HP M900 Monitor Userâs Guide Important Safety Instructions 2 English Important Safety Instructions Before you plug in your new display, read these important safety instructions. WARNING Connect the display only to a grounded power outlet. Use the power cord supplied with the display or one with a properly grounded plug. Ensure the cable meets your countryâs standards for safety. To avoid the risk of an electric shock, do not open the cover of the display. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. To completely disconnect power at the display, remove the power cord from the power outlet. Ensure that the power outlet is easily accessible. The display is quite heavy (the weight is shown in the technical specifications). We recommend you ask the assistance of a second person when lifting or moving it. Multi-synchronous means that the display supports a range of video modes. It is optimized to be used with all Hewlett-Packard PCs. Your HP D2843A color display has the following features: ⢠A 19-inch flat square tube, with a 18-inch viewable image, and 0.26 mm dot pitch for excellent graphics. Anti-glare, multilayer coating to minimize reflection. ⢠Support of video modes up to Ultra VGA 1280 at 85 Hz refresh rates, and up to Ultra VGA 1600 using a 75 Hz refresh rate. ⢠Direct image adjustment from the ergonomic control panel. HP M900 Monitor Userâs Guide Setting Up Your Display 4 English Setting Up Your Display Where to Place the Display Place your display on a flat sturdy surface. Ensure the operating site is free from excessive heat, moisture, and sources of electromagnetic fields. Sources of electromagnetic fields include transformers, motors, and other displays. Connecting the Cables Before you connect any cables, refer to the safety instructions at the beginning of this manual and make sure your PC and display are switched off. 1 Connect the video cable to the video input on the back of your display. Tighten the thumbscrews on the plug. 2 Connect the video cable (it has a 15-pin plug) to the video outlet on your PC. Tighten the thumbscrews on the plug. 3 Connect the power cord to the display. 4 Plug the power cord into the power outlet. NOTE The location of your PCâs video outlet may be different to the one shown in the diagram. Refer to the manual that came with your PC, if necessary. You can adjust the quality, position, size and shape of the displayed image using the control panel on the front of the display. You can also store the settings that you make. Your Displayâs Onscreen Menus Your display features onscreen menus to help you make adjustments. To change the language of the menus, press and at the same time. HP M900 Monitor Userâs Guide Using Your Display 6 English Making Basic Adjustments To adjust the contrast (image white level) use these buttons. Contrast is the difference in brightness between the dark and light parts of the displayed image. To adjust the overall picture brightness (image black level) use these buttons. Set the brightness level so that the dark areas of the displayed image remain black. Your display will store brightness and contrast levels automatically. Adjusting the Size, Shape, and Position of the Displayed Image Horizontal Size and Position Press . Use and to adjust the horizontal position of the displayed image. Use and to adjust the horizontal size. Vertical Size and Position Press . Use and to adjust the vertical position of the displayed image. Use and to adjust the vertical size. Rotation control Depending on the orientation of your display, for example, whether it faces north or south, you may experience some rotation of the image. This effect is due to the influence of the earth's magnetic field and is normal for all displays. To adjust the displayed image, press . Then press to rotate the image clockwise, or press to rotate the image counter-clockwise. Pincushion control If the vertical edges of the image appear to bow in or out, press and then use and to reshape. For best results, adjust so that the left edge of the image is straight. For best resul ts, adjust so that the left edge of the image is vertical. You can then use the Right Trapezoid control described later to adjust the right edge. Right Pincushion control This control only affects the right side of the image. Press . Then press to make the right side bow outwards, or press to make it bow inwards. For best results, use the Pincushion control to make the left side of the image straight before using this control to adjust the right side. Right Trapezoid control This control only affects the right side of the image. Press . Then press to expand the top right side of the image, or press to expand the bottom right side. For best results, use the Trapezoid control to make the left side of the image vertical before using this control to adjust the right side. Reducing Moire Under certain circumstances, the displayed image may be distorted by the Moire effect. This usually happens when your display is showing certain complex patterns, and can often be reduced by adjusting the brightness and contrast settings of your display, or by adjusting the vertical or horizontal size. If this does not work, you can reduce vertical Moire by pressing and at the same time. Then press and to increase or decrease the amount of vertical Moi re reduction, or press to turn off vertical Moire reduction. To store your size, position, shape and Moire reduction settings, press ST ORE . The