Facts about cellu lar transmission 34 © 2001 Nokia Mobile Phones. All rights reserved. 5. Reference Information Facts about cellular transmission Your car p hone employs the da ta transmission capabilities of the GSM network to send faxes, short messages and e-mail and to establish connections with remote computers. GSM data ca pabilit ies of your car ph one - Data compression with V.42bis - Non-transpar ent and tran sparent data trans fer at 9.6kb it/s -A T c o m m a n d s (for further information , see Nokia 6090 Product Support on www.forum.nokia.com website) - Fax s ervice clas ses 1, 2 and 2. 0 and EC M (sendi ng) - SM S sending a nd receiving Cellular data connections can be made f rom mos t of the l oca- tions where your car phone operates. However, we recommend that you move the car to a location wh er e the stron gest possible cellular signal can be obtained. When the signal is strong, d ata transmission is efficient. In general, you shou ld not expect the same performan c e from cellular data communication s as from line-connected commu- nications due to the in herent characteristics of the cellular en- vironment. The following fact ors may impair cellular connectio ns: Nois e Radio interference from electronic applianc es and equipment a s well as from surroundin g traffic may impact the transm ission quality. Handover As the car phone user moves from one network cell to another, the signal strength of the channel drops and th e cellular tele- phone exchange ma y hand the user over to a different cell and frequency where the signal is s tronger. A cell handover may also occur when th e user is st ationary due to varying cellular t r affic loads. Such handovers may cause slight delays . Dead spots and dropouts Dead spots are area s where radio signals cannot be received. Dropouts occur when th e car phone user passes th rough an area where the radio signal is blocked or reduced by geographic or stru ctu ral ob stru cti ons . Low signal strength Due to either distance or obstacles, the radio signal strength from a cell site may not be strong or stable enough to provide reliable cellular connection f or commun ication. Therefore, to ensure the best possible communication, remember to take the following points into considerat ion when using y our car phone:
Access codes 35 © 2001 Nokia Mobile Phones. All rights reserved. The data and fax conn ection works best when t h e car is station- ary. Attemp ting cell ular co mmun icati on while in a m oving ve - hicle is not recommended. Fax transmission is more easily impaired than data or short message transmiss ion. Check that the cellular signal strength on th e handset display is sufficient. If the cellular signals are not str ong enou gh to sup- port a voice call, data con nection should not be attempted until you can fin d a locati on with bet ter signal recep tion. Environmental impacts Your car phone works in an temperature range between -20 ° C and 60 ° C.
