NO TE: All spike disks should f ace the same direction. ⢠Ne xt, star ting with a spike disk, assemb le sev en spik e disksîandîsixîlongîspacersîontoîtheîaxle. îSeeîîgureî4. ⢠Finally , assemble a spring, a spike disk and a shor t spacer onto the axle. Push the end of the axle through theîsecondîendîplate. îSeeîîgureî4. TOOLS REQUIRED FOR ASSEMBL Y (2) 1/2" open or bo x ed end wrench (1) Hammer La y out and identify all par ts and hardware as shown in Car ton Contents and Hardware P ack illustrations. ⢠Assemble the tw o frame angles (one with the bend up and the other with the bend down) to the tw o end plates using eight 5/16" x 3/4" he x bolts and eight 5/16" nyloc k nuts. Make sure that the frame is squared up , and then tighten . îSeeîîgureî1. ⢠Using a hammer , drive a spring pin into a hole in the axle until the pin just e xtends through the other side ofîtheîaxle. îNext,îassemb leîaîîangedîbearingîontoîtheî axleîasîshown. îSeeîîgureî2. The spring pins secure the axle in the frame and should alsoîpre ventîtheîaxleîfromîrotating. îSeeîîgureî5. FLANGED BEARING SPRING PIN ⢠Tighten îtheîboltsîassemb ledîinîîgureî6. Tighten îtheîboltsîassemb ledîinîîgureî7. Tighten îtheîboltsîassemb ledîinîîgureî8. ⢠Attach the aerator to y our tractor using the hitch pin and the hair cotter pin.
6 OPERA TION CAUTION: Spike disks ha v e shar p points. Exercise caution at all times when using the aerator . BEFORE USING YOUR AERA TOR ⢠DO NOT attempt to aerate if ground is m uddy . ⢠If ground is e xtremely hard or dr y , it is recommended that it be watered do wn for 1 or 2 hours prior to use. ⢠Mow la wn and remov e loose clippings prior to use of lawn aer ator . ⢠Attach the aerator to the tractor hitch and chec k to see that the aerator is le v el. Adjust b y loosening the bolts which f asten the hitch mount ar ms to the hitch arm mount brackets . Raise or lower the position of the armsîuntilîtheîaeratorîisîlev el. îSeeîîgureî9. HOW TO USE YOUR AERA TOR Aerating cuts small holes in the soil to create reservoirs that bring oxygen, f er tilizer and w ater into the root zone . F or best performance of the spike aer ator attachment, the f ollowing la wn preparation and operation is recommended. ⢠Star t tractor engine with controls in neutral and place throttle at slow engine speed. ⢠Engage shift le ver into lo west possible f orw ard speed and increase speed as conditions permit. ⢠Aerate in the straightest line possib le, making ov erlapping passes to increase spike point pattern. ⢠T o pre vent la wn damage, a void sharp tur ns. ⢠On sloped lawns aer ate in up and down direction. DO NOT aerate across the f ace of slopes. ⢠T o increase spike point depth penetr ation add weight as required. The aerator frame holds up to three concrete bloc ks at appro ximately 35 pounds each. Before each use After each use Every season Before stor age CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES ⢠Read and f ollow the maintenance schedule and the maintenance procedures listed in this section. ⢠Spiker points can be sharpened with a small grinder periodically to maintain good penetration. Spik e disks should be remov ed to shar pen points . ⢠Bef ore each use check nuts and bolts f or tightness . ⢠Clean after each use. If rust appears on shield or spikes , sand lightly and coat with enamel paint. ⢠Lubricate the spike disk hubs with a small amount of light oil or grease at the beginning of each season. ⢠Alwa ys store in dry area when not in use. Spik e disks should be remov ed to shar pen points . ⢠Bef ore each use check nuts and bolts f or tightness . ⢠Clean after each use. If rust appears on shield or spikes , sand lightly and coat with enamel paint. ⢠Lubricate the spike disk hubs with a small amount of light oil or grease at the beginning of each season. ⢠Alwa ys store in dry area when not in use.
