About encoded audio Applications like Windows Media Player, and Nokia Audio Manager (included in the Noki a PC Suite) encode audio files with codecs suc h as WMA or MP3 to save storage space. The encoding is done by removing those parts of the audio signal that are not audible or only barely audible by human ear. Regardless of the encoder and codec quality, the sound quality of the resulting file is not as good as the original . The basic codecs supported by this devi ce are AAC, WMA, and MP3. All of these have different variations. Bitrates When encoding audio, the quality of the resulting sound depends on the sample rate and bit rate used for the encoding. Sample rate is expressed as thousands of samples per second (kHz), and for CD music the sample rate is fixed at 44.1 kHz. Bit rate is expr essed as kilobits per second (Kbps). The higher the bitrate, the better the sound quality. The required quality level ma y depend on your demands, the headsets used, and the surrounding n oise. For MP3s a bitrate between 128 and 192 Kbps usually gives results good enough for listening to pop music wi th your device. WMA or AAC generally gives a similar result as MP3 with one step lower bitra te (96-160 Kbps). Variations of AAC, such as AAC and enhanced AAC (eAAC ) provide CD quality audio at bitrates as low as 48 Kbps. Classical music and music with nuances usually require a higher bitrate than basic pop music. For speech or othe r sources wh ere the quality of the sound is less important than saving storage spa ce, you can use bitrates between 8 and 64 Kbps. At low bitrates WMA or AAC generally gives better results than MP3.
Media applications 48 Variable bitrate Your device also supports vari able bitrate (VBR). Variable bitrate means that the bit rate of the encoding varies with the complexity of the encoded material. When using VBR, the encoding is optimized to preserve a constant audio quality thro ughout the tr ack, rather than losing quality for complex music sections as with constant bitrat e (CBR) encoding. Battery information 128 Battery information Charging and disc harging Your device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times but it will eventually wear out. When th e talk and standby times are noticeably shorter th an normal, replace the b attery. Use only Nokia approved batteries, and re charge your battery only with Nokia approved chargers designated for this device. If a replacement battery is b eing used for the first time or if the battery has not been used for a prolonged period, it may be necessary to connect the charger, and then disconnect and reconnect it to begin charging the ba ttery. Unplug the charger from the elec trical plug and the device when not in use. Do not le ave fully charged battery connected to a charger, since overcharging may shorten its lifetime. If left unused, a fully charged battery will lose its charge over time. If the battery is completely di scharged, it may take several minutes before the charging in dicator appears on the display or before any calls can be mad e. Use the battery only for it s intended purpose. Neve r use any charger or battery that is damaged. Do not short-circui t the battery. Accidental short-circuiting can occur when a metallic object such as a coin, clip, or pen causes direct connection of th e positive ( ) and negative (-) terminals of the battery. (These look like metal strips on the battery.) This might happen, for example, when you carry a spare battery in your pocket or purse. Short-circuiting the terminals may damage the battery or the conne cting object. Leaving the battery in hot or cold places, such as in a closed car in summer or winter conditio ns, will reduce the capacity and lifetime of the b attery. Always try to keep the b attery between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F). A device with a hot or cold battery may not wo rk temporaril y, even when the battery is fully charged. Battery performance is particularly limited in temperatures well below freezing. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire as they may explode. Batteries may also explode if damaged. Dispose of batteries according to local regulations. Please recycle when possible. Do not dispose as household waste. Do not dismantle or shred cells or batteries. In the event of a battery leak, do not allow the liquid to come in contact with the skin or eyes. In the event of such a leak, flush your skin or eyes immediately with wate r, or seek medical help. Nokia battery authentication guidelines Always use original Nokia batter ies for your safety. To check that you are getting an original Nokia battery, purchase it from
