Ensure the operating site is free from excessive heat, moisture, and sources of electromagnetic fields. Sources of electromagnetic fields include transformers, motors and other monitors. Connecting the Cables 1 Before you connect any cables, refer to the safety instructions at the beginning of this manual. Make sure your computer and monitor are switched off. 2 Connect the video input cable (it has a 15-pin plug) to one of the video outlets on your computer. You can use both outlets to connect two computers. 3 Tighten the thumbscrews on the plug. 4 Connect the power cord to the monitor. 5 Plug the power cord into the power outlet. English English 5 HP 21â Color Monitor Userâs Guide How To Install The Drivers How To Install The Drivers Windows 95 or Windows 98 Operating Systems: In order to take advantage of the Plug & Play functionality of your Windows 95/98 operating system, HP Monitors come with a driver that lets you gain full optimization of your monitor. To install this driver follow these steps: 1 Click the 'Start' button. 2 Select 'Settings' and then Click 'Control Panel'. 3 Double-click the 'Display' icon and select the 'Settings' tab. 4 Select the 'Advanced Properties' tab. 5 Select the 'Monitor' tab and then click the 'Change' button in order to select the model of HP Monitor you are using. 6 Click the 'Have Disk...' button. 7 Click the 'Browse...' button. 8 Find and select the ' HPMON_XX.INF ' file on your CD ROM under the '\Driver' directory. 9 Press the 'OK' button and select your monitor type in the 'Models' box. Your operating system and your HP Monitor are now set up to work in optimum conditions. If your Windows 95/98 version is different or you need more detailed installation information, please refer to Windows 95/98 user's manual. Power Switch and Indicator 7 This button turns the monitor on and off. The power indicator lights up in green when the monitor is turned on, and either flashes in green and orange or lights up in orange when the monitor is in power saving modes. NOTE If the power management function of your computer is working properly, you do not need to switch the monitor off or on. This occurs automatically.

NOTE If no signal is input to the selected connector, the message NO INPUT SIGNAL appears on the screen. After a few seconds, the monitor enters power saving mode. If this happens, switch to the other connector.
English English 11 HP 21â Color Monitor Userâs Guide Using Your Monitor Automatically sizing and centering the picture You can easily adjust the picture to fill the screen by pressing the (auto sizing and centering) button. 1 Press the button. The picture automatically fills the screen. NOTE This function is intended for use with a computer that provides a full- screen picture. It may not work properly if the background color is dark or if the input picture does not fill the screen to the edges. Pictures with an aspect ratio of 5:4 (resolution: 1280 Ã 1024 or 1600 Ã 1280) are displayed at their actual resolution and do not fill the screen to the edges. The displayed image moves for a few seconds when the button is pressed. This is not a malfunction.

If the signal matches one of the monitorâs factory preset modes, the resolution is also displayed. Adjusting the brightness and contrast Brightness and contrast adjustments are made using a separate BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST menu. These settings are stored in memory for the signals from the currently selected input connector. 1 Press either the (brightness) / or (contrast) / button. The BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST menu appears on the screen. 2 Press the (brightness) / buttons to adjust the brightness or (contrast) / buttons to adjust the contrast. For more information about using the sRGB mode, see page 21. The menu automatically disappears after about 3 seconds. Adjusting the size of the picture (SIZE/CENTER) This setting is stored in memory for the current input signal. 1 Press the button. The SIZE/CENTER menu appears on the screen. 3 Press the / buttons to select (zoom), and press the / buttons to enlarge or reduce the picture. NOTE Adjustment stops when either the horizontal or vertical size reaches its maximum or minimum value. Adjusting the shape of the picture (GEOMETRY) The GEOMETRY settings allow you to adjust the rotation and shape of the picture. The (rotation) setting is stored in memory for all input signals. All other settings are stored in memory for the current input signal. 1 Press the button. The main MENU appears on the screen. 2 Press the / buttons to highlight GEOMETRY and press the button again. The GEOMETRY menu appears on the screen. 3 Press the / buttons to select the desired adjustment item. Then press the / buttons to make the adjustment. Adjusting the convergence (CONVERGENCE) The CONVERGENCE settings allow you to adjust the quality of the picture by controlling the convergence. The convergence refers to the alignment of the red, green, and blue color signals. If you see red or blue shadows around letters or lines, adjust the convergence. These settings are stored in memory for all input signals. 