Getting st a rted 3 Quic k se tup Setting up your d igit al cam era is qu ick and easyâ follow t he se steps an d youâ ll be ready t o take pictures. Step 1 : Attach t he wr is t s trap 1 Thread the short loop through the wrist strap atta ch me n t th a t is located under the CF me mor y ca rd compartmen t door . Y ou might nee d t o use a pointed object, such as a pape r cli p, to pul l the end of the loop t h rough. 2 Pull the stra p through the lo op, and t hen pull the k no t tig h t. S t e p 2: In st all th e batt e ri es 1 Open the bat t e ry com partment doo r by pus hing it out and then swingin g it open. 2 Insert four A A batteries (supplied), making sure that t he /â electrodes a re facing the p roper di rection (see th e di agram on the in s i de of the c ameraâs batt ery com p artm ent). Note For replacement, use only phot o-quality alkaline, photo-lithium, or rechargeab le nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. After you have set the cameraâ s clock, it records the date and time at which you t ake eac h picture. 1 T urn the di a l to point to th e da te format, and then press the d ial t o change it. Y ou can choose MD Y (mm/dd/ yyyy), DMY (dd/mm/y yyy), or YM D ( yyyy/mm/ dd). 2 T urn the dial t o point to t h e da te, and then press the dia l. 3 T urn the di a l to change th e nu mber , a nd then press the dia l to co nf irm it. 4 Set t h e remaining values in the same way . 5 T o sa ve your settin gs, sel ect Exit . The n, aft e r you un load image s t o your comp uter , you can r e use the card. With a CF m em ory card you c an also v iew an d s ave images on a computer that is equipped with a CF m emory card re ader , and print imag es di r e ctly from a prin ter th at has a CF mem ory card slo t. When you are familiar with this pro cess, you can us e the advanced c amera functions desc r i bed in later chap ters. The camera is ready t o take a picture. 2 Frame your subjec t i n the viewfinder . 3 Press and hold the SHUTTER b utton halfway down to allow the came r a to a djust the focus and expos ure. 4 When you s ee t he green li ght to the right of t he viewfinder , press t he SHUTTER button all the way dow n. 5 The im age display on the back of the c amera t urns o n a nd displays the image for a s hort tim e. T o preserve battery power , the im age display turns off after the image has been sa v e d to memory . T o revie w all t he pictures you hav e taken, press the d i al . Ti p When you are taking a p icture, be careful t o keep your fingers away from the l en s and the flash. Usi ng au tomatic fo cus and a utomatic e xposure The c amera auto matically f ocuses and ad justs the expos ure for the current lighting conditions whe n you pres s the SHU TTER but ton halfway down. The camera adjusts the f o cus and exposure aut omatica lly ev e n i f you p ress the SHUTTER bu tton all t h e way down without p ausin g. But you are m ore likely t o cat ch the perfect s h ot, especially when you a re ph otog r a phing an active s ubjec t, if y ou set the cam eraâ s focus and exposure early . T o do t hi s , p ress t h e SHUTTER bu tton halfway down, an d then press the SHUTTER button all the way down at the exact momen t you w ish t o c a pture the im age. Note If t he cam era cannot find a foc us or i f the exposure will be lon ger than 1/ 30 s e cond, a yellow li g ht appea r s to the right of the viewf inder . Y ou c an still take t he picture, but the result s m ight not be optimal. Usin g fo cus loc k The aut omat ic foc us feat ure focuses on the s ubject i n the m iddle of the picture and requires goo d contras t within that subje c t area. Prev iewing your p ictures Instead of l o oking through the viewfinde r t o fram e a picture, you can use the image display to preview a pi ct ure. The image display shows exactly what your pict u re will l ook like, whereas the viewfinder is slightly ac curate. Preview your p icture on th e imag e display when precise framin g i s i m portant, espec ially w hen yo u are tak ing a close - u p shot. Note Using the image display consu mes a lot of battery power . T o conserve battery power , the came r a autom ati cal ly turns of f the image displ ay af ter 60 seconds i f you do n ot press a butto n. T o prev iew a p icture 1 T urn the cam era on . 2 Press the button to turn the i mage display on. 3 Frame your pict ure in the image di splay by pointing t he camera lens at your s u bject. 4 Press and hold the SHUTTER b utton halfway down to allow the came r a to a djust the focus and expos ure. 5 When you s ee the st e ady green light to t he right of the viewfinder , press the SHUTTER button all the way d own to t ake the pi cture. HP ph oto sm art 318 U se r Gui de 12 T ip s for t ak ing the be st pi ctures î T ry to fill the entire fr ame with your s u bject and exclude unwanted detail. î Keep t he s u n beh ind you or a t yo ur side, no t directly overhead or in f ront of y o u. î If the l ight is behind y our subj ect, use the FLAS H ON se tt ing to increase the li ght on t he front o f your s ubjec t . î When the amb ient light is low , us e the flash. Make sure you keep the subject wit h in the flash r a nge (2.5 m, or about 8 feet). î If you use the F LASH OFF setting in l ow light, use a t ri pod to steady the camera during expo s ure . î The camera takes about a second to focus and adjust the exposure when y ou p ress t h e SHUTTER button halfway do wn. W ait until you s ee the s teady green light to t he right of the viewfinder , then pres s the SHUTTER b utton all the w ay down t o take the picture. If t h is i s th e first time you are using a digi tal came r a , y ou mig ht want to practice t o b ecome accusto med t o the t iming. î If a yellow l ight appe ars to the right of the v iewfinder when y ou press t he SHUTTER button, t he camera cann ot find a focus or the expos ure will be longer than 1/30 second (or bot h). T ry the following: ⢠Make sure that you a re no t too close to y our subject a nd that you frame your pictures w ith the desired subject in the center . For more i nformation, s ee âUsing th e flashâ on p ag e 21. ⢠If the light on your subject is low and y o u are using t he FLASH O FF set t in g, th e expo sure c ould be lo nger than 1/30 sec ond . T o st eady the c amera, mount it on a tripod . ⢠Set t h e cam eraâs autom atic f ocus an d au tomat ic e x p osure on a d iff eren t subject by us ing f o cus lock. î Avoid t aking flash photo s in front of reflective o bjects l ike mirrors or g lass t o prevent bri gh t spots in your photos. î Although the cam era has an elec tronic aut omatic focus system , some condi tions m igh t caus e the came ra to focus improperly . Whi le viewing yo ur i mages, you can m agn ify or delete ima ges, or create a p rint order t o prin t a set of photos.
