield, discharge cover, grass catcher, blade control handle or other safety protective de- vices in place and working. Never operate mower with damaged safety devices. Failure to do so can result in personal injury. Muffler and engine become hot and can cause a burn. Do not touch. • Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment while the engine is running. • Only use parts and accessories made for this machine by the manufacturer as listed in the Parts pages of this Operator's Manual. Failure to do so can result in personal injury. • When starting engine, pull cord slowly until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly. Rapid retraction of starter cord (kickback) will pull hand and arm toward engine faster than you can let go. Broken bones, fractures, bruises or sprains could result. • If situations occur which are not covered in this manual, use care and good judgement. Contact 1-800-4MY-HOME® for information and assistance. SLOPE OPERATION Slopes are a major factor related to slip and fall accidents, which can result in severe injury. Operation on slopes requires extra caution. If you feel uneasy on a slope, do not mow it. For your safety, use the Slope Guide included as part of this manual to measure slopes before operating this machine on a sloped or hilly area. If the slope is greater than 15 degrees, do not mow it. Do: o Mow across the face d slopes; never up and down. Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes. • Watch for holes, ruts, rocks, hidden objects, or bumps which can cause you to slip or trip. Tall grass can hide obstacles. • Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury. If you feel you are losing your balance, release the blade control handle immediately and the blade will stop rotating within three (3) seconds. Do Not: • Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches or embankments, you could lose your footing or balance. Do not mow slopes greater than 15 degrees as shown on the slope gauge. • Do not mow on wet grass. Unstable footing could cause slipping. CHILDREN Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the presence of children. Children are often attracted to the mower and the mowing activity. They do not understand the dangers. Never assume that children will remain where you last saw them. Keep children out of the mowing area and under watchful care of a responsible adult other than the operator. Be alert and turn mower off if a child enters the area. Before and while moving backwards, look behind and down for small children. Use extreme care when approaching blind corners, doorways, shrubs, trees, or other objects that may obscure your vision of a child who may run into the mower. Keep children away from hot or running engines. They can suffer burns from a hot muffler. Never allow children under 14 years of age to operate this machine. Children 14 and over should read and understand the instructions and safe operation practices in this manual and on the machine and be trained and supervised by an adult. SERVICE Safe Handling Of Gasoline: • To avoid personal injury or property damage use extreme care in handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive. Serious personal injury can occur when gasoline is spilled on yourself or your clothes, which can ignite. Wash your skin and change clothes immediately. • Use only an approved gasoline container. • Never fill containers inside a vehicle or on a truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner. Always place containers on the ground away from your vehicle before filling. • Remove gas-powered equipment from the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground. If this is not possible, then refuel such equipment on a trailer with a portable container, rather than from a gasoline dispenser nozzle. • Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the fuel tank or container opening at all times until fueling is complete. Do not use a nozzle lock-open device. 4
• Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other sources of ignition. • Never fuel machine indoors because flammable vapors will accumulate in the area. • Never remove gas cap or add fuel while engine is hot or running. Allow engine to cool at least two minutes before refueling. • Never over fill fuel tank. To allow for expansion of the fuel, do not fill above the bottom of the fuel tank neck. • Replace gasoline cap and tighten securely. • If gasoline is spilled, wipe it off the engine and equipment. Move machine to another area. Wait 5 minutes before starting engine. • Never store the machine or fuel container near an open flame, spark or pilot light as on a water heater, space heater, furnace, clothes dryer or other gas appliances. • To reduce fire hazard, keep machine free of grass, leaves, or other debris build-up. Clean up oil or fuel spillage and remove any fuel soaked debris. Allow machine to cool at least 5 minutes before storing. General Service: • Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas. • Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make certain the blade and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine to prevent unintended starting. Check the blade and engine mounting bolts at frequent intervals for proper tightness. Also, visually inspect blade for damage (e.g., bent, cracked, worn). Replace blade with the original equipment manufacture's (O.E.M.) blade only, listed in the Parts pages of this manual. Use of parts which do not meet the original equipment specifications may lead to improper performance and compro- mise safety! • Mower blades are sharp and can cut. Wrap the blade or wear gloves, and use extra caution when servicing them. Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight to be sure the equipment is in safe working condition. Never tamper with safety devices. Check their proper operation regularly. After striking a foreign object, stop the engine, disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine. Thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage. Repair the damage before starting and operating the mower. Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment while the engine is running. • Grass catcher components, discharge cover, and trail shield are subject to wear and damage which could expose moving parts or allow objects to be thrown. For safety protection, frequently check components and replace immediately with original equipment manufacturer's (O.E.M.) parts only, listed in the Parts pages of this manual. Use of parts which do not meet the original equipment specifications may lead to improper performance and compromise safety! Do not change the engine's governor setting or over-speed the engine. The governor controls the maximum safe operating speed of the engine. Check fuel line, tank, cap, and fittings frequently for cracks or leaks. Replace if necessary. Do not crank engine with spark plug removed. • Maintain or replace safety and instruction labels, as necessary. • Observe proper disposal laws and regulations. Improper disposal of fluids and materials can harm the environment. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this product has an Average UsefulLife of seven (7) years, or 140 hours of operation. At the end of the Average Useful Life have the machine inspected annually by a Sears or other qualified service dealer to ensure that all mechanical and safety systems are working properly and not worn excessively. Failure to do so can result in accidents, injuries or death. DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE To avoid serious injury or death, do not modify engine in any way. Tampering with the governor setting can lead to a runaway engine and cause it to operate at unsafe speeds. Never tamper with factory setting of engine governor. Doing so will void the product warranty. NOTICE REGARDING EMISSIONS Engines which are certified to comply with California and federal EPA emission regulations for SORE (Small Off Road Equipment) are certified to operate on regular unleaded gasoline, and may include the following emission control systems: Engine Modification (EM) and Three Way Catalyst (TWC) if so equipped. SPARK ARRESTOR This machine is equipped with an internal combustion engine and should not be used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brush covered or grass-covered land unless the engine's exhaust system is equipped with a spark arrester meeting applicable local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, it should be maintained in effective working order by the operator. In the State of California the above is required by law (Section 4442 of the California Public Resources Code). Other states may have similar laws. Federal laws apply on federal lands. A spark arrester for the muffler is available through your nearest Sears Parts and Repair Service Center.

