Alwa ys handle with care and wear substantial foot wear when operating this dethatcher . • Do not allow an yone to ride or sit on the dethatcher , lawns weeper or towing v ehicle. • K eep the area of operation clear of all persons, par ticular ly small children, and also pets. • Alwa ysbeginwiththetransmissioninrst(low)gear and engine at low speed, and g radually increase speed as conditions permit. • V ehicle braking and stability may be aff ected with the attachment of this equipment. Be aw are of changing conditions on slopes. Ref er to safety rules in the vehicle o wner's manual concer ning safe oper ation on slopes. ST A Y OFF OF STEEP SLOPES. • Alwa ys operate up and down a slope, ne ver across the f ace of a slope • This equipment should be operated at reduced speed on rough terrain, along creeks and ditches and on hillsides, to pre vent tipping and loss of control. Do not drive too close to a creek or a ditch. • F ollow the maintenance instructions as outlined in this owners manual. Look for this symbol to point out impor tant safety precautions. 4 ASSEMBL Y FIGURE 1 NOTE:   On s weepers smaller than 42", use only ve spring tines. • Assemble a vin yl cap onto each end of the frame tube. Seegure1. FIGURE 2 • Assemble a 1/2" w asher , the wheel, another 1/2" washer and the 1/2" plain jam n ut onto the  1/2"x3-1/2"he xbolt. Seegure2. • Inser t the bolt through the welded brac ket and assemble the 1/2" n ylock jam n ut onto the bolt. Adjust the nuts so that there is no end pla y in the wheel and then tighten the nuts securely against the welded brac ket. Mak e sure the wheel still tur ns freely . Lay out all par ts and hardware and identify using the illustrations on pages 3 and 4. • T urntheframeassemblyassho wningure1. • Assemble se ven spring tines to the top of the frame tube. Usea5/16"x1-1/2"he xbolt,two3/8"at washers and a 5/16" n ylock nut f or each spr ing tine. 5 FIGURE 5 • Connect the s weeper to the tractor . Set the s weeper height adjustment handle to about the middle of it's adjustment range . • Place the dethatcher in front of the s weeper housing, underneath the hitch tubes. • Connect the dethatcher to the conduit clamps using two 5/16" x 1-3/8" cle vis pins, 5/16" washers and  3/32"haircotterpins. Seegure4. CONDUIT CLAMP TRANSPORT HOOK FIGURE 3 • Assemble a conduit clamp onto each end of the s weeper height adjustment tube so that the straight par toftheclampisontopofthetube. Seegure3. • Remov e the hitch brack ets and the bolts, if present, from the ends of the s weeper's hitch tubes. Slide the transpor t hook onto the L.H. hitch tube as shown in gure3. • Reassemble the hitch br ack ets and bolts to the hitch tubes. Ref er to your s weeper owner's man ual. 3/32" HAIR CO TTER PIN 5/16" W ASHER 5/16" x 1-3/8" CLEVIS PIN HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT MIDDLE SETTING If you have a 30" sweeper , skip these steps. • Make sure the s weeper height adjustment handle is still set to about the middle of it's adjustment range . • Center the dethatcher with the s weeper . • Assemble the k eeper brack ets (bend to the inside) to the s weeper's hitch tube, outside of the conduit clamps. Use a u-bolt and two 1/4" n ylock n uts per brac ket. P osition the keeper br ack ets against the sides of the conduit clamps, appro ximately per pendicular to the ground. Tighten the nuts without bending the keeperbr ack ets. Seegure5. KEEPER BRA CKET U-BOL T 1/4" NYLOCK NUT FIGURE 4 FIGURE 6 • Lift the front of the dethatcher and secure it in transpor tpositionusingthetranspor thook. Seegure 6. • T o k eep the transpor t hook from sliding back along the hitch tube, y ou can f asten the supplied nylon tie around the hitch tube behind the transpor t hook. 6 OPERA TION HOW T O USE YOUR DETHA TCHER RAISING/LOWERING THE DETHA TCHER • T o r aise the dethatcher for tr anspor t, lift up on the front of the dethatcher and secure it with the transpor t hook. Lower the dethatcher b y releasing the transpor t hook. SETTING THE OPERA TING POSITION • The operating height of the dethatcher is controlled by the gauge wheel at the front of the dethatcher and is not adjustable . The correct wheel position wasdeterminedingure2whenyouassemb ledthe wheel. • Set the s weeper to the desired operating height. (The best height is usually with the brushes set about 1/2" down into the gr ass.) Ref er to your s weeper owner's manual f or sweeper . USING THE DETHA TCHER Regular remov al of thatch is cr itical to the maintenance of a health y lawn. Thatch is la yer of stems , clippings, runners, roots and leav es that hav e not decay ed. Excessive thatch pre vents air , water and f er tilizer from reaching the roots. The dethatcher will eff ectively dislodge e xcessive thatch from y our lawn. • Star t with the tractor in low gear . V ar y the forw ard speed to determine the best speed for maximum dethatcher perf or mance. • Use a crisscross patter n to achiev e the most ev en remov al of thatch. • On slopes, alw ays oper ate in an up and down direction only . • A void e xtremely shar p tur ns. • A void towing the dethatcher across sudden steep dips in the ground while dethatching. Loss of ground contact with the gauge wheel could cause the dethatcher to be pulled back underneath the sw eeper .
