Get started Insert SIM card and battery Safe remov al. Alwa ys switch the device off and disconnect the charger before removing the battery. The SIM card and its contacts can be easily damaged by scratches or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card. 1 Press and slide th e back cover towards the bottom of the phone, and remove it (1). 2 Remove the battery (2). 3 Insert the SIM card into the holder with the contact surface facing down (3). 4 Insert the battery (4), and replace the back cover (5). Remo ve the S IM card Insert a microSD card Use only compatible microSD cards approved by Nokia for use with this device. Noki a uses approved industry standards for memory cards, but some brands ma y not be fully compatible wit h this device. Incomp atible cards ma y damage the card and t he devi ce and corrupt data sto red on the card. Your phone supports microSD cards with a capacity of up to 8 GB. 1 Open the cove r of the memory card slot. 2 Insert the card in to the memory ca rd slot with the contact surface fa cing u p, an d press until it locks into place. 3 Close the cover of the memory card slot. damage th e memory card and the dev ice, and corrupt data stored on the card. You ca n remove or replace th e memory card during phone operation without switchi ng the device off, but you need to ens ure th at no ap plicatio n is currently accessing the memory card. Charge the b attery Your battery has been partially charg ed at the fa ctory. If the device indi cates a low charge, do the following: 1 Connect th e charger to a wa ll outlet. 2 Connect the ch arger to the devi ce. 10 Get started © 2009 Nokia . All rights reserved .
3 When the device indicates a full charge, disconnect the charger from the device, then from the wa ll outlet. You do not need to charge th e battery fo r a specific length of time, a nd you can use the device while it is charging. If the battery is completely disch arged, it ma y take several minutes before the charging indicator appears on the display or before any calls can be mad e. Ante nna Your device may ha ve intern a l and external antenn as. Avoid touchin g the antenna a rea unnecessarily while the antenn a is tr ansmit ting or receiving. Contact wit h ante nnas affects th e communicati on qual ity and may cause a hig her power lev el during op eration an d may reduce the battery life. Headset Warning: Continuous exposure to high v olume may damage your hearin g. List en to music at a moderate level, and do not hold the device near your ear when the loud speaker is in use. Warning: When you use the headset, yo ur ability to hear outside sounds may be affected. Do not use the h eadse t where it can endang er your safety. When connecting any externa l device or any headse t, other than those ap proved by Nokia for use with this device, to the Nokia A V Connector, pay special at tention to volume levels . Keypad l ock To prevent accidental keyp resses, sele ct Menu , and press * within 3.5 seconds to lock the keyp ad. To unlock the keypad, select Unl oc k , and press * wi thin 1. 5 seconds. If the sec urity keyg uard is on, enter the security code when requested. To s et the key pad to lock aut omatica lly after a p reset time when the phone is in th e standby mode, select Menu > Sett ings > Pho ne > Automati c keyguard > On . When the device or keypad is locked, calls may be po ssible to the official emergency number programmed into your device. Networ k services To use the device you must have service from a wireless service provider. Some featur es are no t available on all networks; oth er features may require tha t you make specific arrangements with your service p rovider to use them. Your service provider may ha ve requested that certain features be d isabled or not activated in your device. If so, these feat ures w ill not appear on yo ur device menu . Your device m ay also have cus tomized items such a s menu names, menu order, and icons. Shared memory The following features in th is device m ay share m emory: multimedia messaging (MMS), e-mail application, instant messaging. Use of one or more of these features may reduce the memory available for the remain ing features. If your device displays a me ssage that t he memory is full, delete some of the informat ion stored in the s hared me mory. Access codes The security code helps to p rotect your device ag ainst unauthorised use. The p reset code is 12345. You can create and chan ge the code, and set the device to request the code. Keep the code secret and in a safe place sepa rate from your device. If you forget the code and your device is locked, yo ur device will require service. The PIN code supplied wi th the SIM card protects the card