Making yo ur first call 1 Install and charge the batter y (see “Battery Information” on page 7). 2 Gi ve PWR a long press to swit ch on your ph one . W ait for t he si gnal indi cat ion to ap pea r . 3 Enter the area code (if needed) and the ph one number , then press SEND . 4 T o end th e call, press END or close the cover . Note : If you make a m istake enterin g the phone nu mber , to cle ar th e las t digit g ive CLR a short press, or t o clear th e enti re numbe r , g ive CLR a long pres s or press EN D . Changi ng t he Profi le (s oun d se ttings ) Y ou ca n easily change t he profile, wh ich is a s et of predefined sound and alert settin gs. (This is simpler and quicker than changing these sound settings using the men u.) • Press repeatedly until the profile you want is next to the pointer , then press and hold the Profile key (or press OK) . See page 18 for a description of the Pr ofiles. Note: Y ou cannot change the profile when in a call. (See “Active Cover (Men u 3 1 2)” on page 40). Note: T o prolong the life of your phone, hold it in one hand while opening the cover with the other hand. • Y ou ca n end a call by closing the c over . Th e Ready scre en Whe n yo u see t he term “R eady s cre en” in this manual, it means the phone’s display is free of phone numbers, names, and me nu items. Many of the functions require tha t you start with the “Ready screen” . T o do this: • Give END a (short) press, or CLR a long pr ess. (Don’t press END to return to idl e when in a call because this will end the call.) Status indic ators such a s KEY GUARD ACT IVE , ROAMING , or the name of the profile you’re using may appear on the Ready screen an d can’t b e cleared. 6 6 6 6 Disp lay Indic ators Signa l s tren gth i n dicat ion A cellular phone s ends and receives radio sign als. As with a ll radio equipment, the quality of r adio reception depends on the s tren gth of the radio s ign al i n th e ar ea wher e you are ope rat ing yo ur phone. The strength of th e cellular signal is shown by the ve rtical bar on the left- hand side of the display . The higher th e bar , the stronger the signal at your present location, and the more likely you are to get good call quali ty . When NO SERVICE is displayed, the phone is either outside of th e cellular ser vice area or re strict ed fr om ente ring servic e, and calls cannot be made o r received. If the signal is poor and you are using th e phone in a building, you may get better reception n ear a window . IMPORT ANT! Th e phon e can m ake an d receive c alls only w hen: • It is s witched on, and • It is located in the cellular service area, and the radio s ignal strength is adequate. To make an emergency call , see "Emergen cy Calls" on page 7 5.

