Stop machine if anyone enters the area. Exercise cautionto avoid slipping or falling,especially when operating in reverse. PREPARATION Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used. Remove all doormats, newspapers, sleds, boards, wires and other foreign objects,whichcould be tripped over or thrownby the auger/ impeller. Always wear safetyglasses or eye shieldsduringoperation and while performing an adjustment or repair to protect your eyes. Thrownobjects which ricochet can cause seriousinjury to the eyes. Do not operate without wearing adequate winterouter garments. Do not wear jewelry, long scarvesor other loose clothing, which could become entangled in movingparts. Wear footwear which will improve footing on slipperysurfaces. Usea grounded three-wire extension cord and receptacle for all machines with electric start engines. Disengage all controlleversbefore starting the engine. Adjust collector housing height to clear gravel or crushedrock surfaces. Never attemptto make any adjustments while engineis running, except where specifically recommended in the operator's manual. Let engineand machineadjustto outdoor temperature before starting to clear snow. 3
Safe Handling of Gasoline To avoid personal injury or propertydamage use extreme care in handling gasoline.Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vaporsare explosive. Serious personal injury can occurwhen gasoline is spilled on yourself or your clothes whichcan ignite. Washyour skin and change clothes immediately. • Useonly an approved gasoline container. • Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other sources of ignition. • Neverfuel machineindoors. • Neverremove gas cap or add fuel while the engineis hot or running. • Allow engine to cool at leasttwo minutes before refueling. • Neverover fill fuel tank. Fill tank to no more than 1/2 inch below bottom of filler neckto provide spacefor fuel expansion. • Replace gasoline cap and tightensecurely. • If gasoline is spilled,wipe it off the engineand equipment. Movemachine to another area. Wait5 minutes before starting the engine. • Neverstorethe machine or fuel container inside where there is an open flame, sparkor pilot light (e.g.furnace, waterheater, space heater, clothes dryer etc.). • Allow machine to cool at least5 minutes before storing. • Neverfill containers inside a vehicleor on a truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner. Always place containers on the groundawayfromyour vehicle before filling. • If possible, remove gas-powered equipment from the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground. If this is not possible, then refuel such equipment on a trailer with a portable container, rather than from a gasoline dispenser nozzle. • Keepthe nozzlein contactwith the rim of the fuel tank or container openingat all times until fueling is complete. Do not use a nozzlelock-open device. OPERATION • Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts, in the auger/impeller housing or chuteassembly. Contactwith the rotatingpartscan amputate hands and feet. • The auger/impeller control lever is a safetydevice. Never bypass its operation.Doing so makes the machine unsafeand may cause personal injury. • The control leversmust operate easilyin both directions and automatically return to the disengaged positionwhen released. • Neveroperate with a missing or damaged chuteassembly. Keep all safetydevices in place and working. • Neverrun an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorlessand deadly gas. • Do not operate machine while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. • Muffler and engine becomehot and can causea burn. Do not touch. Keepchildren away. • Exercise extreme cautionwhen operating on or crossing gravel surfaces. Stay alert for hidden hazards or traffic. • Exercise cautionwhen changing directionand while operating on slopes. • Planyour snow-throwing pattern to avoid dischargetowards windows, walls, cars etc. Thus, avoiding possible property damage or personal injury causedby a ricochet. • Never direct discharge at children,bystanders and petsor allow anyone in front of the machine. • Do not overload machine capacityby attempting to clear snowat too fast of a rate. • Never operate this machine without goodvisibility or light. Always be sure of your footingand keep a firm hold on the handles. Walk, never run. • Disengage power to the auger/impeller when transporting or not in use. • Never operate machine at high transport speedson slippery surfaces. Look down and behind and use care when backingup. • If the machineshould start to vibrateabnormally, stop the engine, disconnect the spark plugwire and groundit againstthe engine. Inspect thoroughly for damage.Repair any damage before starting and operating. • Disengage all controlleversand stop enginebefore you leave the operating position(behindthe handles). Wait until the auger/ impeller comes to a complete stop before unclogging the chute assembly, making any adjustments, or inspections. • Never put your hand in the discharge or collector openings.Do not unclog chuteassemblywhile engineis running. Shut off engineand remain behindhandles until all moving parts have stoppedbefore unclogging. • Useonly attachments and accessories approved by the manufac- turer (e.g.wheel weights, tire chains, cabsetc.). • When starting engine, pull cord slowly until resistance is felt, then pull rapidly.Rapid retraction of starter cord (kickback) will pull hand and arm towardenginefaster than you can let go. Broken bones,fractures, bruisesor sprains could result. • If situations occur whichare not coveredin this manual, use care and good judgment. ContactCustomer Support for assistance and the name of your nearest servicing dealer. CLEARING A CLOGGED DISCHARGE CHUTE Hand contactwith the rotating impeller inside the discharge chute is the most common causeof injury associated with snowthrowers. Never use your hand to clean out the dischargechute. To clear the chute: 1. SHUT THE ENGINE OFF! 2. Wait 10seconds to be sure the impeller blades have stopped rotating. 3. Always use a clean-out tool, not your hands. 4
