The following phone manufacturer approved bat teries are available for your phone: • NiMH batteries: BMH-1 Standard Battery, BMH- 1V Vibrating Batter y • Li-Ion batteries: BL J-1 Slim Battery, BL J-4 Ultra Extended Battery. Battery Charge Indication The current level of battery charge is in dicated by the vertical bar on the right of the phone display. The higher the bar, the more power left in the battery. When the batter y is fully charged, the en tire bar is displayed. When the battery charge level is low and only a few minutes of talk time remain, a warning tone will be heard an d the text BATTERY LOW will be repeated at regular in tervals on the display. When the battery charge level becomes too low for the phone to operate, the text RECHARGE BATTER Y is briefly displayed (accompanied by a warning tone) and the phone automa tically switches itself off. Note: If the tones have been turned off, only the displa y texts will appear. Recharging a Battery Connect your phone directly to a charger or place it in the desktop stand (CGD-8) with the pho ne switched on or off. Segments of the battery in- dicator bar will start scrolling. The text C HAR GING will be briefly dis- played if the phone is switched on. • If you us e any oth er charge r than ACH -6, LC H-6 or LCM-1 and the phone is provided with a plastic cap protecting the system connector, first remove the cap and then connect the charger. After charging, re- place the cap. • In some vehicles, the i gnition must be on in order to charge the phone with the cigarette lighter adapter. The battery is fully charged when the scrolling stops, the bar appears en- tirely, and the tex t BATTERY FUL L is briefly displayed.
57  1998 Nokia Mobile Phones. All Rights Reserved. Note: The text and bar indicator are not shown if the phone has been connected to the charger with the power switched off. Notes for Using the Batteries • Note that a new NiMH battery’s full performance is achieved only af- ter two or three complete charge an d discharge cycles! • Never use any charger or battery which is damaged or worn ou t. • Using the phone near the network’s base station consumes less power. The operation times of a battery a re greatly affected e.g. by the signal strength of the cellular network and the parameters set by th e net- work o perato r. • Battery charging time s depend on the r emaining battery charge and the type of battery and charger used. T he battery can be charged and discharged hundr eds of times but it will eventually wear out. When the operating time (talk-time and stan dby time) is noticeably shorter than normal, it is time to buy a n ew battery. • Use only batteries appr oved by the phone manufacturer and recharge your battery only with the chargers approved by the manufacturer. When a charger is not in use, disconnect it from the power source. Do not leave the battery conn ected to a charger f or longer than a week, since overcharging may shorten its lif e. If left u nused, a fully charge battery will discharge itself over time. • Use the battery only for its intended pu rpose. • For good operation times when using an NiMH battery, discharge the battery from time to time by leaving your p hone switched on until it turns itself off. Do not attempt to discharge the battery by any other means. • Temperature extremes will affect the ability of your battery to charge: allow it to cool down or warm up firs t. • Do not short circuit the battery. Accidental sh ort circuiting can occu r when a metallic object (coin, clip or pen) causes direct connection of the and - terminals of the battery (metal strips on the back of th e battery) for example wh en you carry a spare battery in your pocket or purse. Short circuiting the terminals may damage the batter y or the connecting object.
58  1998 Nokia Mobile Phones. All Rights Reserved. • Leaving the battery in hot or cold places, such as in a closed car in summer or winter conditions, will reduce the capacity and lifetime of the battery. Always try to keep the battery betw een 15 ° C and 25 ° C (59 F and 77 F). A phone with a h ot or cold battery may temporarily not work, even when the battery is fully charged. Ni MH batteries per- formance is particularly limited in temperatures below -10 ° C (14 F) and Li-Ion batteries performa nce in temperatures below 0 ° C (32 F). • Batteries must be recycled or disposed of properly . Must not be disposed of in municipal waste. • Do not dispose of batter ies in a fire! Access Codes There are several access codes that are used by you r phone and its SIM card. These codes help you to pr otect your phone and SIM card against unauthorised use. When requested f or any of the access codes ex plained below, key in the appropriate code (displayed as a sterisks) and press ( OK ).
