1 TouchPad The fo llowin g illus tratio n and table desc ribe the com put er Tou chPad. Component Description (1) TouchPad light Blue: TouchPad is enabled. Amber: TouchPad is disabled. (2) TouchPad* Moves the pointer and selects or activates items on the screen. (3) TouchPad horizontal scroll zone* Allows you to scroll left or right. (4) Left TouchPad button* Functions like the left button on an external mouse. (5) Right TouchPad button* Functions like the right button on an external mouse. (6) TouchPad vertical scroll zone* Allows you to scroll up or down. (7) TouchPad on/off button Enables/disables the TouchPad . *This table describes factory settings. Using the Touc hPad To mov e the point er, sl ide y our finger acros s the Tou chPad su rface in the d irectio n you want the pointer to go. Us e the left a nd right TouchP ad butto ns as y ou wou ld the c orrespo nding buttons on an ex ternal mouse. T o scroll up and do wn using the Touc hPad vert ical sc roll zone, sli de your fin ger up or down over the ver tical white l ine. To s croll left and right using the Touc hPad ho rizo ntal scr oll zone, slide your finger left or right over t he horizont al white li ne. NOTE If you are using the TouchP ad to move the pointer , you must lift you r finger off the TouchPad before m oving i t to the scrol l zone. S imply sli ding your fin ger fro m the TouchP ad to the scroll zo ne will not activate the scroll ing function . Connecti ng an extern al mo use You can c onnect an external USB mou se to the comp uter us ing one of the USB po rts on the compu ter. A USB mouse can als o be connec ted to the syst em usin g the ports on an op tional expan sion product. Setting Touch Pad prefer ences Mouse properti es in Micros oft® W indow s® al lows you t o cus tomize settin gs fo r po inting devi ces, includ ing ● TouchPad t apping, whic h enabl es you to tap the Touc hPad once to s elect an ob ject or twice to double -click an object (fa ctory ena bled) . ● Edge moti on, whi ch enabl es you to con tinue t o scroll even t hough y our fin ger has reache d the edge of the Tou chPad ( factory enab led). ● Button preferen ce, wh ich a llows you t o swi tch be tween left-h and an d ri ght-ha nd us e (rig ht-han d preferen ce is factor y enabl ed). Hotkeys Hotkey s are comb inatio ns of the fn key (1) and either the es c key (2) or one of the fu nction k eys (3 ) . The i cons on t he f1 through f12 keys rep resent the hotkey fu nctions. To per for m this fun cti on Press Play the previous track or section on an audio CD or a DVD. fn f1 1 Play the next track or section on an audio CD or a DVD. fn f1 2 Using hotkeys To use a hotke y command on the co mputer keyboard, either ● Briefly pres s the fn key, and th en br iefly press the se cond key of th e hotk ey comm and. – or – ● Press a nd hol d down the fn ke y, briefly press the seco nd key of the hotk ey comm and, and then relea se both keys at the sa me time. In the Win dows fn esc d isplay, the ver sion of the sys tem BIOS (basi c input-o utput sy stem) is displ ayed as the BIO S date. On so me co mputer mode ls, t he BIOS date is disp layed in d ecima l format . The BIOS date is some times called the sys tem ROM ve rsion num ber. Open the Help and Support Center (fn f1) Pres s fn f1 to ope n the Help a nd Sup port Cente r. In addi tion to pr oviding infor mation about your W indows operati ng syst em, the He lp and Support Center prov ides ● Informatio n abou t your com puter, such as mode l and serial n umber , instal led s oftware, hardwa re compo nents, an d specifi cation s. ● Answers to question s about usi ng your com puter . ● Tutorials to hel p you le arn to use the comp uter a nd Wi ndows fe atures. ● Updates for the Wi ndows o perating s ystem, dr ivers, and the so ftware prov ided on your compu ter. ● Checkups f or computer functiona lity. ● Automa ted and intera ctive troublesh ooting, repa ir soluti ons, and sys tem recov ery proced ures. ● Links to HP support spec ialists. Until y ou have set up your I nternet or netwo rk ser vices, the fn f3 ho tkey opens the Wind ows In ternet Conn ection Wizar d. After you ha ve s et up you r Inter net o r network serv ices and your Web browser h ome pa ge, yo u can pres s fn f3 to qu ickly acce ss your home page and the Inter net. Swi tch th e s creen i mag e ( fn f 4) Press fn