MAINTENANCE & STORAGE • Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Check their properoperation regularly. Referto the maintenance and adjustment sectionsof this manual. • Before cleaning,repairing, or inspecting machine disengage all controlleversand stop the engine. Wait until the auger/impeller cometo a complete stop. Disconnect the sparkplug wire and groundagainstthe engine to prevent unintended starting. Check boltsand screws for propertightnessat frequent intervals to keep the machine in safe working condition. Also, visually inspect machine for any damage. Do not change the engine governor setting or over-speed the engine. The governor controls the maximum safeoperating speed of the engine. Snow thrower shaveplatesand skid shoesare subject to wear and damage.For your safetyprotection, frequently check all components and replace with originalequipment manufacturer's (OEM) parts only."Use of parts whichdo not meetthe original equipment specifications may leadto improper performance and compromise safety!" Check controlleversperiodically to verify they engageand disen- gage properly and adjust, if necessary. Referto the adjustment section inthis operator's manual for instructions. Maintain or replace safetyand instruction labels,as necessary. • Observeproperdisposallawsand regulations for gas, oil, etc. to protect the environment. Priorto storing, run machine a few minutes to clear snowfrom machine and prevent freezeup of auger/impeller. Neverstorethe machineor fuel container inside where there is an open flame, spark or pilot light such as a waterheater, furnace, clothes dryer etc. Always refer to the operator's manual for proper instructions on off-season storage. Check fuel line, tank, cap,and fittings frequently for cracksor leaks. Replaceif necessary. Do not crank enginewith spark plug removed. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA), this product has an Average Useful Life of seven(7) years, or 60 hours of operation. At the end of the Average Useful Life have the machine inspected annually by an authorized service dealer to ensure that all mechanical and safetysystems are workingproperly and not worn excessively. Failure to do so can resultin accidents, injuries or death. DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE To avoid seriousinjury or death,do not modify engine in any way. Tampering with the governor setting can lead to a runaway engineand cause it to operate at unsafe speeds. Nevertamperwithfactory setting of engine governor. NOTICE REGARDING EMiSSiONS Engines which are certified to comply with California and federal EPA emission regulations for SORE (Small Off Road Equipment) are certified to operate on regularunleaded gasoline, and mayinclude the following emission control systems: EngineModification (EM), Oxidizing Catalyst (OC), Secondary Air Injection (SAI) and Three Way Catalyst (TWO)if so equipped. REMOVING FROM CARTON 1. Cut the cornersof the carton and lay the sidesflat on the ground. Remove and discard all packinginserts. 2. Movethe snowthrowerout of the carton. 3. Makecertainthe carton has beencompletely emptiedbefore discarding it. ASSEMBLY 1. Observe the lower reararea of the snowthrowerto be sure both cablesare alignedwith rollerguides before pivotingthe handle upward. a. Place the shift lever in the F6 position. b. Pull up and back on upperhandleas shownin Figure 1. As you are raising the handleupward, make sure that both ends of the centercable are positionedproperly in the brackets. Align upperhandlewith the lower handle. c. Tightenhand knobs securing upper handleto lower handle. Remove and discard any rubberbands,if present. Theyare for packaging purposes only. 2. Remove cotter pin, wing nut, and hex screw from chutecontrol head and clevis pin and bow-tiecotter pin from chute support bracket.See Figure 2. 3. Insert roundend of chute rod into input of chute controlhead. Push rod as far into the chute controlheadas possible, keeping the holes in the chute rod pointing upward.See Figure 3. 4. Place chuteonto chute base and ensure hex rod is positioned under handlepanel. Install hex bolt previously removed but do not securewith wing nut at this time. See Figure 4. 5. Squeeze the trigger on the handlepaneljoystick and rotatethe chute by hand to face forward. The holes in the chutecontrol input will be facing up. See Figure 5. NOTE: The chutewill not rotatewithout squeezing the trigger on the joystick. 6. Rotate the joystick to the one o'clockpositionso the silver indicator arrow on the input shaft below the controlpanel points upward. See Figure 6. 7, Insert the hex end of chute rod into the input shaft below joystick on handlepanel, Make sure to line up the hole in the hex end of chute rodwith the arrow on the input shaft.See Figure 7. NOTE: The chute rodwill fit snugglyinto the input shaft. Support the rear of the dash panelwith one hand while insertingthe chute rodwith your other hand to ensure the chute rod is inserted all the way into the input shaft. 