9 BATTERY INSTALL A TION W A RNIN G : To avoid el ectric shock, disconnect the test leads from a ny source of voltage before removing the batter y door. 1. Disconnect the test leads from the meter. 2. Remove the prot ective rubber holster (if ins talled). 3. Open the batter y door by loosening the screw using a Phillips head screwd river. 4. Insert the batter y into battery holder, observing the correct polarit y . 5. Put the battery d oor back in place. Secure with the screw. W A RNIN G: To avoid electric sh o ck, do not operate the meter until the battery door is in place and fastened securel y . NOTE : If your m eter does not work proper ly, check the fuses and batteries to make sure that the y are still good and that they are pro perly inserted.
10 OPERATING INSTRUCTI ONS W A RNIN G : Risk of electrocution. H igh-voltage circuits, both AC and DC, are very dangero us and should be measured with g reat care. 1. AL WAYS turn the function switch to the OFF position when the m eter is not in use. 2. If âOL â appears in the display duri ng a measurement, the value exc eeds the range you h ave selected. Change to a higher range. NOTE : On some low AC a nd DC voltage ranges, w ith the tes t leads not connected to a d evice, the display ma y show a ran dom, changing reading. This is normal and is caused by the high-input se nsitivity. The reading will stabilize and give a prope r measurement when conn ected to a circuit. DC VOL T A G E MEASUREMENTS CAUTION: Do not measure DC voltages if a motor on the circuit is being switched ON or OFF. Large volta ge surges may occur that can damage the meter. 1. Set the function switch to the highest V DC position. 2. Insert the black test lea d banana plug into the negative (COM) j ack. Insert the red test lea d banana plug into the positive (V) j ack. 3. Touch the black test pr obe tip to the negative side of the circuit. Touch the red te st probe tip to the positive side of the circuit. 4. Read the voltage in the display. Reset the function switch to successively lower V DC positions to obtain a higher resolution reading. The display will indicate the prop er decimal point and value . If the polarity is reversed, t he display will show (-) minus before th e value.
1 1 AC VOL T A GE MEASUREMENTS W A RNIN G: Risk of Electrocutio n. The probe tips may not be long enough to contac t the live parts inside some 240V ou tlets for appliances because the con tacts are recessed de ep in the outlets. As a result, the read ing may show 0 volts when the outlet a ctually has voltage on it. Make sure t he probe tips are touching the me tal contacts inside the outlet before a ssuming that no voltage is pres ent. CAUTION: Do not measure AC voltages if a m otor on the circuit is being switched ON or OFF. Large volta ge surges may occur that can damage the meter. 1. Set the function switch to the highest V AC po sition. 2. Insert the black test lea d banana plug into the negative (COM) j ack. Insert red test lead banana plug into the positive (V) jack. 3. Touch the black test prob e tip to the negative side of the circuit. Touch the red te st probe tip to the positiv e side of the circuit. 4. Read the voltage in the display. Reset the function switch to successiv ely lower V AC p ositions to obtain a higher resolutio n reading. The di splay will indicate the proper decimal p oint and value.
12 DC CURRENT MEASUREMENTS CAUTION: Do not m ake current measurements o n the 10A scale for longer than 30 s econds. Exceeding 30 seconds ma y cause damag e to the meter and/or the test leads. 1. Insert the black test lea d banana plug into the neg ative (COM) jack. 2. For current meas urements up to 200mA DC, set th e function switch to the h ighest DC mA position and insert the red tes t lead banana plug into the (mA) jack. 3. For current meas urements up to 10A DC, set the function switch to the 10A rang e and insert the red test lead banana plug i nto the (10A) jack. 4. Remove power fro m the circuit under test, then op en up the circuit at the point where you wish to measure current. 5. Touch the black test prob e tip to the negative side of the circuit. Touch the red te st probe tip to the positive side of the circuit. 6. Apply power to t he circuit. 7. Read the current i n the display. For mA DC measurements, re set the function switch to s uccessively lower mA DC positions to obtain a higher resolution reading. The displa y will indicate the prope r decimal point and value.
13 RESIST A NC E MEASUREMENTS W A RNIN G: To avoid elect ric shock, disconnect power to the unit under test and discharge al l capacitors before taking any resistance measurements. R emove the batteries and unplug the line cords. 1. Set the function switch to the highest $# position . 2. Insert the black test lea d banana plug into the negative (COM) j ack Insert the red test lea d banana plug into the positive $ ja ck. 3. Touch the test pr obe tips across the circuit or part under test. It is best to disconnect one side of the part unde r test so the rest of t he circuit will not interfere with the resistance reading. 4. Read the resistance i n the display and then set the function switc h to the lowest $ position t hat is greater than the actual or any anticipated resistance. T he display will indicate the prop er decimal point and value. CONTINUITY C HECK W A RNIN G: To avoid elec tric shock, never measure continuity on circuits or wires that have voltage on them. 1. Set the function switch to the position. 2. Insert the black lead ban ana plug into the negative (COM) j ack Insert the red test lea d banana plug into the positive ( $) jac k. 3. Touch the test probe tips to the circuit or wire you wish to chec k. 4. If the resistance is less than approximatel y 30 $, the audible sign al will sound. If the circuit is open, the displa y w ill indicate â1â .
14 DIODE TEST 1. Insert the black test lea d banana plug into the negative COM jack and the red test lead banana plug into the posi tive diode jack. 2. Turn the rota ry switch to the / â¢))) position. 3. Touch the test probes to the d iode under test. Forward voltage w ill indicate 4 00 to 700mV. Reverse voltage w ill indicate â Iâ. Shorted devices will indicate near 0m V. Shorted devices w ill indicate near 0m V and an open device will indicate â Iâ in bot h polarities. BATTERY TEST 1. Insert the black test lea d banana plug into the neg ative COM jack and the red test lead banana plug into the positive V jack. 2. Select the 1.5V or 9V B AT position using the function select switch. 3. Connect the red t est lead to the positiv e side of the 1.5V or 9V b attery and the black test lead to the negative side of the 1.5V o r 9V battery. 4. Read the voltage in the display. Good Weak Bad 9V battery: >8.2V 7.2 to 8.2V <7.2V 1.5V battery: >1.35V 1.22 to 1.35V <1.22V
15 MAINTENANCE W A RNIN G : To avoid ele ctric shock, disconnect the test leads fro m any source of voltage before removing the back cover or the batte ry or fu se doors. W A RNIN G: To avoid electric sh o ck, do not operate your meter until the battery and fuse doors are in place and fastene d securely. This MultiMeter is de signed to provide years o f dependable service, if the following care instructions are perf ormed: 1. KEEP THE METER DRY . If it gets wet, wipe it off. 2. USE AND STORE THE METER IN NORMAL TEMP ERA TURES. Temperature e xtremes can shorten the life of the e lectronic parts and distort or melt pla stic parts. 3. HANDLE THE METER GE NTLY AND CAREFUL LY. Dropping it can damage the elect ronic parts or the case. 4. KEEP THE METE R CLEAN. Wipe the case occasionall y with a damp cloth. DO NOT u se chemicals, cleaning solvents, or detergents . 5. USE ONLY FRES H BATTERIES OF THE REC OMMENDED SIZE AND TYPE. Re move old or weak batteries so they do not leak and damage the unit. 6. IF THE METE R IS TO BE STORED F OR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, the batteries should be removed to prevent damage t o the unit.
16 REPL A CI NG THE BATTERIES W A RNIN G : To avoid el ectric shock, disconnect the test leads from a ny source of voltage before removing the batter y door. 1. When the batteries becom e exhausted or drop below the ope rating voltage, âBATâ wi ll appear in the right-hand side of the LCD display. The batteries should be replaced. 2. Follow instructions fo r installing batteries. See the Bat tery Installation section of this manual. 3. Dispose of the old batteries prope rly. W A RNIN G: To avoid electric sh o ck, do not operate your meter until the battery door is in place and fastened securel y . REPL A CI NG THE FUSES W A RNIN G : To avoid el ectric shock, disconnect the test leads from a ny source of voltage before removing the fuse door. 1. Disconnect the test l eads from the meter and any item under test. 2. Remove the prot ective rubber holster. 3. Open the fuse do or by loosening the screw on the door using a Phillips head screwdriver. 4. Remove the old f use from its holder by gentl y pulling it out. 5. Install the new fuse into th e holder. 6. Always use a fuse of the pro per size and value (0.2A/2 50V fast blow for the 200mA ra nge, 10A/250V fast blow for the 10A range). 7. Put the fuse doo r back in place. Insert the scre w and tighten it securely. W A RNIN G : To avoid electric shoc k, do not operate your meter until the fuse door is in place and f astened securely. 17 TROUBLESHOOTING There may be times when your meter does not operate p roperly. Here are some common proble ms that you may have and so me easy solutions to them. Meter Does Not Operate: 1. Always read all the instructions in this manual before use. 2. Check to be sure the batt eries are properl y installed. 