f4 to swi tch the sc reen im age amo ng display devices c onnec ted to the syste m. For exa mple, if a mo nitor is c onnected to the compu ter, ea ch ti me yo u press fn f4 the im age sw itches among the compute r display , the monitor display, and a simultan eous dis play on bot h the compu ter and the monitor . Most exte rnal mon itors receive vi deo informa tion from the compute r using the ex ternal VG A video standar d. The fn f4 hotke y can also altern ate im ages a mong o ther d evice s rec eivi ng video i nforma tion from th e com puter, such as S-Vide o devic es. The follo wing video tr ansmiss ion types, with examples of dev ices that use the m, are suppo rted by the fn f4 hotkey : ● LCD (c ompute r disp lay ) ● External VGA (most ex ternal moni tors) ● S-Video (tele visions, c amco rders, V CRs, and v ideo c apture car ds with S -Video- in jacks , on se lect models ) ● Composite vide o (tele visions , camc orders, VCRs, and v ideo ca pture car ds with composit e-vi deo- in ja cks) NOTE Composite vide o devi ces can b e connec ted to th e syst em only by us ing an optional expansio n produc t. Initiate standby (fn f5) Pres s fn f5 to i nitiate stan dby. When s tandby is ini tiated, your infor mation is sto red i n ran dom acce ss m emory (RAM) , the scree n is cleared, and po wer i s conse rved. W hile the comput er is in stan dby, t he pow er ligh ts bl ink. CAUTION To reduce t he ri sk o f infor matio n loss , save your wor k bef ore ini tiat ing st andby. The c omputer must be turne d on before you ini tiate s tandby . If th e compute r is in hiber nation , you must restor e from hibern ation befo re you can in itiate s tandby. NOTE To resto re from hibernati on, brie fly press the pow er button . To resu me from sta ndby, briefl y pres s the power button, press any key on the keyboard , use the Touch Pad, or press a TouchP ad butt on. To r estore from h ibern ation, br iefly press t he pow er b utton. The function of the fn f 5 hotkey can be c hanged . For e xample, you c an set th e fn f 5 hotkey to in itiate hibern ation ins tead of sta ndby. NOTE In all W indow s ope rating system windows, refer ences t o the sle ep butt on appl y to the fn f5 hotke y. Initiate Q uickLock (fn f6 ) Pres s fn f6 to i nitiate the QuickLo ck security fe ature. QuickLoc k protec ts your inform ation b y disp laying the op erati ng system Log On window . While the Log On wind ow is d isplaye d, the co mput er canno t be acc essed unti l a Wind ows user p asswo rd or a Win dows adminis trato r passw ord is ente red. NOTE Before you can use Q uickLo ck, you must set a Windo ws user passwor d or a Wind ows admin ist rator pa sswor d. To use Quic kLoc k, pr ess fn f6 to display the Log O n wi ndow an d lock the compu ter. The n foll ow the instru ctions on the scre en to enter you r Windows us er passw ord or your Window s adm inistra tor passwo rd and acces s the computer . Decrease scr een brightness (fn f7) Pres s fn f7 to d ecrea se s creen br ightne ss. Hold down the hot key t o dec rease the bright ness l evel increm ent ally. Play, pause or resume an audio CD or a DVD (f n f9) The fn f9 hotke y function s onl y when an audi o CD or a DVD is inserted . If the audio CD or the D VD is ● Not playing, press fn f9 to begin or resu me the play . ● Pla yin g, pr ess fn f9 to pause the pl ay. Stop an audio CD or a DVD (fn f10) Press fn f10 to stop the play o f an au dio CD or a DV D. Play previous track or se ction of an audio CD or a DVD (fn f11) While an audi o CD or a D VD is pl aying, pr ess fn f1 1 to pl ay the p revious tr ack of the CD or th e previou s secti on of th e DVD. NOTE Quick Launch buttons are cal led Easy Acce ss buttons on an o ptional externa l keyb oard . Open the Quick Lau nch Butt ons con trol pan el: ● Select Start > Control Panel > Printers and Othe r Hardware > Quick Launch Butto ns . – or – ● Double -click the Quick Launch Buttons icon in the no tificatio n area, a t the fa r right of the taskbar, or on the Wi ndows desk top. 2. Click the Quick Tile tab . 