settings will be stored for the current video mode, and will be used whenever you work in that video mode. Adjusting the Tint of the Displayed Image Your display combines red, blue, and green to show a full color image. Under certain circumstances you ma y wish to change the proportions of red, blue, and green used by the display, known as the co lor temperature . Choosing a Preset Color Temperature Your display has three factory-set color temperature settings. Press and then press and to cycle through the settings. Setting Your Own Color Temperature You can also set your own color temperature setting. This table shows how. When a color is set to full intensity, an attempt to increase that color has the effect of reducing the intensity of the other two colors. So if green is already set to full intensity, an attempt to increase its intensity will instead reduce the intensity of red and blue, and the image will appear greener as a result. If you make a mistake, you can undo the color change you have just made by pressing and at the same time, and holding them down for about two seconds. English 9 HP M900 Monitor Userâs Gu ide Using Your Display Storing Your Color Temperature Setting To store your color temperature setting, adjust the red, green and blue levels and then press ST O RE . You can restore this color temperature at any time, in any video mode, by pressing and then using and to select USER . Your display does not store different color temperature settings for different video modes. Degaussing Your Display To degauss the display, press DEGA USS . Your display may need degaussing if you see color impurities in the displayed image, caused by magnetic interference. NOTE Your display degausses itself automatically when you turn it on. Do not degauss your display repeatedlyâleave at least ten minutes between presses of the DEGA USS button. Getting Information About Your Display Whenever you change video mode, your display will indicate for a few seconds the Horizontal Frequency and Vertical Frequency of the new video mode. If you want information on the current video mode, press . If you have turned on Moire reduction, you will also see this symbol: . If only vertical Moire reduction is turned on, only the V will be visible. If only horizontal Moire reduction is turned on, you will see only the H . Recalling Your Displayâs Factory Presets CAUTION Recalling the factory presets will delete any settings you have made for the video mode you are working in and replace them with those preset at the factory . To recall your displayâs factory settings for the video mode you are working in, press and at the same time, and hold them down for two seconds. HP M900 Monitor Userâs Guide Using Your Display 10 Englis h Setting the Amount of Displayed Information To set the amount of displayed information, change the screen resolution of your PC. The higher the screen resolution, the more information you can see on the screen. It is recommended that you use a resolution of 1280 Ã 1024 at 85 Hz. This gives easy-to-read characters, a large amount of displayed information, and a flicker-free image. To find out which resolutions are supported by your display, refer to âSupported Video Modesâ. To change the screen resolution, please refer to the manual that came with your PC or your operating system documentation, if necessary. Your display has a Plug and Play capability (VESA DDC1/2B standard) that enables it to identify itself to suitably equipped HP Vectra PCs. This will automatically give you the best refresh rate for the resolution that you have set. NOTE If you have trouble configuring your operating system to work with your display, refer to the manual that came with your PC or your operating system documentation. Software updates and further information are available on HPâs website. Minimizing Eye Strain To avoid screen flicker and minimize eye strain, use the highest supported image refresh rate for the chosen resolution. It is recommended that you use a refresh rate of 85 Hz. The image refresh rate is the number of times per second that the image is refreshed. To find out which image refresh rates are supported by your display, refer to âSupported Video Modesâ. To set the image refresh rate (also known as the vertical frequency ), refer to the manual that came with your PC or your operating system documentation, if necessary. English 11 HP M900 Monitor Userâs Gu ide Using Your Display Minimizing Energy Consumption If your PC supports VESA display power management (available on many HP Vectra PCs), you can minimize the power consumed by the display. There are two power saving modes: ⢠Standby mode 1 (uses less than 28W). In this mode, the displayâs front panel indicator light blinks quickly. ⢠Sleep mode 2 (uses less than 5 W). In this mode, the displayâs front panel indicator light blinks slowly. To set these power saving modes, refer to the manual that came with your PC. If your screen is not displaying an image, check the front panel indicator light first â your display may be in a power saving mode. 1. Standby mode is activated w hen either vertical sync hronization or hori zontal synchronization is cut by the video cont roller . 