Save any data on the memo ry card that you want to keep, then format the memory card (see â Install and f ormat an optional mem ory cardâ on page 6 ). ⢠If your memory ca rds are 4GB or larger, th e card that st ores fewer images m ay have been improper ly formatted by a device t hat does not support 4GB or larger cards. A new type o f High Ca pacity Secu re Digita l (marke d SDHC) memory ca rd is no w available that prevents improper format ting and use by devices not suppor ting 4GB or larger cards. Try formatting the card in this camera, which supports High Capacity Secure Digi tal cards. ⢠Your memory card may be defective. If you have formatted your memory card in the camera and it does not show the expe cted capacity, consider replacin g the memory card. My camera indi cates I can store 2000 im ages regardles s of the Image Quali ty setting. When you turn on your came ra with a memory card in stalled, the ca mera indicates the number of images yo u can store on the memory card at the current Image Quality setting. T his came ra supports sto ring a maximu m of 2000 im ages on a memory ca rd. It takes a l ong time to âD elete Allâ i mages from m y memory c ard. Having a la rge numbe r of images sto red on a memory card i ncreases the time the ca mera takes to delete them. Instead of deleting them, format the memory card (see â Install and format an option al memory cardâ on page 6 ). The Power li ght is on but the Imag e Display is off, or the camer a seems stu ck and won't op erate. â¢S l i d e to a differen t position or press any camera bu tton to reactivate t he Image D isplay. ⢠Reset the camera (see â Resetting t he cameraâ on page 32 ). The camera responds sluggi shly when tryin g to review image s. ⢠Power-on time in Playback is slow if you have a large number of tagged ima ges on your memory card. Transfer the imag es to your comput er (see â Transferring an d printing imagesâ on page 23 ) an d review them there. â¢S e e â Storageâ on p age 42 and â Memory capa cityâ on page 43 for tips about memory cards. Video recordin g terminates abru ptly. The video is saved successful ly, but it is shorter than expected. Replace your memory card with a faster card. Look for cards marked High Performance, Pro, Ultra, or Hig h Speed. I have two memory cards that are the same size, but one store s many more pictures than the other. 35
Video recordi ng terminates abru ptly and the video will not play back. ⢠Remove the memory card and see if t he video is stored in inte rnal memory. If so, transfer the vi deo to a memory card (see Move Images to C ard under â Using the Playback Menu â on page 18 ) or to your c omputer (see â Transferring an d printing images â on page 23 ). ⢠If the video is stored on a me mory card, transfer the video to your computer (see â Transferring and p rinting image sâ on page 23 ), then reformat the card (s ee â Insta ll and format an optional mem ory cardâ on page 6 ). The camera ge ts warm (or even hot) to the touch. This is normal. H owever, if an ything see ms out o f the ord inary, turn off the cam era an d allow the camera to cool. Th en examine the camera and the batteries for signs of p ossible damage. For best image quali ty, turn off the camera when n ot using. Always store the ca mera in a cool pl ace. My camera stalls w hen establishing a connection to the compu ter. ⢠Your memory card may have a large number of image s stored on it. The more image s you have on your card, the longer it takes t o establish a connection to the computer (up to 5 minutes). If you have a large number o f images on the memory card , be sure to all ow this additio nal ti me to est ablish the conn ection . ⢠Ensure that the USB cab le is properly connected to t he camera and comput er. ⢠Try connecting t he USB cable to another U SB port on the computer. ⢠Turn the camera o ff, then on again . If that do es not fix the prob lem, reset t he camera (see â Resettin g the cameraâ on p age 32 ). ⢠If the problem persists, con tact HP Support (see â Product sup portâ on page 38 ). I cannot transfer i mages from the cam era to my comput er. ⢠Either install th e HP Photosmart Software (see â Install the soft wareâ on page 6 ), or see â Transferring images w ithout HP Photosmart Sof twareâ on page 24 . ⢠Configu re your came ra preferen ces so the HP Ph otosmart software starts automaticall y when you connect your came ra to your Macintosh. Ope n the HP Photosmart Camera settings in System Preferences to make changes, or t o view the camera so ftware help. ⢠Set your camera to act as a Disk Driv e (see USB Configuration in â Using the Camera Setu p Menuâ on page 31 ), then follow the ste ps in â Connecting to the computerâ o n page 24 . I get an error m essage when trans ferring images to my computer. A power surge or electrost atic discharge may have affected the camera. Close t he HP Photosmart Software, disconnect the ca mera from the comput er, and reset the camera (see â Resetting the cam eraâ on page 32 ). Then, rest art the image transfe r process (see â Transferring images w ith HP Photosm art Softwareâ on page 23 ). Chapter 9 36 Troubleshooting
