Positioning (GPS) You can use GPS data to find out your location or me asure distances. This requires a GPS connection. About GP S The Global Positioning System (GPS) is operated by t he government of the United States, which is solely responsible for its accura cy and maintenance. The accuracy of location data can be affected by adjustments to GPS satellites made by the United States government and is subject to change with the United States Department of Defense civil GPS policy and the Federal Radionavigation Plan. Accuracy can also be affected by poor satellite geometry. Avai lability and quality of GPS signals may be affected by your location, buildings, natural obstacles, an d weather conditions. GPS signals may not be available inside buildings or underground and may be impaired by materials s uch as concrete and metal. GPS should not be us ed for precise location measurement, and you should never rely solely on location data from the GPS receiver and cellular radio networks for positioning or navigation. The trip meter has limited a ccuracy, and rounding errors may occur. Accuracy can also be affected by availa bility and quality of GP S signals. Different positioning methods can be enabled or disabled in positioning settings. Assisted GPS (A-GPS ) Your device also supports ass isted GPS (A-GPS). A-GPS requires network support. Assisted GPS ( A-GPS) is used to retrieve a ssistance data over a packet data connection , which assists in calculating your current location when your device is receiving signals from satellites. When you activate A-GPS, your device receives useful satellite information from an assistance da ta server ove r the cellular network. With the help of assisted data , your device can obtain the GPS position faster. Your device is preconfigured to use the Nokia A-GPS service, if no service provid er-specific A-GPS settings are available. The assis tance data is ret rieved from the Nokia A-GPS service server only when needed. A-GPS is an internet service. When using A-GPS, i t may incur data charge s. For information about costs in your home network, contact your service provider. To disable the A-GPS service, select > To ols > Connect. > GP S data and Optio ns > Positi oning settings > Positioning me thods > Assisted GPS > Options > Disable . You must have an internet access point defined in the device to retrieve as sistance data from the N okia A-GPS service over a packet data co nnection. The access point for A-GPS can be defined in posit ioning settings. Only a packet data internet access point ca n be used. Yo ur device asks 33 Positioning (GPS) é 2009 Nokia. All rights reserved.
you to select the internet access point when GPS is used for the first time. Hold your device correctly The GPS receiver is located on the back of the device. When using the receiver, make sure that you do not cover the antenna w ith your hand. Establishing a GPS connection may take from a couple of seconds to tens of minutes. Establishing a GPS conne ction in the car, in bad weather co nditions, or in a challenging geographical environm ent may take longer. The GPS receiver draws its power from the device battery. Using the GPS receiver may drain the batt ery faster. 34 Positioning (GPS) é 2009 Nokia. All rights reserved.
