Camera dock insert If you purchase a dock, it will come wit h multiple clear insert s. When setting up an opt ional dock for use with this camera, use the dock insert with the square green t ag. See the dock User Guide for instructions. Before taking pictures Complete the following procedures before taking p ictures or recording video cli ps. Chapter 1 (continued) 6
Charge the batte ries Charge the batteri es using the charger that came with your camera. 1. Plug the charger in to an electrical outlet , then insert rechargeable NiM H batteries into the ch arger as shown. 2. The charger's indicator li ght blinks when the batteries are charging, the n turns on solid when char ging is complete (see Recharging NiMH batterie s on page 40 for information o n charging times). Batteries and the cha rger may get warm while the batteries are charging. Th is is normal. Although batt eries can be left in the cha rger without harm , we recommend you d o not store batteries i n the charger. See Managing batteries on page 38 f or information about sa fe handling and stor age of rechargeab le NiMH batteries. To fully activate you r new NiMH batteries, ch arge them overnight in the cha rger even if the charger indicat es that the batteri es are charged. Note You can also charge batte ries in the camera using an option al HP AC power adapter, or in the ex tra battery bay of an optiona l HP Photosmart pre mium camera dock. Install the batteries 1. Open the Battery/Me mory card door by sliding the latch as indicated on the Battery/Memory card door. 2. Insert the ba tteries. 3. Clos e the Battery/Memory card door. Note Turn the camera off before removing the batteries. If using rechargeable Ni MH batteries, fully charge the ba tteries before using them the first time (see Charge the batterie s on page 7 ). Turn on the came ra To turn on the camera, pre ss the button. Choose the la nguage Use to choose the la nguage you want, th en press . To change the language la ter, use t he Setup menu (see Using the Setu p Menu on page 31 ). HP Photosmart M627 Digital Camera 7
Set the region Along with the La nguage setti ng, the Region setting determin es the default date forma t and the format of the video signal f or displaying camera ima ges on a televisio n when connected through an opti onal HP Photosmart Premium dock or wireless dock base (see Using the Se tup Menu on page 31 ). Use to choose the region you wan t, then press . Set the date and time Accurately setting the date and time will help you locate images once you have transferred them to your comp uter, and will ensure that images are accuratel y marked if you use the date and ti me imprint feature. See Date & Time Imprint under Using the Capture Menu on page 17 . 1. Use to adjust the highlighted value. 2. Use to move to the ot her selections a nd repeat Step 1 until the da te and time are set correctly. 3. Press when the dat e, time, and format set tings are correct, th en press again to confirm. To chan ge the date and time later, use the Setup Menu (see Using the Set up Menu on page 31 ). Install an d format an optio nal memory car d This camera support s standard and high speed, HP-b randed Secure Digital (SD) memory card s, 8MB to 2GB. 1. Turn off the cam era and open the Battery/ Memory card door. 2. Insert the memory card in the smaller slot as sho wn. Make sure the memory card snaps into place. 3. Close the Battery/Memory card door and tu rn on the camera. Always format new memory cards before first use. Formatting rem oves all images from the memory card, so make sure to transfer existing images before f ormatting (see Tran sferring and printing images on page 25 ). 1. With the camera turned on, press until appears briefly in the upper righ t corner of the Ima ge Display. This in dicates you are in Playback . 2. Press . 3. Use to select Format Card , then press . 4. Use to select Yes , then press to format the card. Chapter 1 8
Note Once you install a memory card, all new images and video cli ps are stored on the card, rather th an in internal memory. To use i nternal memory and view images stored there, remove the m emory card. To t ransfer images from internal memory to an opt ional memory card, see Move Imag es to Card under Using the Design Ga llery Menu on page 22 . For information a bout supported memory cards, see Storage on pa ge 42 . Install the software The HP Phot osmart Software prov ides features for tra nsferring imag es and video clip s to your computer, as well as features fo r modifying stored images (rem ove red eyes, rotate, crop, resize, a djust image quality, and more). See About the H P Photosmart Software on page 9 . Note If you have trou ble installing or usin g the HP Photosmart Software, see the HP Customer Care w ebsite for more informat ion: www.hp.com/support . Windows If your Windows com puter: ● Has a minimum of 128MB of RAM, Wi ndows XP or x64, and Internet Explo rer 5.5 Service Pack 2 or higher (Inte rnet Explorer 6 is recommended), yo u have the optio n to instal l either HP Photosmart Pre mier or HP Photosmart Essentia l. ● Has a minimum of 128MB of RAM, Wi ndows 2000, and Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 or higher (Internet Explo rer 6 is recommended), HP Photosmart Essential is installed. 1. Close all program s and temporarily disa ble any virus protection software. 2. Insert the HP Photosmart Software CD into the CD drive and follow the on-scree n instructions. I f the installation scree n does not appear, cl ick Start , click Run , type D:\Setup.exe , w here D is the letter of your CD drive, the n click OK . 3. When the sof tware has fi nished installi ng, re-enable virus pro tection soft ware. Macintosh To install the HP Photosmart Mac so ftware , your Macintosh compu ter must meet the system requirements as stated on the cam era packaging. 1. Insert the HP Photosmart Softw are CD into the CD drive. 