3 2. Battery and Signal Your phone is powered by a rechargeable battery. Use onl y ba tter ies ap proved b y t he ph one manu fact urer and recharge your battery onl y with the chargers approved by the manufa cturer. See “Importa nt B atte ry Information” on pa ge 6. A n ew battery mu st be fully ch arged before be ing used for the first time. A new batte ry’s fu ll perfo rman ce is achi eved only after t wo or th ree com plete char ge and di scharge cycles! T o Install the Battery T o Remove the B atte ry Switch off th e power before removing the battery.
4 T o Charge the Battery Plug th e charg er int o a stand a rd AC wall o utlet then conne ct the connector to the bottom of your phone. When char ging starts the b atte ry se gments scro ll and the pho ne beep s once . You can use the ph one dur ing th e charg ing, but the cha rging will be reduced for the dura tion of the cal l. Note t hat if the batte ry is comp letely empty and y ou are us ing th e St anda rd T rave l Charger ( ACH-8U), you can’t use the phon e until it has enou gh char ge to operat e. Batte ry L o w You get this m essage and a warn ing tone when t he battery cha rge is lo w and only a few minute s of talk ti me remai n. When th e battery c harge i s t oo low for the phone t o oper at e, RECHARGE BATTERY is displayed and a warning tone is given. As wi th al l radi o equi pment, th e qual ity of r ad io r ecept ion depends on the strength of the radio signa l in t he area wher e you a re oper ating your phon e. The stre ngth of th e cell ular signal i s shown by th e verti cal bar on the l eft-h and si de of the di splay . The high er th e bar, the strong er t he si gnal is where yo u are opera ting your phone. When is di sp layed , the phone is out side of th e cell ular serv ice area and cal ls cannot be m ade or re ceived. If the sig nal is poo r and you ar e usin g the phon e in a buil ding, you m ay ge t bette r reception near a wi ndow. NiCd

10 If you h ave set Rin ging Volume to SILENT SERVI CE , t he phon e’s li ghts flas h and the ph one mak es a sho rt beep. You can answer a ca ll any time, even while using the Keyg uard, memory or menu f unctions. If yo u d on't answer a ca ll, the message 1 CALL MIS SED or n CALLS MISS ED wi ll r ema in on the di splay until you press any k ey (exce pt the o n/off key) to clear the display. The phone stores th e caller’s number (i f ava i l able) in th e li st of Missed Ca lls (s ee “M enu 15, Ca ll Register” on pa ge 34). Adjusting th e Earpiece V olume Dur ing a c all , pres s W or V t o decreas e or incr eas e the ear piec e volu me l eve l. T he display must be clear. The phone r ecalls the number stored in the corr esponding location number i n your phone directory (see “T he Phone Direc tory” on p age 16 ), disp lays i t briefl y , then dial s it. If the memory locati on is empty, the me ssage LOCATION EMPT Y is di splayed . 1 T ouch Dialing Hold fo r a few sec onds. The phone dials the number stored in location 1 of your phone direc tory (see “The Phone Dire ctory” on page 16). You may w ant to store your voice mailbox numb er in l ocati on 1 if you have subs crib ed t o voice mail (see below). To store the number in the p hone directory location 1, se e “ To Store Num bers a nd Na mes” on p age 17 .