IMPORTANT: This unit is shipped without gasoline or oil in the engine. Be certain to service engine with gasoline and oil as instructed in the Operation section before starting or running your machine. NOTE: Reference to right and left hand side of the Lawn Mower is observed from the operating position. OPENING CARTON 1. Cut each corner of the carton vertically from top to bottom. 2. Remove all loose parts. 3. Remove loose packing material. REMOVING UNIT FROM CARTON 1. Lift unit from the rear to detach it from underlying carton material and roll unit out of carton. 2. Check carton thoroughly for any other loose parts. LOOSE PARTS IN CARTON • Grass Catcher • Grass Catcher Adapter • Side Discharge Chute • Engine Oil ASSEMBLY Attaching The Handle 1. Remove any packing material which may be between upper and lower handles. A. Pull up and back on upper handle as shown in Figure 1. Make certain the lower handle is seated securely into the handle mounting brackets. Do not crimp cables while lifting the handle up. B. Tighten star knobs to secure upper handle to lower handle. Make sure that each carriage bolt is seated properly in the handle. 2. Locate the hairpin clip on the weld pin on each side of lower handle. A. Remove hairpin clip from this hole. Using a pair of pliers, insert hairpin clip into the hole on pin closest to the bracket. See Figure 2. Repeat on other side. B. Insert a carriage bolt from the manual bag into the upper hole on the handle mounting bracket. Secure with one plastic wing nut, also included in the manual bag. Repeat on other side with remaining hardware. f Figure 1 J f _jf fJ t j Figure 2 NOTE: Make certain the drive cable is routed around the outside and above the lower handle so it does not interfere with attaching the grass bag. The chute door has been designed to move the starter rope out of the way of the bag when the chute door is opened. 10
3. The rope guide, which is connected to the support rod, is located on the right side of the lower handle. See Figure 3 below. A. Hold blade control against upper handle. B. Pull starter rope out of the engine. Release blade control. C. Slip starter rope into rope guide. D. Use cable ties to secure cable to lower handle. Attaching the Grass Catcher The mower was shipped with the mulching baffle installed on the unit. For bagging purposes, you will have to attach the grass bag and its adapter in place of the mulching baffle. 1. Remove three wing nuts holding the mulching baffle in place and remove from unit. See Figure 4. 2. Replace with grass bag adapter, while making sure the front lip of adapter goes under the edge of the deck. Secure with wing nuts previously removed. 3. Lift chute door on the grass bag adapter and slide grass bag onto the adapter. See Figure 5. Figure 3 f Figure 5 Figure 4 .J 11
f -'% Attaching Side Discharge Cover Follow steps below to install the side discharge cover: ..... ' .... 1. Remove mulching baffle or grass bag adapter from unit by disconnecting wing nuts. 2. Attach side discharge cover to unit and secure with the three wing nuts. See Figure 6. ADJUSTMENTS Cutting Height The cutting height adjustment lever is located above the rear Idt wheel. See Figure 7A insert. 1. Pull lever out and away from mower. 2. Move lever forward or back for desired cutting height. 3. Release lever towards mower deck. The front wheel cutting height is determined by selecting one of six positions on each caster assembly. To adjust front cutting height, refer to Figure 7B and proceed as follows: 1. Remove wing nut from axle bolt. Slide axle bolt and wave washer from the assembly and select a cutting height. 2. With wave washer on axle bolt, reinsert hardware in the square hole desired through wheel assembly and secure with wing nut previously removed. IMPORTANT: All wheels must be placed in the same relative position. For rough or uneven lawns, move the height adjustment lever to a higher position. This will stop scalping of grass. The casters can be locked in a straight ahead position or position to swivel freely. See Figure 70 insert. 1. Lift lock pins. 2. Place in larger holes to lock wheels. Place pins in smaller holes to allow casters to rotate freely for turning. Drive Control The adjustment wheel is located in the drive control handle housing and is used to tighten or loosen the drive belt. You will have to adjust the drive control if any of the following happens: 1. The mower does not propel itself with the drive control engaged. 2. The mower's drive wheels hesitate with the drive control engaged. If either of these conditions occur, rotate the adjustment wheel clockwise to tighten and counter-clockwise to loosen cable to adjust the drive control. See Figure 8. NOTE: For some people the drive control may not be in a comfortable position. You can adjust the handle by tightening the adjustment wheel. Figure 6 f 12 Figure 8 \\
Drive Control__ Control Start Ignition Key Shift Lever Recoil Starter Cutting Height Adjustment Lever Gas Cap / 0il Cap/ Side Discharge Cover J Figure 9 BLADE CONTROL ELECTRIC START IGNITION KEY The blade control is attached to the upper handle of the mower. See Figure 9. Depress and squeeze it against the upper handle to operate the unit. Release it to stop engine and blade. The electric start ignition key is located on the left side of the handle panel. It is used only for the electric starter. SIDE DISCHARGE COVER This blade control is a safety device. Never attempt to bypass its operations. Your mower is shipped as a mulcher. To discharge the grass clippings to the side instead, follow the instructions in the Assembly section to attach the side discharge cover. CUTTING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT LEVER The cutting height adjustment lever is located above the left rear wheel. To adjust the cutting height, refer to the Assembly section. DRIVE CONTROL The drive control is located on the upper handle. Squeeze the drive control to engage the drive system. Release it to disengage the drive system. SHIFT LEVER The shift lever is located on the drive control housing on the upper handle. This lever is used to select the forward speed of the mower. When changing speed selection, release the drive control. IMPORTANT: Move the shift lever only when the engine is running. Changing the shift lever setting with the engine off can damage the mower. Keep hands and feet away from the chute area on cutting deck. Refer to warning label on the unit. RECOIL STARTER The recoil starter is connected to the support rod and is located on the right side of the lower handle. Stand behind the unit and pull the recoil starter rope to start the unit. GAS CAP Remove the gas cap to add fuel to the fuel tank. Use clean, fresh, regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87 octane. OIL CAP/DIPSTICK Refer to the Maintenance section for instructions on checking the oil. TRAIL SHIELD The trail shield is attached to the rear of the mower and is there to protect the operator from flying debris. Do not use the mower unless the shield is fully functional and in place. 13
GAS AND OiL FILL-UP f "_ IMPORTANT: This unit is shipped without gasoline or oil in the engine. Be certain to service engine with gasoline and oil as instructed in this section before starting or running your machine. Oil (one 18 ounce bottle shipped with unit) First Time Use 1. Remove oil fill dipstick (G). See Figure 10. 2. With the mower on level ground, empty entire contents of oil bottle provided into the engine oil fill (H). 3. Replace oil fill dipstick and tighten. Subsequent Uses Use 4-stroke motor oil that meets or exceeds the requirements for API service category SF, SG, SH, SJ or later. Always check the API service label on the oil container to be sure it includes the letters SF, SG, SH, SJ or later. Outdoor temperatures determine the proper oil viscosity for the engine. Use the chart to select the best viscosity for the outdoor temperature range expected. f 16so4s6 o** " 2 ¸ 32 14 o4 40 30 20 10 °30 * Below 40°F (4°C) the use of SAE 30 will result in hard starting. ** Above 80°F (27°C) the use of 10W-30 may cause increased oil consumption. Check oil level more frequently. 1. Check the oil with the engine stopped and level. 2. Remove the oil fill dipstick and wipe it clean. 3. Insert and tighten the oil fill dipstick. Remove it to check the oil level. See Figure 10. 4. If the oil level is near or below the lower limit mark on the dipstick, remove the oil fill dipstick, and fill with the recommended oil to the upper limit mark (J). Do not overfill. 