Har dw ar e Setu p During hardware setup, you will 1. Learn ho w to get help by accessing online user guides and troubleshooting resources. 2. Identify the hardwa re you need to set up the notebook. 3. Insert the battery pack into the notebook so that it can be gin to char ge as soon as the notebook is connected to external po wer . 4. Connect the communication de vice (modem or network card) so that you can register the notebook and operating system during software setup. 5. Connect the notebook to e xternal po wer . 6. Open the notebook. 7. T urn on the notebook. After you turn on the notebook, you will be prompted to begin software setup. 1â2 Getting Started

Modem cables, battery packs, and power cords v ary in appearance by re gion and country . T o set up the notebook for the first time, you need the notebook, the A C adapter 1 , the battery pack 2 , the power cord 3 , and a network cable 4 (purchased separately) or modem cable 5 . Har dw ar e Setu p Step 3: Inser t t he B at ter y P a c k This notebook supports up to 2 battery packs: â î One primary lithium-ion battery pack is included with the notebook. â î The tra vel battery pack is an optional battery pack that can be attached to the bottom of the notebook. T o insert the primary battery pack: 1. T urn the notebook upside down with the rear to ward you. 2. Slide the battery pack 1 into the battery bay until it is seated. The battery pack release latches 2 automatically lock the battery into place.) Getting Started î 1â5
Har dw ar e Setu p Step 4 : C onnec t t he C ommunica tion De vic e Modem Y our notebook has an internal modem, an RJ-11 (modem) jack, preinstalled modem dri vers, and a modem cable. The modem cable must be connected to an analog telephone line. Ã CA UTION: Jacks f or digit al PBX s ys tems ma y r ese mble analog (modem) jac ks but ar e not compatible w ith the modem . Jacks for analog telephone lines v ary by country . â î If you are connecting the modem to a telephone line in a country where RJ-11 (modem) jacks are standard, follo w the instructions in â Connecting the Modem Cable , â ne xt in this chapter . â î If you are connecting the modem to a telephone line in a country where RJ-11 (modem) jacks are not standard, follo w the instructions in â Connecting the Modem with an Adapter , â later in this chapter . Ã T o reduce the r isk of electric shock, fire , or damage to the equipment, do not plug th e modem cab le into a RJ-45 (network) jack. 2. Plug the modem cable into the country-specif ic modem adapter 3 . 3. Har dw ar e Setu p Netw or k Ca r d Y our notebook has an RJ-45 (network) jack, an internal netw ork interface card (NIC), and preinstalled netw ork dri vers. Con necting a Ne tw ork Cable A network cable has an 8-pin RJ -45 network connector at each end and may contain noise suppressi on circuitry , which pre vents interference with TV and radio reception. T o connect the network cable: 1. Conf irm that the ex isting network supports Ethernet 10B ASE-T/100BASE-TX/1000B ASE-T connections. 2. If the network cable contains noise suppression circuitry 1 , plug the circuitry end of the network cable 2 into the RJ-45 jack on the back of the notebook. 3. Plug the other end of the cable 3 into an RJ-45 wall jack. Getting Started 1â9
Har dw ar e Setu p Step 5: Conn ec t th e Notebook to Exter nal P o w er T o connect the notebook to external A C po wer: 1. Plug the A C adapter cable 1 into the po wer connector . (The po wer connector is on the rear of the notebook.) 2. Plug the po wer cord 2 into the A C adapter , and then into the A C outlet 3 . â Po wer cords and A C outlets vary in appearance b y region and country . 1â10 Getting St arted
Har dw ar e Setu p When the notebook recei ves A C power , the battery pack begins to char ge and the battery light is turned on. The color of the battery light is amber when the battery is char ging. The light changes from amber to green when it is close to full char ge capacity . When the battery pack is fully charged, the battery light is turned of f. For more informati on about the battery light, refer to â Lightsâ in Chapter 4. It is recommended that you lea ve the notebook connected to external po wer until the battery pack is fully charged and the battery light is turned of f. A partially charged ne w battery pack can run the notebook after software setup is complete, b ut battery charge displays will not be accura te until the ne w battery pack has been fully char ged. Har dw ar e Setu p Step 7 : T urn on th e Notebook T o turn on the notebook: » Press and release the po wer/standby b utton 1 . The po wer/standby light 2 next to the po wer/standb y button and the po wer/standby light on the front of the notebook 3 are turned on, and you are prompted to begin softw are setup. 2 î Sof t w are Setu p î â Read the information belo w before you begin the softw are setup wizard. After you respond to the setup prompt, you must complete the entire setup process without interruption. Setup time v aries. The software setup process allo ws you to â Select regional preferences. â Accept license agreements. â Protect your notebook. â Name your notebook. â Enter an administrator password (select models only). â Register online. â Create user accounts (select models only). If you prefer not to register your notebook during softw are setup, you can do so at any time after softw are setup is complete. Y ou can also change or add any settings you select or skip during the setup process. Although you can register and set preferences later , it is usually easier and fast er to complete these tasks during software setup. Getting Started 2â1
