The card is more econo mical than c onventional fi lm because you can reu se the card ov er and over ag ain. If you i nst all a C F memory card in yo ur camera, im ages are st ored on the C F memory card rathe r than in the ca mera’ s internal mem ory . Note If your com puter runs W indows NT or if it doe s not have a US B port, you mus t store images on a CF memory card. Then use a CF memory car d reader to trans fer images to your compute r . This chapter d escribes how to u s e your c amera with or without a CF memory card and how to copy images from internal mem ory to a CF memory card. HP photosmart 612 User Guide 38 Determining the n umber of pictures you can take Y ou can store as m any as 1 1 3 images in the camera’s intern al memory . T he number of p ictures that you can take and sto re in the space r emaining in memory dep ends on sever al factors. Unlike con ventional fi lm, each dig it al imag e takes up a differen t amount of space in memory . Images t hat are compl ex and contain many det ail s ta ke up m ore s pac e, wh ereas s impl e imag es t ake up less s p ace. Pic tures taken fu ll size occ upy more space, wh ereas picture s taken with digital z oom occupy le ss space. Howev er , the most imp ortant factor in im age size is the i mage quality y ou have sele cted. The numb er of images remainin g in memory is indicated in the status LCD on top of the camera. It is an appr oximate numbe r that decreases as you take pictur es. Note Y ou can take each pictur e with a different sett ing. As you chan ge the settin gs, the number of remaining images t hat is indic ated on the s t atus LCD c hanges. The numb er of images y ou can store i n the camera de pends primar ily on imag e quality: l Pictur es taken with an image qualit y of BEST (t hree stars) require th e most mem ory . Y ou can store approx imately 7 suc h image s on the came ra. l Pictur es taken with an image qualit y of BETTER (two stars) require l ess memory . Y ou can stor e approxi mately 16 suc h image s on the came ra. l Pictur es taken with an image qualit y of GOOD (one star) require the l east amount of memory . Y o u can store a max imum of approx imately 1 13 s uch images on the camera . number of images remaining in me mory

Either make room on th e CF memory card or turn th e camera off and repla ce the CF memory card. 6 T urn the d ial to select Ye s , a nd then pres s the dial.
Storing images in memory 43 The ima ges are copie d from internal memory to the CF memory card. Y our i mages are sti ll stored in internal memor y until yo u delete them. Formatting memory The inte rnal memory ins talled in your d igital camera is formatted at the fa ctory . Under ordin ary circumstance s, you do not need to format it . However , if the c amera does not store image s properly , you might wan t to try formatting the internal memory . CAUTION Format ting deletes everything st ored in memor y . Most CF memory cards ar e already fo rmatted when y ou buy them. However , if you b uy a CF memory c ard that has no t been formatted , you need to for mat it before you can store i mages on it.
