LCD Monitor Quality and Pix el Policy for vf51 Monitor vf51 15-inch monitor The HP vf51 TFT m onitor uses high-precision technology , manufactured according to HP standards, to guarantee trouble - fr ee performance. Nevertheless, the mo nitor may have cosmetic imperfections that appear as small bright or dark spots. This is common to all LCD monitors used in products supplied by all vendors and is not sp ecific to the HP P482 4A LCD . O ne or more defective pixels or sub-pixels cause these imper fections. ⢠A pixel consists of one red, one green, and on e blue sub-pixel. ⢠A defective whole pixel is always on (a bright sp ot on a dark background), or it is always off (a dark spot on a bright background). The fi rst is th e more visible of the two. ⢠A defective sub-pixel (dot defe ct) is less visible than a defective whole pixel and is small and only visible on a specific background. The HP P4824A m onitor does not have more than: ⢠10 total dot defec ts. ⢠10 defective f ull pixels. ⢠10 defective red sub-pixels. ⢠4 defective green sub-pixels (gr een is most visible). ⢠10 defective blu e sub -pixels. ⢠No more than two adjacent (less than 2. 5 mm edge-to -edge) and defective pixels. ⢠No more than two pairs of two adjacent d efective pixels. T o locate defective pixels , the monitor should be viewed under normal operating conditions, in normal operating mode at a supported resolution and refres h rate, from a distance of approximately 50 cm (16 in.). HP expects that, over time, the industry will continue to improve its abilit y to produce LCDs with fewer cosmetic imperfections and HP will adjust guidelines as impr ovements are made. 23 MAIN PAGE

Congratulation s! You have just purchased a TCO'99 approved and la belled product! Your choice has provided you with a product developed for professional use. Your purchase has also contributed to reducing the burden on the environm ent and also to the further deve lopm ent of environm entally adapted electronics products. This product meets the requirem ents for the TCO'99 schem e which provides for an international environm ental and quality labelling of personal com puters. The labelling scheme was dev eloped as a joint effort by the TCO (The Swedish Confed eration of Professional Employees), Svensk a Natursky ddsforeningen (The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation), St atens Energ imyndig het (The Swedish National Energy Ad m inistration) and SEMKO AB. The requirements cov er a wide range of issues: environm ent, ergonomics, usability, reduction of electric and mag netic fields, energy consumption and electrical safety . Why do we have environmentally labelled com puters? In m any countries, environmental labelling has become an established m ethod for encouraging the adaptation of goods and serv ices to the environment. The m ain problem, as far as com puters and other electronics equipment are concerned, is that env ironmentally harmful substances are used both in the products and during their m anufacture. Since it is not so far possible to satisfactorily recycle the majority of electronics equipm ent, most of these potentially dam aging substances sooner or later enter nature. There are also other characteristics of a computer , such as energy consumption levels, that are important from the viewpoints of both the work (internal) and natura l (external) environments. Since all methods of electricity generation hav e a ne gative effect on the env ironment (e.g . acidic and climate- influencing emissions, radioactiv e waste), it is vital to sav e energy . Electronics equipment in offices is often left running continuously and thereby consumes a lot of energ y. What does the e nvironmenal labelling involve ? The environmental dem ands has been developed by Svensk a Naturskyddsforening en (The Swedish Society for Nature Conserv ation). These demands im pose restrictions on the presence and use of heavy metals, brom inated and chlorinated flame re tardants, CFCs (freons) and chlorinated solv ents, among other things. The product m ust be prepared for recycling and the m anufacturer is obliged to have an env ironmental policy w hich must be adhered to in each country where the com pany implem ents its operational policy. The energy requirem ents include a demand that the computer and/or display , af ter a certain period of inactivity , shall reduce its power consumption to a lo wer lev el in one or more stag es. The length of time to reactiv ate the computer shall be reasonable for the user. 29 January, 1999 MAIN PAGE
Below y ou will find a brief summ ary of the environmental requirem ents met by this product. The complete env ironmental criteria docum ent may be ordered from : TCO Develop ment SE-114 94 Stock holm, Sweden Fax: 46 8 782 92 07 Em ail (Internet): dev elopment@ tco.se Current information reg arding TCO' 99 approved and labelled products m ay also be obtained via the Internet, us ing the address: http: //www.tco-info.com/ Environ mental requirements Flam e retardants Flame retardants are present in printed circuit boards, cables, wires, casing s and housings. Their purpose is to prevent, or at least to delay the spread of fire. Up to 30% of the plastic in a computer casing can consist of flam e retardant substances. Mo st flam e retardants contain bromine or chloride, and those flame retardants are chem ically relate d to another group of environm ental toxins, PCBs. Both the flame retardants containing bromine or chlo ride and the PCBs are suspected of g iving rise to severe health effects, including reproductive dam age in fish- eating birds and m amm als, due to the bio- accumulativ e * processes. Flame retardants hav e been f ound in human blood and researchers fear that disturbances in foetus developm ent may occur. The relevant TCO'99 dem and requires that plastic co m ponents weighing m ore than 25 grams m ust not contain flame retardants with org anically bound brom in e or chlorine. Flame retardants are allowed in the printed circuit boards since no substitutes are available. Cadmium ** Cadm ium is present in recharg eable batteries and in the colour-g enerating layers of certain com puter displays. Cadm ium dam ages the nerv ous system a nd is toxic in high doses. The relevant TCO' 99 requirement states that batteries, the colour- generating layers of di splay screens and the electrical or electronics components m ust not contain any cadmium. Mercury ** Mercury is som etimes found in batteries, relay s and switches. It dam ages the nerv ous system and is toxic in high doses. The relevant TCO' 99 requireme nt states that batteries m ay not contain any mercury . It also dem ands that mercury is not presen t in any of the electrical or electronics com ponents associated with the labelled unit. There is however one exception. Mercury is, for the tim e being, permitted in the back light sy stem of flat panel m onitors as there today is no com mercially available alternative. TCO aims on rem oving this exception when a mercury free alternative is av ailable. CFCs (freons) The relevant TCO'99 requirem ent states that neither CFCs nor HCFCs may be used during the manufacture and assem bly of the product. CFCs (f reons) are sometim es used for washing printed circuit boards. CFCs break down ozone and thereb y damag e the ozone lay er in the stratosphere, causing increased reception on earth of ultrav iolet light with e.g. increased risk s of skin cancer (malig nant melanom a) as a consequence. Lead ** Lead can be found in picture tubes, display screens, solders and capacitors. Lead dam ages the nervous system and in higher doses, causes lead poisoni ng. The relevant TCO´ 99 requirement perm its the inclusion of lead since no repl acement has yet been dev eloped. * Bio-accumulative is defined as subs tances which accumul ate within l iving organism s ** Lead, Cadmium and Mercury are heavy m etals whic h are Bio-accumulative. 29 January, 1999 MAIN PAGE

When the monitor is on, the light (LED) near the P ower button is illuminated. The light is green when both the monitor and PC are active, and amber when the monitor is in a reduced power mode. If your PC sends power saving signals to the mo nitor, the monitorâs pow er management features reduce power consumption to low levels when yo ur PC goes into its power - saving mode. See the âMinimizing P ower Consumption â section for more information. If your PC doesn ât use indust ry standard power - save signaling te chniques, you can reduce power consumption by turning off the monitor when i t won ât be used for an extended period. Y ou can turn the monitor off even if you leave your PC running. Note: Because of t he technolo gy used in L CD panels, screen s avers will not prolong t he life of your mon itor. So if the monit or will not be us ed for an extended per i od, be sure to turn it off . Wa r n i n g T o completely dis connec t power from you r displa y , you must remove the po wer cord from the wall outlet and then remov e the power c able from t he display . 8 MAIN PAGE
Tilting the Monitor The monitor has a tilt feature that allows you to tilt the moni tor back and forth to find the most comfortable viewing pos ition. I f you use a lower resolution (such as 64 0 x 480), the image is exp anded to fill the screen but with a slightly degraded image quality . Y our monitor supports many common video mod es, as shown in the â Video Modesâ section. Check the documentation supplied with your PC and video adapter card to find out which modes they support. T o view the video mode in Microsoft Wi ndo ws, check the Windows settin gs in your PC. Setting the R efresh Rate The image refresh rat e is the number of times p er second that the image is refreshed; it is also known as the vert ical frequ ency . Although your LCD monitor supports up to 75 Hz for analog video input, we recommend that you 9 MAIN PAGE
use 60 Hz refresh rate for best performance. Th e t able in the â Video Modeâ section shows the image refresh rates supported by the moni tor at different screen resolu tions. T o set the refresh rate with a standard W indows inst allation, consult your Wi ndows or graphics car d documentation. Minimizing P ower Consumption Many PCs support industry standard powe r - sa ve signaling techniqu es. P ower management features reduce the monitorâs po wer consumption after a period of keyboard and mouse inactivity . When the monitor is in a power - saving mode, th e screen is blank and t he power indicator turns amber . P ressing a key on the keyboard or moving the mo use restores the image in severa l seconds. Consult your PC documentat ion for information about se tting the power - saving modes. The monitor accepts the signals for the three standard power - saving modes â Standby , Suspend, and Sleep â from your PC. F or any of these cond itions, the monit or will go into Sleep mode. Caring for and Cleaning the Monitor T o maximize screen life and prevent damage to the LCD panel, we reco mmend that you: î Use the monitor power management sy stem (if available on your PC). î If you don ât use a power management system, t u rn off the monitor when you wo n ât be using it for an extended period. î Don ât press, rub, or poke the monitor with your finger or other object. î Handle your monitor with care.