8. Now push the roundend of chute rod back towards the handle paneluntil the hole in the rod lines up with the hole in the chute controlinput closestto the chute controlhead. Insert the cotter pin. See Figure 8. NOTE: The secondhole is used to achievefurtherengagement of the hex end of chute rod into the input shaft if required and can be used later for adjustment if the chutedoes not fully rotate. Referto the Service& Maintenance section for ChuteControlRod adjustments. 9. NOTE: For smoothest operation, the cables should all be to the left of the chutecontrol rod. 11. The extension cord for the electric starter is fastened with a cable tie to the rearof the auger housing for shipping purposes. Cutthe cable tie and remove cord before operating the unit. SET-UP Shear Pins Holesare locatedin the plastic dash panelfor convenient shear pin storage. See Figure 11. Referto the Operation section for more information regarding shear pin replacement. Chute Clean-Out Tool A chute clean-out tool is fastened to the top of the augerhousing with a mounting clip. See Figure 12. The tool is designed to clear a chuteassemblyof ice and snow. This item is fastened with a cable tie at the factory. Cut the cable tie before operating the snowthrower. loft _1 .all m?vingparts have. stoppedbefore using the clean-out tool to clear the chute assembly. Tire Pressure Under any circumstance do not exceed manufacturer's recom- mended psi. Equal tire pressureshould be maintained at all times. Excessive pressurewhen seatingbeads maycausetire/rim assembly to burst with force sufficient to causeseriousinjury. Refer to sidewall of tire for recommended pressure. Chute Clean-out Tool Figure 12 The tires are over-inflated for shipping purposes. Check the tire pressure before operating the snow thrower. Referto the tire side wall for tire manufacturer's recommended psi and deflate(or inflate)the tires as necessary. NOTE: Equaltire pressure is to be maintained at all times for perfor- mancepurposes. ADJUSTMENTS Skid Shoes The snowthrowerskid shoesare adjusted upward at the factory for shipping purposes. Adjustthemdownward, if desired,priorto operat- ing the snowthrower. It is not recommended that you operate this snowthroweron gravel as it can easilypick up and throwloose gravel,causingpersonal njury or damage to the snowthrower and surround ng property. • For close snow removal on a smooth surface,raise skid shoes higheron the auger housing. • Use a middle or lower positionwhen the area to be cleared is uneven, such as a gravel driveway Figure 13 NOTE: If you chooseto operate the snowthroweron a gravel surface, keep the skid shoesin positionfor maximum clearance between the groundand the shaveplate. To adjustthe skid shoes: 1. Loosen the four hex nuts (two on each side) and carriage bolts. Moveskid shoesto desired position. See Figure 13. 2. Makecertainthe entire bottom surface of skid shoe is againstthe groundto avoid uneven wear on the skid shoes. 3. Retighten nuts and boltssecurely. 12
Auger Control Priorto operating your snowthrower, carefully read and followall instructions below.Perform all adjustments to verify your snow thrower is operating safely and properly. Check the adjustment of the augercontrolas follows: 1. When the auger controlis released and in the disengaged "up" position, the cable should have very little slack. It should NOTbe tight. 2. In a well-ventilated area, start the snowthrowerengine. Refer to Startingthe Enginein the Operation section.Makesure the throttle is set in the FAST position. 3. While standingin the operator's position(behind the snow thrower), engagethe augers. 4. Allow the augers to remain engagedfor approximately ten (10) seconds before releasing the augercontrol. Repeatthis several times. 5. With the auger controlin the disengaged "up" position, walkto the front of the machine. 6. Confirm that the augers have completely stoppedrotatingand show NO signsof motion. If any auger shows ANY sign of rotating, immediately return to the operator's positionand shutoff the engine. Waitfor ALL movingparts to stop before adjustingthe augercontrol. 7. To readjustthe controlcable, loosen the upper hex bolt on the augercable bracket.See Figure 14. 8. Position the bracket upward to provide more slack (or downward to increase cable tension). 9. Retighten the upperhex bolt. 10. Repeatsteps 2-6 above to verify properadjustment has been achieved. SHIFT LEVER 6 The shift lever is locatedon the right side of the handle panel. 5 Place the shift lever into any of eight positions to controlthe 4 direction of travel and groundspeed. Forward 3 Yoursnowthrowerhas six forward(F) speeds. Position one (1)is t 2 the slowest and position six (6) is the fastest. F 1 Reverse Yoursnowthrowerhas two reverse (R) speeds. One (1) is the slowerand two (2) is the faster. CHUTE ASSEMBLY Snow drawn into the augerhousing is discharged out the chute assembly. KEY The key is a safetydevice. It must be fully insertedin orderfor the engineto start. Remove the key when the snowthroweris not in use. NOTE: Do not turn the key in an attemptto start the engine. Doing so may causeit to break. CHOKE CONTROL The chokecontrolis found on the rearof the engineand is activated by rotatingthe knob to the CHOKEposition. Activating the choke controlcloses the chokeplate on the carburetor and aids in starting the engine. ,J Meets ANSi Safety Standards Craftsman Snow Throwers conform to the safetystandard of the AmericanNational Standards Institute (ANSi). 14
