Understand the terms This gu ide uses certain terms for the steps that you are asked to perform. • Press means to briefly pres s, then release a ke y . For example, pres s 7 means press th e k ey on the key pad that is labele d with the nu mber 7 and th e let ters, “p,q,r ,s.” • Press and h old means to press and hold a ke y for two to three seconds (d ependin g on the feat ure bei ng used ), then r elease t he key . • High light ed options o n the screen are enclosed wit hin a dark bar . Th e sel ect io n ke ys are us ed to ac t on th e h ighli ghted optio n. • Sele ction ke ys a re us ed to select a me nu option, press th e selection key below the menu item on the phone’s screen. A n umber of fea tures inc luded in this guide are called Netw ork Services. These are special service s you arrange through y our wireless service provide r . B efore you ca n ta ke adva ntage of an y of these Ne two rk Servic es, yo u must subscribe to th em throu gh your s ervice prov ider and obtain instructions for their use from your service provider . Charge the battery Before you begi n using your phon e, you need to prepare your pho ne by charging the battery . 1 Pl u g the charger into a standard wall outle t, th en c onnect t he lead from the c harg er to th e bottom of the phone . 2 The batte ry powe r indica tor (or batte ry bar) appears on the screen an d starts scrolling. Charging appears if the phon e is on. 3 When the battery bar stops scrolling, th e battery ch arge is c omplete. Batter y full appears if the phone is on . 4 Disconnect th e charger from the phone. IMP O RT ANT BATTE RY INFORMAT ION Use the following guide lines to obtain the be st performance from your batte ry: • With you r phone turn ed off, charge your new battery for four hours before its first use. U se the battery un til it is fully discharge d. Repea t this proce dure twice for a to tal of three char ging cycles . • Battery operation t ime ma y be less than the e stimate d times durin g the firs t charges . This con dition is normal. • If the ba ttery is fully dis charg ed, th e scr oll ing ba rs may not ap pear imme diat ely when ch arging. • After the first charge, you c an m ake and rece ive calls du ring the charging cycle , but the calls interru pt the cha rge. When the phone call end s, the ch arge w ill re su me.

PRO LONG BATT ERY LIFE For good ope ra tion ti mes with NiMH batteries, discharge the b attery from time to time by leavin g your phone switched on until it turns itself off. Ignore any messag es to re charge you r batte ry and le t the batt ery com plet ely discharge . Impor tant : Do n ot atte mpt to disch arge t he battery by any other means . • SET UP YOUR HEADSET Y our phon e is compa tible with the H DC-5, H DC-1 0, HDE-2, a nd HDB -5 he ads et s. The loopse t gives hearing-aid users clear access to digital telephony for the first t ime. It allows people w ith T -coil e quipped hearing aids to make a nd receiv e calls wit hout nois e interfere nce. T o activate the Loopset, see “Accessory settings” on page 49. Note: The loopset is sold separately as an enh a nceme nt to the ph one. HOW THE LOO P SE T WORKS The LPS-3 Loopset uses induc tive technology to transmit sound to a hearin g aid equipped with a T -coil. The sound from the p hone is amplified mo re efficiently and background noise is eliminated . The loopset is easy to use . W ear the loopset around your ne ck, connect it to your phone, and speak directly tow ard the m icrophone. The phon e uses three types of indicators: signal strength, battery power and handset volu me. Icon s are graphical representations of a s pe cific item or situation. For e x ample, an icon appears when you h ave a voice message in your mailbox. Indicators • Signal stre ngth – shows the sign al strengt h of the wirele ss netw ork at yo ur current location .
