Battery informati o n 76 Copyright © 2005 Nokia. All rights reserved. 15. Battery information ■ Charging and discharging Your device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The full performance of a new batte ry is achieved only after two or thre e complete charge and discharge cycles. The battery can be charged and discharged hundred s of times, but it will e ventua lly wea r out. When the talk and standby t imes are notic e ably shorter than no rmal, replace the battery. Use only Nokia approved batteries, and recharge your battery only with Nokia approved chargers designated for this device. If a replacement battery is being used for the first time or if the battery ha s not be en used for a prolonge d period, it may be nece ssar y to co nnect th e charger then disconnect and re connect it to begin charging the battery. Unp lug th e cha rger fr om th e elec trical plug and the device when not in use. Do not leave a fu lly charged battery conne cted to a charger, since overch arging may shorten its lifetime. If left unused, a fully charged battery will lose its charge ove r time . If the batte ry is complete ly discharged , it may take a few minutes before the charging indicator appe ars on the display or before any calls can be made. Use t he batt ery on ly for its intende d purpose. Never use any charger or battery that is damaged. Do not short- circuit the ba ttery. Accidental short-circuitin g can occur when a m etallic objec t such as a co in, clip, or pen causes direc t co nnecti on of the positive ( ) and negative (-) terminals of the battery. (The se look like meta l strips on the battery. ) This might ha ppen, for exam ple, wh en you carry a spare battery in your pock et or purse. Short-circuiting th e terminals may dam age the batte ry or the con nectin g obj ect. Leaving th e battery in h ot or cold places, such as in a close d c a r in summ er or winter condit ions, will reduce the capa city a nd lifet ime o f the battery. Always try to keep the batte ry between 15° C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F) . A device with a hot or cold battery ma y not work temporarily, even whe n the battery i s fully charged. Batte ry performance is particularly limited in tempe ratures well below freezing. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire as they may explode . Batteries may also explode if damaged. Dispose of batteries a ccording to local regulations. Please recycle when possible. Do not dispose as household wa ste.

These limits are part of comp rehensive guid elines and estab lish permitted leve ls of RF energy for the general population. The guidelines were developed by independe nt scientific organizations through pe riodic and thorough evaluatio n of scient ific studies. The guidelin es include a subs tantial safety margin de signed to assure the safety of all persons, regardless of age and he al th. The exposure standard for mobile devices employs a u nit of measu remen t know n as th e Speci fic Absorption Rate, or SAR. The SAR limit state d in the internat ional guidelin es is 2.0 watts/kilogram (W/kg)*. Tests for
Additional safety information 83 Copyright © 2005 Nokia. All rights reserved. SAR are conducted using standard operating po sitions with t he device transmitting at its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. Although the SAR is determined at the highest certified power level, t he actual SAR of t he device while operating can be well below the maximum value. This is because the device is designed to operate at multiple power levels so as to use only the po wer requ ired to reach th e network. In general, the closer you are to a base station, the lower the power output of the device. The highest SAR value for this device when tested for use at the ear is 0.86 W/kg. SAR values may vary depending on national reporting and testing requirements and the netw ork band. Use of device accessories and enhancements may result in different SAR values . Additional SAR information may be provide d under product information at www.nokia-asia.com. * The SAR limit for mobile devices used by the public is 2. 0 W/kg averaged over 1 0 grams of body tissue. The guidelines incorporate a substant ial margin of safety to give additional protection for the public and to account for any variations in measurements. SAR values may vary depending on national reporting req uirements and the network band.