2. Double-click the C D icon on the computer d esktop. 3. Double-click the installer icon, t hen follow the on-screen instruct ions. About the HP Photosmart Software The CD that ca me with your camera contains th e following versions of H P Photosmart Software: ● HP Photosmart Premier Soft ware (for Windows XP and x64 systems with at least 128 MB of RAM). Thi s version of the softwar e includes some extra f eatures that le t you: – Process images tag ged as Favorites fo r printing. See Tagging images as Favorites o n page 29 . – Pause a vide o and print a frame from it. ● HP Photosmart Essential Software (for Win dows 2000, Windows XP, an d x64 systems with at least 128MB of RAM). This version does not have the extra features specified in HP Photosmart Premier Software. ● HP Photosmart Mac Software (for Macintosh systems). To learn more about the soft ware features a nd how to use t hem, see th e Help f eature in the HP Photos mart Software. 2 Taking pictures and recording video clips Live View allows you to frame pictures an d video clips in the Im age Display. To acti vate Live View , press until appears briefly in th e upper right corner of the Image Display. The Live View displa y looks like thi s: 1 Shooting mode indi cator. 2 Battery level indicator (see Power indicators on page 39 ). 3 Memory card indicator. 4 12 Pictures remaining count. 5 Focus brackets (see Auto focus and ex posure on page 12 ). Taking still pictures You can take a picture almost any time the camera is on, regardless of what is shown on the Image Disp lay. 1. Press until appears briefly in the u pper right corner of t he Image Displa y. This indicate s you are in Live View . 2. Frame the subje ct for your picture. 3. Press the Shutter button hal fway down to measure a nd lock the focus and exposure. Th e focus brackets in the Image Display tu rn solid green when focus is locked (see Auto focu s and ex posure on page 12 ). 4. Press the Shutter button a ll the way do wn to take the picture. 5. Recording video clips 1. Press until appears briefly in the u pper right corner of t he Image Displa y. This indicate s you are in Live View . 2. Frame the subj ect. 3. Press and release the Video butto n. 4. To stop re cording video, p ress and release the Video button agai n. Instant Review After you have taken a still image or recorded a video clip, the camera displays it brief ly in Inst ant Review . If you want to delet e the image or video clip, press , select This Image from the Delete sub-menu, then press . Note To hear audi o associated with still ima ges or video clip s, transfer the m to your computer using the HP Photosmart S oftware or use an opti onal HP Photosmart dock to conne ct the camera to a TV. Auto focus and exposure When you press the Shutter button half way down, the camera automatically measur es and locks the focus and exposur e. When you aut o focus: Indicator Description Green focus brackets Focus found. Red focus brackets Focus not found (see Optimizing foc us on page 13 ). (shaking hand icon) Long exposure re quired (see Optimizing exp osure on page 13 ). Tip If you f ollow the suggestions fo r focus and exposure and your i mage does not appear to be in proper focus or exposure wh en viewed in Pl ayback , see the topics on blurry, d ark, light, or grainy images in Troublesh ooting on page 32 . Focusing o n the subject When you press the Shutter bu tton halfway down , the camera searches for focus within the focus brackets. When it finds focu s, the focus brackets turn green. If the focus brackets do no t frame your subject, use Focus Lock (see Using Focus Lock o n page 13 ). Chapter 2 12
Optimizing focus When the camera canno t auto focus, the focu s brackets turn red. This indicates the picture may be out of focus becau se the subject is out of th e focus range or the scene has low co ntrast. If the camera is set to a shoo ting mode (see Using the sh ooting modes on page 1 5 ) other t han Macro and cannot focus, i t will still take the pi cture. Try releasing the Shutter button, re framing, and t hen pressing the Shutter bu tton halfway down ag ain. If the focus brackets are still red: ● Select a shooting mode more appropriat e for the scene you are capturing (se e Using the shootin g modes on page 15 ). ● If the scene has low cont rast, use Focus L ock (see Using Focus Lo ck on page 13 ) and aim at a point on the subject tha t has more colors or crisp edges. ● If the subject is too close (less t han 500 mm or 20 in), move farther aw ay from the subject or use Macro (see Macro under U sing the shooting mod es on page 15 ). If the camera is set to Macro and cannot focus, the camera will not ta ke the picture. Try one of the fo llowing: ● Move within the Macro range or set the ca mera to Auto (see Auto under Using the sh ooting modes on pa ge 15 ). ● In low contrast scenes, use Focus Lock (see Using Focus Lock on page 13 ). Using Focus Lo ck Use Focus Lock to focu s on a subject that is not in the center of the picture, to capture action shots more quickly by pre-focusing in the ar ea where the action will occur, or to focus in low ligh t or low contrast situat ions. 1. Frame the subject for your picture within the fo cus brackets. In l ow light or low contrast si tuations, frame a brighter or higher contrast object. 2. Press the Shutter button hal fway down. 3. Hold the Shutter button halfw ay down and re- frame. 4. Press the Shutter button all the way down to take the picture. Optimizi ng exposure When you press the Shutter b utton halfway down, t he camera also measures the ligh t level to set the p roper exposure. If the camera is set to a shooting mo de other than Fast Shot (see Fast Shot under Using the shootin g modes on page 15 ) and d etermines the scene will req uire a very long HP Photosmart M62 7 Digital Camera 13