So ftwar e Se tup During software setup, it is normal for some notebook models to pause occasionally for se ve ral minutes. These normal pauses are indicated by an hour glass icon. Ã CA UTION: If y ou ar e pr ompted to select an ope rating s ys tem language bef or e a page called âW elcome to Mic r oso ft Windo ws â is displa y ed , choo se car efull y . On some models , the languages that yo u do not choo se ar e deleted f r om the s ys tem and cannot be r es tor ed dur ing softwar e setup . T o mov e the pointer , slide your finger on the T ouchPad 1 in the direction that you want to mo ve the pointer . So ft w ar e Setu p W elcom e to Mi c r osof t Windo w s The f irst page in the Setup W izard is âW elcome to Microsoft W indows. â This page introduces your Microsoft® W indows® operating system and explains the softw are setup na vigation: â î T o display additional information about the text on an y wizard page: Select the question mark icon in the lo wer-right section of the page or press the f1 ke y on your ke yboard. â î T o continue to the next page: Select the Next button in the lo wer-right corner of the page. â î T o return to the previous page: Select the Back bu tt o n in the lower -left corner of the page. (This b utton is a v ailable only on subsequent pages.) â î T o skip a page without entering a preference: Select the Skip button in the lo wer-right corner of the page. (This b utton is not av ailable on all pages.) Sel ec t Y our Regional Pref erences Regional preferences are preset for the country in which you purchased the notebook. The next 2 pages prompt you to conf irm or change the regional preferences: â î âHo w should dates and currency appear?ââ Conf irm or change the region and language preferences to format dates and currency . Notice that regional v e rsions of some languages are sho w n in parentheses after the language name. â î âWhat time zone are you in?ââ Conf irm or change your time zone. Y ou can select or clear the check box for the notebook clock to automatically adjust to daylight sa ving time. Getting Started î 2â3
So ftwar e Se tup Accept t he Licens e Agreements On the âEnd-User License Agreement (EULA)â page, you must accept both the Microsoft End-User License Agreement and the HP Software Product Li cense Agreement to continue with software setup. â î T o accept both agreements: Select Y es, I accept them , and then select Next . â î T o decline both agreements: Select No, I donât accept them , and then select Next . If you decline both agreements, you will not be permitted to use the installed software. On the follo wing page you will be of fered only 2 options: â î Y ou can choose Back to return to the End-User License Agreement page â or â â î Y ou can choose Shut Do wn to turn of f the notebook. When you start the notebook after selecting Shut Down , the âW elcome to Microsoft W indo wsâ page is displayed and you must again begin softw are setup. Protect Y our Notebook When your notebook is connected to the Internet, Microsoft can automatically update your system with the latest security updates, critical updates, and service packs. â î T o enable Automatic Updates: Select Help pr otect my PC by turning on A utomatic Updates now . â î T o disable Automatic Updates or to enable it later: Select Not right now . 2â4 î Getting Started
So ft w ar e Setu p Nam e Y our Notebook If you plan to include your notebook on a network, your notebook must ha ve a unique name. On the âWhatâ s your computerâ s name?â page, you can retain the default name sho wn in the Computer name box or designate another name. For e xample, you may want to base your notebook name on your name or a location, such as âFamilyroom. â In order for your notebook name to be displayed on a network, the name â î Must not be longer than 15 characters. â î Must include only numerals (0-9), letters (A-Z and a-z), and hyphens. â î Cannot include spaces. Y ou can also enter a description of your notebook in the Computer Description box. The description can contain spaces and special characters. For e xam ple, you could describe your notebook as âDa vidâ s game machine. â Getting Started î 2â5
So ftwar e Se tup Enter an Administra tor P a ssw ord (Selec t Models O nly ) On some notebook models, the âWhatâ s your Administrator password?â page is displyed ne xt, allo wing you to create an administrator password that protects the notebook from unauthorized access to the Computer Setup utility . Y ou can manage the administrator password in the Computer Setup utility or in BIOS Conf iguration for ProtectT ools in ProtectT ools Security Manager . The administrator password â î Is not interchangeable with a W indows administrator password, although both passw ords can be identical. â î Is not displayed as it is set, entered, changed, or deleted. â î Must be set and entered with the same ke ys. For e xample, an administrator password set with k eyboard number k eys will not be recognized if you enter it thereafter with embedded numeric ke ypad number ke ys. â î Can include any combination of up to 32 letters and numbers and is not case sensiti ve. T o enter an administrator password: » Enter a password according to the guidelines abo ve, and then reenter the password to conf irm it. T o proceed with your registration and software setup, select Next . â If you choose to skip this step, you can set an administrator password at a later time using the Computer Setup utility or BIOS Conf iguration for ProtectT ools in ProtectT ools Security Manager . T o view the He wlett-Packard Re gistration Pri v acy Statement: » Select the underlined link near the top of the page. So ftwar e Se tup Create User Accounts (Sel ec t Models Onl y) On some notebook models, the âW ho will use this computer?