Note: Use o nly th ose batte ries ap proved by the p hone manufac ture r and rechar ge your batt ery on ly with the charg ers appro ved b y the ma nufa cturer . When the batt ery beg ins char ging, y our pho ne will beep once and the battery str ength in d ica tor on the right si de of the dis pla y w ill s croll. Note: If th e b atter y is to tally em pty , it ma y take a few mi nutes before the char gi ng indi cat ion appe ars on the displ ay . If your phone displays # 1RW# FK DUJLQJ , cha rgin g is sus - pen de d. Check tha t th e b att ery is not co nne cted to a non -appr ove d chargin g device . The repetiti on rate of t h ese battery-low war nings depend on the r e maining battery c apacity and t he bat - ter y con di tio n. T hese war nin gs are more f requ ent when yo u’re in a ca ll. 10 When is char ging complete ? When th e charge i ndicators stop scr oll ing, yo ur pho ne is con sid ered fu lly ch arg ed. Ho we ver , a slig ht in crea s e in ch a rg e ma y oc c ur if y ou r phon e is lef t connec ted to the cha rger for a whil e. This is ca ll ed “ tri ck le cha r g e .” Charging t ime s depend on the type of battery a nd cha r g er u s ed. For ap prox imate cha rging and op erati ng times, see “ Standby and Tal k Ti mes” on page 7 4. Can you ma k e cal ls w hile c hargi ng? Y es, you can. Dischar ging NiMH batteries A Ni M H battery l a sts longer and perf orm s better i f you ful ly discha rge it fr om tim e to time. T o di scharge the bat- ter y , leave your ph one switc hed on until the battery is drai ned. The phon e will dis p lay severa l message s th at th e batter y is l ow and tha t you need to r ec harge it; just ignor e the m. Do not att e mpt to di scharge the batte ry b y any o the r m ean s. Impor tant Batte ry Inf ormation • Note that a new bat tery’ s full perform ance i s achi eved on ly after two or three co mp lete char ge a nd dischar ge cycl es! • The bat tery can be c harged and disch arg ed hund reds of times but it will e v e ntually wear out. When the oper a ting time (talk time and stan dby tim e) is noticeab ly shorter th an norma l, it i s time to buy a new battery . • Use only batteri es app roved by the phone manufactu rer and recharg e your b attery o nly with t he c hargers approved b y the man ufac tur er . When a charge r is no t in use, di sconnect it from the p ower sou rce. Do not l eave the bat tery connecte d to a c harger for lo nger t han a week, si nce overchargi ng may sh orten its li fe. If left unused a fully ch arg e d battery will d isc ha rge itself over time .
11 • (NiMH batte ries o nly) Fo r good opera tion times, discha rge the bat tery from time to ti me by l eaving your p hone switched o n until it tur ns itse lf off (or by using the bat tery discharge fac ilit y of any appr oved accessory available for your ph one ). Do n ot attem pt to discha rge the bat tery by any othe r means. • T emp erature extremes will affect the abi lity of your batte ry to char ge: allow it t o cool d own or warm up first. • Use th e batter y on ly for its intend ed pur pos e. • Never use a ny ch arger o r batte ry whic h is da maged or wor n out. • Do no t short c ir c uit the battery . S hort circuiting the ter minals m ay dama ge t he battery or the conn ecti ng object. • Leavin g the ba ttery i n hot o r cold p laces, su ch as i n a closed car in su mmer o r wint er cond itions, will r educe the capaci ty and lifetim e of th e batter y . A lways tr y to keep the battery bet ween 59º F a nd 77º F ( 15º C an d 2 5º C) . A pho ne wit h a hot or col d batt ery may te mpora rily not work, eve n whe n the b attery is fully cha rged. Ni MH batter ies’ perfo r mance is par t icular ly limited in tempera - tures be low 14º F (- 10º C).
