Network services To use the device you must have service from a wireless service provider. Many of the features require s pecial network features. These features are not avai lable on all networks; other ne tworks may require that you make specific arrangements with your service provider before you ca n use t he network serv ices. Us ing network services involves transm ission of data. Check with yo ur service provider for details about fees in your h ome network and when roaming on other netw orks. This device supports WAP 2 .0 protocols (HTTP and SSL) that run on TCP/IP prot ocols. Some features of this device, such as multimedia me ssag ing (MMS), browsing, and e-mail applicati on, require network support for these techno logies. Shared memory The following features in th is device m ay share m emory: multimedia messaging (MMS), e-mail application, instant messaging. Use of one or more of these features may reduce the memory availabl e for the remaining features sha ring me mory. Your device may display a m essage tha t the memory is full wh en you try to use a sha red memory feature. In this case, delete some of th e informat ion or entries stored in the s hared memory features before continu ing. Access codes The security code help s to protect your phone against unauthorised us e. You can c reate and change the code, and set the phone to r equest the code. Keep the code secret and in a sa fe place separa te from your ph one. If y ou forget the code and your phone is lo cked, your phone will require service and additional charges may apply. The PIN code supplied wi th the SIM card protects th e card against unauthorized use. The PIN2 code supplied with some SIM cards is required to access certain services. If you enter the PIN or PIN2 code incorrectly thr ee times in succession, you are asked for the PUK or PUK2 code. If you do not hav e them, conta ct your s ervice provi d er. The module PIN is required to access the information in the security module of your SI M card. The s igning PIN m ay be required for the digital si gnatur e. The barring password is required when using th e call barring service. To set how yo ur phone uses the a ccess codes and secu rity settin gs, select Menu > Se ttings > Securit y . Main tenance For maintenance services, check your nearest Nokia Care point a t http:// www.nokia.com.hk/rep air. Get started Install SIM card and battery Always s witch the devi ce o ff and disconnect the charger before removing the battery. The SIM card and its contacts can be easily damaged by scratches or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card. 1. 3. Open the SI M card holder, and insert the SIM card into the holder with th e contact surface fa cing down (4). Close the SIM card holder. 4. Insert the battery (5), an d replace the back cover (6). Charge the battery Your battery has been partially charg ed at the facto ry. If the device indi cates a low charge, do the following: 1. Connect the charger to a wall outlet. 2. Connect the charger to th e device. 3. When the device indicates a full charge, disconnect the charger from the devi ce, then fr om the wa ll outlet. You do not need to charge th e battery fo r a specific length of time, a nd you can use the device while it is charging. If the battery is completely disch a rged, it may take several minutes before the charging indicator appears on the display or before any calls can be mad e. Antenna Your device may have int ernal and externa l ante nnas. As with an y radio trans mitting device, avoi d touching th e antenna area unnec essar ily w hile th e antenn a is tran smittin g or rec eiving. Headset Warning: Listen to mu sic at a moder ate level. Continuous exposure to high v olume may damage your hearing. Do not hold t he device nea r your ear w hen the loudspeaker is in use, because the volume may be extremely loud. Warning: When you use the headset, your ability to hea r outside s ounds may be affected. Do not us e the headset where it can endanger your safety. When connecting any e xternal device or any he adset, other than those ap proved by Nokia for use with this device, to the Nokia A V Connector, pay special at tention to volume levels . Do not connect products that create an output signal as this may ca use damage to th e device. Do not con n ect an y voltage s ource to the Nokia AV Connector. Switch the phone on and off To switch the phone on or off, press and hold the power key. Standby mode When the phone is ready for us e, and you have not entered any characters, the phone is in the standby mode. 1 Net work signa l stre ngth 2 Battery charge level 3 Network name or operator logo 4 Func tions of selection keys The left selection key is Go to for you to view the functions