1 Press the button. The main MENU appears on the screen. Adjusting the quality of the picture (SCREEN) The SCREEN settings allow you to adjust the quality of the picture by controlling the moire and the landing. ⢠If the color is irregular at the corners of the screen, adjust the landing. ⢠If elliptical or wavy patterns appear on the screen, cancel the moire. The CANCEL MOIRE and MOIRE ADJUST settings are stored in memory for the current input signal. All other settings are stored in memory for all input signals. 1 Press the button. It may appear due to interference between the pattern of the picture on the screen and the phosphor pitch pattern of the monitor. NOTE The picture may become fuzzy when CANCEL MOIRE is set to ON. Adjusting the color of the picture (COLOR) The COLOR settings allow you to adjust the pictureâs color temperature by changing the color level of the white color field. Colors appear reddish if the temperature is low, and bluish if the temperature is high. This adjustment is useful for matching the monitorâs color to a printed pictureâs colors. 1 Press the button. The main MENU appears on the screen. Select To LANDING reduce any color irregularities in the screenâs top left corner to a minimum. The COLOR menu appears on the screen. 3 Press the / buttons to select the adjustment mode. There are three types of adjustment modes, EASY, EXPERT and sRGB. 4 Press the / buttons to select the desired adjustment item. Then press the / buttons to make the adjustment. Adjust the selected mode according to the following instructions. EASY mode 1 Press the / buttons to select color temperature , then press the / buttons to select a color temperature. The preset color temperatures are 5000K, 6500K, and 9300K. Since the default setting is 9300K, the whites will change from a bluish hue to a reddish hue as the temperature is lowered to 6500K and 5000K. 2 If necessary, fine tune the color temperature. Press the / buttons to select color temperature adjustment then press the / buttons to fine tune the color temperature. Setting the color temperature for each of the video input connectors You can set the fine tuning of the color temperature in EASY or EXPERT mode for each of the video input connectors (INPUT 1 and INPUT 2). 1 Select the same adjustment mode and color temperature in the COLOR menu for both INPUT 1 and INPUT 2. 2 Fine tune the color temperature in each menu for INPUT 1 and I N P U T 2 . T h e s e t t i n g s a r e s t o r e d i n m e m o r y f o r e a c h o f t h e I N P U T 1 and INPUT 2 connectors. 1 Press the / buttons to select color temperature , then press the / buttons to select a color temperature. 2 Press the / buttons to select adjustment , then press the / buttons to adjust the BIAS (black level). This adjusts the dark areas of an image. 3 Press the / buttons to select adjustment , then press the / buttons to adjust the GAIN (white level). This adjusts the light areas of an image. You can adjust the R (red), G (green), B (blue) component of the input signal when making changes to items and . English English 21 HP 21â Color Monitor Userâs Guide Customizing Your Monitor sRGB mode The sRGB color setting is an industry standard color space protocol designed to correlate the displayed and printed colors of sRGB compliant computer products. To adjust the colors to the sRGB profile, simply select sRGB mode in the COLOR menu. However, in order to display the sRGB colors correctly ( γ =2.2, 6500K), you must set your computer to the sRGB profile and adjust the brightness ( ) and contrast to the numbers shown in the menu. For information on how to change the brightness ( ) and contrast, see page 14. NOTE Your computer and other connected products (such as a printer), must be sRGB compliant. Restoring the color from the EASY or sRGB menus The colors of most display monitors tend to gradually lose brilliance over several years of service. The COLOR RETURN feature found in the EASY and sRGB menus allows you to restore the color to the original factory quality levels. The explanation below explains how to restore the monitorâs color from the EASY menu. 1 Press the / buttons to select EASY or sRGB mode. 2 First press the / buttons to select (COLOR RETURN), then press the button. The picture disappears while the color is being restored (about 2 seconds). After the color is restored, the picture reappears on the screen. NOTE Before using this feature, the monitor must be in normal operation mode (green power indicator on) for at least 30 minutes. If the monitor goes into power saving mode, you must return the monitor to normal operation mode and wait for 30 minutes for the monitor to be ready. If the monitor is not ready, the following message will appear. The monitor may gradually lose its ability to perform this function due to the natural aging of the picture tube. Additional settings (OPTION) You can manually degauss the monitor, change the menu position, and lock the controls. 1 Press the button. The main MENU appears on the screen. 2 Press the / buttons to highlight OPTION and press the button again. The OPTION menu appears on the screen. 3 Press the / buttons to select the desired adjustment item. Adjust the selected item according to the following instructions. Degaussing the screen The monitor is automatically degaussed when the power is turned on. To manually degauss the monitor 1 Press the / buttons to select (DEGAUSS). Then press the button. 