2. Doing so may block the display vents and cause damage to the display due to overheating. Do not let liquid get on or into the display. To maximize screen life and prevent damage to the picture tube (such as burned phosphor due to leaving the same image on the screen for a long time), it is recommended that you: ⢠Use the display power management system (on HP Vectra PCs) or a screen saver program. ⢠Avoid setting contrast and brightness to their maximum levels for prolonged periods. ⢠If you do not have a power management system or a screen saver program, switch the display off or reduce the brightness and contrast to minimum levels when the display is not in use. Your display has an anti-glare, anti-static screen coating. To prevent damage to the display screenâs coating, use a regular household glass cleaner when cleaning the screen. To clean the screen: 1 Switch the display off and remove the power plug (pull the plug, not the cable). 2 Wet a soft cotton cloth with the cleaning solution and gently wipe the screen. Do not spray cleaner onto the screen because the cleaner may drip inside the display. 3 Dry with a clean, soft cotton cloth. Your HP display has been designed to respect the environment as much as possible. HP can also take back your old display for recycling when it reaches the end of its useful life. In fact, HP has a product take-back program in several countries. The collected equipment is sent to of HPâs recycling facilities in Europe or the USA. As many parts as possible are reused. The remainder is recycled. Special care is taken for batteries and other potentially toxic substances, which are reduced to non-harmful components through a special chemical process. If you require more details about HPâs product take-back program, contact your dealer or your nearest HP Sales Office. The cathode ray tube used in this display does not contain cadmium. WARNING Connect the display only to a grounded power outlet. Use the power cord supplied with the display or one with a properly grounded plug. Ensure the cable meets your countryâs standards for safety. To avoid the risk of an electric shock, do not open the cover of the display. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. To completely disconnect power at the display, remove the power cord from the power outlet. Ensure that the power outlet is easily accessible. Ensure the operating site is free from excessive heat, moisture, and sources of electromagnetic fields. Sources of electromagnetic fields include transformers, motors, and other displays. Connecting the Cables Before you connect any cables, refer to the safety instructions at the beginning of this manual and make sure your PC and display are switched off. 1 Connect the video cable to the video input on the back of your display. Tighten the thumbscrews on the plug. 2 Connect the video cable (it has a 15-pin plug) to the video outlet on your PC. Tighten the thumbscrews on the plug. 3 Connect the power cord to the display. 4 Plug the power cord into the power outlet. Contrast is the difference in brightness between the dark and light parts of the displayed image. To adjust the overall picture brightness (image black level) use these buttons. Set the brightness level so that the dark areas of the displayed image remain black. Your display will store brightness and contrast levels automatically. Adjusting the Size, Shape, and Position of the Displayed Image Horizontal Size and Position Press . Use and to adjust the horizontal position of the displayed image. Use and to adjust the horizontal size. Vertical Size and Position Press . Use and to adjust the vertical position of the displayed image. Use and to adjust the vertical size. Rotation control Depending on the orientation of your display, for example, whether it faces north or south, you may experience some rotation of the image. This effect is due to the influence of the earth's magnetic field and is normal for all displays. To adjust the displayed image, press . Then press to rotate the image clockwise, or press to rotate the image counter-clockwise. Pincushion control If the vertical edges of the image appear to bow in or out, press and then use and to reshape. For best results, adjust so that the left edge of the image is straight. For best resul ts, adjust so that the left edge of the image is vertical. You can then use the Right Trapezoid control described later to adjust the right edge. Right Pincushion control This control only affects the right side of the image. Press . Then press to make the right side bow outwards, or press to make it bow inwards. For best results, use the Pincushion control to make the left side of the image straight before using this control to adjust the right side. Right Trapezoid control This control only affects the right side of the image. Press . Then press to expand the top right side of the image, or press to expand the bottom right side. For best results, use the Trapezoid control to make the left side of the image vertical before using this control to adjust the right side. Reducing Moire Under certain circumstances, the displayed image may be distorted by the Moire effect. This usually happens when your display is showing certain complex patterns, and can often be reduced by adjusting the brightness and contrast settings of your display, or by adjusting the vertical or horizontal size. If this does not work, you can reduce vertical Moire by pressing and at the same time. Then press and to increase or decrease the amount of vertical Moi re reduction, or press to turn off vertical Moire reduction. To store your size, position, shape and Moire reduction settings, press ST ORE . The settings will be