exposure, a shaking ha nd icon ( ) appears. The ca mera will take the p icture, but it m ay be blurry because it is di fficult to hold the camera still for th e length of time requ ired. Try one of the f ollowing: ● Set the flash to Auto Flash or Flash On (se e Setting the flash on page 15 ). ● Set the came ra on a tripod or stable surface. ● Turn on more light. If the camera is set to Fas t Shot and determines there i s not enough light, the m essage NOT ENOUGH LIGHT FOR FAST SHOT appears in the Image D isplay and the camera will not take the picture. Try one of the following: ● Select a differ ent shooting mode (see Using the shoo ting modes on page 15 ). ● Turn on more light. Using zoom Your camera has both optical and digital zoom. Optical zo om physically extends the le ns to make the su bject of your p icture appear closer. After you have exte nded the lens f ully using optical zoom , the camera employs digita l zoom. Digital zoom uses no moving lens parts. Tip The more you zoom in on the subject of you r picture, the more small movements of the came ra are magnifie d (this is called camera shake). If appears when yo u press the Shutter button half way down, the pictur e may be blu rry. Be sure to hol d the camera still or a dd more light to the scene. Try holding the came ra closer to your body or against a st eady object, or set the camera on a tripod or sta ble surface. Optical zo om Optical zoo m moves the lens betw een wide angle (1 x) and telephoto (3 x). In Live Vi ew , use the buttons on th e Zoom lever to control zoom. Press to zoom in and to zoom out. Note You can set the optical zoom to the position you want just before record ing video clips. H owever, you cannot use optical zo om while the vi deo clip is recording. Digita l zoom In digital zoom, the Im age Display shows a yellow frame aro und the scene and the im age quality setting (MP value). As you zoom in, the scene expa nds to show what the camera will capture, and t he MP value decreases to indicate t he resolution at which the scene will be captured . When capturing images using digit al zoom, make sure that the MP value on the Im age Display is appropriate for th e size at which you want to print the capt ured image. For MP Chapter 2 14

In Live View , press on the Zo om lever to optically zoom to th e maximum level, then release the lever. 2. Press and hold until th e image you w ant to capture fills the yellow frame. If yo u zoom in too far, press . 3. To retu rn to optical zoom, p ress until digital zooming st ops. Release , then press it again. Note Digital zoom is not availabl e when recording vid eo clips. Setting the flash To select a flash setting, press , use to highli ght the desired flash mode, then press . Auto Flash (Default)—The camera uses the flash if ne cessary. Red-Eye —The ca mera uses the flash with red- eye reduction, if necessary, to minimize the possi bility of human eyes appe aring red in the fin al image. For informatio n about red-eye, see Flash Setting—Red-Eye on pag e 15 . Flash On —The cam era always uses flash. If the li ght is behind your subject, use this settin g to increase the li ght on the front of your sub ject. Flash Off —Th e camera does not use fla sh. Use this setti ng to capture poorly lit subjects beyond the fl ash range or to capture scenes wit h the existing light. The Flash setting remains in effect unt il it is change d again, or you tu rn off the camera. Note The flash is no t available in Burst , Fast Sho t , Landscape , or Su nset shooting modes, nor whil e recording vide o clips. In Nigh t Portrait shooting mode, the flash is set to Red-Eye . Flash Setting—Red-Eye The red-eye phen omenon is caused when li gh t from the flash reflec ts off the subjects' eyes, which ca n make human eyes appear red i n the captured imag e. Using Red- Eye causes the camera to flash quickly up to three times to shri nk the subject's pupils (reducing the effe ct of the red-eye phenomen on) before using t he main flash and capturing the imag e. Since it takes longer to t ake a picture using this setting, m ake sure your subjects wait for th e additional flash es. Using the shooting modes Shooting modes are pre defined settings for everyda y situations. They are optimized for particular type s of scenes or shooting situations. To select a shooting mo de, press while in Live View , use to highlig ht a shooting mode, then press . Auto Mode (Default)— For taking good shots quickl y, when you do n ot have time to select a special shooting mod e. Self-Timer —For capturing ima ges or recording video after a 10-second delay (see Using the Self-Timer mode on pag e 16 ). Fast Shot —For taking images more qu ickly than in Auto mode in bright ligh t conditions whe n the subject is a modera te to long dist ance away. Landscape —For scenes with deep perspecti ve, such as mo untain scenes. Portrait —For pictures tha t have one or more people as their primary subject. Action —For cap turing sporting events, moving cars, or any scen e where you want to stop t he action. Night Portrait —For capturing images of people at night. This mode uses t he flash and a long exposu re. As a result, you must set the cam era on a tripod or stable surface. Beach a nd Snow —For capturing scen es against bright backgrounds such as at the beach or in sno w. Sunset —Fo r capturing outd oor scenes at sunse t. Burst —For taking two or m ore sh ots quickly in succession (see Usin g the Burst mode on page 17 ). Macro —For taking close-u p pictures of subjects betw een 100 and 800 mm (3.9 to 31.5 in) away. Note The shooting mo des do not apply when yo u are recording video cli ps. The shooting mod e remains in effect unti l it is changed again, o r until you turn off the camera. Using the Self-Time r mode The Self-Timer a llows you to take an i mage or video clip 10 secon ds after pressing the Shutter or Video button. 1. Press while in Li ve View , use to highlig ht Self-Timer , then press . 2. Set the came ra on a tripod or stable surface. 3. Frame th e subject in the Image Displ ay. Chapter 2 16
