P acemaker s P acemaker manufacturers r ecom mend that a minimum separation of 6 inches (20 cm) should be maintained between a handheld wireless phone and a pacemaker to avoid poten tial interference with the pacemaker . These recommendations ar e consistent with the independent research by and recommendat ions of W ireless T e chnology Research. P ersons with pacemakers : • Should always keep the phone more than 6 inches (20 cm) from their pacemakers when the phone is switched on. • Should not carry the ph one in a breast pocket. • Should use th e ear opposite the pac emaker to min imize the potential fo r interf er ence. Note: If you have any reason to suspect that interference is taking place, switch off your phone immediately . Hearing aids Some digital wireless phones could interfere with some hearing aids. I n the even t of such interfer ence, you might want to consult you r service provider . Oth er me dica l devic es Operation of a ny radio tra nsmitting equipment, including cellular phones, could interfere with the fun ctionality of inadequately protected medical devices. [ 1 06 ] Switch off your phone in health care facilities or wh ere any posted regulations in struct you to do s o. Hospitals or health car e facilities could be using equipment that is sen sitive to exter nal RF en ergy . Ve h i c l e s RF signals could improperly affect installed or inadequatel y shielded electronic systems in m otor vehicles. These cou ld include electronic fuel injection system s, electronic anti-skid (anti-lock) br aking sys tems, electronic speed con trol systems, or air bag systems. Check with the manufacturer or its representative regarding your vehicle. Y ou should also consult the manufacturer of any equipment that h as been added to y our vehicle. P osted faci lities Switch your phone off in any facility where posted notices s o require. P otentiall y explosive atmosp heres Switch off your phone if you ar e in any area th at has a potentially explosive atmosphe re, and obey a ll signs and ins tructions. Spark s in such areas could cause an explosion or fire, resulting in bodily injury or even death. Y ou are a dvised to switch off the ph one while a t a ref uelin g point (s ervice station). And, you are reminded of the need to observe restrictions regarding the u se of radio equipment in fuel depots (f uel storage an d distribution areas), chemical plants, or whe re blasting operations are in progress. Areas with a potentially explosive atm osphere are often—but no t always— clearly marked. These a reas include the f ollowing: below deck on boa ts; chemical transfer or stor age facilities; veh icles using liquefied pe troleum gas (such as pr opane or bu tane); areas where the air contains chemicals or pa rticles, such as grain, dust, or metal powders ; and a ny other area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.
[ 1 0 7 ] Referen ce information Ve h i c l e s Only qualified personnel should service the phone or install th e phone in a vehicle. Regularly check th at all wireless ph one equipment in your vehicle is mounted and operating properly . Do not store or carry flammable liquids, gases, or explosive materials in the same compartment a s the ph one, its parts, or its accessories. For vehicles equipped with an air bag, remember that an air bag inflates with great force. Do n ot place objects, including both the installed or the portable wireless equipment, in the area over the air bag or in the air bag deployment area. If the in-vehicl e wireless equipmen t is im properly installed and the air bag inflates, serious in jury could result. Switch off your phone before boarding an aircraft. Because of this, connections in all conditions cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, you should nev er r ely solely on any wireless phone f or essential communications (for e xa mple, medical emergencies).
[ 1 08 ] Remember , to make or r eceive any calls, the phone must be switched on and be used in a service area that has adequate signal strength. Eme rgency calls might not be possible on all wireless phone networks or whe n certain network services and/or phone features are in u se. Check w ith local service providers. Always make sure t hat your phone is properly charged before attempting any emergency calls. [ 1 09 ] Referen ce information Radio Frequency (RF) Signals Y our wireless handheld portable telephone is a low-power radio transmitter and receiver . When it is O N, it receives an d sends out radio frequency ( RF) signals. In August 1996, the Feder al Communications Commission (FCC) adopted RF exposure guidelin es that included safety levels f or handheld wire less phones. Those guidelines are consistent with safety standards pr eviously set by both U.S and international standards bodies: • AN SI C 95.1 (1 992)* , N CRP R epor t 86 (1986 )*, IC NIRP (1996) *, a nd RSS-1 0 2 issue 1. Those standards were based on comprehensive and periodic evaluations of the re levant scientific liter ature. For ex ample, over 12 0 scientists, engineers, and physicians from universities, government health agencies, and industry review ed the available body of research to develop the ANSI Standard ( C95.1). The design of your phone com plies with th e FCC guideline s (and those sta n dar ds ). For body worn operation, to maintain compliance w ith FCC RF exposure guidelines, u se only N okia approved accessories. When carrying the phone while it is on , place the phone in the specific Nokia car rying cases that have been tested for compli ance. Use of non -Nokia-approved accessories may violate FCC RF exposure guidelines and should be av oided. *American National Standards Institute, National Council on Radiation Protection and Measuremen ts; International Commission on Non - Ionizing Radiation Protection.
