Top compo nents TouchPad Component Description (1) TouchPad* Moves the pointer and selects or activates items on the screen. (2) Left TouchPad button* Functions like the left button on an external mouse. (3) TouchPad scroll zone Scrolls up or down. (4) Right TouchPad button* Functions like the right button on an external mouse. *This table describes factory settings. Lights Component Description (1) Caps lock light On: Caps lock is on. (2) Power light ● On: The computer is on. ● Blinking: The computer is in the S leep state. ● Blinking rapidly: An AC adapter with a higher power r ating should be connected. ● Off: The computer is off or in Hibernation. (3) QuickPlay light On: The QuickPlay program is launched. (4) Wire le ss ligh t ● Blue: An integrated wireless device, such as a wireless local area network (WLAN) device, an HP Broadban d Wireless Module, or a Bluetoo th® device, is on. ● Amber: All wireless devices are off. (5) Volume mu te light ● Off: Computer sound is on. ● On: Computer sound is off. (6) Volume down light Blinking: The volume scroll zone is being used to decrease speake r volume. (7) Volume up light Blinking: The volume scroll zo ne is being used to increase speake r volume. 4 Chapter 2 Com ponents
Buttons Component Description (1) Po wer button ● When the computer is off, press the button to turn on the computer. ● When the computer is on, press the button t o shut down the system. ● When the computer is in Hibernation, press t he button briefly to exit Hibernation. ● When the computer is in the S leep state, pres s the button briefly to exit Sleep. If the computer has st opped responding a nd Windows® shutdown procedures are ineffective, press and hold the power button for at least 5 seconds to turn off the computer. To learn more about your power settings, select Start > Control Panel > Sys tem an d Ma inte n anc e > Power Op tions . (2) M edia button Launches the Quic kPlay program. (3) Wireless button Turns the wi reless feature on or off but does no t establish a wireless connection . NOTE: You must set up or ac cess a wireless netw ork to establish a wireless connection. (4) Volume mu te but ton Mutes and restores speaker sound. (5) Vo lume down button Decreases speaker sound. (6) Vo lume up bu tton Increases speaker sound. Top com ponent s 5
Keys Component De scription (1) esc key Displays sys tem information about your computer when pr essed in combination with the fn key. (2) fn key Executes frequently used sy st em functions when pressed in combination with a function key or the esc key. (3) Windows logo key Displays the Windows Start menu. (4) Windows applications key Displays a shortcut menu for items beneath the pointer. (5) Embedded numeric keypad k eys Can be used like the k eys on a n extern al numeric key pad. Front comp onent s Component Description (1) Drive light ● Blinking green: The h ard drive or opt ical drive is be ing accessed . ● Amber (select models only): HP 3D DriveGuard has temporarily parked t he hard drive. (2) Audio-in (microphone) jack Connects an op tional computer headset micropho ne, stereo arra y microphone, or monaural microp hone. (3) Audio-out (headphone) jack Produces sound when connected to optional powered stereo speakers, headp hones, ear buds, a headset, or television audio. Front compon ents 7
Right-side componen ts Component Description (1) ExpressCard s lot Supports optional ExpressCards. (2) Digital Media Slot (select models only) Supports the following optional digital card formats: ● MultiMediaCard ● MultiMedia Card Plus ● Secure Digital M emory Card ● Secure Digital High Capacity Memory Card (3) HDMI port Connects an optional video or audio device, such as a high- definition television or any compatible digital or audio comp onent. (4) USB ports (2) ( select models only) Connect optional USB devices. (5) External monitor port Connects an externa l VGA monitor or projector. (6) Vent Enables airflow to co ol internal comp onents. NOTE: The computer fan st arts up au tomatically t o cool internal components and prevent overheating. It is normal for the internal fan to cycle on and off during routine operation. (7) Security cable slot Attaches an optiona l security cable to the computer. NOTE: The security cable is designed to act as a deterrent, but it may not prevent the computer from being mishandled or stolen. 8 Chapter 2 Com ponents
Left-side components Component Description (1) Battery light ● Amber: A battery is ch arging. ● Turquoise: A battery is close to full charge capacity. ● Blinking amber: A battery that is the only available power source has rea ched a low battery leve l. When the battery reaches a critical batt ery level, the battery lig ht begins blinking rapidly. ● Off: If the computer is plugged into an external po wer source, the light turns off when all batteries in the computer are fully charged. If the computer is not plugged into an external power source, the light stays off until the battery reaches a low battery level. (2) Power connector Connects an AC adapter. (3) RJ-45 (network ) jack Connects a network cable. (4) RJ-11 (modem) jack Connects a modem cable. (5) USB port Connects an optional USB device. (6) Optical drive Reads optical discs and, on select models, also writes to optical discs. Left-si de compon ents 9
Bottom components Component Description (1) Battery bay Holds the battery. (2) Battery release latch Releases the battery from the battery bay. (3) Wireless module compartment Holds a WLAN m odule (select models only). NOTE: To prevent an unrespons ive system, replace t he wireless module only with a wireless module authorized for use in the computer by the governmental agency that regulates wireless devices in your country or regi on. If you replace the module and then receive a warning message, remove the module to restore computer functionality, and then contact technical support through Help and Support . (4) Vents (2) Enable airflow t o cool internal components. NOTE: The computer fan st arts up au tomatically t o cool internal components and prevent overheating. Additional ha rd ware components Component Description (1) Po wer c ord * Connects an AC a dapter to an AC o utlet. (2) Battery * Powers the computer when the computer is not plugged into external power. (3) AC adapter Converts AC power to DC pow er. (4) Modem cable (select models only)* Connects the internal modem to an RJ-11 telephone jack or to a country- or region-specif ic modem cable adapter. (5) Country- or region-s pecific modem cable adapter (select models only)* Adapts the modem cable to a non-RJ-11 telephone jack. *Modem cables, modem cable adapters, batteries, and pow er cords vary in appearance by count ry or region.