3. Check to be sure the batt eries are good. 4. If the batte ry is good and the meter still do es not operate, check to be sure that both en ds of the fuse are proper ly installed. If You Do Not Understand How the Meter Works: 1. 21 OPERATING INSTRUC TIONS AC VOL T A GE DETECTION To check for the presence of AC electrical vo ltage in an outlet: 1. T ouch the p robe tip to a cord plugged into the outlet, or insert the p robe tip into all the out let holes. 2. If AC electrical voltage is present, the detec tor light will flash and the audible warning will sound. NOTE: Random beep s and flashes due to detection of static charges are normal. Detectio n of âliveâ conductors w ill produce a stea dy flash and beep. W A RNIN G : Risk of Electrocution. 9 BATTERY INSTALL A TION W A RNIN G : To avoid el ectric shock, disconnect the test leads from a ny source of voltage before removing the batter y door. 1. Disconnect the test leads from the meter. 2. Remove the prot ective rubber holster (if ins talled). 3. Open the batter y door by loosening the screw using a Phillips head screwd river. 4. Insert the batter y into battery holder, observing the correct polarit y . 5. Put the battery d oor back in place. Secure with the screw. W A RNIN G: To avoid electric sh o ck, do not operate the meter until the battery door is in place and fastened securel y . NOTE : If your m eter does not work proper ly, check the fuses and batteries to make sure that the y are still good and that they are pro perly inserted.
10 OPERATING INSTRUCTI ONS W A RNIN G : Risk of electrocution. H igh-voltage circuits, both AC and DC, are very dangero us and should be measured with g reat care. 1. AL WAYS turn the function switch to the OFF position when the m eter is not in use. 2. If âOL â appears in the display duri ng a measurement, the value exc eeds the range you h ave selected. Change to a higher range. NOTE : On some low AC a nd DC voltage ranges, w ith the tes t leads not connected to a d evice, the display ma y show a ran dom, changing reading. This is normal and is caused by the high-input se nsitivity. The reading will stabilize and give a prope r measurement when conn ected to a circuit. DC VOL T A G E MEASUREMENTS CAUTION: Do not measure DC voltages if a motor on the circuit is being switched ON or OFF. Large volta ge surges may occur that can damage the meter. 1. Set the function switch to the highest V DC position. 2. Insert the black test lea d banana plug into the negative (COM) j ack. Insert the red test lea d banana plug into the positive (V) j ack. 3. Touch the black test pr obe tip to the negative side of the circuit. Touch the red te st probe tip to the positive side of the circuit. 4. Read the voltage in the display. Reset the function switch to successively lower V DC positions to obtain a higher resolution reading. The display will indicate the prop er decimal point and value . If the polarity is reversed, t he display will show (-) minus before th e value.
1 1 AC VOL T A GE MEASUREMENTS W A RNIN G: Risk of Electrocutio n. The probe tips may not be long enough to contac t the live parts inside some 240V ou tlets for appliances because the con tacts are recessed de ep in the outlets. As a result, the read ing may show 0 volts when the outlet a ctually has voltage on it. Make sure t he probe tips are touching the me tal contacts inside the outlet before a ssuming that no voltage is pres ent. CAUTION: Do not measure AC voltages if a m otor on the circuit is being switched ON or OFF. Large volta ge surges may occur that can damage the meter. 1. Set the function switch to the highest V AC po sition. 2. Insert the black test lea d banana plug into the negative (COM) j ack. Insert red test lead banana plug into the positive (V) jack. 3. Touch the black test prob e tip to the negative side of the circuit. Touch the red te st probe tip to the positiv e side of the circuit. 4. Read the voltage in the display. Reset the function switch to successiv ely lower V AC p ositions to obtain a higher resolutio n reading. The di splay will indicate the proper decimal p oint and value.
12 DC CURRENT MEASUREMENTS CAUTION: Do not m ake current measurements o n the 10A scale for longer than 30 s econds. Exceeding 30 seconds ma y cause damag e to the meter and/or the test leads. 1. Insert the black test lea d banana plug into the neg ative (COM) jack. 2. For current meas urements up to 200mA DC, set th e function switch to the h ighest DC mA position and insert the red tes t lead banana plug into the (mA) jack. 3. For current meas urements up to 10A DC, set the function switch to the 10A rang e and insert the red test lead banana plug i nto the (10A) jack. 4. Remove power fro m the circuit under test, then op en up the circuit at the point where you wish to measure current. 5. Touch the black test prob e tip to the negative side of the circuit. Touch the red te st probe tip to the positive side of the circuit. 6. Apply power to t he circuit. 7. Read the current i n the display. For mA DC measurements, re set the function switch to s uccessively lower mA DC positions to obtain a higher resolution reading. The displa y will indicate the prope r decimal point and value.
