Its wide screen and portable size mak e it optimal for enjoying t he web and internet communic ations away from you r laptop or de sktop. Your compatible WLAN a ccess p oint must be comp liant with the IEEE 802 .11b or 802.11g standard. Read this user guide caref ully before usin g your device. To select a n option in a menu , tap it. Altern atively, scroll to the desire d option in a menu using the and hardware keys and pr ess to open it. To close the men u, press , or tap another area of the screen. The task navigator cont ains the following items by default. To change the it ems, tap and select Tools > Control panel > Navigatio n . For more information, see the device help. First item: web browser —Tap to access internet functions such as Open new browser windo w and Manage bookmar ks . Second item: contacts —Tap to access functions such as View cont acts , View inbox , New e-mail message , New Internet call , Send call invitation , New chat , and Set pr esen ce . W hen yo u re ce iv e ne w e -m ai l or chat m essages, auth orization requests and r esponses, or group chat i nvitat ions, t he icon is hi ghligh ted and the menu is updated. The information of these events is displaye d at the bottom of the menu. Appl ications —Ta p f or access t o all installed a pplications. To chan ge the st ructu re of the menu, se lect Tools > Control panel > Navigation . Application switcher —The application switcher (7) contai ns icons of currently open app lications. The icons of the four most recen tly launched applications are show n on the applic ation swit cher. To se e all r unn ing app lica tions, tap . If several in s tances of an applic ation are open (for example, mu ltiple web brow ser window s), the group has one applic ation icon. To change to an ap plication, tap the icon of the application in the application switcher . If you hold the stylus down on an icon, a tool t ip is shown . Leaving applica tions ru nning in the backgr ound inc reases the demand on battery power and redu ces the battery life. Application title area The applicati o n title area (2) displ ays the name of the active application and the open file. To open the applica tion menu, tap the title, or p ress . Status indicator area Tap the ico ns in the s tatus indicator area to get more informat ion or perf o rm tasks related to a specific fun ction. The status indi cator area (3) may contain the fol lowing icons: indicates h ow mu ch charge is lef t in the ba ttery. The more bars the icon co ntains, the mor e charge is left. Over view 9 The intern et connectio n icon indicat es the st atus and type of the int ernet conne ction and allow s you to ope n and close an interne t connect ion. indicates t hat a W LAN connec tion is activ e, that a packe t data connec tion (for example, GPRS) is active, that a data call connection (for example, GSM data call) is active, that there is no interne t connect ion, or that th e device is in the offline mode where no conne ctions are allowed. indicates that a WLAN conne ction is activ e, but t he device did no t receiv e an IP address from the ne twork. Your connecti on to the int ernet is limite d. indicates the volume level and allows you to adjust the master volu me and other s ound settings. Th e more bars t he icon c ontains, the higher the volu me. When th e sounds ar e muted, the icon is . indicates the level o f display brightness an d allows you to adjust the display set tings. The pre sence i con in dicates y our pr esence st atus an d allows you to a djust th e presen ce set tings. The icon is visible o nly after you have cr eated an account for interne t call and instan t messagin g service. indi cates that you are onl ine, that yo u are away, that you are invisible, or that you ar e offline. indicates that the device is connected to a PC through a USB cable. indicat e s that you ha v e set an alar m in the Clock application. indicates that a Bluetooth connection to an external device is a ctive. indicates tha t the device is set as th e visible device su pporting Blue tooth tech nology, but th ere is no act ive conne ction at the mom ent. The status indica tor area makes it possible to disp lay multiple status ico ns simu ltaneous ly. If you have , for exa mple, installed you r own status indicator s and want to dis play more tha n seven items at a time, they will be show n on several lines. W hen th ere are a ddition al lines , they can be accessed by tapping the arrow icon . To change the icons in the status indic ator area, tap and select Tools > Control panel > Navigation > Status bar . If you replace th e cont act i con in th e task na viga tor w ith a differen t