5. Reinstall the oil fill dipstick. Gasoline Do not use unapproved gasolines, such as E85. Do not mix oil in I gasoline or modify engine to run on alternate fuels. This will damage _the engine components and void the engine warranty. Fuel must meet these requirements: • Clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline. Figure 10 • A minimum of 87 octane/87 AKI (91 RON). • Gasoline with up to 10% ethanol (gasohol) or up to 15% MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) is acceptable. Refuel in a well-ventilated area with the engine stopped. If the engine has been running, allow it to cool first. Never refuel the engine inside a building where gasoline fumes may reach flames or sparks. e Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive, and you can be burned or seriously injured when refueling. Stop engine and keep heat, sparks, and flame away. Refuel only outdoors. Wipe up spills immediately. If your equipment will be used on an infrequent or intermittent basis, please refer to the Off Season Storage section for additional informa- tion regarding fuel deterioration. NOTE: Fuel can damage paint and some types of plastic. Be careful not to spill fuel when filling your fuel tank. Never use stale or contaminated gasoline or oil/gasoline mixture. Avoid getting dirt or water in the fuel tank. 1. Remove the fuel tank cap. 2. Fill the fuel tank with fuel. To allow for expansion of the fuel, do not fill above the bottom of the fuel tank neck. Do not overfill. Wipe up spilled fuel before starting the engine. 3. Install the fuel tank cap and tighten it until it clicks. 4. Move lawn mower at least 10 feet away from the fuel container/ source and site before starting the engine. Be sure no one other than the operator is standing near the lawn mower while starting engine or operating mower. Never run engine indoors or in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas. Keep hands, feet, hair and loose clothing away from any moving parts on engine and lawn mower. 14
TO START ENGINE 1. Standing behind the mower, squeeze the blade control handle against upper handle. See Figure 11. 2. This mower has two separate starting systems, electric and recoil. Electric Start: Turn ignition key to the right to start the engine. Release the key after the engine starts. Recoil Start: Grasp starter handle and pull rope out slowly until engine reaches start of compression cycle (rope will pull slightly harder at this point). Let the rope rewind slowly. Pull rope with a rapid, continuous, full arm stroke. Keeping a firm grip on the starter handle, let the rope rewind slowly. Rapid retraction of starter cord (kickback) will pull hand and arm toward engine faster than you can let go. Broken bones, fractures, bruises or sprains could result. NOTE: If engine floods, wait a few minutes to restart. TO STOP ENGINE 1. Release blade control to stop the engine and blade. Wait for the blade to stop completely before performing any work on the mower or to remove the grass catcher. USING YOUR LAWN MOWER Be sure lawn is clear of stones, sticks, wire, or other objects which could damage lawn mower or engine. Such objects could be accidently thrown by the mower in any direction and cause serious personal injury to the operator and others. The operation of any lawn mower can result in foreign objects being thrown into the eyes, which can damage your eyes severely. Always wear safety glasses while operating the mower, or while performing any adjustments or repairs on it. 1. Once the engine is running, squeeze the drive control against the upper handle to propel mower. Release it to disengage the drive. 2. Use the shift lever to select the forward speed of the mower- 1 is the slowest speed, 6 is the fastest. When changing speed selection, release the drive control. IMPORTANT: Move the shift lever only when the engine is running. Changing the shift lever setting with the engine off can damage the mower. USING AS MULCHER For mulching grass, remove the grass catcher or the side discharge chute from the mower, and reattach the mulching baffle. For dfective mulching, do not cut wet grass. If the grass has been allowed to grow in excess of four inches, mulching is not recommended. Use the grass catcher to bag clippings instead. USING GRASS CATCHER You can use the grass catcher to collect clippings while you are operating the mower. 1. Attach grass catcher following instructions in the Assembly section. Grass clippings will automatically collect in the bag as you run the mower. 2. Operate the mower till the grass bag is full. 3. Stop engine completely by releasing the blade control. Make sure that the unit has come to a complete stop. 4. While holding the grass bag by both the rear handle and the lower handle, lift the grass bag straight up off the adapter. The chute door will move the rope out of the way of the bag. 5. Continuing to hold the lower handle, raise the rear of the grass bag and release the lower handle over a proper receptacle. The grass bag will open and the grass clippings will disperse. When replacing the grass bag, be sure the top of the bag rests on the wire support between the handles. If you strike a foreign object, stop the engine. Remove wire from the spark plug, thoroughly inspect mower for any damage, and repair damage before restarting and operating. Extensive vibration of mower during operation is an indication of damage. The unit should be promptly inspected and repaired. 15
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE Before performing any type of maintenance/service, disengage all controls and stop the engine. Wait until all moving parts have come to a complete stop. Disconnect spark plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent unintended starting. Follow the maintenance schedule given below. This chart describes service guidelines only. Always stop engine, disconnect spark plug wire, and ground against engine before performing any type of maintenance on your machine. GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS • Always observe safety rules when performing any maintenance. • The warranty on this lawn mower does not cover items that have been subjected to operator abuse or negligence. To receive full value from warranty, operator must maintain the equipment as instructed here. • Changing of engine-governed speed will void engine warranty. • All adjustments should be checked at least once each season. • Periodically check all fasteners and make sure these are tight. ENGINE MAINTENANCE Spark Plug For good performance, the spark plug must be properly gapped and free of deposits. Replace the spark plug annually. 1. Disconnect the cap from the spark plug, and remove any dirt from the spark plug area. 2. Use the proper size spark plug wrench to remove the spark plug. NOTE: Replace with a Champion® RC12YC spark plug. 3. Check the gap with a wire gauge. See Figure 12. Spark plug gap should be 0.020 in (0.51 ram). If necessary, reset the gap. 4. install and tighten the spark plug to the recommended torque (180 Ib-in [20 Nm]). 5. Attach the spark plug cap to the spark plug. Air Cleaner A dirty air cleaner will restrict air flow to the carburetor and cause poor engine performance, inspect the filter each time the engine is oper- ated. You will need to clean the filter more frequently if you operate the engine in very dusty areas. Clean the air cleaner every 50 hours of operation or once a season. Replace the air cleaner annually. f Electrode Porcelain Figure 12 Fastener Cover Air Filter Never start or run the engine with the air cleaner assembly or the air filter removed. NOTE: Do not use pressurized air or solvents to clean the filter. Pres- surized air can damage the filter and solvents will dissolve the filter. 1. Remove the fastener and air cleaner cover. See Figure 13. 2. Remove the pre-cleaner (if equipped) and filter. 3. To loosen debris, gently tap the filter on a hard surface, if filter is excessively dirty, replace with a new filter. Figure 13 4. Wash the pre-cleaner in liquid detergent and water and allow it to thoroughly air dry. Do not oil the pre-cleaner. 5. Assemble the dry pre-cleaner to the filter. 6. install the filter and pre-cleaner into the base. Make sure filter fits securely in the base. 7. install air filter cover and secure with fastener. Make sure the fastener is tight. 17
