Intr oduc tion 4 1. Introduction The Nokia Bluetooth Headset BH-9 00 allows you freedom to make and receive calls while on the move or in the office. The headset has a sl iding boom that allows you to answer and end calls and to talk at a lower volume or in a noisy environment. You can connect the headset to a compatible phone that supports Bluetooth wireless technology. Read this user guide carefully before using the headset. Read also the user guide for your phone, which provides important safety and maintenance information. Keep th e headset out of reach of small children. ■ Bluetooth wireless technology Bluetooth wireless technology makes it possible to connect compatible communication devices without usin g cables. A Bluetooth connection does not require that the phone and the headset be in line of sight, but both devices should be within 10 meters (30 feet) of each other. Connections may be subject to interf erence from obstructions, such as walls or other electronic devices. The wireless headset is compliant with Bluetooth Specification 2.0 supporting the following profiles: Headset Profile 1.1 and Handsfree Profile 1.5. Check with the manufactu rers of other devices to determine their compatibility with this device. There may be restrictions on usin g Bluetooth technology in some locations. Check with your local authorities or service provider.

Get started ■ Keys and parts The headset contains the following parts: • Indicator light (1) • Volume key (2) • Power key (3) • Sliding boom (4) • Answer/end key (5) • Charger connect or (6) • Earphone (7) • Microphone (8) Before using the headset, you must charge the battery and pair the headset with a compatible phone. Note: Parts of the headset are magnetic. Metallic materials may be attracted to the headset. Do not place credit cards or other magnetic storage media near the headset, because information stored on them may be erased. ■ Chargers Check the model number of any charg er be fore using it with this device. The headset is int ended for use w ith the AC-3, AC-4, a nd DC-4 chargers. Warning: Use only chargers approved by Nokia for use with this particular enhancement. The use of any other types may invalidate any approval or warranty, and may be danger ous. For availability of approved enhanc ements, please check with your dealer. When you disconnect the power cord of any enhancement, grasp and pull the plug, not the cord.
Get started 6 ■ Charge the battery This device has an internal, nonre movable, rechargeable battery. Do not attempt to remove the ba ttery from the device as you may damage the device. 1. Connect the charger to a wall outlet. 2. Connect the charger cable to the headset as shown in the figur e. The red indicator light is displayed during charging. If charging does not start, disconnect the charger, plug it in again, and retry. Charging the batte ry fu lly may ta ke up to 2 hours . 3. When the battery is fully charged, the green indicator light is displayed. Disconnect the charg er from the wall outlet and the headset. The fully charged battery has power for up to 8 hours of talk-time or up to 180 hours of standby time. Howeve r, the talk and standby times may vary when used with different mobile phones or other compatibl e Bluetooth devices, usage settings, usage styles, and environments. When the battery is running out of power, the headset beeps, and the red indicator light starts to flash. ■ Switch the headset on or off To switch on, press and hold the power key. The headset beeps, and the green indicator light starts to flash. The indicator light turns blue when the headset is connected to your phone and ready for use. To switch off, press and hold the pow er key. The headset beeps, and the red indicator light is displayed briefly. ■ P air the headset with a compatible p hone 1. Switch on your phone and the headset. 2. Activate the Bluetooth feature on the phone, and set the phone to search for Bluetooth devices. See the user guide of your phone for instructions.
Get started 7 3. Select the headset (Nokia BH- 900) from the list of found devices. 4. Enter the passcode 0000 to pair and connect the headset to your phone. In some phones you ma y need to make the connect ion separately after pairing. See the user guide of your phone for details. You only need to pair the headset with your phone once. If the pairing is successful, the headset beeps and appears in the phone menu where you can view the currently paired Bluetooth devices. Disconnect the headset from the phone To disconnect the headset from your phone (for example, to connect the phone to another Bluetooth device), do one of the following: • Switch off the headset. • Disconnect the headset in the Bluetooth menu of your phone. • Move the headset more than 10 meters (30 feet) away from the phone. You do not need to delete the pairin g with the headset to disconnect it. Reconnect the paired headset to your phone To connect the headset to your phone, switch on the headset, make the connection in the Bluetooth menu of your phone, or press and hold the answer/end key. You can set your phone to connect with the headset automatically when the headset is switched on. To do this in Nokia phones, change your paired device settings in the Bluetooth menu. ■ Troubleshooting If you cannot connect the headset t o your phone, do as follows: • Ensure that the headset is charge d, switched on, and paired with your phone. • Ensure that the Bluetooth feature is activ ated on your phone.
Get started 8 • Check that the headset is within 10 meters (30 feet) of your phone and that there are no obstructions between the headset and the phone, such as walls or other electronic devices. • To reset the headset if it stops functioning, although it is charged, plug the headset into a charger, and briefly press the power key and the middle of the volume key at th e same time. This reset does not clear your settings (for example, pairing settings).

