How to charge your ba ttery Connect the lead from t he charger to the bottom of your phone or to a charging stand. Then plug the charger into a standard wall outle t. When the b a t tery is cha rging, the battery s trengt h indicator on the right side of the screen s crolls upwards. Note: Whe n you charge the batte ry for the firs t t ime, the battery stren gth indicator will not scroll the ent ire time; th is is normal.

Accidental s hor t circuiting can occur when a metallic object (coin, clip, or pen) causes direct connection of the and - terminals of the battery (metal strips on the back of the bat tery), for example when you carry a spare battery in your pocket or purse. Shor t circuiting the terminals may damage the battery or the connect ing object. • Leaving the batte ry in hot or cold places , such as in a clos ed car in summer or winter conditions, will reduce the capacity and lifetime of the batter y . Always try to keep the battery bet ween 59º F and 77º F (15º C and 25º C). A phone with a hot or cold battery may temporarily not wor k, even when the battery is fully charged. NiMH batteries’ performance is particularly limited in temperatures below 14º F (-1 0º C). Li-Ion batteries’ per formance is particularly limited in temperatures below 32º F (0º C) . • Do not dispose of batteries in a fire! • Di sp ose of u sed ba tteri es in a ccor dan ce wit h an y loc al r egu lati ons .

79 Radio frequency (RF) signals THIS MODEL PHONE MEETS THE GOVERN MENT' S REQ UIREM EN TS FOR EXPOSU RE T O RADIO W AVES. Y ou r wireles s phone is a radio transmitter and receiver . It is designed and manufactured not to exceed the emission limits for exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy set by the Federal Communications Commission of the U.S. Government. These limits are par t of compre- hensive guidelines and es tabli sh per mitted levels of RF energy for the general population. The guidelines are based on standards that were developed by independent scientific organizati on s through periodic and thorough evaluation of scientific studies. The standards include a substantial safety margin designed to assure the saf e t y of all persons, regardless of age and health. The exposure standard for wireless mobile phones employs a unit of measu rement known a s the Specif i c Ab so rpti o n Rate, or S AR. The SAR limit set by the FCC is 1.6W /kg. * Tests for SAR are c onducted usin g standard operating positions accepted by the FCC with the ph one tra nsmitt ing at its hi ghest cer tifi ed powe r level i n all tested f requen cy band s. Al thou gh th e SAR is determ ined at t he high est c ert ified p ower level, the actual SAR level of the phone while operating can be well below the maximum value. This is because the phone is designed to operate at multiple power levels so as to use only the powe r required to rea ch the n etwor k. In gene ral, the closer you are to a wire less ba se station antenna, the lower the power output. Before a phone model is a vailable for sale t o the public, it mus t be tested and certified to the FCC that it does n ot exceed the limit established by the government-adopted requirement for safe expos ure. The tests are performed in positions and locations (for ex amp le , at th e ear and wo rn o n the body) as r equir ed by the F C C for e ach model. The hig hest SAR value for this mod el phone as reported to the FCC when tested for us e at th e e ar is 1 . 49 W /kg, and when worn on t he body , as des cribed in this user guide, is 1.45 W / kg. (B ody -w or n m eas ur eme nt s d if fe r among phone models, depend ing upon a vai l ab le ac ce ss ori es a nd F CC requirements). While there may be differences between the SAR levels of var ious phones and at various positions, they all meet the government requirement. The FCC has granted an Equipment Authorization fo r t his model phone with all reported SAR levels evaluated as in compl ianc e with the FCC RF exposure guidelines. SAR information on this model phone is on file with the FCC and can be found u nder the Display Grant section of http: //www .fcc.gov/oet/ fccid after searching on FCC ID: GMLNSD-1FW . For body worn operation , to maintain com pliance with FCC RF exp os ure guidelines, use only Nokia approved accessories. When carr ying the phone while it is on, place the phone in the specific Nokia belt-clip that has been tested for compliance.
80 Use of non-Nokia-approv ed accessories may violate FCC RF exposure guidelines and should be avoided. * In the United States and Canada, the SAR limit for mobile phones used by the public is 1.6 watts/kg (W/kg) averaged over one gram of tissue. The standard incorporates a substantial margin of safety to give additional protection for the public and to account for any variations in measurements. SAR values may vary depending on national reporting requirements and the network band. For SAR information in other regions pl e as e look under product information at http:// w ww .no kia.com .
81 Care and maintenanc e Y ou r phone is a product of superior design and craftsmanship and should be treated with care. When using your phone, battery , charger , OR any ac ces sor y: • K eep it and all its parts and accessories out of small children’s reach. • K eep it dry . Precipitation, humidity and liqu ids contain minerals that will corrode electronic c ircuits. • Do not use or store it in dus ty , dirt y areas as its moving parts can be damaged. • Do not store it in hot a reas. High temperatures can s horten t he life of electronic devic es, damage batteries, and warp or melt certain plastics. • Do not store it in cold areas. When the phone warms up (to its normal operating temperature), moisture can form inside the phone, which may damage the phone's electronic circuit boards. • Do not attempt to open it. Non-expert handling of the device may damage it. • D o not drop , knock or shak e it. Ro ugh handl ing can break int ernal circuit boards. • Do n ot use harsh chemicals, cleanin g solvents, or strong deter gents to clean it. Wipe it with a soft cloth slightly dampened in a mild soap-and-wat er solut ion. • Do not paint it. P aint can clog the device’s moving parts and prevent proper operation. • Use only the supplied antenna. Removal and replacement of the antenna by anyone other than a Nokia authorized ser vice center is an unauthorized modification and invalidates the warranty , can damage the phone, and may violate regulations covering radio devices. • If the phone, battery , charger , or any accessory is not working properly , take it to your nearest qualified service facility . The personnel th ere will assist you, and if ne ces sary , arrange for s ervice.