Check Engine Oil Check oil level before each operation. Be sure oil level is maintained. 1. Check the oil with the engine stopped and level. 2. Remove the oil fill dipstick and wipe it clean. 3. Insert and tighten dipstick. Remove it to check the oil level. 4. If the oil level is near or below the lower limit mark on the dipstick, remove the oil filler cap/dipstick, and fill with the recommended oil to the upper limit mark. Do not overfill. 5. Reinstall the oil fill dipstick. Change Engine Oil Gasoline and its vapors are extremely flammable and explosive. Fire or explosion can cause severe burns or death. Change engine oil after the first five hours of operation, and every fifty hours or once a season thereafter. lWhen drain the oil from the oil fill the fuel tank must be you top tube, empty or fuel can leak out and result in a fire or explosion. To empty the fuel tank, run the engine until it stops from lack of fuel. 1. With engine off but still warm, disconnect the spark plug wire and keep it away from the spark plug. 2. Place a suitable container next to the engine to catch the used oil. 3. Remove the oil fill dipstick and drain the oil into the container by tipping the engine toward the oil filler neck. See Figure 14. Used oil is a hazardous waste product. Dispose of used oil properly. IDo not discard with household waste. Check with your local authori- _ties or Sears Service Center for safe disposal/recycling facilities. 4. With the engine in a level position, fill to the upper limit mark on the dipstick with the recommended oil. Mumer Figure 14 Running the engine with a low oil level can cause engine damage. 5. Reinstall the oil fill dipstick securely. Clean Engine • Daily or before every use, clean grass, chaff or accumulated debris from engine. Keep linkage, spring, and controls clean. Keep area around and behind muffler free of any combustible debris. • Keeping engine clean allows air movement around engine. • Engine parts should be kept clean to reduce the risk of overheat- ing and ignition of accumulated debris. Do not use water to clean engine parts. Water could contaminate fuel system. Use a brush or dry cloth. Figure 15 LUBRICATION Blade Control Lubricate pivot points on the blade control at least once a season with light oil. This control must operate freely in both directions. See Figure 15. Wheels and Casters Lubricate the wheels and casters at least once a season with light oil (or motor oil). If wheels are removed for any reason, lubricate the axle bolt and inner surface of the wheel with light oil. See Figure 15. Grass Catcher Adapter Lubricate the torsion spring and pivot point on each end of the grass catcher adapter door at least once a season with light oil to prevent rust. See Figure 15. Transmission The transmission is pre-lubricated and sealed at the factory and does not require lubrication. 18
CLEANING DECK Clean underside of the mower deck once a season to prevent build-up of grass clippings or other debris. Follow steps below for this job. 1. Disconnect spark plug wire. Drain gasoline from lawn mower or place a piece of plastic under the gas cap. 2. Tip mower so that it rests on the housing, keeping the muffler side down. Refer to Figure 14. Hold mower firmly. Never tip the mower more than 900 in any direction and do not leave the mower tipped for any length of time. Oil can drain into the upper part of the engine causing a starting problem. 3. Scrape and clean the underside of the deck with a suitable tool. Do not spray with water. IMPORTANT: Do not use a pressure washer or garden hose to clean your unit. These may cause damage to bearings, or the engine. The use of water will result in shortened life and reduce serviceability. 4. Put the mower back on its wheels on the ground. If you had put plastic under the gas cap earlier, make sure to remove it now. REPLACING REAR FLAP To replace rear flap, proceed as follows: 1. To remove rear flap, lift rear door, remove screw, and press flap in on either side to remove from hole. See Figure 16. 2. Remove screw and flap from opposite hole and replace with new flap in the opposite order and manner of removal. ADJUSTING SHIFT LEVER CABLE Periodic adjustment of the six speed shift cable may be necessary due to normal wear on the cable. Adjustment is needed if all six speeds do not work. The adjustable cable bracket is located on the left side of the mower beside the engine. See Figure 17. 1. Start engine and place shift lever in the sixth speed position. 2. Stop engine and disconnect spark plug wire and ground it against engine. 3. Loosen hex nut which secures the adjustable cable bracket. See Figure 17. 4. Push back on the adjustable cable bracket. 5. BLADE CARE Periodically inspect the blade adapter for cracks, especially if you strike a foreign object. Replace when necessary. Follow the steps below for blade service. When removing the cutting blade for sharpening or replacement, protect your hands with a pair of heavy gloves or use a heavy rag to hold the blade. 1. Disconnect spark plug boot from spark plug. Turn mower on its side making sure that the air filter and the carburetor are facing up. 2. Remove the bolt and the blade bell support which hold the blade and the blade adapter to the engine crankshaft. See Figure 18. 3. Remove blade and adapter from the crankshaft. 4. Remove blade from the adapter for testing balance. Balance the blade on a round shaft screwdriver to check. Remove metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly. When sharpening the blade, follow the original angle of grind. Grind each cutting edge equally to keep the blade balanced. oft Figure 18 An unbalanced blade will cause excessive vibration when rotating at high speeds. It may cause damage to mower and could break causin( personal injury. 5. Lubricate the engine crankshaft and the inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil. Slide the blade adapter onto the engine crankshaft. Place the blade on the adapter such that the side of the blade marked "Bottom" (or with part number) faces the ground when the mower is in the operating position. Make sure that the blade is aligned and seated on the blade adapter flanges. 6. Place blade bell support on the blade. Align notches on the blade bell support with small holes in blade. 7. Replace hex bolt and tighten hex bolt to torque: 450 in. Ibs. rain., 600 in. Ibs. max. To ensure safe operation of your mower, periodically check the blade bolt for correct torque. BELT CARE NOTE: Several components must be removed in order to change the mower's self-propulsion drive belt. See an authorized Sears Service Center to have your belt replaced. REPLACING BATTERY Batteries contain sulfuric acid which may cause burns. Do not short I circuit or mutilate batteries in any way. Do not put batteries in fire as lthese may burst or release toxic materials. 1. Loosen star knobs securing upper and lower handles and carefully fold the upper handle down toward the lower handle as shown in Figure 19. 2. Open battery cover, remove positive and negative leads from battery, remove and replace with new battery. Connect the positive lead to the positive side of the battery pack, then connect the negative side. NOTE: The battery you have may differ slightly from the one shown in Figure 19. Refer to the Parts List. IMPORTANT: When replacing battery pack in handle panel, battery pack must be positioned with the positive terminal to the left side and the negative terminal to the right side of panel (Positive terminal is closest to the key switch). See Figure 20. Replacing battery pack incorrectly will cause serious damage. 4. Reattach battery cover to battery housing by securing with the two screws removed earlier, making sure to snap the wire conduit on the left into place on the housing. 5. Fold handles back up and tighten star knobs. Do not remove the battery pack from the electric starter housing for any reason other than replacement. Charging Battery The battery contains corrosive fluid and toxic material; handle with care and keep away from children. Do not puncture, disassemble, mutilate or incinerate the battery. Explosive gases could be vented during charging or discharging. Use in a well ventilated area, away from sources of ignition. NOTE: The special designed plug on the charger will only fit into the plug on the battery box. 1. Plug the battery charger into the port on the underside of the battery housing. See Figure 21. 2. Insert the battery charger plug into a standard 120 volt household outlet. Charge battery for 8 to 10 hours before initial use. Failure to do so may result in diminished battery life. Do not charge longer than 12 hours. The battery should only need to be charged upon initial setup and after any other extended periods of non-use. 3. After charging, disconnect charger plug from outlet first, then disconnect charger lead from battery. IMPORTANT: Always plug charger lead into battery pack lead first, and then insert battery charger plug into 120 volt standard household outlet. Follow this order of action every time you charge the battery. Use only the battery charger supplied with this mower. Figure 21 Figure 22 J Replacing Fuse The electric starter circuit and battery are protected by a 40 ampere fuse. If the fuse burns out, the electric starter will not operate. If the unit fails to start with the electric starter, perform the following steps to check the fuse inside the battery housing: 1. Open the battery cover as described in Replacing Battery. See Figure 19. 2. Remove fuse from socket and inspect as shown in Figure 22. If it is burned out, replace with standard automotive 40 ampere fuse. 3. Carefully place wiring back into housing, close battery cover, and fold upper handle back into place. NOTE: The engine can be started manually if the fuse burns out. 21
