1 Identifying hardware To see a list of hardware installed in the comput er, follow these s teps: 1. Select Start > Computer > System properties. 2. In the left pane, click Device M anager . You can also ad d hardware or modify device configurations using Device Manager. NOTE: Windows® include s the User Account Control featur e to improve the security of yo ur computer. You may be prompted for your permission or passwor d for tasks such as installing applications, running utilities, or chang ing Windows settings. Re fer to Windows He lp for more informati on. 1
2 Components Product notice This user guide de scribes features that are co mmon to most models. Some features may not be available on yo ur computer. Top components TouchPad Component Description (1) TouchPad light ● Blue: TouchPad is enabled. ● Amber: TouchPad is disabled. (2) TouchPad* Moves the pointer and selects or activates items on the screen. (3) TouchPad horizontal scroll zone Scrolls left or right. (4) Left TouchPad button* Functions like the left button on an external mouse. (5) TouchPad on/off button Enables/disables the TouchPad. (6) TouchPad vertical scroll zone Scrolls up or down. 2 Chapter 2 Components
Component Description (7) Right TouchPad button* Functions like the right button on a n external mouse. *This table describes factory settings. To view and cha nge pointing device preferences, select Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Mouse. Lights Component Description (1) Wireless lights (2) ● Blue: An integrated wireless device, such as a wireless local area network (WLAN) device and/or a Blu etooth® device, is turned on. ● Amber: An integrated wireless device is turned off. (2) Power lights (2)* ● On: The computer is on. ● Blinking: The computer is in the Sleep state. ● Off: The computer is off or in Hibernation. (3) Num lock ligh t On: Num lock is on or the embedded numeric keypad is enabled. (4) Drive light Blinking: The hard drive or optical drive is being accessed . Top components 3
Component Description (5) Battery light ● On: A battery is charging. ● Blinking: A battery that is the only available power source has reached a low battery level or a critical battery level. ● Off: If the computer is plugged into an external power source, the light is turned off when all batteries in the computer are fully charged. If the computer is not plugged into an external power source, the light stays off until the b attery reaches a low batter y level. (6) Caps lock light On: Caps lock is on. *The 2 power lights display the same information. The light on the power button is visible only when the computer is op en. The power light on the front of the computer is visible whe ther the computer is open or closed. Buttons and speakers Component Description (1) Speakers (2) Produce sound. (2) Wireless button Turns the wireless feature on or off, but does not create a wireless connection. NOTE: To establish a wireless connection, a wireless netwo rk must already be set up. (3) Power button * ● When the computer is off, press the button to turn on the computer. ● When the computer is on, press the button to initiate Sle ep. 4 Chapter 2 Components
Component Description ● When the computer is in the Sleep state, press the button briefly to exit Sleep. ● When the computer is in Hiber nation, press the button briefly to exit Hibernation. If the computer has stopped responding and Windows® shutdown procedures are ineffective, press and hold the power button for at least 5 seconds to turn off the computer. To learn more about your power settings, select Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Power Options . *This table describes factory settings. For information about changing factory settings, refer to the user guides located in He lp and Support. Keys Component Description (1) esc key Displays system information when pre ssed in combination with the fn key. (2) fn key Executes frequently used syst em functions when pressed in combinat ion with a function key or the esc key. (3) Windows logo key Displays the Windows Start menu. (4) Function keys Execute frequently used syste m functions when pressed in combinat ion with the fn key. (5) Windows applications key Displays a shortcut menu for items beneath the pointer. (6) Integrated numeric keypa d keys Can be used like the keys on an external n umeric keypad. (7) Selected math operation hotkeys Regulate speaker sound when pressed in combination with the fn key. Front components Component Description (1) Audio-out (headphone) jack Produces sound when connected to optional pow ered stereo speakers, headphones, ear buds, a headset, or television audio. (2) Audio-in (microphone) jack Connects an optio nal computer headset microphone, stereo array microphone, or monaural micro phone. 6 Chapter 2 Components