The HP Photosmart Software does not start automatica lly when I connect to my Macintosh. Configure your camera preference s so the HP Photosma rt software starts au tomatically when you connect your camera to your Macintosh. Open t he HP Photosmart Camera settings in Syste m Preferences to make changes, or to vi ew the ca mera software help. The HP Photos mart Software ta kes a long time before it is read y to transfer im ages from my ca mera. Having a large numbe r of files stored on an optional mem ory card affects the amount of time it takes for the HP Ph otosmart Software to start transferring imag es. Transfer all images stored on the memory card , then format the ca rd (see â Install and fo rmat an optional memo ry cardâ on page 6 ). My camera sh uts down unexpec tedly. ⢠A power surge or electros tatic discharge may ha ve affected th e camera. Remove the battery and reset the camera (see â Resett ing the cameraâ on page 32 ). Then reinstall the battery a nd turn on the camera. ⢠Recharge the ba tteries. ⢠Repla ce the battery. A Managing batteries Your camera uses two AA batteries, either Alka line, Photo Lithium, or rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH). Ph oto Lithium and NiMH batteries pro vide longer battery life than Alkaline batteries. Top points about batteries ⢠The batteries shipped with your ca mera are AA Alkaline. These batteries have a short life an d are intended to le t you begin using your camera immediately. When the camera warns that the battery charge is low (see â Power indicatorsâ on page 40 ), HP recomme nds replacing them with Photo Lithium or rechargeable Ni MH batteries for longer battery life. ⢠Fully charge NiMH batteries before using them for the first time. ⢠The first several times you recharge NiMH batter ies, they may not provide the number of shots per charge that you expect. Their performance w ill improve after the batteries have been charged, then discharged completely four or five times. You can use the camera normally to discharge the batteries during this conditioning period. ⢠Always insert the batterie s in the camera co rrectly (see â Install the batteriesâ on page 4 ). If the batteries are inserted improp erly, the compartment door may close but the camera will not operate. ⢠If you do not intend to use your camera for more than one mo nth, remove the batteries from the camera. ⢠The performance of all batteri es will decreas e as the temperature drops. To improve battery performance, store the camera and batteries in a warm inside pocket wh en in a cold environment. To prevent short-circ uiting the batteries, never car ry small metal items such as keys or coins in the same pocket with your batteries. Extending battery life To conserve battery power, the Image Display tu rns off after a period of inactivity. Pressing any button wakes up the camera. After five minutes of inactivity, the camera turns off. To further extend battery life: ⢠Set Display Brightness to Low (see Display Brightness unde r â Using the Camera Setup Menuâ on page 31 ). ⢠Set your camera to Auto Fl ash (see Auto Flash under â Setting the flashâ on page 13 ). ⢠Use optical zoom sparingly. ⢠Use video recordin g sparingly. ⢠Use Image Display sparingly. ⢠If you are turning on the ca mera only to view images, slide to , then turn on the camera to start in Playback without extending the lens. Safety precautions for using b atteries ⢠Always use two identical batteries of the same chemistry, brand, and age. ⢠Do not place batteries in fire or heat them. Al ways store char ged batteries in a cool loca tion. ⢠Do n ot connect the positive and negative ter minals of the battery to each other with any metal object. ⢠Do not carry or store batteries with metal objects. Do not drop batteries into a ch ange-filled pocket. ⢠Do not p ierce batteries or subject them to strong impacts or shocks. ⢠Do not solder directly onto batteries. ⢠Do not allow batteries to get wet. ⢠Do not disassemble or modify batteries. Managing batteries 39
⢠Immediately discontinu e use of a battery if, while using, charging, or storing the battery, the battery emits an unusual smell, feels excessive ly hot (note that it is normal for the battery to feel warm), changes color or shape, or appears abnormal in any othe r way. ⢠In the event batteries lea k and the fluid gets in to oneâs eye, do not rub the eye. Rinse well with water and immediately seek medical care. If left untreated, the battery fluid could cause damage to the eye. CAUTION: Risk of explosion if batte ry is replaced by an inco rrect type. Dispose of used batteries according to the instructions. Power indicators When the batteries are low, one of the follo wing icons appears in the Image Display. If no batter y icon appears in the Image Display, the batteries have sufficient power to functio n normally. Icon Description Battery level i s low. Camera will soon power down. Blinking Battery is depleted. Camera will power down. NOTE: If the camera is without batteries for a prolonged period, the clock may be reset and you may be prompted to update it the n ext time you pow er on the camera. Battery performance This graph shows the relative number of photos you can take using Photo Lithium, N iMH, and Alkaline batteries. Actual performance may vary based on usage , battery type, and battery manufacturer. Many additional factors affect the number o f photos you can take (see â Top points about batteriesâ on page 39 ). NOTE: For more information about batteries, go to www.hp.com/support and search on the code AA-400 . The following table shows how Alkaline, Photo Lith iu m, and rechargeable NiMH batter ies perform in different types of use scenarios: Type of Use Alkaline Photo Lithium NiMH Most economical if you take more than 30 pictures per month Poo r Fair Good Most economical if you take fewer than 30 p ictures per month Fair Good Fair Appendix A 40 Managing batteries
