About this Manual WeâÂÂve added this manual to the Agilent website in an effort to help you support your product. This manual is the best copy we could find; it may be incomplete or contain dated information. If we find a more recent copy in the future, we will add it to the Agilent website. Support for Your Product Agilent no longer sells or supports this pr oduct. Our service centers may be able to perform calibration if no repair parts are needed, but no other support from Agilent is available. You will find any other available product information on the Agilent Test & Measurement website, www.tm.agilent.com . HP References in this Manual This manual may contain references to HP or Hewlett-Packard. Please note that Hewlett-Packard's former test and measurement, semiconductor products and chemical analysis businesses are now par t of Agilent Technologies. We have made no changes to this manual copy. In other documentation, to reduce potential confusion, the only change to product numbers and names has been in the company name prefix: where a product number/name was HP XXXX the current name/number is now Agilent XXXX. For example, model number HP8648A is now model number Agilent 8648A.

Ethernet LAN Interface The LA N interface provides a network-based in te rface b etween the HP 16500B Logic Analysis System and personal computers and workst ations over a 1 0Base -T Et her net LAN. De tailed in forma tio n on in stallin g a nd tro ublesho ot ing in th e LAN enviro nment is covere d in t he HP 16500H LAN AdministratorâÂÂs and Service G uide . The fol lowi ng step s ar e an ov erview of the process with some troubles hooting hints. 1 Connect an EtherTwis t 10B ase-T LAN cable in to the RJ-4 5 LAN port on the in terface mo dule. If your LAN uses T hinLAN connections, a Media Access Unit (MAU) i s require d. 2 Set up the config ura tion menus on the HP 165 00B ma infram e. You can configure th e interface module t o work with your net work from the HP 16 500B f ro nt- pan el tou chs cr een. Afte r the H P 16 50 0B po wer -up tes ts a re complete, the E thernet configuration can be acce ss ed in th e Communications menu. The interface module aut omatically obtains the subnet mask by se nding a br oadca st IC MP quer y over th e n etwo rk. The b ro adc ast I CMP que ry is transmitted appro ximately 1 0 s econds after po wer i s applied to the interface module and approximately 2 seconds after th e IP address is changed. 3 Verify con nectivity wi th an echo requ est. In mo st net work enviro nment s, an echo r equest is accom plish ed u sing the ping ut ility. Fo r t he exa ct syn ta x for the ping or other echo request util ity, refer to your network docum entation. A normal res ponse to multiple echo req uests i s 9 , 10, or po ssi bly 1 1 pack ets t ran smitte d f or every 10 ech o req uests. If there i s no response to the echo req uest, first check the comm and li ne. If an IP address is used in the echo reques t command line, then the IP address typed in the comm and li ne should match t he IP address stored in the HP 16500B Ethernet Configuration menu. If a ho stname was used in the command line, then check the no de names database to see that the IP address and the hostname for the HP 16500B were correctly entered. After verifying the command line, check to m ake sure the hardware is connected and ope rating properly. To veri fy operation o f the interface module, refer t o "To ve rify the interface module performance " in Chapter 3. An intermittent response to the echo request indicates a problem with the LAN i tse lf. U se a LA N ana lyz er o r LAN ma nageme nt s oft ware to m onit or activity and determine where bottlenecks or other problems are o ccurring . 4 Mount the HP 165 00B system wi th an NFS mount. An NFS mount of the 16500B system depends on the netw ork envi ronment the system is bein g m ount ed to. F or UN IX, t he mount comm and with the computer name and mount point are required. In MS-DOS, a virtual drive specifie r and 16500B IP address are required. File Manager in MS-Windows is used to mount in an MS-Windows e nviro nment. In all cases, either the 16500B file server /control or /data directory must be spe cified depending on whether the 16500B system is being m ounted for control or data. Th e nor mal r esp ons e to an NF S m oun t in m ost case s is the com man d li ne prompt reappears. If the system includes a utility to view the mount t able (f or e xam ple, in UNIX , t he mount command alone displays /etc/mnttab), the n the 16 500B r emo te f ile ser ver shoul d a ppear in the tab le of mou nt ed devices. If error me ssages appear, then check the com mand line syntax. If the syntax is correct, then resolve the error message directly using your network documentation. Note that an erro r message appears if you try to mount too soon after power-up. You need to wait at l eas t 15 seconds after the System Conf igu rati on m enu is d ispl ayed o n t he H P 16 500B d isplay bef ore attem pt ing to mount. Verify the Int erface Module Perfor mance Before starti ng the interface module performance verification, check all cables and connector s to ensure that all cables are properly co nnected. The interface module performance verification ( self-test) is divided into two sect ion s. The fir st se ctio n t ests t he p hys ical co nn ect ion, f or exam ple, the cable and termination. The second section tests the internal functions of the LAN IC on the L AN interface m odule. When both sections of the self- test hav e bee n com p leted , a statu s re port ing m essag e a ppear s in th e Opt ion Board Test menu. The status reporting message indicates whether the te sts pass, if a failure occurs, and which section failed. The first section, the physi cal connection, is tested depending on the LA N topology used. Because EtherTwist ( 10Base-T) is used, t he interface modul e will listen f or th e he artb eat sig na l fro m th e LA N. If a he artbea t is recei ved , then the physical connection is considere d good. The second s ection is tested using internal loopback features of the LAN IC. Transmitted packe ts are lo oped back to the receive circui t o f the LAN IC . When t he looped b ack packets are received, t hey are processed like a packet received fro m a remote cl ient or server. If t he looped b ack packet is recognized and processed, t hen the LA N IC and t he LAN function are cons idered goo d.
