Adding or replacin g a memory module The co mputer has one mem ory modu le compar tment, wh ich is located on the bottom of the comp uter. The m emory capaci ty of the co mputer can be upg raded by addi ng a m emory modu le to the va cant expans ion m emory modu le slot or by upgradi ng the existin g memo ry m odule in t he pr imary memor y module s lot. WARNING! To re duce the risk of electr ic shoc k an d damage t o the e quipm ent, unp lug th e power c ord and remove all b atteri es bef ore i nstall ing a mem ory module . CAUTION: Electros tatic d ischarg e (ESD) can d amage e lectroni c compon ents. B efore beginn ing an y proce dure, ens ure t hat yo u are di scharge d of s tatic electri city by touc hing a groun ded m etal o bject. NOT E: To use a dual-c hanne l configu ratio n when adding a second mem ory modul e, be sure tha t both mem ory module s are the sam e size. To add or rep lace a m emor y module : 1. Save yo ur work . 2. Shut down the c omputer a nd cl ose th e displ ay. If you ar e no t sure w hether the com puter is o ff or in Hi bernatio n, tur n the c omput er on by pres sing the pow er button . Then s hut dow n the comput er throu gh the opera ting s ystem. 3. Disconne ct al l extern al dev ices c onnected to th e com puter . 4. Unplug the power c ord from the AC o utlet. 5. Turn th e com puter ups ide d own on a flat surf ace. 6. Remove the b attery from the com puter. 7. Loosen th e 3 me mory modul e com partment screws (1) . 1
8. Lift the memory m odule compa rtment c over (2) away fro m the compu ter. 9. If you ar e replac ing a memo ry modu le, re move the ex istin g mem ory mo dule: a. Pull aw ay th e rete nti on cl ips (1) on each side of the memor y modul e. The memory mo dule tilts up. b. Grasp the edge o f the m emory modu le (2) , and ge ntly pull the m odule out of the me mory module sl ot. CAUTION: To prevent dam age to the memory module, hold the mem ory module by the edges onl y. Do not to uch th e compone nts on the mem ory m odule. To prot ect a me mory mo dule a fter rem oval, place it in an electr ostatic- safe contai ner. 10. Insert a new me mory module: 2 Adding or r eplacing a me mory m odule
CAUTION: To preve nt dam age to the memor y modul e, hol d the m emory module by the e dges only. Do not touch the componen ts on the memor y module. a. Alig n the notched edge (1) of the memo ry modul e with the ta b in t he mem ory mod ule slot . b. With the memor y modul e at a 45-de gree ang le fr om the surfa ce of the memor y modul e compar tment, pre ss the m odule (2) into the memor y modul e slot until i t is sea ted. c. Gent ly press the mem ory mod ule (3) down, app lying pressu re to both th e left a nd right e dges of the memo ry module, unti l the reten tion cli ps snap int o place. CAUTION: To prevent damage to the memory modul e, be sure that y ou do n ot ben d the memor y mo dule. 11. Align th e tabs (1) on the memor y modul e com partm ent cove r with the n otches on the c ompute r. 12. Clos e th e cover (2) . 13. Tighten the 3 mem ory module compartme nt screws (3) . 14. Replace the ba ttery. 3
