If you have a NiM H bat tery , yo u should allow it to compl etely discharge once in a wh ile. Charging should r esume once you en d th e call . Dischar ging NiMH batter ies A NiMH batte ry la sts longer and performs better if you fully disch arge it from ti me to time. T o discha rge the bat - tery , leave your phone switc hed on until the battery is drained. The phone will displ ay several messa ges that th e ba ttery i s low and that you need t o r echa rge it; jus t ig nor e them . Note : D o n ot atte m pt to discha rge the bat tery by an y oth er means. When do I need to buy a new battery? Th e batt er y can b e cha rged and disch ar ged hund red s of ti mes, but it wil l eventu ally wear out . W hen the oper- atin g time (ta lk-t ime and st andby t ime) is not ice ably short e r than norm al, i ts time to b uy a n ew battery. 8 Import ant Batter y Infor m at ion  Note that a new ba tter y s full performanc e is achieved only after tw o or three com plete char ge and discha rge cycles!  The ba tter y can be char ged and disch arged h undreds of times but it will eventually wea r out. Whe n the operating time (talk time and stand by time) is notice ably shorte r than norma l, it i s time to buy a new bat tery .  U se only bat teries app r oved b y the phone man ufacturer and recharge your battery on ly with the charg ers approved by the manufacturer . W hen a char ger is not in use, discon- nect it from the powe r source. Do not leave the b atte ry connect ed to a char ger for longer th an a week, since o ver- charging ma y shorten its life. If left unu sed a fully ch arged batter y will dischar ge itse lf over time.  (NiMH b atter ies only ) For g ood operat ion tim es, di sch arge the bat tery from tim e to time by lea ving y our p hon e switched on un til it tu r ns itself of f (or by using the battery discharge facility o f any approved accessor y available for your phone ). Do n ot attem pt to discha rge the bat tery by any othe r means.  T empera ture extremes will affect the ability of your batter y to char ge: allow it t o cool down or warm up first.  U se th e batter y on ly for its inten ded pu rpos e.  Never use any charg er o r batte ry wh ich is da mag ed or wor n o ut.  Do n ot sh ort circuit the bat tery . A ccide ntal s hort circuiti ng can occ ur w hen a metall ic obje ct (coi n, clip , or pe n) causes direct c onnection of the and - term inals of the batter y (met al strips on the back of the b attery), for example w hen you carr y a sp ar e batt ery in your po cket or purs e. Sho rt circuiting the ter mina ls may d am age the batter y or the connecting object.  Leaving th e b attery in ho t or co ld pla ces, such a s in a closed ca r in su mmer o r winter conditions, will reduce th e capacity a nd lifetim e of the batter y . Always try to kee p the batter y bet ween 5 9º F and 77 º F (15 º C an d 2 5º C). A phone with a hot or co ld battery m ay tem porarily not wor k, even when the battery is fully char ged. Ni MH bat teries performance is p articularly limit ed in temp eratur es below 14 º F (-1 0º C). Li- ion b atte ries pe rform ance is pa rticul arly limited in tempe ratu r es b elow 32º F ( -0º C).  Do n ot di spose of batt eries in a fire!  B atteries m ust be recycled or dispo sed of properly . Must not be dispo sed of in municip al waste.
9 3. The Basics Y our phon e is design ed with ma ny powerful fe atures that you ca n learn to use as ne eded. This c hapte r cov- ers th e basic i nforma tion you need to use your phone. TIPS ON EFFICIENT OPERA TION: As wit h any other r adio transmitting d evice, do n ot touch th e an tenna un necessarily when the pho ne is switched on . Con tact with the anten na af- fects call quality and may cau se the phone to ope rate at a higher p ower level th an other wise needed . W ARN I NG ! Checki ng signa l strength Y o ur phone o perates on rad io waves , and the quality of radio rece ption de pen ds entirely on the strength of the radio signal in your a rea . This radi o coverage is main tained by a wireless net work and the quality of calls on a wireless phone depend s on the stre ngth of the wireless radio sig nal. Get a strong signal When yo u ar e at the s tart sc ree n (s ee p ag e 14) or in a cal l, the str ength of the rad io signal is in- dicate d by th e signal i ndica tors on the left side of your phone  s display . These indicators scr oll as the str ength of the signal inc rea ses and decreases.

Navi ga tin g tools Softke ys Y our phone has two softkeys that app ear bel o w the dis play . Their cur - rent functi on is indi cated by the wo r ds a ppeari ng ab ove t hem. Si m- ply press the corresponding key under the c hoice you wish to select. This illustration shows the phone at the start scre en ( see Wha t i s t h e s ta r t s cr ee n?  o n p age 14) . The s tar t scre en al ways dis pla ys 0HQ X on th e le ft a nd 1DPHV on the right. 0HQ X allows you to access your phone  s menu s and submenus. 1DPHV al lows yo u to acce ss your phone book ( see Phone b ook on pa ge 50) . Scroll button Y our ph one has a scroll but ton lo cate d just below the displa y scr een. The scroll butt on has two arrows on it that look l ike V and W . Press thes e ar rows to n avi g ate thr ough your phone s menus and sub menus, as w ell as thr ough your p hone book ( See Phone book on page 50) .

This bar i ndicates whe re y ou ar e in the menu struc tur e; each t ab on the ba r r epr e- sent s a diff er ent menu i tem. Fo r exa mp le, pres s 0HQX once. The s cr oll bar appears wit h the fi rst (top) t ab displ ayed. A di ffer e nt tab a ppea rs each time yo u p r ess the W or V key to move up and down thr ough th e menu stru c tur e . The scr oll ba r works the same w ay with submenus. Menu & submenu numbering W hen y ou scro ll to a me nu or submen u, the m enu num- ber and/or submenu num be r appears on the display abo ve the scr oll bar . If you beco me f amili ar with these numbers, you can use th em as short cuts for accessing dif fer ent menus. What i s the ‘st art screen’ ? The start scr een appear s when y ou first tur n your ph on e on, in its idle state. When you want to get to the start sc r e en Press ô at any t ime exc ept duri ng a call (un less you want to hang up) If you p ress ô when the phone i s re q uesti ng inpu t (for exa mple , a sett ing , phon e numb er, nam e, etc. ), the phone displays the sta rt screen and the input is not saved.