THROTTLE CONTROL The throttle controlis located on the rearof the engine. It regulates the speed of the engine and will shutoff the enginewhen movedinto the STOP position. Depressing the primer forces fuel directly into _p the engine's carburetor to aid in cold-weather starting. RECOIL STARTER HANDLE This handleis used to manually start the engine. ELECTRIC STARTER BUTTON Pressing the electric starter buttonengages the engine's electric starter when pluggedinto a 120Vpower source. ELECTRIC STARTER OUTLET Requires the use of a three-prong outdoor extension cord (included) and a 120Vpower source/wall outlet. OIL FILL Engineoil level can be checked and oil addedthrough the oil fill. GAS CAP Unthread the gas cap to add gasoline to the fuel tank. AUGERS When engaged, the auger blades rotate and draw snowinto the auger housing. AUGER CONTROL f AUGER CONTROL The augercontrol is locatedon the left handle. Squeeze the control grip againstthe handleto engagethe augers and start snowthrowing action. Release to stop. DRIVE CONTROL/AUGER CONTROL LOCK f DRIVE CONTROL @ The drive controlis located on the right handle. Squeeze the control grip againstthe handleto engagethe wheel drive. Release to stop. The drive controlalso locks the auger controlso you can operate the chute directional controlwithout interrupting the snowthrowing process. If the augercontrolis engagedsimultaneously with the drive control, the operator can release the augercontrol (on the left handle) and the augers will remain engaged. Release both controls to stop the augers and wheel drive. NOTE: Always release the drive control before changing speeds. Failure to do so will result in increased wear on your machine's drive system. CLEAN-OUT TOOL Never use your hands to clear a clogged chute assembly. Shut off engineand remain behindhandles until all movingpartshave stoppedbefore using the clean-outtool to clear the chute assembly. The chute clean-out tool is conveniently fastened to the rear of the augerhousing with a mounting clip. Shouldsnowand ice become lodgedin the chute assembly duringoperation,proceed as follows to safely clean the chute assembly and chute opening: 1. Releaseboth the AugerControland the DriveControl. 2. Stop the engineby removing the ignition key. 3. Remove the clean-outtool from the clip whichsecures it to the rear of the augerhousing. 4. Use the shovel-shaped end of the clean-outtool to dislodge and scoopany snowand ice which has formedin and near the chute assembly. 5. Refasten the clean-out tool to the mounting clip on the rear of the auger housing,reinsert the ignition key and start the snow thrower's engine. 6. While standingin the operator's position(behindthe snow thrower), engage the auger controlfor a few seconds to clear any remaining snowand ice from the chute assembly. BEFORE STARTING ENGINE Read,understand, and followall instructions and warnings on the machine and in this manual before operating. Oil The unit was shipped with oil in the engine. Check oil level before each operation to ensure adequate oil inthe engine. For further instructions, refer to the steps on page 18. NOTE: Be sure to check the engineon a level surface with the engine stopped. 1. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstickand wipe the dipstickclean. 2. insert the cap/dipstick into the oil filler neck, but do NOT screw it in. 3. Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick, if the level is low, slowly add oil (50, with a minimum classification of SF/SG)until oil level registers between high (H) and low (L). NOTE: Do not overfill. Overfilling with oil mayresult inenginesmoking, hard starting or spark plugfouling. 4. Replace and tighten cap/dipstick firmly before starting engine. Gasoline Use automotive gasoline (unleaded or low leadedto minimize combus- tion chamberdeposits) with a minimum of 87 octane. Gasoline with up to 10%ethanol or 15%MTBE(Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) can be used. Neveruse an oil/gasolinemixture or dirty gasoline. Avoid getting dirt, dust, or water in the fuel tank. DO NOTuse E85gasoline. • Refuelin a well-ventilated area with the enginestopped. Do not smoke or allow flames or sparks in the areawhere the engineis refueled or where gasoline is stored. • Do not overfillthe fuel tank. After refueling, makesure the tank cap is closed properly and securely. • Be carefulnot to spill fuel when refueling. Spilledfuel or fuel vapor may ignite, if any fuel is spilled,makesure the area is dry before starting the engine. • Avoid repeated or prolonged contact with skinor breathing of )or. Useextreme care when handling gasoline.Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vaporsare explosive. Never fuel the machine indoors or while the engine is hot or running. Extinguish cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other sources of ignition. 1. Clean aroundfuel fill before removing cap to fuel. 2. A fuel level indicator is located in the fuel tank. See Figure 15 inset. Be carefulnot to overfill. Fill tank until fuel reaches the fuel levelindicator to allow spacefor fuel expansion. STARTING THE ENGINE Always keep hands and feet clear of moving parts. Do not use a pressurized starting fluid.Vapors are flammable. NOTE: Allow the engineto warm up for a few minutes after starting. The enginewill not develop full power until it reaches operating temperatures. 1. Makecertainboth the augercontrol and drive controlare in the disengaged (released) position. 2. insert ignition key into slot. Makesure it snaps into place.Do not attemptto turn the key. NOTE: The enginecannot start without the key is fully inserted into the ignition switch. Electric Starter The optional electric starter is equipped with a grounded three-wire power cord and plug, and is designed to operate on 120volt AC household current. It must be used with a properly grounded three- prongreceptacle at all times to avoid the possibility of electric shock. Follow all instructions carefully prior to operating the electric starter. DO NOT use electric starter inthe rain. Determine that your home's wiring is a three-wire groundedsystem. Ask a licensedelectrician if you are not certain. If you have a groundedthree-prong receptacle, proceed as follows. If you do not have the properhouse wiring, DO NOT use the electric starter under any conditions. 1. Plugthe extension cord into the outlet located on the engine's surface.Plug the other end of extension cord into a three-prong 120-volt, grounded, AC outlet in a well-ventilated area. 16