Never store lawn mower with fuel in tank indoors or in poorly ventilated areas where fuel fumes may reach an open flame, spark, or pilot light as on a furnace, water heater, clothes dryer, or gas appliance. PREPARING THE ENGINE For engines stored over 30 days: 1. To prevent gum from forming in fuel system or on carburetor parts, run engine until it stops from lack of fuel or add a gasoline additive to the gas in the tank. If you use a gas additive, run the engine for several minutes to circulate the additive through the carburetor--after which the engine and fuel can be stored up to 24 months. 2. While engine is still warm, change the oil. 3. Clean engine of surface debris. PREPARING THE LAWN MOWER • Clean and lubricate mower thoroughly as described in the lubrica- tion instructions. • Do not use a pressure washer or garden hose to clean your unit. • Coat mower's cutting blade with chassis grease to prevent rusting. • Refer to PREPARING THE ENGINE for correct engine storage instructions. • Store mower in a dry, clean area. Do not store next to corrosive materials, such as fertilizer. When storing any type of power equipment in a poorly ventilated or metal storage shed, care should be taken to rust-proof the equipment. Using a light oil or silicone, coat the equipment, especially cables and all moving parts of your lawn mower before storage. Battery The battery must be stored with a full charge. Extended storage of a discharged battery will reduce life and capacity of the battery. 22

Fill tank with clean, fresh gasoline. 4. Faulty spark plug. 4. Clean, adjust gap, or replace. 5. Engine flooded. 5. Waitafew minutesto restart. 6. Blocked fuel line. 6. Contact your Sears Parts & Repair Center to have fuel line cleaned. 7. Burnt fuse. (Electric Start only) 7. Replace fuse (see Service Section). Engine runs erratic 1. Spark plug boot loose. 1. Connect and tighten spark plug boot. 2. Stale fuel. 2. Fill tank with clean, fresh gasoline. 3. Vent in gas cap plugged. 3. Clear vent. 4. Water or dirt in fuel system. 4. Run engine until it stops from lack of fuel. Refill with fresh fuel. 5. Dirty air cleaner. 5. Refer to Air Cleaner in Engine Maintenance section. 6. Blocked fuel line. 6. Contact your Sears Parts & Repair Center to have fuel line cleaned. Engine overheats 1. Engine oil level low. 1. Fill crankcase with proper oil. 2. Air flow restricted. 2. Clean area around and on top of engine. Occasional skips (hesitates) 1. Spark plug gap too close. 1. Adjust gap to .020". Idles poorly 1. Spark plug fouled, faulty, or gap too wide. 1. Reset gap to .020" or replace spark plug. 2. Dirty air cleaner. 7. Refer to Air Cleaner in Engine Maintenance section. Excessive vibration 1. Cutting blade loose or unbalanced. 1. Tighten blade and adapter. Balance blade. 2. Bent cutting blade. 2. Replace blade. Mower will not mulch grass 1. Wet grass. 1. Do not mow when grass is wet; wait until later to cut. 2. Excessively high grass. 2. Mow once at a high cutting height, then mow again at desired height or make a narrower cutting path. 3. Dull blade. 3. Sharpen or replace blade. Uneven cut 1. Dull blade. 1. Sharpen or replace blade. Mower will not self propel 1. Belt not installed properly. 1. Check belt for proper pulley installation and movement. 2. Debris clogging drive operation. 2. In California, new small off-road engines must be designed, built and equipped to meet the State's stringent anti-smog standards. Elsewhere in the United States, new non-road, spark-ignition engines certified for model year 1997 and later must meet similar standards set forth by the U.S. EPA. Sears must warrant the emission control system on your YEAR 1997 AND LATER ENGINES WHICH ARE PURCHASED AND USED ELSEWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES (AND AFTER JANUARY 1,2001 IN CANADA). Control Defects Warranty Statement engine for the periods of time listed below, provided there has been no abuse, neglect or improper maintenance of your small off-road engine.Your emis- sion control system includes parts such as the carburetor, air cleaner, ignition system, muffler and catalytic converter. Also included may be connectors and other emission related assemblies. Where a warrantable condition exists, Sears will repair your small off-road engine at no cost to you including diagnosis, parts and labor. Sears Emission Control Defects Warranty Coverage Small off-road engines are warranted relative to emission control parts defects for a period of one year, subject to provisions set forth below. If any covered Owner's Warranty As the small off-road engine owner, you are responsible for the performance of the required maintenance listed in your Operating and Maintenance Instruc- tions. Sears recommends that you retain all your receipts covering maintenance on your small off-road engine, but Sears cannot deny warranty solely for the lack of receipts or for your failure to ensure the performance of all scheduled maintenance. As the small off-road engine owner, you should however be aware that Sears may deny you warranty coverage if your small off-road engine or a part has failed due to abuse, neglect, improper maintenance or unap- part on your engine is defective, the part will be repaired or replaced by Sears. Responsibilities proved modifications.You are responsible for presenting your small off-road engine to an Authorized Sears Service Dealer as soon as a problem exists. The undisputed warranty repairs should be completed in a reasonable amount of time, not to exceed 30 days. If you have any questions regarding your warranty rights and responsibilities, you should contact a Sears Service Representative at 1-800-469-4663. The emission warranty is a defects warranty. Defects are judged on normal engine performance.The warranty is not related to an in-use emission test. Sears Emission Control Defects Warranty Provisions The following are specific provisions relative to your Emission Control Defects Warranty Coverage. It is in addition to the Sears engine warranty for non-regulated engines found in the Operating and Maintenance Instructions. 1. Warranted Parts Coverage under this warranty extends only to the parts listed below (the emission control systems parts) to the extent these parts were present on the engine purchased. a. Length of Coverage Sears warrants to the initial owner and each subsequent purchaser that the Warranted Parts shall be free from defects in materials and workman- ship which caused the failure of the Warranted Parts for a period of one year from the date the engine is delivered to a retail purchaser. 3. No Charge Repair or replacement of any Warranted Part will be performed at no charge to the owner, including diagnostic labor which leads to the determination that a Warranted Part is defective, if the diagnostic work is performed at an Authorized Sears Service Dealer. For emissions warranty service contact your nearest Authorized Sears Service Dealer as listed in the "Yellow Pages" under "Engines, Gasoline," "Gasoline Engines," "Lawn Mowers," or similar category. 4. Claims and Coverage Exclusions Warranty claims shall be filed in accordance with the provisions of the Sears Engine Warranty Policy. Warranty coverage shall be excluded for failures of Warranted Parts which are not original Sears parts or because of abuse, neglect or improper maintenance as set forth in the Sears Engine Warranty Policy. Sears is not liable to cover failures of Warranted Parts caused by the use of add-on, non-original, or modified parts. 5. Maintenance Any Warranted Part which is not scheduled for replacement as required maintenance or which is scheduled only for regular inspection to the effect of "repair or replace as necessary" shall be warranted as to defects for the warranty period. Any Warranted Part which is scheduled for replacement as required maintenance shall be warranted as to defects only for the period of time up to the first scheduled replacement for that part. Any replacement part that is equivalent in performance and durability may be used in the performance of any maintenance or repairs. The owner is responsible for the performance of all required maintenance, as defined in the Sears Operating and Maintenance Instructions. 6. Consequential Coverage Coverage hereunder shall extend to the failure of any engine components caused by the failure of any Warranted Part still under warranty. Look For Relevant Emissions Durability Period and Air index information On Your Engine Emissions Label Engines that are certified to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Tier 2 Emission Standards must display information regarding the Emissions Durability Period and the Air Index. Sears, Roebuck and Co., U.S.A. makes this information available to the consumer on our emission labels. The Emissions Durability Period describes the number of hours of actual running time for which the engine is certified to be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenance in accordance with the Operating & Mainte- nance Instructions. The following categories are used: Moderate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 125 hours of actual engine running time. Intermediate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 250 hours of actual engine running time. Extended: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 500 hours of actual engine running time. For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to 25 hours per year. Therefore, the Emissions Durability Period of an engine with an intermediate rating would equate to 10 to 12 years. The Air Index is a calculated number describing the relative level of emissions for a specific engine family. The lower the Air Index, the cleaner the engine. This