2 The screen is degaussed for about 2 seconds. If a second degauss cycle is needed, allow a minimum interval of 20 minutes for the best result. Changing the menu position Change the menu position if it is blocking an image on the screen. To change the menu on-screen position: Press the / buttons to select (OSD H POSITION) for horizontal adjustment, or (OSD V POSITION) for vertical adjustment. Then press the button to select ON. NOTE Only the (power) switch, EXIT, and (CONTROL LOCK) of the OPTION menu will operate. If any other items are selected, the mark appears on the screen. To cancel the control lock Repeat the procedure above and set (CONTROL LOCK) to OFF. Resetting the adjustments This monitor has three reset methods. Use the (reset) button to reset the adjustments. Resetting a single adjustment item Use the , / buttons to select the adjustment item you want to reset, and press the (reset) button. Resetting all of the adjustment data for the current input signal Press the (reset) button when no menu is displayed on the screen. Note that the following items are not reset by this method: ⢠on-screen menu language ⢠adjustment mode in the COLOR menu (EASY, EXPERT, sRGB) ⢠on-screen menu position ⢠control lock Resetting all of the adjustment data for all input signals Press and hold the (reset) button for more than two seconds. HP 21â Color Monitor Userâs Guide Customizing Your Monitor 24 English English Minimizing Eye Strain To avoid screen flicker and minimize eye strain, use the highest supported image refresh rate for the chosen resolution. It is recommended that you use a refresh rate of 85 Hz. The image refresh rate is the number of times per second that the image is refreshed. Minimizing Energy Consumption If your computer supports VESA monitor power management (available on many HP computers), you can minimize the power consumed by the monitor. There are two power saving modes: ⢠Suspend mode 1 (uses less or equal than 10W). In this mode, the monitor's front panel indicator light is amber. ⢠Active off mode 2 (uses less or equal than 1W). In this mode, the monitor's front panel indicator light is amber. To set these power saving modes, refer to the manual that came with your computer. If your screen is not displaying an image, check the front panel indicator light first as your monitor may be in a power saving mode. Supported Video Modes Your monitor comes with the standard modes shown in the table below. It also supports intermediate video modes. If thin lines appear on your screen (damper wires) The lines you are experiencing on your screen are normal for the Trinitron monitor and are not a malfunction. These are shadows from the damper wires used to stabilize the aperture grille and are most noticeable when the screenâs background is light (usually white). The aperture grille is the essential element that makes a Trinitron picture tube unique by allowing more light to reach the screen, resulting in a brighter, more detailed picture. On-screen messages If there is something wrong with the input signal, one of the following messages appears on the screen. If NO INPUT SIGNAL appears on the screen 1 The selected connector. This message shows the currently selected connector (INPUT 1 or INPUT 2). 2 The input signal condition NO INPUT SIGNAL. This indicates that no signal is input, or that no signal is input from the selected connector. Doing so may block the monitor vents and cause damage to the monitor due to overheating. Do not let liquid get on or into the monitor. To maximize screen life and prevent damage to the picture tube (such as burned phosphor due to leaving the same image on the screen for a long time), it is recommended that you: ⢠Use the monitor power management system (on HP computers) or a screen saver program. ⢠Avoid setting contrast and brightness to their maximum levels for prolonged periods. ⢠If you do not have a power management system or a screen saver program, switch the monitor off or reduce the brightness and contrast to minimum levels when the monitor is not in use. Your choice has provided you with a product developed for professional use. Your purchase has also contributed to reducing the burden on the environment and also to the further development of environmentally adapted electronics products. Why do we have environmentally labelled computers? In many countries, environmental labelling has become an established method for encouraging the adaptation of goods and services to the environment. The main problem, as far as computers and other electronics equipment are concerned, is that environmentally harmful substances are used both in the products and during their manufacture. Since it is not so far possible to satisfactorily recycle the majority of electronics equipment, most of these potentially damaging substances sooner or later enter nature. There are also other characteristics of a computer, such as energy consumption levels, that are important from the viewpoints of both the work (internal) and natural (external) environments. Since all methods of electricity generation have a negative effect on the environment (e.g. acidic and climate-influencing emissions, radioactive waste), it is vital to save energy. Electronics equipment in offices is often left running continuously and thereby consumes a lot of energy. What does labelling involve? This product meets the requirements for the TCO'99 scheme which provides for international and environmental labelling of personal computers. Their purpose is to prevent, or at least to delay the spread of fire. Up to 30% of the plastic