Electric starter is equipped with thermaloverload protection;system will temporarily shut-down to allow starter to cool if electric starter becomes overloaded. TO ENGAGE DRIVE 1. With the throttle controlin the Fast (rabbit) '_ position, move shift lever into one of the six forward(F) positions or two reverse (R) positions. Selecta speed appropriate for the snowconditions and a pace you're comfortable with. NOTE: When selecting a DriveSpeed, use the slowerspeedsuntil you are comfortable and familiarwiththe operation of the snow thrower. 2. Squeeze the drive controlagainstthe handleand the snow thrower will move. Release it and drive motion will stop. 6. As the enginewarms,slowly rotatethe chokecontrol to RUN position. If the enginefalters,restart engineand run with choke at half-choke position for a short periodof time, and then slowly rotatethe chokeinto RUN position. 7. After engineis running, disconnect power cord from electric starter. When disconnecting, always unplugthe end at the wall outletbefore unplugging the oppositeend from the engine. Recoil Starter NOTE: NEVER reposition the shift lever (change speedsor direction of travel)without first releasing the drive control and bringing the snow throwerto a complete stop. Doing so will resultin premature wear to the snow thrower's drive system. TO ENGAGE AUGERS 1. To engagethe augers and start throwingsnow, squeeze the auger controlagainstthe left handle. Release to stop the augers. Do not pull the starter handlewhile the engine running. 1. Movethrottle controlto FAST (rabbit) _ position. 2. Movechoketo the CHOKE J..#J position(cold engine start). If engineis warm, place chokein RUN position. 3. Push primer three (3) times, makingsure to covervent hole when pushing.If engine is warm, push primer only once. Always cover vent holewhen pushing. Cool weathermay requirepriming to be repeated. 4. Pull gentlyon the starter handleuntil it begins to resist,then pull quickly and forcefully to overcome the compression. Engine should start. Do not release the handleand allow it to snap back. Returnrope SLOWLY to originalposition. If required, repeat this step. 5. As the enginewarms,slowly rotatethe chokecontrol to RUN position. If the enginefalters,restart engineand run with choke at half-choke position for a short periodof time, and then slowly rotatethe chokeinto RUN position. To avoid unsupervised engineoperation, never leave the machine unattended with the enginerunning. Turn the engineoff after use and remove ignition key. STOPPING THE ENGINE After you are finishedsnow-throwing, run enginefor a few minutes before stopping to help dry off any moisture on the engine. 1. Movethrottle controlto OFF position. 2. Remove the ignition key. Removing the keywill reduce the pos- sibility of unauthorized starting of the engine while equipment is not in use. Keepthe key in a safeplace.The enginecannotstart without the ignition key. 3. Wipe any moisture awayfrom the controls on the engine. REPLACING SHEAR PINS The augers are secured to the spiral shaft with shear pins and cotter pins.If the augers should strike a foreign object or ice jam, the snow throweris designed so that the pins mayshear.If the augers will not turn, check to see if the pins have sheared.See Figure 16. NEVERreplace the auger shear pins with anythingother than Sears SKU# 88389/0EM Part No. 738-04124A replacement shear pins. Change the sparkplug once a season or every 100hours. To ensure proper engine operation, the sparkplug must be properly gappedand free of deposits. 1. Remove the sparkplug boot and use a spark plugwrenchto remove the plug. See Figure 19. 2. Visuallyinspect the sparkplug. Discard the sparkplug if there is apparent wear,or if the insulator is cracked or chipped.Clean the sparkplug with a wire brush if it is to be reused. 19
3. Measure the plug gap with a feeler gauge. Correct as necessary by bendingside electrode. See Figure 20. The gap should be set to .02-.03 inches (0.60-0.80 ram). 4. Check that the spark plug washeris in good conditionand thread the sparkplug in by handto preventcross-threading. 5. Afterthe sparkplug is seated, tightenwith a spark plugwrenchto compress the washer. NOTE: When installing a new sparkplug, tighten 1/2-turn after the spark plugseats to compress the washer. To preventspillage, remove all fuel fromtank by running engine until it stops. 2. Carefully pivotthe snowthrowerup and forwardso that it rests on the auger housing. 3. Remove the lower framecover fromthe underside of the snow throwerby removing the self-tapping screws which secureit. 4. Apply a light coatingof engineoil (or 3-in-1oil) to the hex shaft. See Figure 21. NOTE: When lubricating the hex shaft, be carefulnot to get any oil on the aluminumdrive plate or rubberfriction wheel. Doing so will hinder the snowthrower's drive system. Wipe off any excessor spilled oil. Wheels At least once a season, removeboth wheels. Clean and coat the axles with a multipurpose automotive grease before reinstalling wheels. SHAVE PLATE AND SKiD SHOES The shaveplate and skid shoeson the bottom of the snowthrowerare subject to wear. They should be checked periodically and replaced when necessary. NOTE: The skid shoes on this machinehave two wear edges.When one side wearsout, theycan be rotated1800 to use the other edge. To removeskid shoes: 1. Remove the four carriage bolts and hex flange nuts which secure them to the snowthrower. 