4. The next steps d epend on whether yo u are taking a still pictu re or recording a vide o clip. a. For still pi ctures, press the Shutter butt on halfway down to lock focus and exposure. When the focus brackets turn green, p ress the Shutter button all the way down. b. For video clips, p ress the Video button, t hen release it. 5. The camera begi ns the 10-second countd own, then takes t he still image or begins recording the video clip. 6. If you are recordin g a video clip, press the Video button to stop reco rding. Tip If yo u want to include yourself in the picture, press th e Shutter button all th e way down, the n place the camera on a tripod or stable surface. Th e camera locks focus and exposure just b efore the end of the cou ntdown, allowing yo u time to place yourself in t he scene. Note To add aud io to images taken wi th the Self-Timer se tting, see Recording audio on pa ge 24 . The Self-Timer setting resets to the d efault Auto shooting mode after the picture or vi deo clip is taken. Using the Bur st mode Burst allows you to t ake two or more pictures as qu ickly as possible when you press and hold the Shutter button all th e way down. 1. Press while in Li ve View , use to highlig ht Bu rst , then press . 2. Frame the subject , then press the Shutter butt on halfway down to lo ck the focus and exposure. Then p ress the Shutter button all the w ay down and hold it. The camera takes pictures as quickly as possible until yo u release the Shutter button or the camera runs out of memory. The Image Displ ay remains off during the burst capture. Af ter the burst images have been taken, each image appears one at a ti me in Instan t Review (see Instant Review on page 12 ). You can delete th e entire burst sequ ence in Instant R eview . To delete individual images, see Delet ing images on pa ge 21 . Note To add audio to ima ges taken with the Burst setting, see Recordin g audio on page 24 . The Bur st sett ing remains in effect until it is cha n ged again, or un til it resets to the default Auto shooting mode when you turn off the camera. Using the Capture Menu The Capture Men u allows you to ad just camera sett ings that affect the characteristics of the images and video clips yo u capture. 1. While in Li ve View or Playbac k , press , then use to high light . 2. Use to highlight a menu option, then pr ess to display the menu option’s sub-menu. 3. Exposure C ompensation You can use Exposure Compensati on to override the camera's automatic exposure setting. Exposu re Compensation is useful in scenes that contain many light ob jects (like a white obje ct against a light background) or ma ny dark objects (like a black obje ct against a dark backg round). Such scenes could tu rn out gray without the use of Exposure Co mpensation . For a scene with many li ght objects, increase the Ex posure Compensation to a posit ive number. For a scene wit h many dark objects, decrease th e Exposure Com pensation . White Balance Different lighting conditions ca st different colors. This setting allows t he camera to compensate for t his, reproducing colors more accurat ely and ensuring t hat whites appear white in the f inal image. You can a lso adjust the whit e balance to produce crea tive effects. For example, the Sun setting produces a warmer look to the image. ISO speed This setting a djusts the sensitivit y of the camera to ligh t. When ISO Speed is set to the default Auto setting, the camera selects the best ISO speed for the scene. Lower ISO speeds ca pture images with t he least amount of g rain (or noise), but resul t in slower shutte r speeds. If taking a picture in low light conditions with out a flash at ISO 100 , use a t ripod. Higher ISO numbers a llow faster shut ter speeds, and can be used when taking pictures in dark areas wit hout a flash, or when taking pi ctures of fast mo ving objects. Highe r ISO speeds produce pi ctures with more grain (o r noise) and, therefo re, can be of lo wer quality. HP Photosmart M62 7 Digital Camera 19
3 Reviewing images and video clips You can review an d manipulate images and video cl ips in Playba ck as described here. This menu option only appears if you have images ta gged as Favori tes (see Tagging im ages as Favorites on pa ge 29 ). – All Images (in Memory/on Card) —Delet es all stored images an d video clips. – Format (M emory/Card) — Deletes all stored files, the n formats the intern al memory or memory card. Viewing thumbnails 1. From the Pla yback Menu , select View Thumbna ils . 2. Use and to scroll through the thumb nails. 3. Press to view the highlighted image on the Image Disp lay. Magnifying images This feature i s for viewing purposes only; it d oes not permanently al ter the image. 1. While in Playback , press (same as Zoom In on the Zoom lever). Rotate —Rotates image s in 90-degree increments. Use to rotate the i mage clockwise or co unter-clockwise in 90 -degree increments. Press to save the imag e in the new orien tation. Record Audio — See Recording au dio on page 24 . Move Images to Card —Moves images from intern al memory to a memory card. Availabl e only if there are i mages in internal memory and a memory card is inserte d. To move images, select this option and f ollow the on-screen pr ompts. Removing red eyes When you select Remove Red Eye s , the camera processes the current still image to remove red eyes from t he subjects. Note To prevent red e yes in images, see Fl ash Setting—Red-Eye on pa ge 15 . The red-eye removal proce ss takes a few se conds, after wh ich the image displays with green boxes around correct ed areas, along with the Remove Red Eyes sub-menu: ● Save Chang es (Defau lt)—Overwrites the origin al image and returns to the Design Gallery Men u . ● View Changes —Displays a magnif ied view of the im age with green boxes arou nd the corrected areas. ● Cancel —R eturns to the Desig n Gallery Menu without saving th e red eye changes. Remove Red Eyes is only ava ilable for still images ta ken with a flash. 22