Right-side components Component Description (1) USB ports (2) Connect optional USB devices. (2) Optical drive Reads optical discs and, on select models, also writes to optical discs. (3) Optical drive light Blinking: The optical drive is being accessed. (4) Security cable slot Attaches an optional security cable to the computer. NOTE: The security cable is designed to act as a deterrent, but it may not prevent the computer from bein g mishandled or stolen. Right-side components 7
Left-side components Component Description (1) Power connector Connects an AC adapter. (2) Vent Enables airflow to cool internal components. NOTE: The computer fan starts up automatically to coo l internal components and prevent overheating. It is no rmal for the internal fan to cycle on and off during routine operation. (3) RJ-11 (modem) jack Connects a modem cable. (4) RJ-45 (network) jack Connects a network cable. (5) External monitor port Connects an external VGA monitor or projector. (6) S-Video-out jack Connects an optional S-Video dev ice such as a television, VCR, camcorder, overhead projector, or video capture card. (7) Digital Media Slot Supports the following optional digi tal card formats: Secure Digital (SD) Memory Card, MultiMediaCard (MMC), Memory Stick (MS), Memory Stick Pro (MSP) , xD-Picture Card (XD). (8) USB port Connects an optional USB device. 8 Chapter 2 Components
Bottom components Component Description (1) Battery bay Holds the ba ttery. (2) Battery release latch R eleases the battery from the battery bay. (3) Hard drive bay Holds the hard drive. (4) Memory module and WLAN module compartment Contains the memory module slots and the WLAN (wirele ss local area network) module slot. CAUTION : To prevent an unresponsiv e system , replace the wireless module only with a wireless module au thorized for use in the computer by the governmental a gency that regulates wireless devices in your country or region. If you replace the module and then receive a warning message , remove the module to restore computer functionality, and then contact technical support through Help and Support. (5) Vents (3) Enable airflow to cool internal components. NOTE: The computer fan starts up automatically to cool interna l components and prevent overheating. It is normal for the internal fan to cycle on and off during routine opera tion. Bottom components 9
Display components Component Description (1) Internal display switch Turns off the display if the display is closed while the computer is turned on. (2) Webcam light On: The integrated camera is in use. (3) Webcam Records video and captures still p hotographs. (4) Internal microphone Records sound. 10 Chapter 2 Components
Wireless antennae At least 2 antennae send and receive sig nals from one or mor e wireless devices. Th ese antennae are not visible from the outsid e of the computer. NOTE: For optimal transm ission, keep the areas immedi ately around the antenn ae free from obstructions. To see wireless regula tory notices, refe r to the section of the Regulatory, Safety and Environmental Notices that applies to your cou ntry or region. Additional hardware components Component Description (1) Power cord* Connects an AC adapter to an AC o utlet. (2) AC adapter Converts AC power to DC power. (3) Battery* Powers the computer when the computer is not plugged into external power. *Batteries and power cords vary in appearance by region and country. 12 Chapter 2 Components
3 Labels The labels affixed to the computer provide information you may need when you troubleshoot system problems or travel internat ionally with the computer. ● Service tag—Provides th e product brand a nd se ries name, serial numbe r (s/n), and pro duct number (p/n) of your computer. Have this informat ion available when you con tact technical suppor t. The service tag label is affixed to the bottom of the computer. ● Microsoft® Certificate of Authenticity—Contai ns the Windows® Pr oduct Key. You may ne ed the Product Key to update or troubleshoot the operating syste m. This certificate is affixed to the bottom of the computer . ● Regulatory label—Provi des regulatory information about the computer. The regulatory label is affixed inside the batte ry bay. ● Modem approval label —Provides regulatory info rmation about the mo dem and lists the agency approval markings re quired by some of the countries in wh ich the modem has been approved for use. You may need this information when travelin g internationally. The modem approval label is affixed inside the memo ry module compartment. ● Wireless certification label(s)—Provide information about op tional wireless devices and the approval markings of some of the countries in whi c h the devices ha ve been approved for use. An optional device may be a wireless local area ne twork (WLAN) device or an optional Blue tooth® device. If your comp uter model includes one or more wireless devic es, one or more certification labels are included with your computer. Yo u may need this information when traveling internationally. Wire less certification labels a re affixed inside the me mory module compartment. 13