2. Reassemble new skid shoeswith the four carriage bolts (two on each side) and hex flange nuts. Referto Figure 23. To removeshaveplate: 1. Remove the carriage boltsand hex nuts whichattach it to the snowthrowerhousing. 2. Reassemble new shaveplate,makingsure heads of carriage bolts are to the inside of housing. Tightensecurely. Referto Figure 23. NOTE:Augers not shown for clarity. Figure 23 ADJUSTMENTS Shift Cable If the full rangeof speeds(forwardand reverse) cannotbe achieved, refer to the figure to the right and adjustthe shift cable as follows: 1. Place the shift lever in the fastest forward speed position(F6). 2. Loosen the hex nut on the shift cable index bracket. See Figure 24. 3. Pivotthe bracket downward to take up slack in the cable. 4. Retightenthehex nut. Drive Control When the drive control is released and in the disengaged "up" position, the cable should have very little slack.It should NOTbe tight. Also, if there is excessive slack in the drive cable or if the unit experiences intermittent drive while using,the cable mayneed to be adjusted. Check the adjustment of the drive controlas follows: 1. With the drive control released, push the snowthrowergently forward. The unit should roll freely. 2. Engage the drive controland gently attemptto push the snow thrower forward. The wheelsshould not turn. The unit should not roll freely. 3. With the drive control released, movethe shift lever backand forth between the R2 positionand the F6 positionseveral times. There should be no resistance in the shift lever. 4. If any of the above tests failed,the drive cable is in needof adjust- ment. Proceed as follows: 5. Loosen the lower hex bolt on the drive cable bracket. See Figure 25. 6. Chute Control Rod To achievemore chute control rodengagement in the input shaft under the handlepanel, the chute controlrod will have to be adjusted. Refer to Figure 26. To adjustthis rod, proceed as follows: 1. Remove the cotter pin fromthe hole closestto the chutecontrol headon the chutecontrolinput. 2. Pull out the chute controlrod until the hole in it lines up with the other hole in the chute controlinput. 3. Reinsert the cotter pin through this hole andthe chute control rod. FRICTION WHEEL REMOVAL If the snowthrowerfailsto drive with the drive control engaged, and performing the drive controlcable adjustment fails to correct the problem, the friction wheel mayneed to be replaced. Followthe instructions below.Examine the friction wheel for signsof wear or cracking and replace if necessary. 1. To preventspillage, remove all fuel fromtank by running engine until it stops. 2. Place the shift lever in third Forward (F3) position. 3. Carefully pivotthe snowthrowerup and forwardso that it rests on the auger housing. 4. Remove the frame coverfrom the underside of the snow thrower by removing self-tapping screwswhich secureit. 5. . Carefully remove the hex nut and washerwhich secures the hex shaft to the snowthrowerframeand lightlytap the shaft's end to dislodge the ball bearingfrom the right side of the frame. See Figure 35. NOTE: Be carefulnot to damage the threads on the shaft. 7. Carefully positionthe hex shaft downward and to the left before carefully sliding the friction wheel assembly off the shaft. See Figure 36. NOTE: If you're replacing the friction wheel assembly as a whole, discardthe worn part and slide the new part onto the hex shaft. Followthe steps above in reverse order to reassemble components. If you'redisassembling the friction wheel and replacing only the rubber ring, proceed as follows: 1. Remove the four screws which securethe friction wheel's side platestogether. See Figure 37. 2. Remove the rubberring from between the plates. 3. Reassemble the side plateswith a new rubberring. If the snowthrowerwill not be used for 30 daysor longer, or if it is the end of the snowseasonwhen the last possibility of snowis gone, the equipment needs to be storedproperly.Follow storageinstructions below to ensure top performance from the snowthrowerfor manymore years. PREPARING ENGINE Engines storedover 30 days need to be drainedof fuel to prevent deterioration and gum from formingin fuel system or on essential carburetor parts. If the gasoline in your enginedeteriorates during storage, you may needto have the carburetor, and other fuel system components, serviced or replaced. 1. Remove all fuel fromtank by running engineuntil it stops. Do not attemptto pourfuel from the engine. 2. Change the engineoil. 3. Remove sparkplug and pour approximately 1 oz. (30 rnl) of clean engineoil into the cylinder. Pullthe recoil starter severaltimes to distribute the oil, and reinstall the spark plug. 4. Clean debris from aroundengine, and under, around, and behind muffler. Apply a light film of oil on any areas that are susceptible to rust. • Store in a clean,dry and well ventilated area awayfrom any ap- pliance that operateswith a flame or pilot light, such as a furnace, waterheater, or clothes dryer.Avoid any areawith a spark producing electric motor, or where power tools are operated. Neverstoresnow thrower with fuel in tank indoors or in poorly venti- lated areas,where fuel fumes may reach an openflame, spark or pilol light as on a furnace, water heater, clothes dryer or gas appliance. • If possible, avoid storage areas with high humidity. • Keepthe enginelevel in storage. Tiltingcan causefuel or oil leakage. PREPARING SNOW THROWER When storingthe snowthrowerin an unventilated or metal stor- age shed,care should be taken to rustproof the equipment. Using a light oil or silicone, coat the equipment, especially any chains, springs, bearings and cables. • Remove all dirt fromexteriorof engineand equipment. • Follow lubricationrecommendations. • Store equipment in a clean,dry area. 26