information is displayed in graphical form on the emissions label. After July 1,2000, Look For Emissions Compliance Period On Engine Emissions Compliance Label After July 1, 2000 certain Sears, Roebuck and Co., U.S.A. engines will be certified to meet the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Phase 2 emission standards. For Phase 2 certified engines, the Emis- sions Compliance Period referred to on the Emissions Compliance label indicates the number of operating hours for which the engine has been shown to meet Federal emission requirements. For engines less than 225 cc displacement, Category C = 125 hours, B = 250 hours and A = 500 hours. For engines of 225 cc or more, Category C = 250 hours, B = 500 hours and A = 1000 hours. Para seguridad, use el rnedidor de pendientes que se incluye corno parte de este manual para rnedir la pendiente antes de operar la unidad en una zona inclinada. Si la pendiente supera los 15 grados, no la pode. Haga Io siguiente: • Mueva la podadora a traves de las caras de la pendiente, nunca hacia arriba y abajo. Tenga cuidado cuando carnbie de direcci6n cuando opere la rn_.quina en pendientes. • Est_ atento a los agujeros, raices, rocas, objetos ocultos o abultarnientos que puedan provocar que se derrape o se tropiece. Mantenga alejados a los ni_os de los rnotores en rnarcha o calientes. Pueden sufrir quernaduras con un silenciador caliente. Nunca perrnita que ni_os rnenores de 14 a_os operen esta rn_.quina. Los ni_os rnayores de 14 a_os deben leer y entender las instrucciones de operaci6n y reglas de seguridad contenidas en este manual y deben ser entrenados y supervisados por sus padres. SERVIClO Manejo seguro de la gasolina: • Para evitar lesiones personales o daSos rnateriales sea surnarnente cuidadoso al rnanipular la gasolina. La gasolina es altarnente inflarnable y los vapores son explosivos. Se puede lesionar gravernente si derrarna gasolina sobre usted o sobre la ropa ya que se puede encender. • Utilice s61o recipientes para gasolina autorizados. • Nunca Ilene los contenedores en el interior de un vehiculo o carni6n o caja de carnioneta con recubrirnientos pl_.sticos. Coloque siernpre los recipientes en el piso y lejos del vehiculo antes de Ilenarlos. • Retire el equipo a gasolina del carni6n o rernolque y II_nelo en el piso. IMPORTANTE: Esta unidad se envfa sin gasolina ni aceite en el motor. Antes de comenzar o correr ia ma.quina cargue el motor con gasolina y aceite como se indica en la secci6n de operaci6n de este manual. Corte cada una de ias esquinas de la caja verticaimente, de la parte superior a la base. 2. Saque todas las piezas sueltas. 3. Quite el material de empaque suelto. C61VIO SACAR LA UNIDAD DE LA CAJA 1. Eleve la unidad desde la parte posterior para separarla del material de ia caja que quede debajo y haga rodar ia unidad fuera de ia caja. 2. Verifique cuidadosamente si en la caja queda aiguna parte suelta. Retire el material de empaque que pudiera estar entre las manijas superior e inferior. A. Tire hacia arriba y hacia atra.s ia manija superior como se muestra en la Figura 1. Asegurese de que ia manija inferior este asentada firmemente en los soportes de montaje de la manija. Asimismo, no prense los cables mientras ievanta la manija. B. Apriete las perillas estrella que sujetan la manija superior a la manija inferior. AsegQrese de que cada perno del carro est_ apropiadamente asentado en la manija. 2. Localice el pasador de horquilla que se encuentra en el pasador soldado a cada lado de la manija inferior. A. Saque el pasador de horquilla de este orificio. Con un par de pinzas, inserte el pasador de horquilla en el agujero dei pasador mas cercano ai soporte. Vea ia Figura 2. Repita dei otto iado. B. Inserte el bul6n de carro en el manual de la bolsa en el orificio superior en el soporte de montaje de la manija. Conexi6n de la colectora de c_sped La cortadora fue enviada con ia tolva de abono instalada en la unidad. Para fines de embolsado, debera, acoplar ia boisa colectora y su adaptador en lugar de la tolva de abono. 1. Conexi6n de Canal de Descarga Lateral Siga los pasos que se indican a continuaci6n para instaiar el canal de descarga lateral: 1. Extraiga la tolva de abono o el adaptador de la bolsa colectora de la unidad soltando las tuercas de mariposa. 2. Acople el canal de descarga lateral y asegure con las tres tuercas mariposa. Vea la Figura 6. AJUSTES Altura de torte La palanca de ajuste de aitura de corte se ubica por encima de la rueda izquierda trasera. Vea el recuadro de la figura 7A. 1. Tire de la palanca hacia afuera de ia cortadora. 2. Mueva la palanca hacia adelante o hacia atra.s para la altura de corte deseada. 3. Libere la palanca hacia la plataforma de ia cortadora. La altura de corte de ia rueda frontal se determina seleccionando una de las seis posiciones en el montaje de cada ruedita. Para ajustar la altura de corte frontal, consulte ia Figura 7B y reaiice Io siguiente: 1. Extraiga iatuerca de mariposa del perno del eje. Deslice el perno del eje y la arandela ondulada fuera del montaje y seleccione la altura de corte. 2. Con ia arandeia ondulada sobre el perno del eje, reinserte los elementos de ferreterfa en el orificio cuadrado deseado a traves dei montaje de la rueda y asegure con ia tuera mariposa previamente extrafda. IMPORTANTE: Todas las ruedas deben set colocadas en la misma posici6n relativa. Cuando el terreno es agreste o irregular cambie la palanca de ajuste de la altura a una posici6n ma.s alta. De esta manera se cuida ma.s el cesped. Las rueditas pueden asegurarse en posici6n directamente hacia adelante o para que giren iibremente. Vea el recuadro de la figura 7C. 1. Levantelos pasadoresdefijaci6n. 2. Col6quelos en los agujeros ma.s grandes para trabar las ruedas. Coloque los pasadores en los orificios ma.s peque_os para permitir que las ruedas giren libremente. Control de la transmisi6n La rueda de ajuste esta. ubicada en el alojamiento de la manija de control de transmisi6n y se utiliza para ajustar o aflojar la correa de transmisi6n. Debera. ajustar el control de transmisi6n en caso de que: 1. La cortadora no se autopropulsara con el control de transmisi6n engranado. 2. Las ruedas de transmisi6n de la cortadora temblaran con el control de transmisi6n engranado. Si ocurriera alguna de estas condiciones, gire la rueda de ajuste en el sentido de las agujas del reloj para ajustar yen sentido contrario alas agujas del reloj para aflojar el cable para ajustar el control de transmisi6n. El control de ia cuchiiia es un dispositivo de seguridad. Nunca intente anular su funcionamiento. PALANCA DE AJUSTE DE LA ALTURA DE CORTE La palanca de ajuste de altura de corte se ubica por encima de la rueda izquierda trasera. Para ajustar la altura de corte, consulte la Secci6n Montaje. CONTROL DE LA TRANSiVlISI6N El control de transmisi6n esta. ubicado en la manija superior. Apriete el control de la transmisi6n para engranar ei sistema de transmisi6n. Libere el control de transmisi6n para desengranar el sistema de transmisi6n. PALANCA DE CAIVIBIOS La palanca de cambios esta. ubicada en el alojamiento de control de transmisi6n sobre la manija superior. Esta palanca se utiliza para seleccionar ia velocidad de avance hacia adeiante de ia cortadora. Cuando cambie la selecci6n de velocidad, iibere el control de transmisi6n. J IMPORTANTE: Mueva ia palanca de cambios s61o cuando el motor este en marcha. Si cambia el ajuste de la palanca de cambios con el motor apagado, su cortadora puede resultar da_ada. La Nave de encendido electrico esta. ubicada en el lado izquierdo dei panel de la manija. Se la utiliza Onicamente para el encendido electrico. TOLVA DE DESCARGA LATERAL Su cortadora se envfa como abonadora. Para descargar los recortes de cesped pot el costado, siga las instrucciones de la secci6n Montaje para acoplar el canal de descarga lateral. Mantenga sus manos y pies alejados del area del canal de la plataforma de corte. Consulte la etiqueta de advertencias en la unidad. ARRANCADOR DE RETROCESO El arrancador de retroceso esta. conectado a ia variila de soporte y se ubica sobre el lado derecho de la manija inferior. Para encender la unidad col6quese detra.s de ia misma y tire de ia cuerda del arrancador de retroceso. TAPON DE GASOLINA Retire el tap6n de gasolina para agregar combustible ai tanque de combustible. Use gasolina limpia, nueva, regular, sin plomo con un octanaje mfnimo de 87. TAPON DE ACEITE/VARILLA DE iVlEDICI6N DEL NIVEL DE ACEITE Consulte ia secci6n Mantenimiento para obtener instrucciones sobre c6mo verificar el aceite. ESCUDO DE RUTA El escudo de ruta se adjunta a la parte trasera de ia ma.quina y esta. ahf para proteger al operador de escombros que vuelan. No utilice el cortacesped a menos que el escudo es totalmente funcional yen su lugar. 53
