Identifying components Front panel components Compone nt Description (1) Power button Provides hibernation and restor es full power to a docked computer. After the computer is docked, the power bu tton on the docking station acts just like the computer power button, utilizing the computer power management settings. (2) Power status light On: The docking station is connected to AC power. (3) Volume mute button Mutes and restores docking station sound. (4) Volume scroll zone Adjusts spe ake r vol u me. Slide your finger to the left to decrease volume and to the right to increase volume. You can also tap the minus sign on the scroll zone to decrease volume, or tap the p lus sign on the scroll zone to increase volume. Rear panel components Compone nt Description (1) Power connector 1 light On: The docking station is on. (2) Power connector 1 Connects the docking station to a Smart AC adapter. (3) Power connector 2 light On: The docking station is on. (4) Power connector 2 Connects the docking station to a standard AC adapter. (5) USB ports (4) Connect optional USB devices. Power is always on to all USB ports when the docking station is connected to AC pow er. NOTE: There are 2 additional USB ports on the right panel of the docking station. (6) RJ-45 (network ) jack Connects an Ethernet network cable. (7) External monitor port Connects an optional external VGA monitor or projector. (8) S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) digital audio jack Connects an optional compatib le audio/video receiver through a digita l coaxial cable (pur chased separately). (12) Security cable slot Attaches an optional securi ty cable to the docking station. NOTE: The secur ity cable is designed to act as a deterrent, but it may not prevent the docking station from being mishandled or stolen. Right panel components Compone nt Description (1) PC port The (USB type B) PC port con nects an optional secondary computer to the docking statio n. NOTE: Do not use the PC port as a printer connection. (2) Auxiliary audio jack Connects an optional MP3 player or other audio device to docking station speakers. NOTE: When an auxiliary audio device is connected, control docking station speakers w ith the audio device volume controls. (3) Audio-out (headphone) jack Produces sound when conne cted to optional external powered stereo speakers, head phones, ear buds, headset, or television audio. NOTE: The docking station speakers are muted when a device is connected to the headphone jack. (4) Audio-in (microphone) jack Connects an optional computer hea dset microphone, stereo array microphone, or mona ural microphone. (5) USB ports (2) Connect optional USB devices. Power is always on to all USB ports when the docking station is connected to AC pow er. Setting up the docking station Step 1: Adjusting the docking station The docking station mu st be upri ght before a comput er can be docke d. To adjust the docking station to an upright po sition: 1. Lower the leve r (1) located on the left side of the docking station uppe r panel to the down posi tion. 2. Grasp the upper pane l (2) with both hands, and t ilt the panel toward you. 3. Lift the lever (3) to the up position to lock the upper p anel position. To lower the docking station: 1. Lower the leve r (1) located on the left side of the docking station uppe r panel to the down posi tion. 2. Step 2: Connecting to AC power WARNING! To reduce the risk of el ec tric sh ock or damage to yo ur eq uipment: Plug the power cord into an AC outlet that is easily accessib le at all times. Disconnect power from the prod uct by unplugging the power cord from the AC outlet. If provided with a 3-pin attachment plug on the pow er cord, plug the cord i nto a grounded (e arthed) 3- pin outlet. Do not disable the p ower cord groun ding pin, for exam ple, by atta ching a 2- pin adapter. Th e grounding pin is an important safety feature. It is possible to rece ive an electric shock from a syst em that is not prop erly grou n de d. NOTE: Both a Smart AC power conne ctor and a standard AC power conn ector are provided. Choo se the connector that correspo nds to the compute r AC power adaptor being use d. Connect the docking sta tion to an AC power so urce using the compute r AC adapter and power cord: 1. Identify the correct po wer connector on the docking station. NOTE: Power cords a nd AC outlets vary in a ppearance by region and country. NOTE: The AC adapter is included with the comp uter or purc ha se d s eparately. 2. Connect the comp ut er AC adapter to the co rresponding pow e r con n ect or on the docking st ation (1) . 3. Connect the AC power cord to the AC adapter (2) . 4. 2. Slide the computer int o th e docking sta tio n wit h the keyboard facing yo u . 3. Move the expansion cable to either side of the docking station, depend ing on where the expansion port on your compu ter is located. NOTE: The location of the exp ansion port on your co mputer varies by computer seri es and model. NOTE: It is important to positio n the cabl e correctly , so that the cable c an move free ly. 4. 5. Connect the e xpan si on ca ble to the expa nsio n po rt on the compu ter (2) , matching th e icon o n th e computer expansion port wi th the ic on on the end of the expansion cable. CAUTION : To preven t damage to the exp ansion port , be sure that you corre ctly align the expansion cable with the expan sion port on the computer. NOTE: Th e expansion port may also be calle d “expansion port 3” in th e computer documentatio n. 6. If the computer is off, press t he power button on the docked computer. NOTE: The power button location on the docked computer varies by co mputer series and model. The power sta tus light on the fron t of the docking statio n turns on. NOTE: After the comp uter is docked, the internal computer speakers are disabled an d the docking station speakers are activa ted. 2 Using the docking station Docking station guidelines ● Operating sy stems —For optimal performa nce, use the dockin