13 RESIST A NC E MEASUREMENTS W A RNIN G: To avoid elect ric shock, disconnect power to the unit under test and discharge al l capacitors before taking any resistance measurements. R emove the batteries and unplug the line cords. 1. Set the function switch to the highest $# position . 2. Insert the black test lea d banana plug into the negative (COM) j ack Insert the red test lea d banana plug into the positive $ ja ck. 3. Touch the test pr obe tips across the circuit or part under test. It is best to disconnect one side of the part unde r test so the rest of t he circuit will not interfere with the resistance reading. 4. Read the resistance i n the display and then set the function switc h to the lowest $ position t hat is greater than the actual or any anticipated resistance. T he display will indicate the prop er decimal point and value. CONTINUITY C HECK W A RNIN G: To avoid elec tric shock, never measure continuity on circuits or wires that have voltage on them. 1. Set the function switch to the position. 2. Insert the black lead ban ana plug into the negative (COM) j ack Insert the red test lea d banana plug into the positive ( $) jac k. 3. Touch the test probe tips to the circuit or wire you wish to chec k. 4. If the resistance is less than approximatel y 30 $, the audible sign al will sound. If the circuit is open, the displa y w ill indicate â1â .
14 DIODE TEST 1. Insert the black test lea d banana plug into the negative COM jack and the red test lead banana plug into the posi tive diode jack. 2. Turn the rota ry switch to the / â¢))) position. 3. Touch the test probes to the d iode under test. Forward voltage w ill indicate 4 00 to 700mV. Reverse voltage w ill indicate â Iâ. Shorted devices will indicate near 0m V. Shorted devices w ill indicate near 0m V and an open device will indicate â Iâ in bot h polarities. BATTERY TEST 1. Insert the black test lea d banana plug into the neg ative COM jack and the red test lead banana plug into the positive V jack. 2. Select the 1.5V or 9V B AT position using the function select switch. 3. Connect the red t est lead to the positiv e side of the 1.5V or 9V b attery and the black test lead to the negative side of the 1.5V o r 9V battery. 4. Read the voltage in the display. Good Weak Bad 9V battery: >8.2V 7.2 to 8.2V <7.2V 1.5V battery: >1.35V 1.22 to 1.35V <1.22V

16 REPL A CI NG THE BATTERIES W A RNIN G : To avoid el ectric shock, disconnect the test leads from a ny source of voltage before removing the batter y door. 1. When the batteries becom e exhausted or drop below the ope rating voltage, âBATâ wi ll appear in the right-hand side of the LCD display. The batteries should be replaced. 2. Follow instructions fo r installing batteries. See the Bat tery Installation section of this manual. 3. Dispose of the old batteries prope rly. W A RNIN G: To avoid electric sh o ck, do not operate your meter until the battery door is in place and fastened securel y . REPL A CI NG THE FUSES W A RNIN G : To avoid el ectric shock, disconnect the test leads from a ny source of voltage before removing the fuse door. 1. Disconnect the test l eads from the meter and any item under test. 2. Remove the prot ective rubber holster. 3. Open the fuse do or by loosening the screw on the door using a Phillips head screwdriver. 4. Remove the old f use from its holder by gentl y pulling it out. 5. Install the new fuse into th e holder. 6. Always use a fuse of the pro per size and value (0.2A/2 50V fast blow for the 200mA ra nge, 10A/250V fast blow for the 10A range). 7. Put the fuse doo r back in place. Insert the scre w and tighten it securely. W A RNIN G : To avoid electric shoc k, do not operate your meter until the fuse door is in place and f astened securely. 17 TROUBLESHOOTING There may be times when your meter does not operate p roperly. Here are some common proble ms that you may have and so me easy solutions to them. Meter Does Not Operate: 1. Always read all the instructions in this manual before use. 2. Check to be sure the batt eries are properl y installed. 3. Check to be sure the batt eries are good. 4. If the batte ry is good and the meter still do es not operate, check to be sure that both en ds of the fuse are proper ly installed. If You Do Not Understand How the Meter Works: 1. T ouch the p robe tip to a cord plugged into the outlet, or insert the p robe tip into all the out let holes. 2. If AC electrical voltage is present, the detec tor light will flash and the audible warning will sound. NOTE: Random beep s and flashes due to detection of static charges are normal.
