Top compo nents TouchPad Component Description (1) TouchPad light ● Blue: TouchPad is enabled. ● Amber: TouchPad is disabled. (2) TouchPad* Moves the pointer and selects or activates items on the screen. (3) TouchPad horizontal scroll zone* Scrolls left or right . (4) Left TouchPad button* Functions like the left button on an external mouse. (5) TouchPad on/off button Enables/disables the TouchPad . (6) TouchPad vertical scroll zone* Scrolls up or down. (7) Right TouchPad button* Functions like the right button on an external mouse. *This table describes factory settings. Lights Component Description (1) Power light* ● On: The computer is on. ● Blinking: The computer is in the S leep state. ● Off: The computer is off or in Hibernation. (2) Caps lock light On: Caps lock is on. *The 2 power lights display the same information. The light on t he power button is visible only when the computer is open. The power light on the front of the computer is visible whether the computer is open or closed. 4 Chapter 2 Com ponents
Buttons and speakers Component Description (1) Power button* ● When the computer is off, press the button to turn on the computer. ● When the computer is on, press the button t o initiate Slee p. ● When the computer is in the Sleep state, press the button briefly to exit Sleep. ● When the com puter is in Hibernation, pr ess the but ton briefly to exit Hibernation. If the com puter has stopped responding and Windows® shutdown procedures are ineffective , press and hold the power button for at least 5 seconds to turn off the computer. To learn more about your power settings, select Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Power Options . (2) Speakers (2) Produce sound. *This table describes factory s ettings. Keys Component Description (1) esc key Displays system infor mation when pressed in combination with the fn key. (2) fn key Executes frequently us ed system functions w hen pressed in combination with a f unction key or the esc key. (3) Windows logo key Displays the Window s Start menu . (4) Embedded numeric key pad keys Can be used like the keys on an external numeric keypad. (5) Windows applications key Displays a short cut menu for items beneat h the pointer. (6) Function keys Execute frequently used system functions when pressed in combination with the fn key. 6 Chapter 2 Com ponents
Front comp onent s Component Description (1) Power light* ● On: The computer is on. ● Blinking: The computer is in t he Sleep state. ● Off: The computer is off or in Hibernation. (2) Battery light ● On: A battery is charging. ● Blinking: A battery that is the only available power source has reached a low bat tery level or a cr itical battery level. When the battery reaches a critical battery level, the battery light begins blinking rapidly. ● Off: If the computer is plugged into an external power source, the light is turned off when all batteries in the computer are fully charged. If the computer is not plugged into an external power source, the lig ht stays off until the ba ttery reaches a low battery level. (3) Drive light Blinking: The hard dr ive or optical dr ive is be ing access ed. (4) Wireless switc h Turns the wirele ss feature on o r off, but does not create a wireles s connection. NOTE: To establish a wireless connection, a wireless network must already be set up. (5) Wire le ss ligh t ● Blue: An integrated wireles s device, suc h as a wireles s local area network (LAN) device and/or a Bluetooth® device, is turned on. ● Amber: An integrated wireless device is turned off. (6) Audio-in (microphone) jack Connects an op tional computer headset micropho ne, stereo arra y microphone, or monaural microp hone. (7) Audio-out (headphone) jack Produces sound when connected to optional powered stereo speakers, headp hones, ear buds, a headset, or television audio. *The 2 power lights display the same information. The light on the power button is visible only when the computer is open. The power light on the front of the computer is visible whether the computer is open or closed. Front compon ents 7
Rear c omponent s Compone nt Description Vents (2) Enable airflow to cool internal components. NOTE: The computer fan s tarts up a utomatically to cool int ernal components and prevent overheat ing. It is normal for the internal fan to cycle on and off during routine operation. 8 Chapter 2 Com ponents
Right-side compone nts Component Description (1) Optical drive Reads optical discs and, on select models, also writes to optical discs. (2) USB port Connects an optional USB device. (3) Power connector Connects an AC adapter. (4) Security cable slot Attaches an optio nal security cable to the computer. NOTE: The security cable is designed to act as a deterrent, but may not prevent the computer from being mishandled or stolen. Right-si de compon ents 9
Left-side components Component Description (1) S-Video-out jack Connects an optional S -Video device suc h as a television, VCR, camcorder, overhead projector, or v ideo captur e card. (2) External monitor port Connects an externa l VGA monitor or projector. RJ-45 (network) jack Connects a network cable. (4) RJ-11 (modem) jack Connects a modem c able. (5) USB ports (2) Connect optional USB devices. (6) Digital Media Slot light (select m odels only) On: A digital card is being acc essed. (7) Digital Media Slot (selec t models only) Supports the follo wing optional digital card formats: Secure Digital (SD) Memory Card, MultiMedi aCard ( MMC), M emory S tick ( MS), Memory Stick Pro (M SP), xD- Picture Card (X D). 10 Chapter 2 Com ponents (3)
Bottom components Component Description (1) Battery bay Holds the battery. (2) Battery release latch Releases the battery from the battery bay. (3) Vents (5) Enable airflow to cool internal c omponents. NOTE: The computer fan s tarts up automatically to c ool internal components and prevent overhe ating. It is no rmal for the int ernal fan to cycle on and off during routine operation. (4) Memory module compartment Contains the mem ory module slots. (5) Hard drive bay Holds the hard drive. Display compon ents Component Description (1) Intern al di spla y switc h Turns off the display if the display is closed while t he computer is turned on. (2) Internal micropho nes (2) Record sound. NOTE: If there is a m icrophone ico n next to each mi crophone opening, your comput er has internal microphones. (3) Integrated webcam lig ht (select models only) On: The webcam is in use. The serv ice tag l abel is aff ixed to t he botto m of t he com puter . ● Micros oft® Certi ficate of Au thentic ity— Contain s the Windo ws® Pro duct Key . You may need the Product Key to update or troub leshoot the operat ing syste m. This c ertif icate is a ffixed to the bottom of the comput er. ● Regula tory label— Provid es regu latory info rmati on about the compute r. The regu latory lab el is affixed ins ide the b attery b ay. ● Modem ap prova l labe l—Pr ovides regul atory in format ion ab out the mode m and lists the a gency approval mar kings requ ired by some of the coun tries in whic h the m odem has been appr oved for use. You may nee d this informa tion when tr aveling inte rnati onally .