LLENADO DE GASOLINA Y ACEITE Aceite (se envia una botella junto con la unidad) Primer uso 1. Saque la varilla del nivel de aceite (G). 2. Con la cortadora de cesped ubicada en suelo nivelado, vierta el aceite bntamente pot dentro del tubo de Ilenado de aceite del motor (H) hasta la marca de limite alto en la varilla medidora del nivel de aceite (J). Vea la Figura 10. 3. Vuelva a colocar la varilla de Ilenado de aceite y ajQstela. Usos posteriores Use aceite para motor de 4 tiempos que cumpla o sobrepase los requisitos para la clasificaci6n de servicio APi SK SG, SH, SJ o equivalente. Compruebe siempre ia etiqueta de servicio API en el recipiente dei aceite para asegurarse que incluye las letras SK SG, SH, SJ o equivalente. Temperaturas ai aire libre de determinar la viscosidad dei aceite correcto para el motor. La gasolina es aitamente inflamable y explosiva y usted puede quemars_ o iesionarse gravemente ai reabastecer. Pare el motor y mantenga iejos el calor, las chispas y las llamas. Reabastezca s61o ai aire libre. Limpie inmediatamente los derrames. Siva a usar ei equipo de forma intermitente o s61o ocasionalmente, consulte ia secci6n de Aimacenamiento Fuera de Temporada para obtener ma.s informaci6n sobre el deterioro del combustible. NOTA: El combustible puede dafiar la pintura y aigunos tipos de plastico. Tenga cuidado de no derramar combustible cuando Ilena el tanque. No use nunca gasolina rancia o contaminada ni mezclas de aceite y gaso- lina. No permita que entre suciedad o agua en el tanque de combustible. 1. Quite ia tapa dei tanque de combustible. 2. Agregue combustible hasta ia parte inferior del iimite de nivel de combustible en ei tubo del tanque. No iiene de ma.s. Limpie el combustible derramado antes de arrancar el motor. 3. Nunca encienda el motor en espacios cerrados o en una zona con poca ventilaci6n. El escape del motor contiene mon6xido de carbono, un gas inodoro y ietai. PARA ENCENDER EL MOTOR 1. Col6quese detra.s de la podadora, apriete ia manija de control de la cuchilla y sostengala contra la manija superior. Vea la Figura 11. 2. Este cortacesped tiene dos sistemas iniciales separados, electricos y retroceso. Arrancador el_ctrico: Gire la liave de encendido a ia derecha para arrancar el motor. Sueite la ilave apenas arranque el motor. Arrancador de retroceso: Tome la manija del arrancador y saque la cuerda lentamente hasta que el motor alcance ei comienzo del ciclo de compresi6n (la cuerda tirara, un poco ma.s fuerte en este punto). Deje que la cuerda se enrolle lentamente. Tire de la cuerda con un golpe ra.pido y continuo de todo ei brazo. Mantenga firme la manija del arrancador, deje que la cuerda se vuelva a enrollar lentamente. De retracci6n ra.pida del cord6n de arranque (soborno) tirara, de mano y el brazo hacia el motor ma.s ra.pido de Io que puede dejar ir. Las fracturas de huesos, fracturas, contusiones o esguinces podria resultar. PARA DETENER EL MOTOR 1. Suelte la manija de control de la cuchilla para detener el motor y la cuchilla. Espere a que la cuchilla se haya detenido pot completo antes de hacer cualquier trabajo en la cortadora o de retirar el colector de cesped. USO DE LA CORTADORA DE CESPED Asegurese de que ei cesped esta. libre de piedras, palos, cables u otros objetos que pudiesen dafiar la cortadora o el motor. Dichos objetos pueden set arrojados accidentalmente pot la cortadora en cualquier direcci6n y _rovocar lesiones personales graves ai operador y a otras personas. AI operar una cortadora de cesped es posible que objetos extrafios sean arrojados a los ojos, Io cual puede dafiarlos gravemente. Utilice siempre galas de seguridad durante la operaci6n de la cortadora de cesped o mientras la ajusta o repara. 1. Una vez que el motor est_ funcionando, apriete el control de transmisi6n contra la manija superior para propulsar la podadora. Libere el control de transmisi6n para desengranar el sistema de transmisi6n. 2. Usar la palanca de cambios para seleccionar la velocidad de avance de la cortadora de cesped - 1 es la velocidad m_s baja, 6 es el m&s r&pido. Cuando la selecci6n de cambio de velocidad, suelte el control de la unidad. IMPORTANTE: Mover la palanca de cambios s61o cuando el motor est,. funcionando. Si el cesped ha crecido ma.s de 10,2 cm. (4 pulg.) no se recomienda el uso de la podadora como abonadora. En ese caso, use ei colector de cesped para embolsar los recortes. USO DEL COLECTOR DE CE_SPED Puede utilizar el colector de cesped para recoger dichos recortes mientras opera la podadora. 1. Acople el colector de cesped siguiendo las instrucciones de la secci6n de Montaje. Los recortes de cesped son recolectados en la bolsa de forma automatica a medida que pasa ia cortadora. 2. Opere ia cortadora hasta que ia bolsa colectora este iiena. 3. Detenga ei motor pot completo soltando la manija de control de la cuchiiia. Compruebe que ia unidad se haya detenido por completo. 4. Mientras sostenga la boisa colectora de pasto pot medio de la manija trasera y la manija inferior, levante la bolsa colectora para sacarla dei adaptador. La puerta del canal movera, la cuerda fuera del camino de la bolsa. 5. Continue sosteniendo ia manija inferior, eleve ia parte posterior de la bolsa colectora, y liberan el manija inferior sobre un recepta.culo apropiado. La boisa colectora se abrira, y los recortes de cesped se dispersara.n. AI volver a colocar la bolsa de cesped, asegurese de que la parte superior de la bolsa se apoye sobre el sosten del cable entre las manijas. Si golpea un objeto extrafio, detenga ei motor. RECOMENDACIONES GENERALES • Respete siempre las reglas de seguridad cuando realice tareas de mantenimiento. • La garanfia de esta cortadora no cubre elementos que han estado sujetos al mal uso o la negligencia del operador. Para recibir el reembolso total de la garantia, ei operador deberfi dar mantenimiento ai equipo tai y como se indica en este manual. • El cambio de la velocidad controlada del motor invalidarfi la garantia dei motor. • Todos los ajustes deben ser verificados pot Io menos una vez en cada estaci6n. • Revise peri6dicamente todos los sujetadores y compruebe que esten bien ajustados. MANTENIMIENTO DEL MOTOR Bujia de encendido Para un buen funcionamiento, la bujfa debe estar adecuadamente abierta y libre de dep6sitos. Reemplace la bujia anualmente. 1. Desconecte el capuch6n de la bujia y retire cualquier suciedad del firea de esta. 2. Use la Ilave de bujias del tama_o adecuado para extraerla. NOTA: Reemplazar con una Champion® RC12YC bujia. 3. Compruebe el entrehierro con un calibrador de alambre. La separaci6n correcta es 0,020 in. (0,51 mm). Vea [a Figura 12. Si es necesario, reajuste el entrehierro. 4. I nstaie y apriete [a bujia a[ par de apriete recomendado. Para el ajuste del entrehierro o el par de apriete, consulte la secci6n de Especificaciones. 5. Coloque el capuch6n de la bujia. Filtro de aire Un filtro de aire sucio restringir& el fiujo de aire al carburador y causar& el funcionamiento defectuoso del motor. Inspeccione el filtro cada vez que opere el motor. Necesitar_. limpiar con m_.s frecuencia el filtro si usted opera el motor en fireas muy poivorientas. Limpio el fiitro de aire cada 50 horas de [a operaci6n o una vez por temporada. Reemplace e[ fiitro de aire anualmente. Nunca arranque u opere el motor si removi6 el conjunto del filtro de aire o el filtro de aire. NOTA: No use aire a presi6n ni solventes para limpiar el filtro. El aire a presi6n puede daSar el filtro y los solventes pueden disolverlo. 1. Quitar el cierre y la cubierta del filtro de aire. Vea Figura 13. 6. Quite el prefiltro (De Ser equipado) y filtro. 1. Comprobar el aceite del motor Comprobar el nivel de aceite antes de cada operaci6n. Aseg_rese de que el nivei de aceite se mantiene. 1. Revise el aceite con ei motor parade y nivelado. 2. Quite ia tapa del dep6sito de aceite/varilla medidora del nivel de aceite y limpiela. 3. Coloque y ajuste la varilla indicadora. Luego quitela para revisar el nivel de aceite. 4. Si el nivel de aceite esta. cerca o pot debajo de la marca de limite bajo de la varilla medidora del nivel de aceite, quite la tapa del dep6sito de aceite/varilia medidora dei nivei de aceite y ilenelo con el aceite recomendado hasta la marca de limite superior. No Ilene de ma.s. 5. Vueiva a instalar ia tapa/variiia medidora del nivei de aceite. Cambiar el aceite del motor La gasolina y sus vapores son extrernadarnente inflarnables y explosivos. Un incendio o una explosi6n pueden causar graves quernaduras o a rnuerte. Si drena el aceite desde el tubo superior de Ilenado de aceite, el tanque de combustible debe estar vacio o de Io contrario podria presentarse una fuga de combustible que podria ocasionar un incendio o una explosi6n. Para desocupar el tanque de combustible, opere el motor hasta que se detenga por la falta de combustible. 1. Con el motor apagado pero a[3n caliente, desconecte el cable de la bujfa y rnant6ngalo a distancia de la bujia. 2. Coloque un recipiente adecuado cerca del motor para recoger el aceite usado. 3. Quite la tapa/varilla medidora del nivel de aceite y drene el aceite al recipiente inclinando el motor hacia el tube de Ilenado del aceite. Vea la Figura 14. El aceite usado es un residuo peligroso. Elimine el aceite usado adecuadamente. No Io arroje junto con los residues domiciliarios. CensuRe alas autoridades locales o al centre de servicio Sears para averiguar d6nde hay instalaciones para la eliminaci6n/reciclaje segura(o) del aceite usado. 4. Con ei motor en una posici6n nivelada, Ilene hasta ia marca de limite are en la varilla medidora del nivel de aceite con el aceite recomendado. Poner en rnarcha el motor con un nivel de aceite bajo puede causar daSos en el motor. 5. Vueiva a instaiar bien la tapa/varilla medidora del nivel de aceite. Limpie el motor Diariamente o antes de cada use, limpie el cesped, la grasa o los residues acumulados del motor. Mantenga limpios el varillaje, los resortes y los controles. Mantenga ei a.rea que rodea al silenciador y detra.s dei mismo iibre de cualquier residue combustible. El mantenimiento del motor en condiciones limpias permite el movimiento de aire airededor del mismo. Las partes dei motor se @ben mantener limpias para reducir el riesgo de sobrecalentamiento y combusti6n de los residues acumulados. No use agua para limpiar ias piezas dei motor. El agua puede contaminar el sistema de combustible. Use un cepillo o un trapo seco. 58
