Attaching the batter y T o a ttach the battery , place it on the back of the phone as shown and slide it t oward the top of the phone until it c licks into place. Batter y charging Y our phon e is powered by a rechargeable NiMH or Li- Ion battery . No te that a n ew NiMH battery ’ s full performance is achieved on ly after two or three complete ch arge an d discharge cycl es. For charging times , see ‘Cha rging times’ on page 68. How to charge your ba ttery Connect the lead from t he charger to the bottom of your phone or to a charging stand. Then plug the charger into a standard wall outle t. When the b a t tery is c harging, the battery s t rength indica tor on the right side of the display scrolls. Note: Whe n you charge the batte ry for t he first t ime, the battery stren gth indicator will not scroll the ent ire time; this is normal. Pro blem s ch argin g If your phone displays Not ch arg ing , charging is suspended. Check that the battery is con n ected to an appro ved charging device. If the ba ttery is very hot or cold, wait for a w hile; chargin g will auto matically re sume after the batte ry is

When the cha rge indicators stop scrolling, your phone is considered fu lly charged. However , a slight in crease in charge may occur if you leave your phone connect e d t o the charger . When is a good t ime to cha rge? Y ou can char ge anytime , but reme mber tha t when y our phone displays Battery lo w , yo u only h a ve a couple of minute s of talk time left. Can I make calls whil e cha rging? Y es, but de pending on th e charge r use d, your batt ery may not charge durin g a call. Discha rging Ni MH batt eries For good ope ra tion ti mes, discharge NiMH batteries from time to time by le a v ing your phone switched on until it turns i ts elf off (or by using the battery discharge facility of any approved accessory available for y our phone). Removing the battery Note: Switch off the phone before removing the battery! 1 Press and hold the button at the top of the battery . 2 Slide the ba ttery toward the bottom of the pho ne. 3 Lift the battery off the phone.
5 Important battery information • Note that a new battery’s full performance is achieved only after two or three complete charge and discharge c ycles! • The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times but it will eventually wear out. When the operating time (talk time and standby time) is noticeably shorter than normal, it i s time to buy a new battery . • Use only batteries approved by the phone manufacturer and recharge your battery only with the chargers approved by the manufacturer . • W hen a charger is n ot in u se, disc onnec t it f rom t he power sour ce. Do not leave the battery connect ed to a charger for longer than a week, since overc h ar ging may shorten its life. If le ft unu s ed a fully charged batter y will discharge it s elf over time. • (NiMH batteries only) For good operation times, discharg e the battery from time to time by leaving your phone switched on until it turns itself off (or by using t he batt er y discharge fa c ility of any approved acces sory available for your phone). Do not attempt to discharge the batte ry by any other means. • T emperature extremes will affect the ability of your battery to charge: allow it to cool down or warm up first. • Use the battery only for its intended purpose. • Never use any char ger or battery which is damaged or worn out. • Do not short circuit the battery . Accidental short circuiting can occur when a metallic object (coin, clip, or pen) causes direct connection of the and - terminals of the battery (metal strips on the back of the bat tery), for example when you carry a spare battery in your pocket or purse. Short circuiting the terminals may damage the battery or the connect ing obj e ct. • Leaving the batte ry in hot or cold places , such as in a closed car in summer or winter conditions, will reduce the capacity and lifetime of the batter y . Always try to keep the batter y between 59º F and 77º F (15º C and 25º C). A phone with a hot or cold battery may temporarily not wor k, even when the battery is fully charged. NiMH batteries’ per for manc e i s p artic ula rl y li mite d in te mpe rat ures be low 14º F (-1 0º C). Li-Ion batte ries’ performance is particularly limited in temperatures below 32º F (0º C) . • Do not dispose of batteries in a fire! • Di sp ose of us ed ba tte ri es i n acc ord an ce w ith an y loca l re gula ti ons .

Radio frequency (RF) signals Y ou r wireless handheld portable telephone is a low power radio transmitter and receiver . When it is ON, it receives and also sends out radio frequency (RF) signals. In August, 1996, th e Federal C ommunications Commission (FCC) adopted RF exposure guidelines with safety levels for handheld wireless phones. Those guidelines are consi s tent with safety standards previ ously set by both U. S. and int ernati onal stan dard s b odies: ANSI C95 . 1 (1992)*, NCRP Repor t 86 (1986)*, ICN IRP (1996)*. Those standards were based on comprehens ive and periodic evaluat ions of the relevant scientific literature. For example, over 120 scientists, engineers, and physicians from universities, gover n ment health agencies and industry reviewed the available body of r ese ar ch to develop the ANSI Standard (C95.1). The design of your phone complies with the FCC guidelines (and those standards). *Am erican Nati onal Standa rds I nsti t u te, N ationa l Co uncil o n Ra diatio n Protection and Measurements; International Comm is sion on N on- Ionizing Radiation Protection.
77 Care and maintenanc e Y ou r phone is a product of s uper ior design and craftsmanship and should be treated with care. The suggestions below will help you to fulfill any warranty obligations and allow you to enjoy this product for many years. When using your phone, battery , charger , OR any ac ces sor y: • Kee p it and all its parts and accessories out of small childr e n’s reach. • Kee p it dry . Precipitation, humidity and liquids contain minerals that will corrode electronic c i rcuit s. • Do not use or store it in dusty , dirty areas as its moving parts can be damaged. • Do not store it in hot a reas. High temper atures can shorten the life of electronic devic es, damage batteries, and warp or melt certain plastics. • Do not store it in cold areas. Wh en the phone warms up (to its normal operating temperature), moisture can form inside the phone, which may damage the phone's electronic circuit boards. • Do not attempt to open it. Non-expert handling of the device may damage it. • Do not drop, knock or shake it. Rough handling can break inter nal c ircuit b oard s. • Do not use harsh che m ic als, cleaning s olv ents, or strong detergents to clean it. Wipe it with a soft cloth slightly dampened in a mild soap-and-water solution. • Do not paint it. P ain t can clog t he device’s moving parts and prevent proper operation. • Use only the supplied or an approved replacement antenna. Unauthorized antennas, modifications or attachments could damage the phone and may violate regulations governing radio devices. • If the phone, battery , charger , or any acc essory is not working properly , take i t to your nearest qualified service facility . The personnel there will assist you, and if necessary , ar range for ser vice .