Applying artistic effects Tip If you plan t o apply artist ic effects or modi fy colors, do so be fore adding a border. Apply Artis tic Effects allows you to create a copy of a select ed image and apply creative effects to the copy . To apply artistic effect s: 1. Use to select Apply Artistic Effects , then press . 2. Use to select an option a nd preview the eff ect it has on the image. – Cancel —Returns to the Design G allery Menu witho ut saving changes. – Posterize —Creates a high-contras t, flat-toned effect. – Soft Glow —Adds a diffuse, brig ht ethere al glow. – Slimming —Compresses obje cts in the center of an image for a slim ming effect. – Kaleidoscope —Mirrors the image in four directions. 3. Press to select the a rtistic effect and di splay the creative sub-m enu. Follow the on -camera instruction s to adjust the effect. 4. Press to save a copy of the image with the artis tic effect and return to the Design Gallery Men u . Press to exit without saving and return to the Appl y Artistic Effects sub-menu. Modifying colors Tip If you plan to apply artistic effects o r modify colors, do so before addi ng a border. Modify Color allows you t o apply color schemes to th e displayed image. To modify colors: 1. Use to select Modify Color , then press . 2. Use to select a color scheme and preview the effect it has on the image. – Cancel —Returns to the Design Gallery Menu without saving changes. – Black and Wh ite —Converts co lor images to black and wh ite. – Sepia —Converts image t o a brownish to ne to look old-fash ioned. – B&W Tints —Applies color t ones on a black and white versi on of an image. 3. Press to select the col or scheme and display the Creative sub-menu. Follow the on -camera instruction s to adjust t he color. 4. Press to save a copy of the image with the specified color scheme a nd return to the Design G allery Menu . Press to exit without saving and re turn to the Modify Color sub-menu. Press to select the border and d isplay the Cr eative sub-menu. Follow the on-camera instruction s to adjust t he border. 4. Press to save a copy of the image w ith the specified bo rder and return to t he Design Gallery Menu . Press to exit without saving and return to the Add Borders sub-menu. Recording audio Record A udio allows you to record a n audio clip and attach it to an existing image . 1. Select Record Audio to immediately start recording. 2. To stop re cording and attach the a udio clip to the displ ayed image, press . 3. To hear audio associa ted with still images or vid eo clips, transfer them to your computer using t he HP Photosmart Soft ware or use an optional H P Photosmart dock to connect th e camera to a TV. If the currentl y displayed image already has an audio clip attached to it, t he Record Audio sub-menu disp l ays instead when you select Record Audio. ● Keep Curren t Clip —Retai ns the current audio clip and returns to the Design Gallery Men u . ● Record New Clip —Records a new audio clip, repl acing the previous a udio clip. ● Delete C lip —Del etes the current audio clip and returns to the D esign Gallery Menu . 5 Transferring and printing images You can transfer images and vide o clips with or w ithout the HP Photosmart Softw are that came with you r camera. However, the HP Photosmart Software has se veral features f or transferring and man aging your images and also guides you thro ugh the transfer process. Transferring images with HP Photosmart Software If you have in stalled the HP Photo smart Software (see Install the software on page 9 ), use this method to transfer images and video clips to your compute r. Tip You can also perform th is task using an optional HP Photosmart do ck (see the dock User Gu ide). 1. If you have selected i mages for sharing or printing (se e Using HP Photosmart Express on page 28 ), verify that the computer is co nnected to a printer and/o r the Internet. 2. Connect the camera and computer usin g the USB cable th at came wi th your camera. 3. Turn on the camera and follow the inst ructions on the computer screen to transfer the imag es. For more informat ion, see the Help feature i n the HP Photosmart Software. Transferring images without HP Photosmart Softwar e If you do not install the HP Photo smart Software: ● You cannot us e the Share feat ures or Buy Prints Onlin e on t he camera's Photosma rt Express Men u (see Usin g HP Photosmart Express o n page 28 ). ● Images marked for p rinting do not auto matically print when the camera is conn ected to the computer. However, you can still transfer images and vide o clips to your computer by: ● Connecting your cam era directly to the computer (see C onnecting to the com puter on page 26 ) ● Using a memory card re ader (see Using a memo ry card reader on page 26 ) HP Photosmart M62 7 Digital Camera 25