Basic use ■ Put the headset on the ear Place the headset over your ear in a comfortable position, and point it toward your mouth as shown in the figure. ■ Sliding boom The sliding boom brings the microphone closer to your mouth, which improves the audio quality even when you talk at a lower volume or in a noisy environment. You can use the boom to answer, end, or reject a call. To use the boom, gently pull it down toward your mouth (1), or push it up to its initial position (2). ■ Call handling To make a call, use your phone in the normal way when the headset is connected to your phone. If your phone supports redialing, pres s the answer/end key twice briefly when no call is in progress. If your phone supports voice dialing, press and hold the answer/end key when no call is in progress, and procee d as described in the user guide of your phone. To answer a call, pull the boom down toward your mouth, press the answer/end key, or use the phone keys . If the automatic answer fun ction
Basic use 10 is set on, the phone automatically answers the incoming call after one ring. To reject an incoming call, pull the boom down and push it up immediately, or briefly pres s the answer/e nd key twice. To end a call, push the boom up to its initial position, press the answer/ end key, or use the phone keys. ■ Adjust the earphone volume Press the volume key up to increase or down to decrease the volume. To adjust the volume quickly, pres s and hold the key in the desired direction. ■ Mute or unmute the microphone To mute or unmute the microphone duri ng a phone call, briefly press the middle of the volume key. A long be ep sounds. When the mi crophone is muted, the blue indicator light flashes continuously. The mute function cannot be used during a PTT call. ■ Push to talk (PTT) calls You can use the headset to make and re ceive push to talk (PTT) calls. To use this network service, your phone must support it and the function must be set to on in the phone. For more information on the PTT function, contact your network operator or service provider and see the user guide of your compatible phone. To make a PTT call to the default P TT channel defined in your phone, press and hold the middle of the volume key (while no call is in progress) as long as you speak. When you receive a PTT call while no call is in progress, the headset beeps, and you star t to hear speech from the cha nnel. To answer and speak to the listened chan nel within the time defined by t he network operator or service provider, press and hold the mi ddle of the volume key as long as you speak. To answer an d speak to the default channel after the time defined by the network opera tor or service provider, press and hold the middle of the volume key as long as you speak.
Basic use 11 ■ Switch a ca ll between the phone and headset To switch the phone call or PTT cal l between the headset and a compatible Nokia phone, press and ho ld the answer/end key, or use the respective function in your phone. ■ Use the headset wi th several phones You can pair the headset with up to eight phones but connect it to only one phone at a time. The phone that was first paired with the headset is the default phone. If the headset is switched on within 10 meters (30 feet) of several paired phones, the headset tries to connect to the default phone. If the headset cannot connect to the default phone, the headset tries to connect to the last used phone. If the headset cannot connect to this phone either, one of the other six paired phones can be connected to the headset. To make the connection, see the user guide of your phone. ■ Clear the settings If you want to clear all the setting s from the headset (for example, the list of paired devices), press and hold the power key and the volume key up for 10 seconds. After the setting s are clear ed, the headset beeps twice, and the red, green, and blue indicator lights al ternate for several seconds.
Battery information 12 4. Battery information Your device is powered by a rechar geable battery. The full per formance of a new battery is achieved only after two or three complete char ge and discharge cycles. The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times, but it will eventua lly wear out. Recharge your battery only with Nokia approved charge rs designated for this device. Unplug the charger from the electrical plug and the device when not in use. Do not leave a fully charged ba ttery connected to a charger, since overcharging may shorten its lifetime. If left unused, a fully charged battery will lose its charge over time. Never use any charger that is damaged. Leaving the device in hot or cold pla ces, such as in a closed car in summer or winter conditions, will re duce the capacity and lifetime of the battery. Always try to keep th e battery between 15°C and 25° C (59°F and 77°F). A device with a h ot or cold battery may not work temporarily, even when the b attery is fully charged. Battery performance is particularly limited in tempe ratures well below freezing. Do not dispose of batteries in a fi re as they may explode. Batteries may also explode if damaged. Dispose of batteries according to local regulations. Please recycle when pos sible. Do not dispose as household waste.
Care and maintenance 13 Care and maintenance Your device is a product of superior design and craftsmanship and should be treated with care. The suggest ions belo w will help you protect your warranty coverage. • Keep all accessories and enhancements out of the reach of small children. • Keep the device dry. Precipitation, humidity, and all types of liquids or moisture can contain minerals that w ill corrode electronic circuits . If your device does get wet, allow it to dry completely. • Do not use or store the device in dusty, dirty areas. Its moving parts and electronic components can be damaged. • Do not store the device in hot areas. Hi gh temperat ures c an shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, and warp or melt ce rtain plastics. • Do not store t he device in cold areas. When the device returns to its normal temperature, moisture can form inside the device and damage electronic circuit boards. • Do not drop, knock, or shake the device. Rough handling c an break internal circuit boards and fine mechanics. • Do not use harsh chemicals, cl eaning so lvents, or strong detergents to clean the device. • Do not paint t he device. Paint can cl og the moving parts and prevent proper operation. All of the above suggestions apply equally to your device, battery, ch arger, or any enhancement. If any device is not working properly, t ake it to the nearest authorized service facility.
