Note that a new battery ’ s full performance is ach ieved only after two or three co mplete charge and discharge cycles! The battery can b e charged and discharged h undreds of time s but i t will eventually w ear out. W hen the operati ng time (talk-time and st andby time) is noticeab ly shorter than nor mal, it is time to buy a new battery . Use only batterie s approved by the phone man ufacturer and re charge your batter y only with the charger s approved by the manu facturer . Unplug the charg er when not in use. Do no t leave the ba ttery connected to a charger for longer than a w eek, since overcharging may shorten its lifetime. I f left unused a fu lly charged battery will dischar ge itself over time. Temperature extremes can affect the ability of your battery to charge. Use the battery only for its intended purpose. Never use any charger or battery w hich is damaged. Do not short-ci rcuit the ba ttery . Accidental shor t-circuiting can occur when a metallic o bject (coin, clip or pen) causes direct connection of the a nd - terminals of the battery (metal strips on the battery) for example when you carry a spare battery in your pocket or purse. S hort- circuiting the terminals may damage th e battery or t he connecting object. Leaving the batte ry in hot or co ld places, such as in a closed car in summer o r winter condition s, will reduce the capacity and life time of the battery . Always try to keep the battery between 15 ° C and 25° C (59° F and 77° F). A phone with a hot or cold battery may temporarily not wo rk, even when the battery is fully cha rged. Batteries' performance is particularl y limited in temperature s well below fre ezing.

However , certain electronic equipment may not be shielded against the RF signals fro m your wireless phone. Pa c e m a k e r s P acemaker manufacturers recommen d that a minimu m separation of 20 cm (6 inches) be maintained b etween a handheld wireless pho ne and a pacemaker to a void potential interfe rence with the p acemaker . These recommendations are consistent w ith the ind ependent researc h by and recom mendations of W ireless Technology Research. Pers ons with pacemakers:

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION 90 • Should always keep the phone more than 2 0 cm (6 inch es) from their pacema ker when the pho ne is switched on; • Should not carry the phone in a breast pocket; • Should use th e ear opposite the pacemake r to minim ise the potential for interf erence. • If you have any reason to suspe ct that interference is taking place, switch off your phone immediately . Hearing aids Some digital wireless phone s may interfe re with some hearing ai ds. In the event of such interference, you ma y want to consult your service provid er . Other medical devices Operation of any radio tr ansmitting equipment , including cellu lar phones, may interfe re with the fu nctionality of inadequately protected medical d evices. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION 92 ■ Emergency call s Important : This phone, like an y wireless phone, op erates using ra dio signals, wireless and land line networks as well as user-programme d functions. Becau se of this, conn ections in all c onditions ca n not be gua ranteed. Therefore you should never rely solely upon any wireless phone for e ssential comm unications (e.g . medical emergencies). Emergency calls m ay not be possible on all wire less phone netw orks or when certain networ k services and/or p hone features are in use. C heck with local service p roviders. To make an emerg ency call: 1. If the phone is not on, switch it on. Check fo r adequate sign al strengt h. Some networks may requi re that a v alid SIM card is properly inserted in t he phone. 2. Press as many times a s needed (e.g. to exit a call, to exi t a menu, etc.) to clear the displa y and ready the phone for calls. 3. Type in the emergency n umber for you r present loca tion (e.g. 1 12 or ot her official eme rgency number ). Emergency numbers vary b y location. 4. Press the ( Call ) key If certain features are in use, you m ay first need to turn those features off before you c an make an em ergency call. Consul t this guide and your lo cal cell ular serv ice provid er . When making an emergenc y call, remember to give all the necessary information as accurately as possible. Remember that your wireless phon e may be the only means of commu nication at the scene of an accident - do not cut off the ca ll until given permission to do so.
© 2002 Nokia Corporatio n. All rights reser ved. IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION 93 IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION ■ Certification informatio n (SAR) THIS MODEL PHONE MEETS THE EU REQUIREMENTS FOR EXPOSURE TO RADIO WA VES. Y our mobile pho ne is a radi o transmitter and receiver . It is designed an d manufactur ed not to exce ed the limits for exposure to ra dio frequency (RF) e nergy recommended by The Counci l of the European Union. These limits are pa rt of comprehensive guidelines and establish permitted l evels of RF energy for the g eneral population. Th e guidelines were developed by independent scie ntific organ isations through periodic and tho rough evaluation of scientific studies. The limits include a substantial saf ety margin designed t o assure the safety of all pe rsons, regardless of age and health. The exposure standard for mobile ph ones employs a unit of measurem ent known as the Specific Absorption R ate, or SAR. The SAR limit reco mmended by Th e Council of the Euro pean Union is 2.0 W/kg.* Tests for SA R have been conducted using stand ard operating positions with t he phone transm itting at its hig hest certified p ower level in all tested frequency ban ds. Although the SAR is d etermined at the hi ghest certified power level, the actual SAR level of the phone while operating can be well below the maxim um value. This is becau se the phone is d esigned to operate at multiple pow er levels so as to use only the power req uired to rea ch the ne twork. In gen eral, the closer you are to a base station antenna, the lower the power ou tput. Before a phone model is avai lable for sale to the public , compliance wit h the Euro pean R&TTE direct ive must be shown. This directive includes as one essential requirement th e protection of the health and the safety for the user and any other person. The high est SAR value fo r this model phone when tested for compliance against the stand ard was 0.74 W/kg. W hile there may be difference s between th e SAR levels of va rious phones and at vario us positions, they all meet the EU requi rements for RF expo sure. * The SAR limit for mobile phones used by the public is 2.0 watts/kilogram (W /kg) averaged over te n grams of tissue. The limit incorpora tes a substantial margin of safety to give addi tional protection for the public and to account for any variations in measuremen ts. SAR values may vary depending on natio nal reporting requirem ents and the network band . For SAR info rmation in other regions pl ease look unde r product info rmation at www .nokia.com.