Connecting to the comp uter 1. Turn off the came ra, connect the camera an d computer using the USB cabl e that came wit h your camera, t hen turn on the ca mera. – On Window s computers, the camera appears as a device i n Explorer, allowing you to copy images from th e camera to the computer. – On Macintosh computers, either Image Capt ure or iPhoto starts automatically, allowing yo u to transfer images to the computer. 2. When you have fi nished transferring im ages, disconnect the camera from the computer. I f your computer is running Windo ws 2000 or XP and you get a n Unsafe Removal warning, disregard th e warning. If you encounter prob le ms, set the camera’s USB Configura tion to Disk Drive (see USB Configuration un der Using the Setup Men u on page 31 ) and reconnect to your computer. Note On Macintosh comput ers, if you set the camera to Disk Drive and neither Image Capture nor iPho to starts automatical ly, look on the desktop for a di sk drive icon with th e label HP_M627 and copy the images manu ally. For more informat ion about how to copy fi les, visit Mac help. Using a memo ry card reader You can put your ca mera’s optional memory card into a (separ ately purchased) memory card reader. Some comput ers and HP Photos mart printers have built-in me mory card slots which act as a m emory card reader. For Windows computers: 1. Insert your camera’s memo ry ca rd into the memor y card reader (o r into your computer’s memory card slot). 2. Right-click My Computer on your deskt op, then select Explore . 3. Expand the removab le drive folder, expand the DCIM folder, t hen click on th e folder for your camera. 4. Select and copy all th e images to a folder on your computer. 5. After verifying that the images were successfully t ransferred, return the m emory card to your camera. For Macintosh computers: 1. Insert your camera’s memo ry ca rd into the memor y card reader (o r into your computer’s memory card slot). 2. Either the HP Phot osmart Software, Image Capture, or iPhoto start s automatically and guides you t hrough the process of tran sferring images. If no applicat ion starts automat ically or if you want to copy the images man ually, look on the desktop for t he disk drive icon for the memory card, t hen copy the images to your local hard drive. For more information about how to copy files, visi t Mac help. Printing images from the camera You can connect the camera to any PictBridge- certified printer to print still images. 1. Check that th e printer is turned on, there is paper in the pr inter, and Chapter 5 26
there are no print er error messages. 2. Verify that the camera 's USB Configuration is se t to Digital Camera (see USB Config uration under Using the Set up Menu on page 31 ). 3. Connect the ca mera and printer using the USB cable that came with your cam era, then turn on the camera. 4. When the camera is conn ected to the printer, the Print Setup Menu displays on the camera. To chan ge the settings, use on the camera to select a menu option, t hen use on the camera to cha nge the setting. 5. Press to begin p rinting. Note If you connect th e camera to a non- HP printer and encou nter problems with prin ting, contact your p rinter manufacturer. HP does not provide customer support for non-HP printers. 6 Using HP Photosmart Express With HP Photos mart Express , you can tag images as Favo rites (see Tagging images as Favorites on page 29 ), select still images in your cam era to print automa tically (see Selecting imag es for printing on page 2 9 ), or buy prints onli ne (see Buying pri nts online on pa ge 30 ). You can also customize the Photosmart Express Menu to include e-mai l addresses, group distribut ion lists, online albu ms, or other online se rvices that you specify. To customize the Ph otosmart Express Menu : 1. Set up your cu stom destinatio ns on your camera (see Setting up onli ne destinations in the camera on page 28 ). 2. Select ima ges in your came ra to send to onli ne destinations (see Sending im ages to online de stinations on page 29 ). To buy prints of t he images you selected , verify that the computer is connected to the Internet, then connect the camera to yo ur computer and turn on the camera. 7 Using the Setup Menu The Setup Menu allows you to set preference s for the camera’s behavior. 1. While in Li ve View or Playbac k , press , then use to high light . 2. Settings you sp ecify remain until you cha nge them. Display Brightness —Adjusts t he brightness of the Image Display. ● Low —For extend ing battery life. ● Medium (Default)—For normal viewing cond itions. ● High —For very bright lighting conditions. Camera Sounds —Tu rns the camera sounds (such as button presses and shutter clicks) off a nd on. On (Defaul t), Off . Date & Time —Sets the date and tim e. See Set the date and time on page 8 . USB Configuration —Specif ies how a computer recognizes t he camera. See Connecting to the computer on page 26 . ● Digital Camera (Default)—Recognizes the camera as a digital camera using PTP (Pic ture Transfer Protocol). ● Disk Drive —Recognizes the camera as a disk drive using MSDC (Mass Storage Device Class). TV Config uration —Sets the video signal format for displaying camera images on a TV. ● NTSC —Used primarily in North America, parts of South Amer ica, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. ● PAL —Used primarily in Europe, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, and parts of Asia. 8 Troubleshooting Use this section to find inform ation on: ● Resettin g the camera (see Resetting the came ra on page 32 ) ● Possible pr oblems and solutions (see Problems and solutions on page 32 ) Resetting the camera If your camera does n ot respond when you press but tons, reset the camera. 1. Turn off th e camera. 2. Remove the memory card an d batteries, and disconnect the camera from AC power for at least 5 seconds. 