LUBRICACION Control de la cuchilla Lubrique con aceite ligero los puntos de pivote del control de la cuchilla al menos una vez cada estaci6n. Este controle debe funcionar libremente en ambas direcciones. Vea la Figura 15. Ruedas y rueditas Lubrique ias ruedas y rueditas una vez pot temporada con aceite iigero (o aceite para motor). Sin embargo, si las ruedas se quitan pot cualquier raz6n, debe lubricar la superficie del perno del eje y la superficie interna de la rueda con aceite iigero. Vea la Figura 15. Adaptador de colector de pasto Lubrique el resorte de torsi6n y ei punto de pivote en cada extremo de la puerta del adaptador de colector de pasto pot io menos una vez pot temporada con aceite ligero para evitar que se oxide. Vea la Figura 16. Transmisi6n La transmisi6n es prelubricada y sellada en la fa.brica y no requiere lubricaci6n. LIMPIEZA DE LA PLATAFORMA Debe limpiar la parte inferior de la plataforma de la cortadora de cesped una vez una temporada para prevenir la acumulaci6n de recortes de cesped u otros desechos. Siga los pasos que aparecen debajo para reaiizar esta tarea. 1. Desconecte el cable de la bujia. Drene la gasolina de la cortadora o coloque un trozo de pla.stico debajo del tap6n de Ilenado del combustible. 2. incline la cortadora de cesped de modo que quede apoyada sobre al alojamiento, mantenga el silenciador de costado hacia abajo. Sostenga firmemente la cortadora. Nunca incline ia cortadora de cesped ma.s de 900 en ninguna direcci6n y no deje la unidad inclinada. Se puede filtrar aceite dentro de la parte superior del motor y causar problemas de arranque. 3. Raspe y iimpie ia parte inferior de la plataforma mediante el uso de una herramienta adecuada. No la rode con agua. IMPORTANTE: No utilice una lavadora a presi6n o manguera de jardin para limpiar su unidad. Pueden producir daSos a los rodamientos o al motor. El uso de agua acortara, la vida Qtil de la ma.quina y reducira, su capacidad de servicio. 4. Vuelva a colocar ia cortadora de cesped sobre sus ruedas en el suelo. Si puso un pla.stico debajo del tap6n de Ilenado de combustible asegurese de sacarlo en este momento. CAIVIBIO DE LA ALETA TRASERA Para cambiar la aleta trasera, proceda de la siguiente manera: 1. Para quitar la tapa trasera, levante la puerta trasera, quite el tornillo, y la tapa de prensa en a arnbos lados para quitar del agujero. Vet la Figura 16. 2. AJUSTE DEL CABLE DE LA PALANCA DE CAiVIBIOS Puede set necesario reaiizar un ajuste peri6dico del cable de cambios de seis velocidades debido al desgaste normal del cable. El ajuste es necesario si las seis velocidades no funcionan bien. La mensula ajustable del cable se iocaliza sobre el lado izquierdo de la cortadora de cesped junto al motor. Vea la Figura 18. 1. Ponga en marcha el motor y coloque la palanca de cambios en la posici6n de sexta velocidad. 2. Detenga ei motor y desconecte el cable de la bujia y conectelo a tierra contra el motor. 3. Afloje la tuerca hexagonal que sujeta la mensula ajustable del cable. Vea ia Figura 18. 4. Empuje hacia atra.s la mensula ajustable del cable. 5. Ajustelatuerca hexagonal. CUIDADO DE LA CUCHILLA sostener la cuchilla. Inspeccione peri6dicamente el adaptador de la cuchiiia en busca de rajaduras, especialmente cuando golpee un objeto extra_o. Realice los reemplazos que resulten necesarios. Siga los pasos que aparecen debajo para reaiizar el mantenimiento de la cuchilla. 1. Desconecte el capuch6n del cable de la bujia. Gire la cortadora de cesped sobre ei costado y compruebe que el filtro de aire y el carburador queden mirando hacia arriba. 2. Saque el perno y el soporte de campana de ia cuchiiia que sostienen la cuchilla y el adaptador de la misma al cigQe_ai del motor. Vea la Figura 18. 3. Saque la cuchilla y el adaptador del cigQe_ai. NOTA: Quitando estos articulos, la arandela tambien pueden iiberarse de el cigQefial. Este seguro para hacer la nota de la orientaci6n de este articulo para nueva sesi6n. 4. Saque ia cuchilia del adaptador para comprobar el equilibrio. Balancee la cuchilla sobre un destornillador de eje redondo para inspeccionarla. Saque metal dei iado pesado hasta que quede bien equilibrada. Cuando afile la cuchilla, siga el a.ngulo original de la muela como guia. Afile cada horde de corte pot igual para mantener el balance de la cuchilla. I rote _ortadora de cesped I [y se puede romper, causando asi lesiones personales. Lubrique el cigQehai dei motor y ia superficie interna del adaptador de ia cuchilla con aceite iigero. Deslice el adaptador de la cuchilla sobre el cigQefial del motor. Instale ia cuchiiia en ei adaptador con el lado marcado "Bottom" (inferior) (o con el numero de parte) hacia ei piso cuando ia cortadora de cesped esta. en posici6n de funcionamiento. AsegQrese que la cuchilla quede aiineada y asentada en las bridas del adaptador. J Figura 17 Adaptadc la Mism Figura 18 J 6. Coloque ei soporte de campana de la cuchilla en ia misma. Aiinee las muescas del soporte de campana de la cuchilla con los orificios peque_os de la cuchilla. 7. Vuelva a colocar el pemo hexagonal y ajQstelo segQn los siguientes valores de torsi6n: 450 Ib-pulg como minimo, 600 Ib-pulg como ma.ximo. Para garantizar ia operaci6n segura de la cortadora de cesped, revise peri6dicamente el perno de la cuchilla para determinar siesta, bien ajustado. CUIDADO DE LA CORREA NOTA: Para cambiar la correa de paseo de la cortadora de cesped es necesario extraer varios componentes. Solicite a un centro autorizado de servicio Sears que realice el reemplazo de la correa. 6O
CAIVIBIO DE LA BATERiA f Las baterias contienen _.cido sulfOrico que puede causar quema- duras. No ponga en corto circuito ni muffle las baterias de ninguna manera. No coloque las baterias sobre fuego dado que pueden explotar o emitir materiales t6xicos. 1. Afloje las perillas en estrella que sujetan las manijas inferior y superior y con cuidado doble la manija superior hacia la manija inferior tai come se muestra en la Figura 19. 2. Retire los dos tornillos que sujetan ia cubierta de ia bateria ai alojamiento de la bateria y col6quelos al costado. Vea la Figura 19. 3. Abra ia cubierta de ia bateria, extraiga los conductores positive y negative de la bateria, saque la bateria y coloque una nueva. Conecte el conductor positive ai lade positive del paquete de bateria, luego conecte el lade negative. NOTA: La bateria que tiene puede diferir ligeramente de la que se muestra en la Figura 19. Consulte la lista de piezas. IMPORTANTE: Cuando cambie el paquete de bateria en ei panel de la manija, el paquete de bateria debe colocarse con el terminal positive hacia el lade izquierdo y ei terminal negative hacia el lade derecho dei panel (el terminal positive estfi mils cerca de la Ilave de contacto). Vea la Figura 20. El cambio incorrecto del paquete de bateria causa daSos graves. 4. Vueiva a instalar ia cubierta dei alojamiento de ia bateria y fijela con los dos tornillos que sac6 antes, asegurfindose de colocar a presi6n el conducto de alambre a la izquierda en su lugar en el alojamiento. 5. Doble las manijas hacia arriba y apriete la perillas en estrella. No quite el paquete de baterias del alojamiento del arrancador el_ctrico por ninguna raz6n que no sea el reemplazo. Carga de la bateria La bateria contiene fluido corrosivo y material t6xico; se debe manipular con cuidado y mantener a los ni_os alejados. No perfore, desensamble, muffle o prenda fuego a la bateria. Durante la carga o descarga se podrian emitir gases explosivos. Utilicela en un _.rea bien ventilada, lejos de fuentes de ignici6n. NOTA: La clavija de conexi6n especialmente dise_ada del cargador Qnicamente encaja en la caja de las baterias. 1. Enchufe el cargador de ia bateria dentro del orificio en la parte inferior del alojamiento de la bateria. Vea la Figura 21. 2. Inserte el enchufe del cargador de baterias en un tomacorriente residenciai comQn de 120 voitios. Cargue ia bateria de 8 a 10 horas antes de usar ia unidad per primera vez. Si no io hace se puede reducir ia duraci6n de ia bateria. No cargue pot mils de 12 horas, La bateria Qnicamente necesitarfi cargarse en el ajuste iniciai y luego de periodos prolongados sin uso. 3.