U se only batteries approved by the pho ne manu factu rer an d rech arge your ba ttery only with the ch argers approved by the manu facturer . See “Im portant Battery information” on page 1 0. Note: A new batte ry must be c harged before use. Inst alling the Ba ttery 1 Slide the battery cover down slightly , then lift it off. 2 Put the battery in the space on the back of the phone. Align the battery contacts with the contacts in the phone. 3 Put the battery cover i n the guides on th e phone, then slide it into position. 1 2 3
8 8 8 8 Battery Informat ion Charg i n g the Batte ry 1 Connect th e lead from the charger to the bottom of your phone, or place the phone in the Compact Desktop Ch arging Stand (op tional accessory). Note: See the “Accessories” section starting on page 6 8 for more charging options. 2 Plug the ch arger into a standard wall outlet. When cha rging starts, the segments of th e battery indicator scr oll and the phone beeps on ce. After the segments o f the battery indicator stop s crol- ling and all segments are dis played, th e battery is f ully ch arged. Charging times ( s pecified below) depend on the charge r used. 3 Disconnect the charger from the pow er outlet and phone. Y ou ca n use the phone during charging, but charging is reduced for the duration of the call. Note: In a call, charging stops comple tely if you are using the Standard T ravel Charger (A CP-7 U). If the battery is too hot or cold, the charging may be interrupted until th e battery reach es its nor- mal operating temperature. 9 9 9 9 Battery Informatio n T alk and Standby times Battery operation tim es depend greatly on how you use the ph one, as we ll as on the cover age of the network and n etwork parameters set by the wireless service provider . Typica l times are shown in the ta ble. Ba ttery Low w arn ing The phone says BA TTERY LOW and gives a warning tone when th e battery charge is low and on ly a few minutes of ta lk time remain. The repetition r ate of th e battery low warnings depends on the remaining battery capacity and the bat tery condition. When the batter y charge is too low for the phone to work, the phon e displ ays RECHARGE BA TTERY , then beeps, th en shuts itself of f. Charge the battery as described earlier in this section. Impo rtant Batte ry i nform atio n • Use only batteries and chargers approved by the phone manufacturer . • When a charger is not in u se, disconnect it f rom th e pow er so ur ce . Do n ot l ea ve t he b at- tery connected to a charger for longer than a week, since over charging may shorten its life . • If left unused, a fully charged batter y may lose some if its charge over time. • Never use an y charger or ba ttery that is damaged or w orn out. • Use the battery only for its in tended purpose. • Do not short circuit the battery . Accidental short circuiting can occur when a m etallic object (e.g. coin , cli p or pen) causes direct 2 1
11 11 11 11 Battery Informatio n connection of th e an d - t erminals of the battery (metal strips on the side of the battery), for exam ple, when you carry a spare battery in your pocket or purse. Short circuit- ing the ter minals may damage the batter y or the connecting object. • Leaving the battery in hot or cold places, suc h as in a closed car in summer or winter condi- tions, reduces the capacity and lif etime of the bat tery . Always tr y to keep th e battery bet wee n 59°F an d 77° F (1 5°C an d 25°C ). A phone with a hot or cold batt e ry may tem- porarily not work, even if the ba ttery is fully charged, or it may tem porarily not charge. Li-Ion battery performance is par ticular ly limited in temperatures below 32 °F (0°C). • T emperature extr emes affect the ability of your battery to ch arge; allow i t to cool down or warm up fi rst. • When the batte ry is not i n use, store it uncharged in a cool, dark and dry place. • The battery is a sealed unit with n o service- able parts. Do not attempt to open the case. • The battery can be ch arged and discharged hundreds of times but will even tually wear out. When th e operating time is shorter than normal, it is time to buy a new battery . • Do not dispose of a batter y in a fire! • Dispose of used batteries in a ccordance with any local laws and regulations.

Swi tchin g the Pho ne on and o ff • Press the PWR key for about one second. If K e yguard is active, you need to deactivate it before you can turn the phone off. If the display show s LOC KED , press MENU and enter your 4- digit lock code. We l c o m e n o t e Y our dealer may have stored a wel come note in your phone (such as the deale r’s name). If n ot, your phone number is displayed. If you want to replace the dealer’s wel come note with your own, see “Welco me Note ( Menu 3 14)” on pag e 40. Note: The we lcome note is specific to y our currently se lec ted p hone nu mber . Se le ctin g a netw o rk Y our phone operates on specific networks and som et im es it must choose which system to u se. This can ha pp en, fo r ex amp le, i f y o u l e av e th e area w here you ha ve signe d up for ser vice. If you want your ph one to work only in certain types of n etworks (f or exampl e, to take advantage of certain billin g agreem ents betwe en systems), you can specify this u sing “Carrier Sel ection (Menu 5 1 1) “. See page 4 2.