3. Reinsert the bat teries and close th e Battery/Memory card door. 4. After verifying that the camera works w ithout an optional memory card, reinsert th e memory card (if yo u were using one). When the camera is reset , any images or video clips stored in mem ory are retained. Problems and solutions Use this informa tion to find solutions to common issues you may have using your ca mera. The camera does not turn o n. ● Install new or recharged batteries, ensuring that the batteries are inserted correctly (see Install the batteries on pa ge 7 ). If you are usi ng rechargeable batte ries, ensure they are rechargeab le Nickel Metal H ydride (NiMH) b atteries. ● Ensure that the o ptional HP AC power adapter is connected to the camera (directly or through an optional dock) and is p lugged into a working electrical outlet, and t hat the HP AC power ada pter is not damaged or defecti ve. ● Reset the camera (see Reset ting the camera on page 32 ). ● Ensure that the mem ory card is the proper type (see Storage on page 42 ). If so, remove the memory card and turn on the camera; if the ca mera turns on, format the memory card (see Install and format an optional memory card on page 8 ). If the camera still does not t urn on, format the memory card using a memory card reader, or replace the memory card. I have to recha rge the Ni MH batteries freque ntly. ● See Extending bat tery life on page 38 . ● New batterie s or batteries that have not been charged recently must be recha rged to reach full capacity. ● If you have not used the b atteries for two months or longe r, recharge them. The NiMH batteries will not char ge. ● Try charging the batt eries again after th ey have drained awhil e. ● If charging the ba tteries in the charger t hat came with your cam era or the spare battery charging bay of an optional HP P hotosmart do ck does not work, replace the batteries. ● Use only the ap proved optional HP AC power adapt er. 32
The camera does not tu rn on when I connect to AC p ower, then disconnec t, then reconnect. ● Insert batteries into the camera. ● The optional H P AC power adapter cou ld be malfunctioning. Try connecting to a different com patible HP AC power adapter. ● Try plugging the o ptional HP AC power adap ter into a different electrical outlet. ● Reset the camera (see Reset ting the camera on page 32 ). It takes the camera a long tim e to turn on. Having a large nu mber of files (over 300) st ored on an optional m emory card affects the time it takes for the camera to turn on. T ransfer stored files to yo ur computer, then format the memory card. The camera does not re spond when I press a bu tton. ● Turn on the camera . ● Most of the camera bu ttons do not respond whe n the camera is conn ected to a computer (directl y or through an opt ional dock). ● Replace or recharge the ba tteries. ● Reset the camera (see Reset ting the camera on page 32 ). ● The memory card may be def ective. Remove the m emory card and test th e camera; if the ca mera works, replace the memory card. ● Format the interna l memory an d/or the memory card (see Install and format an optional memory card on pag e 8 ). The camera does not take a pic ture when I press the Shutter butto n. ● Press the Shutter button all th e way down. ● The memory card or internal memory may be full . Transfer images from the camera to your computer, then format the internal memory or t he memory card (see Install and format an optional memory ca rd on page 8 ). Or repla ce the card with a new one. ● The camera may be processi ng. Wait a few seconds for the came ra to finish processing the la st image before taking another pi cture. The Image Display is n ot working. ● The Image Display may have timed out. Press any camera but ton to wake up the camera. ● Replace or recharge t he batteries. If the I mage Display does not turn on, rem ove the batterie s and connect to AC power (directly or throug h the optional dock). If the Image Display st ill does not turn on, reset th e camera (see Resetting the camera on page 32 ). My image is blurry. ● Use Focus Lock (se e Using Focus Lock on page 13 ). ● Use a tripo d to hold the camera stead y, or improve lightin g conditions. ● Set the flash to Auto Fl ash or Flash On and set the shootin g mode to Action . My image is too bri ght. ● Turn the flas h off (see Set ting the flash on page 15 ). ● Move back from the su bject and use zoom. ● Adjust Exposure Compens ation (see Exposu re Compensati on under Using the Capture Menu on page 17 ). My image is too dark. ● Wait for natu ral lighting conditi ons to improve, use the flash (see Settin g the flash on page 15 ), or add indirect ligh ting. ● Adjust Exposure Compens ation (see Exposu re Compensati on under Using the Capture Menu on page 17 ). ● If the subject you are trying to capt ure is outside the flash rang e (see Flash working distance under Specif ications on pa ge 42 ), turn off the flash. This causes a longer exposure t ime, so use a tripod or hold the camera steady. My image is grainy. ● Use a lower ISO S peed setting (see ISO Speed under Using the Capture Menu on page 17 ). ● Add indirect light ing, use the flash (see Setting the flash on pa ge 15 ), or wait for natural li ghting conditions to impro ve. ● You may have zoomed in too far using digital zo om (see Digital zoo m on page 14 ). ● If the camera is warm, the eff ect will diminish as the camera co ols. For best image quality, avoi d storing the camera in ve ry hot locations. Images are mi ssing on my camer a. Remove the memory ca rd and see if the images are store d in internal memory. The Power li ght is on but the Ima ge Display is off, or the camera seems stuck and won't op erate. ● Press Live View/ Playback to reacti vate the Image Display. ● Reset the camera (see Reset ting the camera on page 32 ). The camera responds sluggi shly when trying to revi ew images. See Storage on page 42 and Memory capacity on page 43 for tips about memory cards. Video recordin g terminates abruptly . The video is saved s uccessfully, but it is shorter than expected. Replace your memory ca rd with a faster card. Look for cards marked High Perform ance, Pro, Ultra, or Hig h Speed. Video recordin g terminates abruptly a nd the video will no t play back. Reformat the card (see Inst all and format an op tional memory card on page 8 ). The ca mera gets warm (o r even hot) to the touch. This is normal. However, i f anything seems out of the ord inary, turn off the camera , remove it from AC po wer (if connected), and allo w the camera to cool. Then exam ine the camera and t he batteries for signs of p ossible damage. Chapter 8 34