â page is displayed, allo wing you to create a user account for each person who will use the notebook. User accounts enable each notebook user to create a personal notebook en vironment by choosing display and security se ttings, personal files, screen sa vers, and the appearance of the W indo ws desktop. Thereafter , when W indo ws starts, the list of user accounts is displayed. When a user account is selected, W indows opens according to the preferences set by that user . Press t he Finish But ton When the âThank you!â page is displayed, read the text, and then click Finish . The notebook restarts after the process is complete. Select your user account, and then press enter to be gin using your notebook. T o protect your notebook, follow the instructions in Chapter 3, âNext Steps. â â All W indows instructions in your notebook documentation describe Microsoft W indows XP procedures based on the def ault W indows XP cate gory vie w . Ne xt St eps Protect t he N otebook from V iruses When you use the notebook for Internet access, e-mail, or networking, you e xpose the notebook to computer viruses. Computer viruses can damage or disable your operating system, applications, and utilities. Norton AntiV irus software is preinstalled on your notebook to protect against such viruses. Norton Anti virus software can detect and destroy most viruses, and usually repair damage the y ha ve caused. T o provide protection against ne wly discov ered viruses, Norton Anti virus software must be periodically updated. â î For information about using and updating your Norton AntiV irus software, and f or other information such as troubleshooting: Select Start > All Pr ograms > Norton AntiV irus . Then select the Help & Support b utton. â î For more information about computer viruses: 1. Select Start > Help and Support . 2. T ype viruses into the Search box. 3. Ne xt Step s Protect t he Notebook from P o w er Surges T o protect the notebook from power sur ges that may be caused by irregular electrical service or an electrical storm: â î Plug the notebook po wer cord into an optional, high-quality surge protector . Sur ge protectors are av ailable from most computer or electronics retailers. â î Provide sur ge protection on the cable that connects the modem to a telephone line. â î During an electrical storm, either run the notebook on battery po wer or shut do wn the notebook and unplug the po wer cord. Protect Y our Priv a cy When you use the notebook for Internet access, e-mail, or networking, it is possible for unauthorized persons to obtain information about you, your notebook, and your data. Fire wall software monitors incoming traf fic on your computer b y including features such as logging and reporting, automatic alarms, and user interfaces for conf iguring the f ire wall. Some f ire walls also monitor outgoing traf f ic. T o protect your priv acy , it is recommended that you â î K eep your operating system updated. When your notebook is connected to the Internet, Microsoft can automatically update your system with the latest security updates, critical updates, and service packs. For information about updating your operating system, select Start > Help and Support . â î Use a f ire wall such as the W indo ws operating system f ire wall that is a v ailable on your notebook. Ne xt St eps Under some circumstances a f ire wall can block access to Internet games, interfere with printer or file sharing on a netw ork, or block authorized e-mail attachments. T o temporarily solve the problem, disable the f ire wall, perform the task, and then enable the f ire wall. If f iles on your notebook are accidentally deleted or corrupted, you can easily restore the f iles yourself. Y ou can also restore your complete f ile system to a pre vious state. Altiris Local Recov ery pro vides protection of files b y backing up f iles to a hidden Altiris recov ery partition. When you install the software, the Reco very Agent P artition W izard guides you through the process of creating the recov ery partition. After the partition is created, the notebook restarts and creates the f irst snapshot. After the snapshot is created, the notebook restarts, making the snapshot a v ailable for recov ery through W indows. By default, Local Reco ve ry automa tically takes snapshots of your f iles on a regular basis. Y ou can change the snapshot schedule. For more information, refer to the Altiris Local Reco v ery Help. T o access your snapshots in the Altiris Recov ery Agent folder: 1. Right-click the Altiris Recov ery Agent icon on your desktop. 