in your personal shortcut list . Keypad lock To prevent accidental keyp resses, se lect Menu , and press * within 3.5 seconds t o lock the keypad. To unlock the keypad, select Unl oc k , and press * within 1.5 seconds. If the sec urity key g uard is on, enter the security code when requested. To s et the key pad to lock auto matically after a p reset tim e when the phone is in th e standby mode, select Menu > Sett ings > Phone > A utomatic ke yguard > On . To answer a call when the keypad is loc ked, press the call key. When you end or reject the call, the k eypad locks auto mat ically. When the device or keypad is locked, calls may be po ssible to the official emergency number programmed into your device. Functions without a SIM card Some func tions of yo ur phone may be used without insertin g a SIM card, su ch as Orga niser fun ctions and games. S ome functions app ear dimmed i n the menu s and cannot b e used. Calls Make and ans wer a call To make a call, enter the phone nu mber, including the country code and area code if nece ssary. Press the call key to call the number. Scroll up to increa se or down to decrease the volume of the ea rpiece or headset du ring the phone call. T o a n s w e r a n i n c o m i n g c a l l , p r ess the call key. To reject the call without a nswering, press the en d key. Loudspeaker If available, you may select Lo udsp. or Normal to use the loudspeaker or the earpiece of the phone during a c all. Warning: Do not hold the device near your ear when the loudspeaker is in use, because the volume may be extremely loud. Dialling shortcuts To assign a phone number to one of the number keys, 2 to 9, s ele ct Menu > Co ntacts > Speed dials , scroll to a des ired n umbe r, and s ele ct As sign . To switc h the speed dialli ng function on, select Menu > Sett ings > Call > Speed di alling > On . To make a call using speed di alling, in the standby mode, press and hold the desired number key. Write text Text modes To enter tex t (for example, wh en writing messages) you can use tradit ional or predictive tex t input. When you write text , press a nd hold Op tio ns to switch between tradition a l text input, indicated by , and predictive text input, indicated by . Not all languages are supported by predicti ve text input. The character cases are indicated by , , and . To change the character case, press # . T o c h a n g e f r o m t h e letter to number mode, indi cated by , press a nd hold # , and select Number m ode . To chang e from th e number to th e letter mo de, pr ess and ho ld # . Traditional t ext input Press a number key, 2-9, re peatedly until the desired characte r appears. The availa ble characters depend on t h e selected writing language. If the ne xt letter you want is located on the same key as the present one, wait until th e cursor appears , and enter the letter. To access the mos t common punc tuation ma rks and sp ecial characters, pr ess 1 repeatedly. To acc ess the list of special characters, pr ess * . Predictive text input Predictive text input is base d on a built-in dictionary to which y ou can also add new wor ds. 1. Start writing a word, using the keys 2 to 9 . Press each key only once for one letter. 2. To confirm a word, scroll right or add a space. ● If the word is not correct, press * repeat edly, an d select the word from the list. ● If the ? character is displayed after the word, the word you inten ded to w rite is not in the dictionary. ● To write compound words, enter th e firs t part of t he word, and scroll ri ght to confirm it. Write the last par t of the w ord, and co nfirm the wor d. 3. Start writ ing the next word. Navigate the menus The phone func tions are grouped into men us. Not a ll menu functions or option it ems are described here. In the standby mode, select Me nu and the desired menu and submenu. Select Exi t or Bac k to exit the current level of menu. Press the end key to return to the standby mode directly. To change th e men u view , sel ect Menu > Option s > Main menu vie w . Mess agin g You can read , write, send, a n d save tex t, multimedia, audio, and flash messa ges, a nd e-mail. T he messag ing services can only be used if your network or service provider supports them. Text and multimedia messages You can crea te a message and optiona lly attach, for example, a picture. Tex t me ssag es Your de vice supports text me ssages beyond the li mit for a single me ssage. Lon g er messages a re sent as two or more messa ges. Your serv ice provid er ma y charg e accor din gly. Characters with accents or other marks, and characters from some langu age option s, take up more space, an d limit the number of charac ters th at can be sent in a single me ssage. An indica tor at the top of