For best image qualit y, turn off the camera whe n not using. Always store the cam era in a cool place. My camer a stalls when esta blishing a connectio n to the computer. ● Ensure that the USB cabl e is properly connected t o the camera and comput er. ● Try connecting the U SB cable to another USB port on the computer. ● Turn the camera off, then on again. If that does not fix th e problem, reset the camera (see Resetting the camera on page 32 ). ● If the problem p ersists, contact HP Support (see Prod uct support on page 3 6 ). I cannot tr ansfer images from th e camera to my comp uter. ● Either instal l the HP Photosmart Software (see Install the software on page 9 ), or see Transferring i mages without HP Pho tosmart Software on page 25 . ● Set your came ra to act as a Disk Drive (see C onnecting to the com puter on page 26 ). I get an erro r message when transfe rring images to my computer. A power surge or ele ctrostatic discharge may ha ve affected the ca mera. Close th e HP Photosmart Transfer Software, remove t he camera from the option al dock or disconnect the camera fro m the USB cable and reset the camera (see Resetting th e camera on page 32 ). Then, restart the image transfer process (see Transferring i mages with HP Ph otosmart Software on pa ge 25 ). A Managing batteries Your camera uses two AA batteries, either Alka line, Photo Lithium, or rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH). Alkaline batteries provide far le ss battery life than either Photo Lithium or NiMH batteries. Top points about batteries ● Fully charge NiMH batteries overnight before using them for t he first time. ● The first several times you recharge NiMH batter i es, they may not provide the number of shots per charge that you expect. Their performance will improve after t he batteries have been charged, then discharged completely four or fi ve times. You can use the camera normally to discharge the batteries during this conditioning period. ● Always insert the batteries in the camera correctly (see Install the batteries on page 7). If the batteries are inserted improp erly, the compartment door may close but the camera will not operate. ● If you do not intend to use your camera for more than two months, remove the batteries unless you are using rechargeable batteries and ar e leaving the camera connected to an optional dock or HP AC power adapter. ● The performance of all batter ies will decrease as the temperature drops. To improve battery performance, keep the camera or batteries stored in a warm inside p ocket when in a cold environment. Extending battery life To conserve battery power, the Image Display tu rns off after a period of inactivity. Pressing any button wakes up the camera. After five minutes of inactivity, the camera turns off. To further extend battery life: ● Set Display B rightn ess to Low (see Display Brightness unde r Using the Setup Menu on page 31 ). ● Set yo ur camera to Auto Flash (see Auto Flash under Setting the flash on page 15 ). ● Use optical zoom sp aringly. ● If you are turning on the camera only to view images, hold down while turning on the camera to start in Playback without extending the lens. ● Co nnect the camera to the optional HP AC power adapter when you transfer or print. Safety precautions for using b atteries ● Always use two iden t ical batteries of the same chemistry, brand, and age. ● Do not place batteries in fire or heat them. Always store charged batteries in a cool location . ● Do not connect the positive and negative terminals of the battery to each other with any metal object. ● Do not carry or store batteries with metal objects. Do not d rop batteries into a change-filled pocket. ● Do not pierce batteries or sub ject them to strong impacts or shocks. ● Do not solder directly onto batteries. ● Do not allow batteries to get we t. ● Do not disassemble or modify batter i es. 38
● Immediately discontinue use of a ba ttery if, while using, charging, or storing the battery, the battery emits an unusual smell, feels excessively hot (note that it is normal for t he ba t tery to feel warm), changes color or shape , or appears abnormal in any other way. ● In the e v ent batteries leak and the fluid gets into on e’s eye, do not rub the eye. R inse well with water and immediately seek medical care. If le ft untreated, the batter y fluid could cause damage to the eye. Caution Risk of explosion if battery is replac ed by an incorrect type. Dispose of used batteries according to the instructions. Power indica tors When the batteries are low or the camera is connected to AC p ower, one of the following icons appears in the Image Display. If no battery icon appears in Live View or Playback , the batteries have sufficient power to function normally. Icon Description Battery level is low. Camera will soon po wer down. Blinking Battery is depleted. Camera will power down. Camera is operating on AC p ower. Animated battery filling up Camera is operating on AC power and is charg ing the battery. Camera has successfully completed battery cha rging and is operating on AC power. Note If the camera is without batteries for a prolo nged period, the clock may be reset and you may be prompted to update it the next time yo u power on the camera. Number of shots per battery type The following table show s the minimum, maxi mum, and average number of shots that may be obtained using Alkaline, Photo Lith ium, and rechargeable NiMH batteries. For Minimum, Maximum, and Average numbers, four pi ctures are taken per session with at least a 5 minute break between sessions. In addition: ● The minimum number of shots is obtained with extensive use of Live View (30 seconds per picture), Playback (15 seconds per picture), and Flash On . Op t ical zoo m (both directions) is used on 75% of the shots. ● The maximum num ber of shots is obtained wi t h minimal use of Live View (10 seconds per picture) and Playback (4 secon ds per picture).