2. Click Open. The notebook automatically creates restore points at regular interv als and may create additional restore points when you change yo ur personal settings or add software or hardwa re. Y ou can manually create additional restore points to provide increased protection for your system f iles and settings. It is recommended that you manually create restore points â Before you add or extensi vely modify software or hardw are. â Periodically , whene ver the system is performing optimally . Restoring to any restore point does not af fect your data files. Sys t e m R e c o ve r y Repairing t he Opera ting S y stem T o attempt an operating system repair without deleting your personal data, use the Oper ating System disc that was shipped with the notebook: â If your notebook does not ha ve an optical dri ve, you may need to connect to an optional external MultiBay . 1. Connect the notebook to external po wer through the AC adapter and turn on the notebook. 2. Immediately insert the Operating System disc into the notebook. 3. Press and hold the po wer/standby b utton for at least 5 seconds to turn of f the computer . 4. Press the power/standb y button again to turn on the notebook. 5. When prompted, press any ke y to start from the disc. After a fe w minutes, you may need to select your language, and then the Setup W izard opens. â On the âW elcome to Setu pâ page, do not press R (step 8 in this procedure) until you ha ve completed steps 6 and 7. 6. Press enter to continue. A licensing agreement page is displayed. 7. Press f8 to accept the agreement and continue. The âSetupâ page is displayed. 8. Press R to repair the selected W indo ws installation. The repair process begins. This process tak es 1 to 2 hours to complete. The notebook restarts in W indows after the process is complete. If other recov ery ef forts do not successfully repair the operating system, you can reinstall it. T o insert the primary battery pack: 1. T urn the notebook upside down with the rear to ward you. 2. Slide the battery pack 1 into the battery bay until it is seated. Sys t e m R e c o ve r y Altiris Local Reco v er y Altiris Local Recov ery is a preloaded application that protects the f iles on your notebook by storing copies of f iles, called snapshots . If f iles on your notebook are accidentally deleted or corrupted, you can easily restore the f iles yourself. Y ou can also restore your complete f ile system to a pre vious state. Altiris Local Recov ery pro vides protection of files b y backing up f iles to a hidden Altiris recov ery partition. When you install the software, the Reco very Agent P artition W izard guides you through the process of creating the recov ery partition. After the partition is created, the notebook restarts and creates the f irst snapshot. After the snapshot is created, the notebook restarts, making the snapshot a v ailable for recov ery through W indows. By default, Local Reco ve ry automa tically takes snapshots of your f iles on a regular basis. Y ou can change the snapshot schedule. For more information, refer to the Altiris Local Reco v ery Help. T o access your snapshots in the Altiris Recov ery Agent folder: 1. Right-click the Altiris Recov ery Agent icon on your desktop. 2. Click Open. A restore point is a âsnapshotâ of your software, dri vers, and operating system f iles at a particular time. The notebook automatically creates restore points at regular interv als and may create additional restore points when you change yo ur personal settings or add software or hardwa re. Y ou can manually create additional restore points to provide increased protection for your system f iles and settings. It is recommended that you manually create restore points â Before you add or extensi vely modify software or hardw are. â Periodically , whene ver the system is performing optimally . Restoring to any restore point does not af fect your data files. F or example, restoring your system softw are to an earlier state will not af fect documents or e-mails that you sav ed after that time. â If you do not like the results of your restoration, you can re verse the restoration. T o access the Software Setup utility , select Start > All Programs > Softwar e Setup . The application reinstallation process replaces corrupted system f iles within the application and reinstalls deleted system fi les within the application. â î In most cases: If the applicatio n you are reinstalling is still installed on your notebook, the reinstallation process does not af fect your settings within the application. â î In all cases: If an application has been deleted from your notebook, the reinstallation process reinstalls the application or utility to the factory image b ut cannot restore your personal settings. Connect the notebook to external po wer through the AC adapter and turn on the notebook. 2. Immediately insert the Operating System disc into the notebook. 3. Press and hold the po wer/standby b utton for at least 5 seconds to turn of f the computer . 4. Press the power/standb y button again to turn on the notebook. 5. When prompted, press any ke y to start from the disc. After a fe w minutes, you may need to select your language, and then the Setup W izard opens. â On the âW elcome to Setu pâ page, do not press R (step 8 in this procedure) until you ha ve completed steps 6 and 7. 6. Press enter to continue. A licensing agreement page is displayed. 7. Press f8 to accept the agreement and continue. The âSetupâ page is displayed. 8. Press R to repair the selected W indo ws installation. The repair process begins. This process tak es 1 to 2 hours to complete. The notebook restarts in W indows after the process is complete.