against unauth orised use. T h e PIN2 co de supplied with some SIM cards is required to access certain services. If you enter the PIN or PIN2 code inc orrectly three times in succession, you are asked for the PUK or PUK2 code. If you do not hav e them, contac t your se rvice provi der. The module PIN is required to access the information in the security module of your SI M card. The s igning PI N may be required for the digital si gnature. Calls Make and answer a call To make a call, enter the phone nu mber, including the country code and area code if nece ssary. Press the call key to call the number. Scroll up to increase or down to decrease the volume of the ea rpiece or headset du ring t he phone call. T o a n s w e r a n i n c o m i n g c a l l , p r ess the call key. To reject the call without a nswering, press the en d key. Loudspeaker If available, you may select Loudsp. or Normal to use the loudspeaker or the earpiece of the phone during a c all. Diallin g shortcuts To assign a phone number to one of the number keys, 2 to 9, s el ect Menu > Contacts > Sp eed dial s , scroll to a des ir ed nu mber , an d se lec t Assi gn . Enter the desired phone number, or selec t Search and a saved contact. To switc h the speed dialli ng function on, select Menu > Sett ings > Call > Spee d dialling > On . Write text Text mod es To enter tex t (for example, wh en writing mess ages) you can use tradit ional or p redictive tex t input. When you write text , press a nd hold Opt io ns to switch between tradition al text input, indicated by , and predictive text input, indicated by . Not all languages are supported by predicti ve text input. The character cases are indicated by , , and . To change the character case, press # . T o c h a n g e f r o m t h e letter to number mode, indi cated by , press a nd hold # , and select Number m ode . To chang e from the n umber to th e letter mo de, pr ess and ho ld # . To set th e writing lang uage, s elect Options > Writing language . Traditio nal text inpu t Press a number key, 2-9, re peatedly until the desired characte r appears. Predicti ve te xt inpu t Predictive text input is base d on a built-in dictionary to which y ou can also add new wor ds. 1 Start writ ing a word, using the keys 2 to 9 . Press each key only once for one letter. 2 To confirm a word, scr oll right or add a sp ace. • If the word is not correct, press * repeatedly, an d select the word from the list. • If the ? cha racter is displayed af ter the word, the word you intended to write is not in the dictionary. Navigate the menus The phone func tions are grouped into men us. Not a ll menu functions or option it ems are described here. In the standby mode, select Me nu and the desired menu and submenu. Select Exi t or Bac k to exit the current level of menu. Press the end key to return to the standby mode directly. Mes sag ing You can read , write, send, a nd save text, mu ltimedia, audio, and flash messages , and e-ma il. The mes saging services can only be used if your network or service provider supports them. Text and mult imedia mess ages You can crea te a message a nd optionally a ttach, for example, a picture. Your ph one au toma tically chan ges a text messag e to a multimedia messa ge when a file is attached. Text messages Your de vice supports te xt me ssages beyond th e limit for a single me ssage. Lon ger messages are sen t as two or more messa ges. Your serv ice provid e r may char ge a ccor din gly. Characters with accents, ot her marks, or some language options take more sp ace, an d limit the number of characters that can be se nt in a sin gle messa ge. To send messages, the corre ct message centre number must be stored in your device. No rmally, this n umber is set by default throug h your SIM card. To set the nu mber manually, select Menu > Messaging > Mes sage sett ings > Text me ssages > Message centres > Add centre , and enter a name and the number from the service pro vider. Mult imedia m essag es A multimedia messag e can contain text, pi ctures, and sound or video clips. Only devices that ha ve compat ible features can receive and display multimedia message s. The ap pearan ce of a messa ge may va ry depending on the receiving device. The wireless network may limit the size of MMS messa ges. If the inserted picture exceed s this limit, the device may make it smaller so that it can be se nt by MMS. Important: Exercise caution wh en ope ning messages. Messages ma y contain malici ous softwa re or ot herwise be harmful to your device or PC. Create a text or multim edia m essage 1 Select Menu > Messag ing > Create mess age > Message . 