task navig ator ico n, you receive informa tion about new ch at messages, authorization requests and responses, or grou p chat invita tions to . Minimize and close buttons Every application has the minimize and close but tons (4). If you t ap , the cur rent ap plication is hidden and the un derlying ap plication is shown. To c lose a n application, you can also sele ct Close from the application menu, pre ss for a second, or tap the close button in the application switcher me nu. Application area When you open an application from the task navigator, the applicat ion is di splayed i n the ap plication area (5 ). If there ar e currently no open applications, the applets you selected in the Home menu are di splayed in the applica tion area. Toolbar The toolbar (6) contains the command buttons of the active appl ication. Home vi ew When you sw itch on the device , the home vi ew is displ ayed. The hom e view cont ains vario us a pple ts (s mall u tilit ies) t hat you c an open, cl ose, and rearra nge. You c an also i nstall new applets using the Application manager . The fo llowing apple ts are available in your device: Clock —Displays the time in digital or an alog format. The date format depen ds on the re gional settings. To se t the time and date , tap the clock, an d select Clock > Tools > Date and time settings... . Internet radio —Select a n interne t ra dio chan nel from the list. The content of the list comes from the Media player application, where you can add and remove radio channels. RSS feed reader —Shows the number o f unre ad ne ws articles a nd lists t he latest head lines whe n you s ubscribe to a news s ervice. The subscription is m ade in the RS S fee d reader applicatio n. To vie w an art icle, tap it s headlin e. To refresh the article list fr om the web, ta p . To stop the ref resh, tap . Speed cont acts —Allows you t o quickly get in con tact wi th a selected group of people. To selec t the contac ts to be displayed on the applet, select Hom e > Applet settings > Speed contacts . Web shortcut —To set the web page that opens wh en you tap the shortcut image , select Home > Applet settings > Web shortcut . The fu nction s of this f eature may vary depending on t he product package . Internet search —Ena bles you to lo ok for a request ed piec e of info rmation . Enter the s earch stri ng in the s earch fiel d and tap . To set the backgrou nd image for the home view, s elect Home > Tools > Set background image... . The background may display a solid color, an image, or both. To personalize the look and feel of you r device, select Home > Tools > Themes. .. . To arran ge applets in th e home view, s elect Home > Edit layout . In th e layout m ode you can rearran ge the a pplets b y dragging t hem. Y ou can also res ize so me applet s in the layout mode. To accept the layou t, tap . To discard t he changes you made, tap . Device control You ca n contro l the devic e in two wa ys: tap th e screen with t he stylus or pre ss the har dware keys on t he device. Stylus Using the st ylus enab les different fun ctions dependin g on the co ntext. The styl us can be use d in the fol lowing way s: • Single tap—To act ivate controls and other in teractive inte rface compon ents, ta p them once with the stylus. A single tap may open a list, activate a but ton in a dialog or a link on a web page , select a check box, and activate a text input method from a text field. • Highlight and acti v ate—To highlight an item, tap i t once with the stylus . To activate or open the item, tap it again. • Multiple se lection—T o selec t consecut ive item s, place the st ylus on a non-hi ghlighted it em, and drag th e stylus over the items. To add m ore items to th e selection, pl ace the st ylus on a no n-hi ghlig hted it em and drag the st ylu s over the items. To remove a selection, tap a single item. • Drag and drop—To drag an item, hold the stylus down on a highlighted item, drag the ite m to its new location, and release th e stylus. The applic ations display error messages when you try t o move, cop y, or sa ve fi les, and when th ere is not enou gh memory on the device or the memory card. Memory card Your device has two memory card slots. The re is an in ternal slot under the b ack cover and another slot under the memory card cover on the fron t corner of the device. Both memory cards can be insert ed and removed wh en the device is powered (hot swap feature). The supported memory card for mats are as follows: • MultiMediaCard ( MMC), (full size) • Re duced S ize MM C (wit h adapte r) • SD card ( full si ze) • miniSD ca rd (with adapte r) • microSD ca rd (with adapter) This device does not