the display sh ows the total number of characters left and the n umber of messag es needed for sending. Before you ca n send m essag es, yo u must save your messa ge centre number. Select Menu > Messaging > Message settings > T ext messag es > Message centres > Add centre , enter a nam e, and the number from the service provider. Multimedia messages A multimedia message can cont ain text, pi ctures, and sound or video clips. Only devices that ha ve compat ible features can receive and display multimedia message s. The ap pearance of a messa ge may vary depending on the receiving device. The wireless network may limit the size of MMS messa ges. If the inserted picture exceed s this limit the device ma y make it smaller so that it can be se nt by MMS. © 20 09 Nok ia. All ri ghts reserved . 23
Importan t: Exercise cautio n when opening messa ges. Messa ges may contain malicious softw are or otherwise be harmful to your device or PC. For availability and subscr iption to th e multimedia messa ging service (MMS), cont act your service p rovider. You may als o downloa d the configura t ion settings. Se e "Nokia su pport" , p. 12 . Create a text or m u ltimedia message 1. Select Menu > Messagi ng > Cre ate m essage > Mess age . 2. To add recipients, scroll to the To: field, and enter the recipient’s number or e-ma il address, or select Add to select recipients from th e av ailable option s. Select Option s to add recipients and subjects and to set sending options. 3. Scroll to the Te xt: field, and enter the message text. 4. To attach content to the messa ge, scroll to the attachm ent ba r at the bott o m of the disp lay and select the desired type of content. 5. To send the message, press Se nd . Service providers may charge differently depending on the messa ge type. Check with you r service provider for details. E-mail Access your POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail account with your ph one to read, write, and send e-ma il. This e-mail appli cation is different from the SMS e-mail function. Before yo u can u se e-ma il, you m ust ha ve an e-mail account and the correct settin gs. To check the a v ailabili ty and the sett ings of your e-mail account, conta ct your e- mail service provider. Y ou may receive the e-mail configuration s ettings as a config uration mess age. E-mail setup wi zard The e-mail setup wizard starts au tomatically if no e-mail settin gs are defined in the phone. To start the setup wizard for an additional e- mail account, select Menu > Messaging and the existing e-mail account. Select Option s > Add mailbox t o start the e-ma il setup wizard. Follow the instructio ns on the display. Write and send an e-mail To write an e-mail, select Menu > Messaging > Cre ate message > E-mail message . To select the retrieve mode, select Menu > Messaging > Message settings > E -mail message s > Edi t mailboxe s and the desired mailbox, and Downl oading sett ings > Retri eve m ode . To do wnload e- mail, select Menu > Me ssaging and the desired mailbox; confirm t he query for connect ion if necessa ry. Using your device while flying in aircraft is prohibited. Switch off your device before boarding an aircraft. Emergency calls Importan t: This device operates using radio sign als, wirele ss netw orks, landline net works, and us er- programmed fu nctions. If you r device sup ports voice calls over the internet (internet calls ), act ivate bo th the inter net calls and the cellular phone. The dev ice will attem pt t o make emergency calls over bo th the cellular networks and through your in ternet call prov ider if b oth are activated. Connections in all conditions cannot be guaranteed. You should never rely so lely on an y wireless device for essential communication s like medical emergencies . To make an emergency call: 1. If the device is not on, s w itch it on. Check for adequate sign al strength. 4. Press th e call key. When making an emergency ca ll, give all the necessary information as accurately as possible. Certificat ion information (SAR) This m obile dev ice me ets guide lines for exp osure to radio waves. Your mobile devic e is a radio t ransm itter and receiv er. It is designed not to exceed th e limits for exposure to radio waves recommended by intern ational guidelines. If a problem develops during the limited warranty period, the Consumer should take the followi ng step - by-step proce d ure: a) The Consumer sha ll return the Product to the place of purchase for repair or replacement processing. b) If "a" is not conven ient, the Cons umer may contact the local Nokia office for th e location of the neares t authorised service centre. c) The Cons umer shall arrange for the Product to be delivered to the authorised service centre.
