Maintenance and Se rvice Gui de 1–1 1 Pr oduc t description The HP xb4 Notebook Media Docking Station provides an ef f icient, less-cluttered work en vironment, improved cable management, and wireless peripherals. It eliminates the need to purchase a separate monitor , external speakers, USB hub, and a wireless ke yboard and mouse kit. ✎ The wireless ke yboard and mouse kit are av ailable in select countries and regions. Compatability The docking station is compatible with all HP and Compaq notebooks having a USB 2.0 port.

Connects the microphone to the audi o-in (microphone) jack on the docking station when a computer is doc ked. ✎ The docked computer microphon e settings may need to be changed before you connect a microphone to the audio-in (microphone) jack on the docki ng station. Refer to your Windows® operating syst em instructions for more information. ✎ For specific microphone usag e information, refer to the microphone manufacturer’s instructions. 5 USB por ts (2) Connect optional USB de vices. T o raise the upper panel: 1. Lo wer the le ver 1 located on the left side of th e upper panel to the do wn position. 2. Grasp the upper panel 2 with both hands, and lift the panel to ward you. 3. Lift the le ver 3 to the up position to lock the upper panel position.

Grasp the upper panel 2 with both hands, and tilt the upper panel do wn. 3. Lift the le ver 3 to the up position to lock the upper panel position. Connecting to AC po wer Å WA R N I N G : T o re duce the risk of e lectr ic shoc k or damage to y our equipment: P lug the pow er cord into an A C outlet that is ea sily acces sible at all times. Disconnect po wer fr om the pr oduc t b y unplugging the po w er cor d fr om the A C outlet. If pr ov id ed with a 3-p in attachment plug on the po w er cor d , plug the cord int o a gr ounded (earthed) 3-pin outlet. Do not dis abl e the pow er cord gr ounding pin , for e x ample , b y attaching a 2 -pin adapter . T he gr ounding pin is an important s afety featur e . It i s possible to r eceiv e an electr ic shock fr om a sy stem that is no t pr operl y gr ounded. ✎ Both a smart A C po wer connector and a standard A C po wer connector are pro vided. Choose the connector that corresponds to the computer A C po wer adapter being used.

Identify the correct po wer connector to the docking station. ✎ Power cords and AC outlets vary in appearance by regi on and country. The AC adapter is included with the computer or purchased separately. 2. Connect the computer A C a dapter to the corresponding po wer connector on the docking station 1 . ❏ Connect a smart A C adapter to the corresponding po wer connector 1 . – or – ❏ Connect a standard A C adapter to the corresponding po wer connector 1 . 3. Connect the A C po wer cord to the A C adapter 2 . 4. Connect the A C po wer cord to the A C outlet 3 .

Mov e the expansion cable to either side of the docki ng station, depending on where the e xpansion port on your computer is located. ✎ The location of the expansion port on your comput er v aries b y computer series and model. ✎ It is important to position the cable co rrectly , so that the cable can mov e freely .

Connect the expansion cable to the e xpansion port on the computer 2 , matching the icon on the computer expansion port with the icon on the end of the e xpansion cable. Ä CAUT ION: T o pr e ve nt damage to the e xpansion port , be sur e that yo u co rr ectl y align the e xpansi on cable w ith the e xpansion port on the computer . ✎ The expansion port may also be called e xpansion port 3 in the computer documentation. If the computer is already on, the good dock conne ction light on the expansion cable turns on.