in a computer casing can consist of flame retardant substances. Most flame retardants contain bromine or chloride, and those flame retardants are chemically related to another group of environmental toxins, PCBs. Both the flame retardants containing bromine or chloride and the PCBs are suspected of giving rise to severe health effects, including reproductive damage in fish-eating birds and mammals, due to the bio-accumulative 1 processes. Mercury 2 Mercury is sometimes found in batteries, relays and switches. It damages the nervous system and is toxic in high doses. It also demands that mercury is not present in any of the electrical or electronics components associated with the labelled unit. CFCs (freons) The relevant TCO'99 requirement states that neither CFCs nor HCFCs may be used during the manufacture and assembly of the product. It may appear due to interference between the pattern of the picture on the screen and the phosphor pitch pattern of the monitor. NOTE The picture may become fuzzy when CANCEL MOIRE is set to ON. Adjusting the color of the picture (COLOR) The COLOR settings allow you to adjust the pictureâs color temperature by changing the color level of the white color field. Colors appear reddish if the temperature is low, and bluish if the temperature is high. This adjustment is useful for matching the monitorâs color to a printed pictureâs colors. 1 Press the button. To adjust the colors to the sRGB profile, simply select sRGB mode in the COLOR menu. However, in order to display the sRGB colors correctly ( γ =2.2, 6500K), you must set your computer to the sRGB profile and adjust the brightness ( ) and contrast to the numbers shown in the menu. For information on how to change the brightness ( ) and contrast, see page 14. NOTE Your computer and other connected products (such as a printer), must be sRGB compliant. Restoring the color from the EASY or sRGB menus The colors of most display monitors tend to gradually lose brilliance over several years of service. The COLOR RETURN feature found in the EASY and sRGB menus allows you to restore the color to the original factory quality levels. The explanation below explains how to restore the monitorâs color from the EASY menu. 1 Press the / buttons to select EASY or sRGB mode. 2 First press the / buttons to select (COLOR RETURN), then press the button. The picture disappears while the color is being restored (about 2 seconds). After the color is restored, the picture reappears on the screen. NOTE Before using this feature, the monitor must be in normal operation mode (green power indicator on) for at least 30 minutes. It is recommended that you use a refresh rate of 85 Hz. The image refresh rate is the number of times per second that the image is refreshed. Minimizing Energy Consumption If your computer supports VESA monitor power management (available on many HP computers), you can minimize the power consumed by the monitor. There are two power saving modes: ⢠Suspend mode 1 (uses less or equal than 10W). In this mode, the monitor's front panel indicator light is amber. ⢠Active off mode 2 (uses less or equal than 1W). In this mode, the monitor's front panel indicator light is amber. To set these power saving modes, refer to the manual that came with your computer. If your screen is not displaying an image, check the front panel indicator light first as your monitor may be in a power saving mode. If thin lines appear on your screen (damper wires) The lines you are experiencing on your screen are normal for the Trinitron monitor and are not a malfunction. These are shadows from the damper wires used to stabilize the aperture grille and are most noticeable when the screenâs background is light (usually white). The aperture grille is the essential element that makes a Trinitron picture tube unique by allowing more light to reach the screen, resulting in a brighter, more detailed picture. On-screen messages If there is something wrong with the input signal, one of the following messages appears on the screen. If NO INPUT SIGNAL appears on the screen 1 The selected connector. Your choice has provided you with a product developed for professional use. Your purchase has also contributed to reducing the burden on the environment and also to the further development of environmentally adapted electronics products. Why do we have environmentally labelled computers? In many countries, environmental labelling has become an established method for encouraging the adaptation of goods and services to the environment. The main problem, as far as computers and other electronics equipment are concerned, is that environmentally harmful substances are used both in the products and during their manufacture. Since it is not so far possible to satisfactorily recycle the majority of electronics equipment, most of these potentially damaging substances sooner or later enter nature. There are also other characteristics of a computer, such as energy consumption levels, that are important from the viewpoints of both the work (internal) and natural (external) environments. Since all methods of electricity generation have a negative effect on the environment (e.g. acidic and climate-influencing emissions, radioactive waste), it is vital to save energy. Electronics equipment in offices is often left running continuously and thereby consumes a lot of energy. What does labelling involve?