Remove ice and snowfrom gas cap. Be certainvent hole is clear. 1. Adjustdrive controlcable. Referto Serviceand Maintenance section. 2. Replace drive belt. Referto Serviceand Mainte- nance section. 3. Change friction wheel or contactyour Sears Parts& Repair Center. 1. Stop engineimmediately and disconnect sparkplug wire.Clean chute assembly and inside of auger housing with clean-outtool or a stick. 2. Stop engineimmediately and disconnect sparkplug wire. Remove object fromauger with clean-out tool or a stick. 3. Adjustaugercontrolcable. Referto Assembly section. 4. Replace auger belt. Referto Serviceand Mainte- nance section. 5. The warranty periodbegins on the date the engineor equipment is delivered to an ultimate purchaser. (a) GeneralEmissions Warranty Coverage MTD must warrantto the ultimate purchaser and each subsequent purchaser that the engineis: (1) Designed, built,and equippedso as to conform with all applicable regulations adopted by the Air Resources Boardpursuant to its authority in Chapters 1 and 2,Part 5, Division 26 of the Healthand Safety Code;and (2) Free from defectsin materials and workmanship that causethe failure of a warranted part to be identicalin all material respectsto the part as described in the engine manufacturer's application for certification for a periodof two years. (b) The warranty on emissions-related partswill be interpreted as follows: (1) Any warranted part that is not scheduled for replacement as required maintenance in the written instructions requiredby Subsection (c) must be warranted for the warranty perioddefined in Subsection (a)(2). If any such part fails duringthe periodof warranty coverage, it must be repaired or replaced by MTD according to Subsection (4) below.Any such part repaired or replaced under the warranty must be warranted for the remaining warranty period. (2) Any warranted part that is scheduled only for regular inspection in the written instructions required by Subsection (c) must be warranted for the warranty perioddefined in Subsection (a)(2). A statement in such written instructions to the effectof "repair or replace as necessary" will not reduce the periodof warranty coverage. Any such part repaired or replaced underwarranty must be warranted for the remaining warranty period. (3) Any warranted part that whichis scheduled for replacement as required maintenance in the written instructions required by Subsection (c) must be warranted for the periodof time prior to the first scheduled replacement point for that part. If the part fails priorto the first scheduled replacement, the part must be repaired or replaced by MTD accordingto Subsection (4) below. Any such part repaired or replaced under warranty must be warranted for the remainder of the period priorto the first scheduled replacement point for the part.
(4) Repair or replacement of any warranted part under the warranty provisions of this article must be performed at no charge to the owner at a warranty station. (5) Notwithstanding the provisions ofSubsection (4) above, warranty services or repairs must be provided at all MTD distribution centers that are franchised toservice the subject engines. (6) The owner must not be charged for diagnostic labor that leads tothe determination that a warranted part is in fact defective, provided that such diagnostic work is performed at a warranty station. (7) The engine manufacturer is liable for damages to other engine components proximately caused by a failure under warranty of any warranted part. (8) Throughout the engine's warranty period defined inSubsection (a)(2), MTD will maintain a supply of warranted parts sufficient to meet the expected demand for such parts. (9) Any replacement part may be used in the performance of any warranty maintenance or repairs and must be provided without charge to the owner. Such use will not reduce the warranty obligations of MTD. (10) Add-on or modified parts that are not exempted by the Air Resources Board may not be used. The use of any non-exempted add-on or modified parts shall be grounds for disallowing a warranty claim made inaccordance with this article. The engine manufacturer shall not be liable under this article to warrant failures of warranted parts caused by the use ofnon-exempted add-on or modified part. Look For Relevant Emissions Durability Period and Air index information On Your Engine Emissions Label Engines that are certified to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Tier 2 Emission Standards must display information regarding the Emissions Durability Period and the Air Index. Sears, Roebuck and Co., U.S.A. makes this information available to the consumer on our emission labels. The Emissions Durability Period describes the number of hours of actual running time for which the engine is certified to be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenance in accordance with the Operating & Mainte- nance Instructions. The following categories are used: Moderate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 125 hours of actual engine running time. Intermediate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 