2 To add recipients, scroll to the To: field, and enter the recipient’s nu mber or e-mail address, or select Add to select recipients from th e availa ble options. Selec t Options to add recipients and subjects and to set sending options. 3 Scro ll to the Te xt: field, and enter the mes sage text. 4 To attach content t o the messag e, scroll to the attachmen t bar at the bottom of th e display a nd select the desired type of content. 5 To s end th e messa ge, pre ss Send . The messa ge type is in dicated at the top of the displa y and changes a utomatically depen ding on the content of the me ssage. Flash messages Flash messa ges are tex t messages that are inst antly displayed upon reception. 1 To w rite a flash messa ge, se lect Menu > Messaging > Crea te mess age > Flash message . 2 Enter the recipient’s phone number, write your mess age (max imum 70 char acters), and select Send . Nokia Xpress audio messages Create and s end an audio mess age using MMS in a convenient way. 1 Select Menu > Messag ing > Create mess age > Audio m essage . The voice recorder opens. 2 Rec ord your message . 3 Enter one or more phone numbers in the To : field, or select Add to retrieve a nu mber. 4 To s end the message , sele ct Se nd . Voice messages The voice mailbox is a network service to which you may need to subsc ribe. For more information, contact your service provider. Con tacts Select Menu > Contacts . You can sav e names a nd phone numbers in the ph one memory and SIM card memory. I n the phone memory, you can save contacts with numbers and text items . Names and numbers saved in the SIM card memor y are i ndicated by . To add a contact, select Names > Opt ion s > Add new contact . To add details to a contact, ensure that the memory in use is either Phon e or Ph one a nd SIM . S elect Names , scroll to the name, and select Details > Option s > Add detai l . To search for a contact, select Nam es , and scroll through the list of contacts or en ter the first lett ers of the name. To copy a cont act between the phone memory a nd SIM card memory , select Names , scroll to the contact, and select Option s > Copy con tact . To select the SIM card or phone memory for your contacts , to select how t he names and numbers in contacts are displayed, and to view the me mory capacity for contacts, select Settings . You can send a nd receive a pe rson' s contact information as a business card from a com patible devi ce that sup ports the vC ard stan dard. Call log To view the information on yo ur calls, mess ages , data, and synchronisa tion, s elect Menu > Log and from th e available op tions. Settings Profiles Your phon e has va rious sett ing groups calle d profi les, which you can customise with ringing tone s for different events and environments. Select Menu > Settings > Profil es , the desired pr ofile, and from the following options: Activ ate — to activate the s elected profile Person alise — to change the profile settings Time d — to set the profile to be active for a certain time . When the time set for the profile expires, the pr evious prof ile that w as no t time d becomes ac tive. Tones You can change th e tone settin gs of the select ed active pro fil e. Display To view or adjust the wallpaper , font size, or other features related to the phon e display, select Menu > Settings > Display . Date and time Select Menu > Settings > Date and time . To set the dat e and time, select Date and time se ttings . To set the formats for date and tim e, select Date and time for mat sett ings . To set t he phone to up date the time an d date automa tically according to the current time zone, se lect Auto-up date of date & tim e (network service). To allocate one phone function to the right or left s election key, select Rig ht selection key or Le ft se lec tion key . To select sh ortcut fu nction s for the scroll key, select Navigation ke y . Scroll to the desired direction, and select Change or Assign and a function from the list. Synchronisation an d backup Select Menu > Sett ings > S ync and b ack up and from the following: Phone sw itch — Synchronise o r copy selected data between your phone and anot her phone using Bluetooth techno logy. Create backup — Create a backup of selected data to the memory card or to an external device. Rest ore from backup — Select a backup file sto red on the m e m o r y c a r d o r o n a n e x t e r n a l d e v i c e a n d r e s t o r e i t t o t h e phon e. Select Opt ions > Details for informatio n about the selected bac kup file. Connectivit y Your p hone has several feat ures th at allow you to connect to other devices to tr an smit and receive data. Bluetooth wirele ss techno logy Bluetooth technology a llows you t o connect your phone, using ra dio waves, to a compatible Bl uetooth device with in 10 metres (32 feet).