If you m ake a mistake dialing, press CLR to er ase digits one by one. Press and hold CLR or press END to clear the wh ol e display . A phone symbol appears on the dis pl ay . T he call is connected w hen the phone number disappears from the display a nd CALL app e ars . For international calls : Y ou can en ter a ‘ ’ at t he begin ning of a number by pressing !! . Then ente r the country code and number , then press SEND . The ‘ ’ e xpands to the international dialing code prefix. To dial a nu mber stored in the Phone Bo ok : From the Re ady screen pr ess or until th e Phone Book en try is displayed, then press SEND . To make an emerge ncy call : See "Eme rge ncy Calls" on page 75. NO SER VICE appears and the phone beeps if you try to make a call when your phone is outside the cellular service ar ea. CALL NO T ALL OWED appears if you try t o make a c all that is r estricted (s ee “ Allo we d Call s (Menu 5 1 2) ” on page 45 ), or the ph one is lock ed. If you receive a call w hen you’re tryin g to make a call, the incoming call com es through and the outgoing call is cancelled. A s wit h any other radio transmitting device, avoid unnece ssary contact with the antenna when the p hon e is switche d o n. Conta ct wi th t he antenn a affects call qualit y and may cause t he phone to operate at a higher po we r level than otherwise needed. W ARNING! Do n ot switch on the phone when wireless phon e use is prohibit ed or when it may cause int erference or dang er . Ending a call • Press END , or • Close the cove r , or • If you’re u sing the h eadset (HDC-3P), press the answer/end button on the headset cord. Note : If you give EN D a lo ng pr ess , yo u’ ll a cti v at e K eyguard (see “K eygu ard” on page 17). Answ ering a cal l • Press SEND , or any key ex cept END or PWR , or • Open the cover if Active Cover is On. (S e e "Active Cover (Menu 3 12)" on page 40). Note: T o prolong the life of your phone, hold it in one hand while opening the cover with the other hand. T o answer a waiting call (normally indicated b y a beep), pre ss SEN D . Note: Call W aiting is a network feature. Y ou need to subscribe to it through your s ervice provider . • T o stop the ringin g without answering the call, press PWR briefly or press END .

Make sure the antenna is fully extended during the call. Note: If K eyguard is active, a call can only be answered by pressing SEND , including when you are using the headset. When ther e is an incomin g call CAL L flashes on the dis- play and the LED indi cator flashes . The p hone’s ringing sound (a nd vibration) depen ds on the Prof ile you’r e using. See “Sele cting the Prof ile” on page 18. Y ou can answer a call an y time, even while using K eyguard, Phone Book or menu functions. If you don’ t answer a call, the message 1 MISSED CAL L or ‘n’ MISS ED CA LLS appears on the display. Press CLR to clear th e display. If you have subscribed to voicemail, the call w ill be transferred to your voice m ailbox (see "Message Waiting (V oicemail)" on page 65). Or, pr ess OK , or to v iew the Mis s ed C al ls List. The phone automatically stores the ca ller’s number (if available) in the Missed Calls list (se e “Missed Calls (Menu 2 3)” on pa ge 35). Th e list first tells you the number of new numbers in the lis t. Wa it a fe w se co nds for th e mos t re cent num- ber to appear or press to scroll the list. Ca lling Line I denti fica tio n If you are a su bscriber to a network that supports Calling Line Identification your phone may dis- play the caller’ s number or n ame when th e phone rings. (The name appears only if the name and number are stor ed in the Ph one Book). For more CALL

The mo re information you store pe r entry , the fe wer entrie s you can have. The phone holds 75 entri es if the average entry size is abou t 1 0 digits and 12 ch aracters. ALL CA LLS shows the total amount of time spent on calls since the timer was last reset, for the phone number you are using. LI FE T IM ER shows the total amount of time you have spent on calls in hours and minutes. This number cannot be reset. (Y ou can also select L ife Timer by pressing the # key for about 4 seconds.) Note: In order to have two different te lephone numbe rs , you mu st subs cribe to them through your cellular operator(s). Note: If only one phone num ber is programmed into your phone, y ou’ll on ly see th at numb er in this m enu. The phon e can’t use both numbers at the same time and you ca n’t change the n umber du ring a c all. If your phone is set to your first number , you can only receive calls via that number . Y ou may be able to forward calls from your second nu mber to your first number so yo u don’t miss any calls, if this se rvice is available from your cellul ar service prov ider . Autom atic Answe r (Menu 3 1 0) Note: This feature applies only if the phone is in a handsfre e car kit, or a headset is conne cted. With Automatic Answer set to On, the phone autom atically answers af ter 4 seconds. Autom atic Re dial (M enu 3 1 1) Sometimes the cellular network is busy , e.g. there are too many calls for the network to handle, and your call can’t go through. Y ou get a SYSTEM BUSY ... mes sage (and sometime s a tone such as a fast busy signal). If Automatic Redial is set to O n, the phone automatically trie s 3 more times to connect the call. If the call connects, the ph one beeps to notify you.