250 hours of actual engine running time. Extended: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 500 hours of actual engine running time. For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to 25 hours per year. Therefore, the Emissions Durability Period of an engine with an intermediate rating would equate to 10 to 12 years. The Air Index is a calculated number describing the relative level of emissions for a specific engine family. The lower the Air Index, the cleaner the engine. NOTA: Si tiene que usar la rn_.quina quitanieve sobre grava,rnantenga la zapata antideslizante en la posici6n rn_.s elevada para Iograr una separaci6n rn_.xirna entre el piso y la placa de raspado. Paraajustarlas zapatas antideslizantes: 1. Afloje las cuatros tuercas hexagonales (dos en cada lado)y los pernos del carro.Muevalas zapatas antideslizantes a la posici6n deseada. Vea la figura 13. 2. Prueba de control de la barrena Antes de operarsu rn_.quina quitanieve, lea atentarnente y curnpla todas las instrucciones que aparecen a continuaci6n. Realice todos los ajustes para verificar que la rn_.quina est,.operandocon seguridad y correctarnente. Cornpruebe el ajustedel controlde la barrenade la siguiente forrna: 1. Cuando se sueltael controlde la barrena y est,. en posici6n desengranada arriba, el cable debe tenet rnuy poco juego. NO debe estartenso. 2. En un _.rea bien ventilada, arranque el motorde la rn_.quina quitanieve segQn se indica anteriorrnente en esta rnisrna secci6n. AsegQrese de que del estrangulador est,. ajustadoen posici6n FAST. 3. Parado en la posici6n del operador (detr_.s de la rn_.quina quitanieve), engranela barrena. 4. Deje la barrena engranada durante aproxirnadarnente diez (10) segundos antesde soltarel controlde la barrena. Repitaesta operaci6n variasveces. 5. Con el controldel estrangulador en posici6nr_.pida (dibujode un conejo),y la barrenaen posici6ndesengranada arriba, carnine al frentede la rn_.quina. 6. Confirrne que la barrena ha dejadode girar por cornpleto y no rnuestra NINGON signo de rnovirniento. Si la barrenarnuestra CUALQUIER signo de rotaci6n, vuelvaa la posici6n del operador y apagueel motorinrnediatarnente. Espere a que TODASlas partesrn6vilesse detengan antesde volvera ajustarel control de la barrena. 7. Paravolvera ajustarel cable de control, afloje la tuercahexago- nal superior en la rn_nsula del cable de la barrena. 8. Ubique la rn_nsula hacia arribapara brindarrn_.s juego (o hacia abajopara aurnentar la tensi6ndel cable). Veala figura 14. 9. Vuelva a apretar la tuercahexagonal superior. 10. Suelte arnbos controles paradetener tanto las barrenas corno la transrnisi6n de las ruedas. NOTA: Suelte siernpre el controlde la transrnisi6n antesde carnbiar de velocidad. De no proceder asi, aurnentar& el desgaste del sisterna de transrnisi6n de su rn_.quina. Suelte el controlde la barrena y el control de la transrnisi6n. 2. Paradetener el motorsaque la Ilavede encendido. 3. Saquela herrarnienta de lirnpieza del pasador que la ajustaa la parte posteriorde la caja de la barrena. 4. Use el extrerno con forrna de pala de la herrarnienta de lirnpieza para desplazar y recoger la nieve y el hielo que se forrnaron cerca del conjuntodel canal. 5. Vuelva a ajustarla herrarnienta de lirnpieza al pasador de en- sarnblado ubicado en la parte posterior de la caja de la barrena, insertede nuevo la Ilavede encendido y encienda el motorde la rn_.quina quitanieve. 6. Parado en la posici6n del operador (detr_.s de la rn_.quina quita- nieve), engrane el control de la barrena durante unos segundos para elirninar la nieve o el hielo que hayan quedado en el conjunto del canal. ANTES DE ENCENDER EL MOTOR Lea, cornprenda y siga todas las instrucciones y advertencias que aparecen en la rn_.quina yen este manual antesde operarla. Aceite El motorse envi6 con aceite en el motor. Controle el nivel de aceite antesde cada operaci6n para asegurarse de que haya aceite suficiente en el motor. Paraobtener rn_.s instrucciones, rernitase a los pasosque aparecen en la p_.gina 60. NOTA: AsegOrese de cornprobar el motorsobre una superficie nivelada y con el motorapagado. 1. Retireel tap6n de Ilenado /la varilla de rnedici6n de nivel de aceitey lirnpiela varilla. 2. Inserte el tap6n/la varilla de rnedici6n en el cuello de Ilenado de aceite, pero no la atornille. 3. Extraigael tap6n de Ilenado / la varilla de nivel de aceite. Si el nivel es bajo, agregue aceite (5W-30, con una clasificaci6n minimade SF/SG)lentarnente hastaque el registro marque entre nivel alto (H) y bajo(L). NOTA: No Io Ilene en exceso.El Ilenado excesivo de aceite puede hacer que el motorgenere hurno, quecueste arrancarlo o fallasen la bujia. 4. Vuelva a colocarel tap6n/la varilla de aceitey ajustecon firrneza antes de arrancar el motor. Gasolina Utilice gasolina paraautorn6viles (sin plornoo con bajocontenidode plornopararninirnizar los dep6sitos en la c_.rnara de cornbusti6n) con un octanajerninirno de 87. Se puedeusar gasolina con hasta un 10% de etanol o un 15% de MTBE(eter rnefilico terciario-bufilico). Nunca use una rnezcla de aceitey gasolina ni gasolina sucia. Eviteque se introduzca suciedad, polvo o agua en el tanque de combustible. NO utilicegasolina E85. • Cargue combustible en un _.rea bien ventilada y con el motor apagado. No fume ni perrnita llamaso chispas en el lugardonde se carga combustible o se encuentra el dep6sito de combustible del motor. • No Ilene en exceso el tanque de combustible. NOTA: Las zapatas de esta m_.quina tienen dos hordes de desgaste. Cuando un lado se desgasta, se las puede rotar 1800 para usar el otro horde. Para retirar las zapatas antideslizantes: 1.