3. Click Verti cal T ile or Horizo ntal Tile , and then clic k the program s to ti le in the Applications currently running box. 4. Setting advanced preferences You ca n set icon and exter nal keyboar d assign ments in the Qui ck Laun ch B utton control panel . Displaying the Quick Launch Buttons icon To show or hide the Qu ick Launc h Buttons Propert ies icon in the no tification area, at the far right of the taskba r, or on th e Windows des ktop: 1. Open the Quick Lau nch But tons con trol pan el: ● Selec t Start > Control P anel > Pr inters and O ther Hardw are > Quick Launch Button s . – or – ● Double- clic k the Quick Launch But tons icon, eithe r in the notific ation area, at the far right of the taskbar , or on the Windows desktop. 2. Click the Advanc ed tab. On the Adva nced tab you c an di splay or hide th e Qui ck Launch Buttons icon in the no tifica tion area or o n the Windo ws de sktop. ● To display the icon , select the Show icon on th e taskbar or Show icon on th e desktop check bo x. ● To hide the icon, clear the Show icon on the taskbar or Show icon on the desktop chec k box. 3. Setting button assignments on an external k eyboard If you are usin g an opti onal HP ex ternal k eyboar d that fe atures Ea sy Acc ess button s, you can s et Easy Access but ton assi gnments and sc hemes on the Set ting s tab. The Se ttings tab is di sable d and hi dden b y default. To disp lay an d enabl e the Set tings ta b in the Qui ck Launch Bu ttons co ntrol panel : 1. Open the Quick Lau nch Butt ons con trol pan el: ● Select Start > Control Panel > Printers and Othe r Hardware > Quick Launch Butto ns . – or – ● Double -click the Quick Launch Buttons icon in the no tificatio n area, a t the fa r right of the taskbar, or on the Wi ndows desk top. 2. Click the Advanc ed tab. NOTE If you enabl e the Setti ngs tab, you mu st close the Quick Launch Buttons Pr operties dialog box , and then op en it aga in in order t o see the Se ttings tab. 3. 3 Keypads The com puter ha s an embed ded numeri c keypa d and also suppor ts an optio nal externa l numeri c keyp ad or an optiona l exter nal keyboar d that incl udes a nu meric key pad. Compone nt Descrip tion (1) fn key Executes f requently us ed system function s when press ed in combination with a f unction key o r the esc key. (2) num lock light On: Num lock is on. (3) num lk key When pressed with the fn key, enables the e mbedded numeric keypad. (4) Embedded numeric keypad Can be used like the keys on an external numeric keypad. ENWW 11
Using the embedd ed nume ric keyp ad The 15 ke ys of the em bedded numeri c keypad can be used li ke the keys on an exter nal keypad . When the embed ded num eric keyp ad is turn ed on, e ach key on the ke ypad pe rforms th e functi on indica ted by the ico n in the upper- right c orner o f the key. Enabling and disabling the embedded numeric keypad Pres s fn num l k to enab le the embedd ed num eric k eypad. T he num lock l ight is turned on . Press fn num lk again to re turn the k eys to their stand ard key board functio ns. NOTE The em bedded numeric keypad will not func tion wh ile a n externa l keyboa rd or numeric keypad is con nected to the co mputer or to an opti onal e xpansion prod uct. A USB mou se can also b e conn ected to the sy stem using the ports on a n opti onal exp ansio n pro duct. Switching key functio ns on the embedded nu meric keypad You ca n temp orarily alterna te t he functi ons of keys o n the e mbedde d num eric k eypad b etween their standar d keyboar d function s and their keypad functions by us ing the fn key or the fn sh ift key combi natio n. ● To change the functi on of a keypad ke y to keyp ad functi ons while the keypad is off, press and hol d the fn key while pr essi ng t he keyp ad key. ● To use the keyp ad keys tempor arily as standard key s while the keypad is on: ● Press and hold the fn key to type in lowercas e. ● Press and ho ld fn s hift t o type in upper case. Using an ex tern al nu meri c ke ypad Most k eys on most e xtern al num eric k eypads f unctio n diffe rently a ccordi ng to w hether num lock i s on or off. (Num lock is turned off at the factory.) For example: ● When num lo ck is on, most ke ypad keys ty pe number s. ● When num lock is o ff, mos t keypad keys function l ike the arrow, page up, or p age down k eys. When nu m lock on a n extern al ke ypad is turne d on, t he num lock light o n the c ompute r is tu rned on. When nu m lock on a n extern al keyp ad is turne d off, t he num lock l ight on th e compute r is tu rned off. If an externa l keypad is con nected, the embe dded nu meri c keypa d cann ot be turned o n.