Ca rrie r Sele ctio n (M enu 5 1 1) Y our phone uses a ca rrier network ( also called a cellular system) to make and receive calls. Generally you sign up f or service with a par ticular carrier (your cellula r service provider). This is called your “Home system” and usually you want the phone to use it. But there m ay be times w hen you can’t or don’t use your Home sy stem (f or exampl e when you travel) . Then, there’s usua lly more than one network your phone can work in. But which one

A simple fact to know: All cellular s ystems are either type “A” or “B” . So your “Home system” is either an “A” or “ B” syst em. To find out your system type, ask your cellu lar service provider . Y ou n eed your security code to enter this menu. Once you have entered the m enu, you can choose the option you want (described below). Press to m ove the pointer to th e option you wa nt. Press OK to se lect it. Pref erre d - Y our dealer can program a list of “preferred” networks into y our ph one. If your dealer has done th is, when you choose Preferr ed your phone looks first for your home system, then a network in the preferred list, then a n etwork of the s ame “t ype” (A or B) as your ho me syst em, then a network of the opposite “type” as your home system . If only the details for one card ar e entered, there is no nee d to use th e Select feature. But, if you then add the details of another card, the secon d card will automatically become the card in use. Only one card can be active at a time. Y ou may enter a car d name for each card, but this is optional. This name is only used for card identification on the phone display , and has no effect on th e sending sequence. ‘Card A ’ and ‘Card B’ will be r eplaced by the nam es you enter . Loc k P hon e ( Men u 6 ) When you lock your phone, you ca nnot make calls, except to the number stored in Phon e Book location 75 and to the emergency number pro- grammed into your phone. Short - causes the ph one to bee p 3 times when you receive a tex t or voice messa ge. Lo ng - causes the phon e to beep for 15 minutes when you receive a voice or te xt message. To stop the beeping, press CLR . Vibra O nly - causes the phon e to vibrate when you re ceive a voice or text messa ge. Off - means the phone won’t beep (or vibrate) when you receive messages. Switchin g On/Of f When you firs t turn you r ph one on, REMEMB ER AIRT IM E CARD DUE and a date appear . This r eminds you that this is the date you must purchase additional airtime in order to retain your current phone n umber and cellular service. The date automatically updates once you add units to your phone. UNITS and the n umber of u nits currently in your phone appear after another few second pause. Once you have placed a call your phone displays the charge rate of units per minute, as well as a timer which tracks the duration of the call expre ssed in min utes and seconds. Y our phone has a grace pe riod that begins when you make a call and ex t ends for an amount of time set by TRACFONE pr epaid service. The grace period ex ists only on outgoing calls. During the gr ace period you a re not charged f or the call. Once th e grace p eriod expires, the charge rate of units per minute is replaced by only the n umber of units remaining in your phone (indicated as U ). When there ar e only ten minutes of ta lk time left in your phone, your phone sounds a beep that cont in ues on ce a mi nut e. If you ha ng up b efo re the amount of time in you r phone e xpires, your phone continues to be ep once a m inute during the next call. Important Note: If you try to make a call and there are no units left in your phone, your phone beep s and displays the me ssage TIME T ANK EM PTY . Y ou may th en use your computer to m ake and r eceive calls, and to send a nd receive data m essages s uch as emails. Follow these steps bef ore using Data M ode: 1 Ensure your phone is swi tched o n, and that the bat tery has enough char ge for the duration of your data calls. 2 Ensure that you are receiving a strong signal (see signal strength indicator on the display). 3 Ensure that you r computer is switched on, and is fitted w ith a data card. 4 Connect the data cable to the data card, and to your phone. In a data call, th e keys on th e phone don’ t work except for END ; when not in a call, all keys work. Also, the m icrophone and earpiece don’t work in a dat a call. Important! W hen you are in Data Mode , do not switch off the phone. Do not move the phone, or use it in a moving vehicle (data will be lost if you move from one cell to anothe r).