If the computer is of f, press the power b utton on the dock ed computer or the po wer button on the docking station. ✎ The po wer button location on the dock ed comput er v aries by computer series and model. The po wer status light on the front of the docking station turns on. ✎ After the computer is docked, the internal computer spea kers are disabled and the docking station speak ers are acti v ated.
Maintenance and Se rvice Gui de 2–1 2 T r oubleshooting Å WA R N I N G : Only author i z ed tec hnic ians tr ained by HP should r epair this equipment . All tr oubleshooting and repair pr ocedur es ar e detailed to allo w onl y subass embly-/module-lev el r epair . Because o f the complex it y of the indi v idual boar ds and subass emblies , do not attempt to mak e r epairs at the com ponent le vel o r modifi cations to an y pr inted w iring boar d . Impr oper re pairs can cr eate a safety haz ard . An y indicati on of componen t r eplacement or pr inted w ir ing board modif icati on ma y vo id an y war r anty or ex change allo wances. This chapter contains troubleshooting information for th e docking station. Carefully match the symptoms of the malfunction against the problem description in the tr oubleshooting tables to a void a misdiagnosis. Refer to Chapter 4, “Remov al and replacement procedures, ” for all remov al and replacement procedures. Follo w these guidelines when troubleshooting: ■ Complete the recommended actions in the order in which they are gi v en. ■ When the problem is resolved, do not co mplete the remaining troubleshooting steps. T roubleshooting chec klist When troubleshooting a problem, check the follo wing lis t for possible solutions before replacing parts: ■ Be sure that cables are connected pr operly to the suspected defecti ve part. ■ Be sure that all required de vice dri vers are installed. Pr oblems and solutions The follo wing tables list possible problems, the possible cause of each problem, and the recommended solution.

Disconnect the e xpansion cable from the computer , and then reconnect the cable to the e xpansion port on the computer . The computer is in Sleep , Standby , or Hiber nation. Exit Sleep , Standby , or Hiber nation. The computer shuts down une xpectedly . The docking station is not connected to A C power , draining the computer battery . Connect the A C adapter to the docking station and to an A C outlet. The dock ed computer cannot access docking station USB de vices. A secondary computer is connected to the docking station PC por t. Disconnect the secondar y computer . The por ts or jacks on the docking station are not working. The docking station is not connected to A C power . Connect the A C adapter to the docking station and to an A C outlet. The computer is not dock ed correctly . Redock the computer . The optional wireless ke yboard or mouse does not work. The wireless receiver is not connected to a USB por t. Connect the wireless receiver to a USB port. The wireless receiver an d k e yboard or mouse hav e not been synchronized. Synchronize the de vices b y pressing the appropriate buttons . The wireless ke yboard or mouse has no battery pow er . Be sure that batteries are inser ted correctly in the wireless ke yboard or mouse and that the batteries are functional. Prob lem P ossible cause Solution The docking station speakers ha v e little or no volume . The docking station speak ers ha ve been muted or the v olume is set too low . Adjust the vo lume using the volume scroll z one. The docking station is not connected to A C power . Connect the A C adapter to the docking station and to an A C outlet. An audio de vice is connected to the headphone jack of the doc king station or comput er , muting the docking station speak ers. Unplug the audio de vice. The computer is not dock ed correctly . Redock the computer . Th e vol u me l evel does not increase or decrease. The volume scroll z one is not being used correctly . T o increase volume , slide your finger from left to right on the v olume scroll zone , or tap the plus sign. T o decrease volume , slide your fing er from right to left on the v olume scroll zone , or tap the minus sign. Media from the dock ed computer or docking station hard drive will not play . There is an auxiliar y audio de vice connected to the docking station. Disconnect the auxiliar y audio de vice. (Continued)

An audio de vice connected to the docking station does not produce sound. An audio de vice is connected to the headphone jack on the computer . Using the headphone jack on the computer mutes the doc king station sound. Disconnect the audio de vice from th e headphone jack on the computer . A microphone connected to the computer does not wor k. A microphone is connected to the docking station. Either use the microphone connect ed to the dock ing station or disconnect it. A connected home enter tainment system does not hav e audio . A udio is not connected properly . Be sure that the docking station is properly connected to the home enter tainment system. A connected home enter tainment system does not e xperience surround sound. The home enter tainment system ma y not suppor t digital audio . Serial number Report the docking station serial number to HP when reque sting information or ordering spare parts. The serial number is located on the bottom of the docking station. The table belo w identifies the k ey information that you need when contacting HP for replacement parts or for se rvice-related questions. Each component identified appears on the label on the bottom of the unit. Component Description Product name This is the product name af fixed to the front of y our computer . Serial number (s/n) This is an alphanumeric identifier that is unique to each product. P ar t number/ product number (p/n) This number provid es specific inf or mation about the product’ s hardware components. The par t number helps a se rvice technician to deter mine what components and par ts are needed. Model description This is the number y ou use to locate documents, driv ers, and suppor t f or your doc king station.