g station with HP or Compaq computers running Microsoft® Window s® XP or la ter. ● Power —To use docking station features, AC powe r must be connected to the docking station. Yo u do not have to conn ec t power to the compu te r wh ile it is do cke d. ● Computer do cking and un docking —The computer can be docked t o o r un do cke d f rom the docking station, regardless o f wh ethe r they are on or o ff. The good dock connection li ght on the expansion cable shows a successful docking conn ection and turns on only when the computer is turned on. The p ower status light on the do ck ing statio n turns on when the docked computer is turned on. ● External devices —When the computer is dock ed , yo u may attach externa l de vices to the ports on the rear and rig ht panels of the docki ng station or to the ports on the computer. NOTE: Wh en the computer is docked, the external mo nitor port on the computer is disabled. Adjusting the volume To adjust the volu me on the docking statio n: Slide your finger to the left to decrease volume and to the right to increase volume. You can also ta p the minus sign (1) on the scroll zone to d ec rease volume, or tap t he plu s sign (2) on the scroll zone to increase volume. Connecting to a network You can connect your docked compute r through the docking station to a network using an Ethernet cable (purchased separately). CAUTION: To prevent pe rf ormance issues, on ly on e n et work jack (either the n e twork jack on th e docked computer or the netwo rk jack on the docking statio n) should be used at any o ne time. 1. If you haven’t a l re ad y do ne so , dock the comput er . 2. Connecting video The external monitor po rt connects an external VGA display device, such as an exte rnal monitor or a projector, to the docking station . NOTE: The external mon itor port on the computer is disabled wh en the compute r is docked. To connect an e xte rn al VG A d is play d evice : 1. Connect the device ca ble to the external monitor port on the rear panel of the docking station. 2. Press fn f4 on the docked co mputer one or more times to switch the screen image to the externa l display device. Connecting analog audio To connect anal og audio: 1. Connect the sin gle-connector end of an audio Y-ca ble (purchased se parately) to the headphon e jack (1) on the right panel of the docking station. 2. Connect the red and white connectors (2) on the other end of the cable in to the red and white audio- in jacks on your television or stereo equipment . Refer to your tele vision or ster eo equipment u ser gu ide for t he jack names, colors a nd loc ations. NOTE: Th e docking station spea kers are muted when a device is connected to the hea dphone jack. Connecting S/PDIF digital audio The docking station p rovides an S/PDIF di gital audio jack for an option al digital audio connection . A coaxial digital a udio cable (purchase d separately) and an audio re ceiver (television or stereo) with a coaxial digita l audio port is requ ired to fully enable this feature . To connect di gital audio: 1. Connect on e e nd of a coaxial digital audio ca ble (purchased sepa rat ely) to the or an ge S/ PDIF digital audio ja ck on the rear panel of the dockin g station (1) . 2. Connect the other end of th e cable to the digital audio jack on your television or stereo e quipment (2) . Refer to your television or stereo equipmen t user guide for the jack name and location . NOTE: The docking station speakers are muted when a device is conn ected to the digi tal audio jack. NOTE: Volume is controlled using controls located on the digital a udio device. Connecting auxiliary audio The docking station provides an au xiliary audio jack for an optional auxiliary audio devi ce connection. This connection allows the device to play through the to docki ng station speakers. To connect auxiliary aud io: 1. Connect one e nd of the audio-inline cable to the auxili ary audio jack (1) on the right panel of the docking station. 2. Connect the other end of the ca ble to the audio-out (h eadphone) jack (2) on your auxiliary device. Connecting a wireless mouse and keyboard If you are connecting a wireless mouse and ke yboard to the do cking station, use this procedure to establish a wireless mouse an d keyboard connection (select models only). 1. Locate an op en USB port (1) on the docking station and insert the wi reless receiver (2) . 2. Remove the i nsulation tape on the bottom of the mouse. 3. Press the reset button o n the bottom of the wireless mouse until the blue light on the mouse starts flashing, indicating a wireless connection. 4. Remove the insulatio n tape on the botto m of the wireless keyboard. 5. Press the connect button on the bottom of the wireless keyboard until the blue ligh t on the keyboard starts flashing, indica ting a wireless connection . Connecting a secondary comput er to the docking station A secondary compu ter connected to th e docking station th rough the PC port has access to the optional docking station internal h ard drive, and to an y USB devices conn ected to the docking station. NOTE: Certain devices such as prin ters or external webca ms may require dev ice drivers or so ftwa re to be loaded onto th e se co nd ar y computer. 1. Connect the USB cable to the PC (U SB type B) port locate d on the right panel of the docki ng station (1) . 2. Connect the o ther end of the ca ble to a USB port (2) on the se condary computer. 3. Turn on the secondary compute r. Installing an optional hard drive Installing an HP Pe rsonal Media Drive You can insert an HP Personal Media Drive in to the docking station for extra storage capacity. 1. Remove the ha rd dr ive carrier sc rew (1) on the rear panel o f the docking stat ion and remove the hard drive cover (2) from the h ar d drive b ay . CAUTION: To reduce the possibi lity of damaging the hard drive cover, g rasp the ha rd drive cover from the bottom to remove it. 2. Insert th e hard dr ive (1) into the ha rd drive bay unt il the drive is fully seated. NOTE: If the hard drive light (2) do es not turn on, reseat the h ard drive. 