support the write protection feature of SD cards. Use only com patible M ultiMediaCards ( MMC), Re duced Size MultiMe diaCards, SD cards , microSD cards, or miniSD cards approve d by N okia for us e wit h this de vice. Nokia uses approve d industry standards for mem ory cards, bu t some brands ma y not be fully compatible w ith this device. Incompat ible cards may damage the car d and the device and corrupt data stored on the card. The size limit is 2 GB. You can only us e FAT 16 /32 formatte d compatible m emory cards wit h this de vice. Connectivit y settings To edit and cre ate inter net co nnections and to a djust connection c reation logic, tap , and se lect Tools > Control panel > Conne ctivity . On the Genera l page, de fine the fol lowing settings : Conn ect autom atica lly — Select wh ich connection s are used automat ically. This setting applies only to ne tworks and connect ions you have saved in your device. Search interval —Defin e ho w often conne ctio ns are s earched in the ba ckground. Tip: Once you have sa ved one or more WLAN(s) in Tools > Control panel > Connectivity > Connections , the de vice sea rches f or tho se conn ections every 10 minutes by default, while th ere is no ongoing connec tion. To di sable the s earch in th e background in order to save battery power, set the search interval value to Neve r . On the Idle t imes page, select t he time after wh ich th e interne t connection ends automatically if th e connection is not u sed. The found media clips and the avail able UPnP media servers are displayed in the Library autom atica lly . Scannin g the memory ca rd takes some time , so content in the card m ay not be a vailable immediat ely after ins erting the car d. The media playe r library incl udes the following top categori es by default: • Music — Includes audi o media stored loc ally. You can browse your audio clips by dif ferent categ ories, for example, by album or by artist. • Video —In cludes video med ia stored locally. • Internet radio —Includes links to radio streams. UPnP medi a server s also appear o n the list if the y are avai lable. Internet rad io With Internet radio you can listen to internet r adio channels or any other compatible audio streams. The internet radio supports MP3 file format, and ASX, M3U, PLS, RAM, RPM, WAX, and WPL playl ists. Internet radio does not nece ssarily support all f eatures of a file f ormat or all the variations of file format s. There are two ways to add a r adio channe l to the li st from the web browse r, depending on the format of the stream. 1. UPnP media servers are available for most operating systems and many hardware platforms and enable you to store and share your media files (pic tures, video, audio, and multime dia files). Your Nokia N8 00 fu nctions as a UPn P client and ca n auto- detect UPn P med ia serv ers as lon g as they are connected t o the same local network as your device and are configur ed accordin gly. File fo rmats The media player application supports M3U and PLS playlist file formats. Som e other playlist s, such as ASX, WAX, WPL, and WVX are su pported only partially. Use the USB data cable to t ransfer files to a compat ible me mory card and to update the latest sof tware on your device. When the USB c able is connect ed, th e memor y card of you r Nokia N800 is listed as a mass storage devic e on your PC, and is dis played on your device. To be able to transfer files from the PC to the device, yo u must ha ve a compatible memory card in stalled in t he dev ice. When the USB cable is conn ected, you ca nnot acce ss the informat ion on th e memory card with your device. H o wever, you can transfer files fr om your PC t o the m emory card, and view the conten ts of the memo ry card on you r PC. The batter y can be charged an d discharged hu ndreds of tim es, but it will event ually we ar out. Wh en the ope rating a nd standby times are not iceably shorter than normal, replace the battery. Use only Nokia approv ed batteries, and recharge your bat tery only w ith N okia a pproved c hargers designat ed for th is devic e. If a rep lacement batt ery is bein g used for th e first t i me or if the battery has not been use d for a prolonged period, it may be n ecessary to connect the charger , then disco nnect and reconn ect it to begin charging the battery. If left unused, a fully charged batt ery will lose its charge over time. If the ba ttery is c ompletely dischar ged, it m ay take several minutes be fore the charg ing indicato r appears on th e display. Use the batte ry only for its intended purpose. Never u se any charger or battery t h at is damaged. Do not short-circuit the ba ttery.