stored for the current video mode, and will be used whenever you work in that video mode. Adjusting the Tint of the Displayed Image Your display combines red, blue, and green to show a full color image. Under certain circumstances you ma y wish to change the proportions of red, blue, and green used by the display, known as the co lor temperature . Choosing a Preset Color Temperature Your display has three factory-set color temperature settings. Press and then press and to cycle through the settings. Setting Your Own Color Temperature You can also set your own color temperature setting. This table shows how. When a color is set to full intensity, an attempt to increase that color has the effect of reducing the intensity of the other two colors. So if green is already set to full intensity, an attempt to increase its intensity will instead reduce the intensity of red and blue, and the image will appear greener as a result. If you make a mistake, you can undo the color change you have just made by pressing and at the same time, and holding them down for about two seconds. You can restore this color temperature at any time, in any video mode, by pressing and then using and to select USER . Your display does not store different color temperature settings for different video modes. Degaussing Your Display To degauss the display, press DEGA USS . Your display may need degaussing if you see color impurities in the displayed image, caused by magnetic interference. NOTE Your display degausses itself automatically when you turn it on. Do not degauss your display repeatedlyâleave at least ten minutes between presses of the DEGA USS button. Getting Information About Your Display Whenever you change video mode, your display will indicate for a few seconds the Horizontal Frequency and Vertical Frequency of the new video mode. If you want information on the current video mode, press . If you have turned on Moire reduction, you will also see this symbol: . If only vertical Moire reduction is turned on, only the V will be visible. If only horizontal Moire reduction is turned on, you will see only the H . Recalling Your Displayâs Factory Presets CAUTION Recalling the factory presets will delete any settings you have made for the video mode you are working in and replace them with those preset at the factory . To recall your displayâs factory settings for the video mode you are working in, press and at the same time, and hold them down for two seconds. The higher the screen resolution, the more information you can see on the screen. It is recommended that you use a resolution of 1280 Ã 1024 at 85 Hz. This gives easy-to-read characters, a large amount of displayed information, and a flicker-free image. To find out which resolutions are supported by your display, refer to âSupported Video Modesâ. To change the screen resolution, please refer to the manual that came with your PC or your operating system documentation, if necessary. Your display has a Plug and Play capability (VESA DDC1/2B standard) that enables it to identify itself to suitably equipped HP Vectra PCs. This will automatically give you the best refresh rate for the resolution that you have set. NOTE If you have trouble configuring your operating system to work with your display, refer to the manual that came with your PC or your operating system documentation. Software updates and further information are available on HPâs website. Minimizing Eye Strain To avoid screen flicker and minimize eye strain, use the highest supported image refresh rate for the chosen resolution. It is recommended that you use a refresh rate of 85 Hz. The image refresh rate is the number of times per second that the image is refreshed. To find out which image refresh rates are supported by your display, refer to âSupported Video Modesâ. To set the image refresh rate (also known as the vertical frequency ), refer to the manual that came with your PC or your operating system documentation, if necessary. There are two power saving modes: ⢠Standby mode 1 (uses less than 28W). In this mode, the displayâs front panel indicator light blinks quickly. ⢠Sleep mode 2 (uses less than 5 W). In this mode, the displayâs front panel indicator light blinks slowly. To set these power saving modes, refer to the manual that came with your PC. Doing so may block the display vents and cause damage to the display due to overheating. Do not let liquid get on or into the display. To maximize screen life and prevent damage to the picture tube (such as burned phosphor due to leaving the same image on the screen for a long time), it is recommended that you: ⢠Use the display power management system (on HP Vectra PCs) or a screen saver program. ⢠Avoid setting contrast and brightness to their maximum levels for prolonged periods. ⢠If you do not have a power management system or a screen saver program, switch the display off or reduce the brightness and contrast to minimum levels when the display is not in use. Your display has an anti-glare, anti-static screen coating. To prevent damage to the display screenâs coating, use a regular household glass cleaner when cleaning the screen. To clean the screen: 1 Switch the display off and remove the power plug (pull the plug, not the cable). 2 Wet a soft cotton cloth with the cleaning solution and gently wipe the screen. Do not spray cleaner onto the screen because the cleaner may drip inside the display. 3 Dry with a clean, soft cotton cloth.
