CAUTION To re duce the r isk of damage to the c omputer , damage to a d rive, o r loss of inform ation, obs erve thes e precau tions: Initiate standby , and al low the scr een to cle ar, befo re yo u move a comput er or exte rnal h ard driv e from one locati on to another . Before handl ing a drive, d ischa rge sta tic el ectrici ty b y touchi ng the unpa inted metal surf ace o f the driv e. Do n ot touch t he con nector pins o n a remo vable driv e or on the c omputer. Handle a dri ve ca refully ; do no t drop a driv e or pl ace i tems o n it. Before remo ving or inse rting a drive , shut down t he com puter . If yo u are un sure whether the compute r is of f or in h ibern ation, turn the c ompute r on, and th en shut it down thr ough th e operati ng system . Do n ot use ex cess ive for ce when i nser ting a drive into a drive bay. Do not type on the keyboard or move the computer wh ile the optical drive is writing to a dis c. The write pr oces s is sen sit ive t o vibr atio n. When the batt ery is the only sourc e of power , ensure that the battery is sufficien tly charge d before writin g to a mediu m. Avoid expos ing a drive to tem peratu re or humidit y extremes . Avoid ex posing a driv e to liquid s. Do not spra y it with cl eaning prod uct s. Remo ve the m edium from a drive bef ore rem oving th e dri ve from the drive bay, or traveli ng wi th, shippi ng, or storin g a drive. If a drive m ust be m ailed, place th e dri ve in a bubble -pack m ailer o r other suitabl e pr otective packag ing and lab el the packag e âFRAG ILE.â Avoid ex posing a driv e to magnetic fie lds. Se curi ty devices with magn etic fields inclu de airport walk- throug h device s and sec urity wand s. The airp ort secu rity dev ices that ch eck ca rry-on luggage , such a s con veyor b elts, use x- rays in stead of mag netism a nd wil l not damage a dri ve. ENWW 1

3 Hard drives Replaci ng the primary hard driv e CAUTION To prevent sy stem lo ckup and loss of inf ormati on: Shut dow n the c ompute r before remov ing the har d drive from th e hard dr ive bay. Do not re move the har d drive while th e com puter is on, in s tandby , or in hiberna tion. If you are not sur e whe ther the com puter is of f or in hibernati on, tur n the computer on b y pres sing the powe r butt on. Th en sh ut down the comp uter thr ough th e operati ng sys tem. NOT E You computer may look sl ightly d ifferent f rom the illu strati ons in this s ection . To remo ve the prim ary hard dr ive: 1. Save yo ur work . 2. Shut down the c omputer a nd cl ose th e displ ay. 3. Disconne ct al l extern al dev ices c onnected to th e com puter . 4. Unplug the power c ord from the AC o utlet. 5. Turn th e com puter ups ide d own on a flat surf ace. 6. Remove the b attery from the com puter. 7. With the hard dr ive bay towar d you, loos en the 2 hard drive co ver sc rews (1) . 8. Lift the hard dr ive cover a way from the c ompute r (2) . NOTE Select models have a sec ond hard drive bay for a second ary hard dr ive. The primary hard drive is marked with a â1â and the se condar y hard driv e is marked wi th a â2.â 9. Pull the hard d rive tab u p, and then l ift the har d dr ive away from the compute r. 2. Gently pr ess t he hard d rive do wn unti l it snaps i nto pl ace. 3. Align th e tabs (1) on the hard driv e cover with the no tches on the c omputer . 4. Clos e th e cover (2) . 5. Tighten the hard dr ive cover sc rews (3) . Using a seco ndary ha rd dr ive (selec t mode ls only ) The compute r may be equippe d with an optiona l secon dary hard driv e bay. This bay may be em pty or occupi ed by a seconda ry hard dr ive. NOT E Do not install a seco ndary hard drive unl ess the co mputer is config ured to su pport a second ary hard d rive. A second ary hard drive is designed to sto re persona l file s, music, mul timedi a, or gra phics. It is not configu red as a bootable device . On models with a second ary har d drive (drive D) , the optical dr ive become s drive E. The next dri ve added to the system, such as a new USB or digital device , will be assig ned the next available drive letter . â² To view your har d drives, selec t Start > My Comput er . 4 Optical drives An optica l drive, such as a DVD-RO M drive, sup ports optic al discs (C Ds and DVDs). T hese disc s are used to st ore or transp ort information and to pl ay music and m ovi es. DVDs hav e a higher c apaci ty th an CDs. Insertin g an optical di sc 1. Turn on the com puter. 2. Press the re lease button (1) on th e drive bezel to rel ease t he media tray. 3. Pull out the tray (2) . 4. Hold the CD or D VD by the edges to avoid touch ing the flat surf aces an d positio n the d isc ove r the tray spind le, with the labe l side up. NOTE If the tray is not fully ac cess ible, til t the disc car efully to po sition it ov er the spi ndle. 5. Gen tly pr ess the disc (3) down onto the tray spindl e until the d isc sn aps into place. 6. Clos e the med ia t ray. NOTE After you inse rt a disc , a sho rt pau se i s normal . Removing an o ptical disc (with power) If th e compute r is r unning on ex ternal o r batt ery pow er: 1. Turn on the com puter . 2. Press the re lease button (1) on th e drive bezel to rele ase th e media tray, and th en gent ly pull out the tray (2) until i t stops. 3. Remove the disc (3) from the tray by gentl y pressing down on the spindle while lifting the outer edges of the di sc. H old the disc b y the edges and avoi d touc hing t he fla t surf aces. NOTE If the tray i s not ful ly acc essible, ti lt the disc careful ly as you remove i t. 4. Close the medi a tray a nd pla ce the di sc in a prote ctive c ase. Removing an optical disc (without po wer) If externa l or battery pow er is una vaila ble: 1. Insert the end of a pape r cl ip (1) into the relea se acce ss in the front b ezel of the driv e. 2. Press in gently on the pap er clip unti l the tray is released, an d then pull out the tray (2) until it stops . 3. Remove the disc (3) from the tray by gently pressing down on the spindle whi le liftin g the outer edges of the dis c. Ho ld the disc by the edges and av oid touc hing t he flat surf aces. NOTE If the tr ay is not ful ly acc essible, tilt t he dis c ca reful ly as you remo ve i t. 4. Avoiding standby or hibe rnati on CAUTION To prevent possib le audio and video degrada tion, or loss of audio or video pla yback functio nality, do not i nitiat e stan dby or h ibern ation while re ading or writi ng to a CD or DVD. To prevent lo ss of inform ation, do not in itiate st andby or hibern ation when writing to a CD or DVD. If s tandby or hibe rnatio n is ac ciden tally initiate d dur ing p layback of a dis c: â Your playb ack ma y be inter rupte d. â You may see t he followi ng war ning: "Putting the c omputer into hi bernatio n or standby may stop the playb ack.