3. Replace the hard drive carrier screw (3) . 4. Connect the hard drive to addit ional AC power, if desired: a. Connect the hard drive AC adapter to the hard drive po wer connector (1) on the docking station. b. Connect the po wer cord to the AC ad apter (2) . c. Connect the powe r cord to the AC outlet (3) . NOTE: Power cords and AC outl ets vary in appearance by region and country. NOTE: For more information on the ha rd dr ive, refer to the ins tructions that we re inclu d ed with the drive. Installing an HP Pocket Media Drive and HP Pocket Media Drive Adapter 1. Remove the ha rd dr ive carrier sc rew (1) on the rear panel o f the docking stat ion and remove the hard drive cover (2) from the h ar d drive b ay . CAUTION: To reduce the possibi lity of damaging the hard drive cover, g rasp the ha rd drive cover from the bottom to remove it. 2. Insert the HP Pocket Medi a Drive Adapte r (1) into the hard drive ba y until the adap ter is fully seated. 3. Replace the hard drive carrier screw (2) . 4. Insert the Pocket Med ia Drive (1) in to the adapter until th e drive is fully seated. NOTE: If the hard driv e ligh t (2) does not tu rn on, reseat th e hard drive. NOTE: For more information on the HP Pocket Media Drive, refer to the instructions that we re included with the kit. Connecting an optional security cable NOTE: The security cable is d esigned to act as a dete rrent, but it may not prevent the docking station from being mishan dled or stolen. To install a security cable: 1. Loop the security cable around a secured object. 2. Insert th e key (1) into the cable lock (2) . 3. Insert the cable lock into the security cable slot on the docking station (3) , and then lock the cabl e lock with the key. NOTE: Installing a security ca ble to the docking station will not prevent a docke d computer from being mishandled or sto len. 3 Undocking the computer 1. Press and hold the buttons (1) on the sides of the expansion cable connector, and then disconnect the cable from the computer (2) . 4 Troubleshooting Solving common problems The following tab les list possible probl ems and the recommended sol utions. General use and connection problems Problem Possible cause Solution The connection indicator light is not on. The computer is not powered on. Turn on the computer. The docking station is not connected to AC power. Connect the AC adapter to the docking station and to an AC outlet . The expansion cable on the docking st ation is not fully connected to the expansion port on the computer. Disconnect the expansion cable from the computer, and then reconnect the cable to the expansion port on the compu ter. The computer is in sleep, standby or hibernation. Exit sleep, standby or hibernation. The computer shuts d own unexpectedly. The docking station is not connected to AC power, draining the compu ter batt ery. Connect the AC adapter to the docking station and to an AC outlet . The ports or jacks on the docking station are not working. The docking station is not connected to AC power. Connect the AC adapter to the docking station and to an AC outlet . The computer is not docked correctly. Redock the computer. The optional wireless keyboard or mouse does not work. The wireless receiver is not connected to a USB port. Connect the wireless receive r to a USB port. The wireless receiver and keyboard or mouse have not been synchronized. Synchronize the devices by pressing the appropriate buttons. The wireless keyboard or mouse has no battery power . Audio problems Problem Possible cause Solution The docking station speakers have littl e or no volum e . The docking station speake rs are muted or the volume is se t too low. Adjust the volume using the volume scroll zone. The docking station is not connected to AC power. Connect the AC adapter from the docking station to an AC outlet. Headphones or other audio device is connected to the headphone jack of the docking station or computer, muting the docking station speakers. Unplug the headphones or other audio device connected to the headphone jack of the docking station or computer. The computer is not docked correctly. Redock the computer. The volume level does not increase or dec re a se . The volume scroll zone is not being used correctly. When increasing volume, slide your finger from left to r ight on the volume scroll zone, or tap the plus sign. When decreasing volume, slide your finger from r ight to left on the volume scroll zone, or tap the minus sign. Headphones or other audio device connected to the docking station do not produce sound. Headphones or other audio device is connected to the headphone jack on the computer. Using the headphone jack on the computer mutes docking station sound. Disconnect the headphones or other audio device from the headphone jack on the computer. A microphone connected to the computer does not work. A microphone is connected to the docking station. While a microphone is connected to the docking station, the microphone jack on the computer is disabled. Either use the microphone connected to the docking station or disconnect it. A connected home entertainment system does not have audio. Audio is not connected properly. Be sure that the docking station is properly connected to the home entertainment system. A connected home entertainment system does not experience surround sound. The home entertainment system may not support digital audio. Video problems Problem Possible cause Solution A connected home entertainment system does not have video. The video cable is not connected correctly. Disconnect and reconne ct the video cable. The screen image is displaying on the comput er. Press fn f4 on the computer to switch the image from the computer to the external display. The docking station is not connected to AC power. Connect the AC adapter to the docking station and to an AC outlet . The computer is not docked correctly. Redock the computer.
